              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot Lines: Sunday's best MLB bets
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tampa Bay Rays at Florida Marlins (-105, 8)

Tampa Bay (23-22) has not scored a run for Shields (3-4, 3.43 ERA) in his last two outings, wasting the right-hander's best start of the season Tuesday night. Shields gave up four hits and struck out five in 8 1-3 scoreless innings, but the Rays lost 4-1 in 11 innings to Oakland.

Shields has gotten two runs or fewer to work with in five of his nine outings.

"I've always said it's not how you pitch, it's when you pitch," Shields said.

Shields is 2-1 with a 3.81 ERA in four starts against the Marlins (19-25). His Florida counterparts haven't fared nearly as well versus Tampa Bay.

The Rays have won five straight against Florida, batting .321 with 10 homers while averaging 11.5 runs during that streak.

Tampa Bay beat Florida 10-3 on Saturday night, benefiting from another poor performance by the Marlins after winning 15-2 on Friday. Florida pitching has been horrendous over the last seven games, posting a 7.66 ERA with the Marlins losing six of those contests.

"It has certainly been a struggle," Florida infielder Wes Helms said. "But it's something you have to battle through. It's not something you can just wish away. You just have to keep working hard every night."

The Marlins hope Josh Johnson (3-1, 2.54) can give them a boost. Johnson, though, has not had many runs scored on his behalf, getting three or fewer in each of his last eight starts.

The right-hander allowed three runs - two earned - and four hits in 6 1-3 innings against Arizona on Tuesday night, but suffered a loss as Florida was defeated 5-3.

Florida's lineup, meanwhile, is struggling, scoring a total of eight runs in its last three games. Marlins rookie left fielder Chris Coghlan is 2 for 27 (.074) over his last nine contests, dropping his average to .143.

Florida manager Fredi Gonzalez missed his team's latest loss, leaving town to attend his daughter's high school graduation. Florida played no better for bench coach Carlos Tosca, dropping to 8-24 following an 11-1 start.

              Pick: Tampa Bay

Minnesota Twins at Milwaukee Brewers (-130, 9)

The Milwaukee Brewers were only able to silence Joe Mauer for one game, but that's still more than most teams have been able to since he's come off the disabled list.

Led by Mauer, the Minnesota Twins look to win their season-high fourth straight game Sunday night when they try to complete a three-game sweep of the Brewers.

Mauer went 0 for 2 on Friday, although he walked twice and had two RBIs. It was only the third time in 21 games since being activated from the DL following offseason kidney surgery that Mauer failed to record a hit.

He made up for it Saturday, going 3 for 3 with a solo home run in a 6-2 victory.Mauer has hit nine homers in 21 games - matching his total in 146 games a year ago. He's batting .429 and has driven in 10 of his 28 runs over the last three games.

In the final season at the Metrodome, he's hitting .526 (20 for 38) with five homers and 17 RBIs.

Joe Crede also hit a home run Saturday, and the Twins (21-23) have tallied eight during their winning streak with at least one in six straight games. Spearheaded by a 20-1 rout of the Chicago White Sox on Thursday, Minnesota has scored 37 runs and has 42 hits in the last three contests.

The Brewers (26-17), meanwhile, have lost three of four after winning seven in a row. Saturday's loss guaranteed them their first losing series since dropping two of three on the road against the New York Mets from April 17-19.

Milwaukee has a 6.55 staff ERA in its last four games after recording a 2.29 ERA during its winning streak.

Offense has also been a problem. The Brewers, who were without J.J. Hardy (back spasms) and Corey Hart (bruised right hand) on Saturday, are 4 for 15 with runners in scoring position in the series. They've also gone three games without a homer, matching the longest drought of the season.

              Pick: Over

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                Streaking

                CC Sabathia, New York Yankees

The last time CC Sabathia faced the Philadelphia Phillies, that outing in the playoffs turned out to be his last before he joined the New York Yankees. This time, he'll be facing a pitcher who was simply outstanding in last year's postseason.

Two of the top left-handers in baseball square off Sunday when Sabathia and the Yankees take on Cole Hamels and the Phillies.

Sabathia (4-3, 3.43 ERA) was heroic down the stretch last year for Milwaukee, winning on three days' rest in his final two outings to get the Brewers into the postseason.

He took the mound on three days' rest again when he faced Philadelphia in Game 2 of the NL division series, but the result was a disaster. Sabathia gave up five runs in the second inning and was chased in the fourth as Milwaukee fell 5-2 and went on to lose the series in four games.

"I know CC well," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel told his team's official Web site. "He'll want to prove he can beat us. He'll give us everything he's got. At the same time, we'll give him everything we've got."

Sabathia joined New York (25-18) on a $161 million, seven-year contract in the offseason and has been stellar after a slow start.

He improved to 3-0 with a 1.13 ERA in his last three outings after beating Baltimore 9-1 on Tuesday. Sabathia gave up one run and three hits while striking out seven.

                Josh Outman, Oakland Athletics

The A's have lost of seven of their last nine and will turn to rookie Josh Outman (1-0, 3.31), who is looking for a third consecutive quality start in his first game against Arizona.

