    Daily Sports Roundup

    Saturday, May 23

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The NBA's West Finals shift to Denver for Game 3 of Nuggets/Lakers, while baseball offers up more interleague matchups.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The Nuggets will try to wrestle a series lead away from the Lakers on Saturday night when the teams meet in Denver for the third game of their third-round series. The Nuggets came through with a 106-103 road victory in Game 2 on Thursday, as Carmelo Anthony poured in 34 points and Chauncey Billups added 27 points. Kobe Bryant paced the Lakers' attack with 32 points on 10-of-20 shooting in the loss, while Pau Gasol was good for 17 points and 17 rebounds.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The Braves will go with Derek Lowe (5-2, 3.58 ERA) on Saturday night as they continue their interleague series with the Blue Jays. Righthander Lowe had his four-game winning streak snapped last time out despite allowing just two earned runs over eight innings vs. the Rockies. Toronto will counter with Scott Richmond (4-2, 3.64 ERA); the righthander threw seven scoreless innings in his last outing.

The Yankees will go with Andy Pettitte (4-1, 4.18) ERA in their home game against the Phillies on Saturday afternoon, while the Red Sox will use Josh Beckett (4-2, 5.85) at Fenway against the Mets. As well, it's Kansas City at St. Louis, Texas at Houston, Pittsburgh at the White Sox, Colorado at Detroit, Baltimore at Washington, Cleveland at Cincinnati, Milwaukee at Minnesota, Tampa Bay at Florida, Arizona at Oakland, and San Francisco at Seattle. Also, the Angels and starter John Lackey (1-0, 9.00 ERA) will play at Dodger Stadium.

Finally, the Cubs will send Rich Harden (4-2, 4.74 ERA) to the mound late on Saturday night in an NL-only matchup in San Diego. Righthander Harden fell to the Astros last time out (four earned runs in six innings), picking up his first loss since April 15. San Diego is expected to tap Josh Geer (0-1, 5.61 ERA) on Saturday; the righthander has allowed 10 earned runs over his last 8 2-3 innings.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

The reeling Hurricanes will look to regroup at home on Saturday night when they host the Penguins in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference final. Pittsburgh got a hat trick from Evgeni Malkin on Thursday night as the Pens rolled to a 7-4 victory and a 2-0 series lead. Sidney Crosby added a goal and an assist for Pittsburgh in that contest, while Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 24 of 28 Carolina shots on the night. Hurricanes netminder Cam Ward was peppered with 41 shots, stopping 35.

      Six-pack for Saturday

-- Already this season, there have been nine pitchers put on the DL who pitched in the ill-conceived World Baseball Classic in March.

-- Jake Peavy tossed six shutout innings for San Diego, who batted Tony Gwynn Jr in the leadoff spot.

-- Jason Varitek hit five HRs in his first 24 ABs as a right-handed batter this season.

-- The new "cathedral" is a bandbox; in first 21 games in the Bronx, there have been 82 homers hit. If this happened in Kansas City or Denver or Seattle, eastern elitists would be raising hell, but no......

-- Six of the seven games played in AL parks stayed under the total Friday night; in NL parks, with no DHs, under was 5-2.

-- Lebron James is pretty freakin' good, eh?

      ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Saturday's List of 13: Famous names, obscure knowledge......

      13) Vice-President Joe Biden graduated from U of Delaware, where he ranked 506th in a class of 688; that said, he has received honorary degrees since then from seven different universities.

      12) There have been 44 US Presidents; Mr. Biden is the 47th VP.

      11) Donald Sterling bought the Clippers for $12.7M back in 1981-- Forbes Magazine estimated earlier this year they're worth $297M now, despite a history littered with ineptitude and losing.

      10) Kavin Garnett graduated from the same high school (Farragut) in Chicago as Wheel of Fortune host Pat Sajak; Sajak is on the Board of Trustees at Hillsdale College in Michigan, alma mater of 70's Green Bay Packers' kicker Chester Marcol.

      9) As of July 2008, Harrison Ford's movies have grossed $3.4B, just in this country. That's billion with a B. Ford is a self-taught carpenter who was once a stagehand for The Doors.