The left-hander, acquired in the deal that sent Joe Blanton to Philadelphia in July, allowed three hits with six strikeouts in six scoreless innings Tuesday, but Oakland lost 4-1 in 11 innings at Tampa Bay. That came six days after getting his first win of the season in a 7-2 victory over Kansas City by yielding one run and three hits in six innings.

                Slumping

                Scott Baker, Minnesota Twins

Struggling Scott Baker (1-5, 6.98) will go for Minnesota. After throwing seven scoreless innings against Seattle on May 8, Baker has allowed nine runs over 11 innings in his last two starts. He gave up four in five innings against the White Sox on Tuesday in a 6-2 loss.

The right-hander is 2-2 with a 5.63 ERA in four starts against the Brewers.

                Felix Hernandez, Seattle Mariners

Hernandez (4-3, 4.13) has lost three of his last four starts, giving up six runs in each of the defeats - including his last outing. He was reached for a season-high 11 hits in 5 2-3 innings as Seattle lost 6-5 to the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday night.

Fernandez won his only start against the Giants, surrendering four runs and six hits in six innings as the Mariners won 5-4 on June 16, 2006.

Like Zito, Fernandez may have trouble getting many runs to work with. Seattle has managed to win two of its last four games despite scoring a combined four runs over that stretch.

Game of the Day: Angels at Dodgers
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Angels at Los Angeles Dodgers (-184, 8)

It’s a short drive from Anaheim to Chavez Ravine where the cross town rival Angels and Dodgers will battle when Matt Palmer (5-0, 4.26 ERA) takes on Chad Billingsley (6-1, 2.51 ERA)

                  Man oh Manny

It’s a fact. Seven of the Top-10 home run hitters since 1980 have been linked with steroids. The newest member in the club is Manny Ramirez, currently sitting out a 50-game suspension for taking HGC, a fertility drug used to cause ovulation.

On May 6, Ramirez batted in the middle of their order as the Dodgers won a record-setting 13th consecutive home game to start the season. On May 7, Ramirez began a 50-game suspension for violating baseball's anti-drug program.

The feeling in the clubhouse was disbelief. "Sick and saddened," was the way general manager Ned Colletti described it. "Somber atmosphere," outfielder Andre Ethier said. "Disappointment. A little shock."

It’s been almost three weeks since the stunning news. The Dodgers were 21-8 with a 6.5-game lead on the second-place Giants at the time. Surprisingly, heading into the weekend series with the Angels, they had actually increased their lead to 8.5 games with Manny on his cycle.

                  Vlad to have you back

Last year at this time, the Angels were tied with the Oakland A's atop the American League West before pulling away en route to the franchise's first 100-win season.

The Halos started slow this year before being dealt a cruel blow in April when pitcher Nick Adenhart was killed in a tragic car accident. Following that tragedy, the Halos lost seven pitchers and top slugger Vladimir Guerrero to the DL.

Thanks to outstanding play from outfielder Torri Hunter and rock-solid efforts from their pitching staff, the Angels are back in the pennant race. Hunter leads the club in both home runs and RBIs and is playing Gold-Glove defense.

The best news is the return of Guerrero. His numbers with the Halos have been super. Vlad has hit .300 or better with 27 or more home runs in every season in Los Angeles.

Don’t be surprised if this isn’t a preview of the 2009 World Series.

                  Work horses

Chad Billingsley has become the ace of the Dodgers staff. He is second in the National League with 61 innings pitched and leads the majors in pitches thrown with 991. As a result, he's also thrown the most pitches per start, averaging just over 110 pitches per appearance.

Matt Palmer is the best surprise starter in the big leagues this season. The 30-year-old rookie is unbeaten, including a 9-inning complete-game victory against the Red Sox on May 13. Palmer lasted only five innings in his last start, a 6-5 win over the Mariners Tuesday.

                  History says

Prior to the start of this series, the Angels have defeated the Dodgers in 10 of the last 14 meetings in this series but were only 3-7 their last 10 games at Chavez Ravine.

The Dodgers enjoy home cooking on Sundays, where they are 8-2 the last 10 games.

Cleveland Cavaliers at Orlando Magic [TNT | 8:35 PM ET]

Cavaliers: Despite winning Game 2 on LeBron James' fadeaway 3-pointer at the buzzer, the Cavs have plenty to fix if they want to reclaim home-court advantage. The Magic ripped their defense apart, exposed their lack of depth and roared back from a double-digit deficit for the second straight game. Cleveland lost both games at Orlando this season, including a 29-point blowout in April in which it trailed by as many as 41. Orlando has started slow in the series' first two games, but Cleveland likely won't be able to count on such a cushion Sunday at Amway Arena, where the Magic usually start fast.

The Cavaliers are 11-2-1 ATS in their last 14 games overall.
The Cavaliers are 1-12 ATS in the last 13 meetings.