      8) One of Bob Costas' first broadcasting jobs was play-by-play guy for the Spirits of St Louis in the old ABA in the mid-70's.

      7) Tom Cruise went to eight different elementary schools and three different high schools, and also briefly attended Franciscan seminary school in Ohio-- yes, Tom Cruise thought about becoming a priest.

      6) Lakers' owner Jerry Buss went to college at Wyoming, and once was a chemist for the US Bureau of Mines.

      5) Bud Selig owned a big chunk of the Milwaukee Braves, but got rid of that when the team was moved to Atlanta; in 1968-69, White Sox played 20 "home" games in Milwaukee, and the games drew so many fans that it was instrumental in Selig buying the Seattle Pilots in 1969 and moving them to his hometown, where they became the Brewers.

      4) Talkshow host Jimmy Kimmel grew up mostly in Las Vegas, and went to college at both UNLV and Arizona State, fun places to go to school, but maybe too much fun, since Kimmel never graduated. He was once Ben Stein's sidekick on an MTV gameshow-- at one time, Stein was actually a speechwriter for Richard Nixon. Seriously.

      3) Before striking gold by founding, then selling broadcast.com, for a cool $6B, Mark Cuban was a bartender in the Dallas area, and also a disco dance instructor.

      2) Actress Mimi Rogers sits on the Board of Directors of the World Poker Tour. I'm guessing it would be easy for her to bluff me.

      1) Bill Murray has eight siblings, one of whom is a nun. One of his sons was at one time Director of Basketball Operations at Quinnipiac College in Connecticut. Murray's father was a lumber salesman.

            NBA playoffs

Kleiza played college basketball at Missouri with son of Denver owner Kroenke; he contributed 16 points, eight boards in Game 2 win that was a lot like Game 1 loss, except for the final score. Nuggets were -12 in the 5:59 that Anthony sat out in Game 2; he has to rest now and then, so it is important that someone (Martin? Carter?) step up and be scorer when Carmelo sits. Denver is 9-3 in playoffs, with all three losses by a hoop. Denver got to foul line more than Lakers in both games at Staples. Odd.

So far in four games in this round, total margin of victory is 7 points.

Pick ‘n’ Roll: NBA best bets
                -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Lakers at Denver Nuggets (-3.5, 211)

The Lakers were an NBA-best 29-12 on the road in the regular season, although they're just 2-3 away from Staples Center in the playoffs.

The Nuggets, conference finalists for the first time in 24 years, are 6-0 at home in the playoffs.

''When you don't have homecourt advantage, you just want to try to steal it however you can and we had a good opportunity in Game 1 and couldn't close out,'' Billups said. ''Game 2, we learned from our mistakes and closed out. So we stole homecourt advantage and now we just want to try to be aggressive and play like we have been playing on our home floor.''

The Nuggets now have the home court and also the pressure that goes along with it. Still, Bryant said he expects the Nuggets to turn it up a notch in Denver.

''They'll be playing looser, with more confidence, more energy, more aggression,'' Bryant said after Friday's film session and workout. ''... It's always been a tough place to play. They had a great home record last season, too. This season is no different.''

Actually, behind Billups, the first player in 20 years to play in seven straight conference championships, instead of Allen Iverson, these Nuggets aren't anything like the team that lost twice at home to the Lakers in last year's playoffs.

Take Thursday night's 106-103 win, their ninth in 12 playoff games. It also marked Denver's 12 ATS victory and second straight game in which the final played under the total.

                Pick: Under 211

                  --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Game of the Day: Lakers at Nuggets
                  --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Lakers at Denver Nuggets (-3.5, 211)

                  Playoff staple no longer

As the fourth quarter of Game 2 reached its conclusion at the Staples Center Thursday night, the Lakers' dominance over the Denver Nuggets in the postseason was put to an abrupt halt.

Chauncey Billups, who is no stranger to conference finals, sank 3-of-4 free throws following Kenyon Martin's running layup, securing the Nuggets 106-103 victory in front of a star-studded crowd that included Jack Nicholson, Tom Cruise, Denzel Washington and Will Ferrell.