                            Key Injuries - NONE

                            PROJECTED SCORE: 92

Magic (1.5, O/U 190): The Magic have been last-second losers four times this postseason. Any carry-over seems unlikely. Orlando responded well after each of the previous heartbreakers, winning the following games against Philadelphia and nearly taking Game 5 against the Celtics before blowing a big fourth-quarter lead. The Magic have been a matchup nightmare at times for the Cavs, who have lost nine of the last 13 games to Orlando. The Magic, with their bevy of 3-point shooters and Howard inside, have picked apart Cleveland's defense for long stretches.

The Under is 6-1 in the Magic's last 7 playoff games as a favorite.
The Under is 26-10 in the Magic's last 36 games as a home favorite.

                            Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 98 (Side Play of the Day)

Philadelphia Phillies at New York Yankees [1:05 PM ET]

Phillies: "I know CC well," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel told his team's official Web site. "He'll want to prove he can beat us. He'll give us everything he's got. At the same time, we'll give him everything we've got." Cole Hamels pitched poorly at the start of 2009, but is 2-0 with a 2.31 ERA in his last five outings. He yielded three runs with seven strikeouts over six innings Tuesday to beat Cincinnati 4-3. This will be Hamels' second career start versus New York. He allowed two runs over seven innings on June 21, 2006, in a 5-0 loss at Citizens Bank Park. The Phillies are averaging 6.5 runs vs. lefty starters this season.

The Phillies are 14-4 in their last 18 games vs. a left-handed starter.
The Under is 11-2-1 in the Phillies' last 14 interleague games vs. a team with a winning record.

Sabathia gave up one run and three hits while striking out seven. Sabathia is 1-2 with a 6.61 ERA and 1.65 WHIP in three career starts against the Phillies. After New York had its nine-game winning streak snapped with Friday's 7-3 loss, the Yankees rallied for their major league-leading ninth victory in their final at-bat by winning 5-4 on Saturday. Melky Cabrera recorded his third walk-off hit of the season. The teams have combined for 11 homers in this series.

The Under is 6-1 in the last 7 meetings.

                                GREAT PITCHING

Kyle Lohse threw eight innings of four-hit ball and the St. Louis Cardinals shut out the Kansas City Royals 5-0 for the second straight game Saturday, giving the rotation its fifth straight dominant outing. Cardinals starters have allowed one run in 36 2-3 innings during a five-game winning streak in which St. Louis has outscored its opponents 18-2.

                                MILESTONE SHOT

Jason Giambi hit his 400th homer in the Oakland Athletics' 8-7 loss against the Arizona Diamondbacks, becoming the 44th player to reach the milestone. Giambi led off the fourth inning with a drive into the right-field bleachers off Dan Haren. The 38-year-old Giambi received a warm ovation from the crowd of 21,295 and then came back out of the dugout for a curtain call at the Coliseum.

                                LOOK AGAIN

Astros shortstop Miguel Tejada's first-inning drive to right led to the first replay review of the season at Minute Maid Park. Rangers manager Ron Washington argued a fan interfered with the ball but the umpires upheld the home run after watching the replay. ... Omir Santos hit a two-run homer off Jonathan Papelbon with two outs in the ninth inning, a drive that was initially ruled a double. The long flyball to left field bounced off the shelf above the Green Monster and was called a double. But after the umpires went into the tunnel for the television replay - the first in Fenway Park history - crew chief Joe West came out and signaled for a home run.

                                PATIENCE

Juan Pierre drew a walk with the bases loaded from Jose Arredondo in the 10th inning, giving the Dodgers a 5-4 victory over the Angels. It was the Dodgers third game-ending walk this season.

                                PROUD PAPA

John Mayberry Jr. hit a three-run homer off Andy Pettitte in his major league debut, but Philadelphia lost to the Yankees 5-4. Smiling in the stands and wearing a Phillies cap was Mayberry's father, John, a two-time All-Star who hit 255 homers in 15 big league seasons.

                                SPARKLING DEBUT

Minnesota's Anthony Swarzak won his major league debut, sprinkling five singles over seven shutout innings in the Twins' 6-2 victory over Milwaukee, walking two and striking out three. Swarzak's career was in trouble last season, when he was roughed up in 20 starts for Double-A New Britain. The year before, he tested positive for a drug of abuse - not a performance-enhancer - and drew a 50-game suspension.

                                SLUMPING STARTER

Detroit's Armando Galarraga allowed four runs on six hits and a walk in 5 1-3 innings of a 4-3 loss to Colorado. Galarraga is now 0-4 in five May starts with a 9.92 ERA after going 3-0 with a 1.85 ERA in four April outings.

                                PARTY ON

The Padres celebrated the 25th anniversary of their first NL pennant by honoring 12 players and coaches from the 1984 team, including Steve Garvey and Dave Dravecky. San Diego rallied from a 0-2 deficit to beat the Cubs that year in the NL championship series before losing the World Series in five games against Detroit.

                                SPEAKING

"They ran out as if the game was over. I said, 'Hey, we've still got some outs to get.' We have a different type of spirit on this team. A lot of times, it doesn't show. But they're still fighting until the end.'' - Mets manager Jerry Manuel said after New York celebrated Omir Santos' two-run homer in the top of the ninth inning of its 3-2 win over Boston.