"To get one on the road is always tough. We came in and got it," Carmelo Anthony told reporters. "We're mentally tough and we showed that in this game coming off the loss that we gave away in Game 1."

Denver not only earned its first victory of the series, but also its first ever playoff win against the Lakers. Los Angeles held an all-time 11-0 lead over the Nuggets, dating back to 1985. It was the second-longest postseason winning streak against a single team in NBA history.

                  Big bright shining stars

In Game 1, Lakers guard Kobe Bryant tallied 40 points, six rebounds, four assists and one blocked shot. Also in Game 1, Nuggets forward, Carmelo Anthony tallied 39 points, six rebounds, four assists and one blocked shot. Los Angeles won by two.

In Game 2, Anthony collected 34 points, nine rebounds, four assists, one block and a steal. Kobe wasn't far behind, racking up 32 points, five boards, three assists with a block and steal as well.

Each team's star rose to the occasion, to say the least.

LeBron James has dominated discussion boards, television shows, text messages and every article possible (all despite a Game 1 loss to Orlando), even though Kobe and Melo have combined to make the Western Conference finals an instant classic.

Anthony even made history Thursday night, when he became the first Nuggets player to score over 30 points in five consecutive postseason games - a feat that hadn't been accomplished since 1976.

By no means was Melo alone in Denver's Game 2 victory. Billups dropped in 27 points while grabbing 16 boards and Linas Kleiza and Kenyon Martin each chipped in with 16 points each.

Lakers center, Pau Gasol notched 17 points and 17 boards while Trevor Ariza added 20.

"They have home-court advantage now," Bryant told the media."Now it's time to go to Denver, see if we can do the same. We're not the best road team in the NBA for no reason."

Los Angeles finished the regular season 29-12 on the road, two games better than every other NBA team. The Lakers finished 1-1 in Denver during the regular season, losing 90-79 on their last trip to the Mile High City February 27.

                  Trends times three

With each of the first two games in this series being decided by one possession (two and three points respectively), playing the home town Nuggets at -3.5 could still be a risk – even with Denver posting a 5-0 record ATS in its last five Saturday games, a 7-0 record ATS in its last seven home games and a 10-1 record ATS in its last 11 games on one day's rest.

Consider playing the under, which is 5-0 in the last five games played in Denver and 8-1 in the last nine meetings overall.

Carolina led Game 2 3-2 after just 12:10 of play, but lost 7-5, in spite of killing off four Pittsburgh power plays (7:49). So far in series, Penguins have outshot Carolina 52-27 in periods 2-3, and they've outscored 'canes 4-3 in first periods. Carolina is 4-2 at home in series; this game is crucial, since comebacks from 3-0 deficits are rare. Five of the last six Pittsburgh games went over the total- they scored 16 goals in last three games.

                            --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pittsburgh Penguins at Carolina Hurricanes (-120, 5.5)

The Hurricanes can neither score nor shoot if they don't have the puck. And with so much of the series being played in front of Cam Ward, it's no surprise that the Penguins have controlled the stat sheet. Pittsburgh is outshooting Carolina 73-53 through two games.

''It's pretty hard to shoot the puck from our zone,'' forward Ray Whitney said.

Not surprisingly, that's helped the Penguins spend much of the past two games playing with a lead.

Their quick-strike scheme produced the opening goals in both games and is a major reason why they've trailed for just 11 minutes in the series. The Hurricanes took their only lead midway through the first period of Game 2, and it vanished in the opening minutes of the second.

''There's going to be high emotional swings, road buildings, momentum, difficult calls, shifts in momentum with the goals. ... I think our team has a mentality and tried to maintain the mentality that, no matter what happens, we're going to play the same way,'' Penguins coach Dan Bylsma said. ''We believe in the way we play, we know how to play that way, we know how to execute that way, and we just need to keep doing it over and over again, regardless of the situation.''

If the Penguins keep that up, and if the Hurricanes can't find a way to counter in front of what promises to be rowdy home crowd - where they are 4-2 this postseason - the series could end before its shift back to Pittsburgh next week for Game 5.

                            Pick: Over 5.5
