    Daily Sports Roundup

    Thursday, May 21

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Nuggets and Lakers continue the West Finals in Los Angeles, while the Canes and Penguins battle again in Pittsburgh.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

Kobe Bryant will try to lead his Lakers to a 2-0 series advantage on Thursday night when they host the Nuggets again in Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals. Bryant tossed in 40 points on Tuesday night in Los Angeles' slim 105-103 win, with Derek Fisher and Pau Gasol both providing 13 points. Carmelo Anthony was good for a team-high 39 points in a losing cause for the Nuggets. The oddsmakers have opened the Lakers as 5.5-point home favorites for Thursday.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The Royals will send ace Zack Greinke (7-1, 0.60 ERA) back out to the mound on Thursday afternoon in search of a home win over the Indians. The righthander held the Orioles to one earned run on six hits over seven innings in his last start, and he tossed five scoreless innings against the Indians in a victory back in April.

Elsewhere in afternoon action in the American League on Thursday it'll be Texas at Detroit, Minnesota at the White Sox, and Oakland at Tampa Bay, while the evening slate features Baltimore at the Yankees, Toronto at Boston, and the Angels at Seattle. Probable Angels starter Joe Saunders will be looking to bounce back from a bad outing against the Rangers (seven runs in 5 1-3 innings).

Over in the NL on Thursday the schedule includes Philadelphia at Cincinnati, Pittsburgh at Washington, Colorado at Atlanta, Arizona at Florida, Milwaukee at Houston, the Cubs at St. Louis, and San Francisco at San Diego. Righthander Tim Lincecum is the scheduled starter for the Giants on Thursday night; Lincecum was tagged with a loss by the Padres when he faced them on April 12.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

The Hurricanes will be looking to tie up the Eastern Conference final at 1-1 on Thursday night when they take on the Penguins in Game 2 in Pittsburgh. Miroslav Satan and Philippe Boucher scored their first goals of the playoffs on Monday night as Pittsburgh edged Carolina 3-2. Evgeni Malkin had the other Pens goal in the victory, while Marc-Andre Fleury made 23 saves. Cam Ward stopped 28 shots for the Canes, while Chad LaRose and Joe Corvo both tallied.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

Phil Mickelson was the 5/1 Vegas favorite to win this week's PGA Tour stop, the HP Byron Nelson Championship, but he withdrew on Wednesday for personal reasons. Adam Scott, the 2008 champion, has struggled on Tour this year, and is back at 25/1 odds to grab the trophy this week. Justin Leonard, Ian Poulter, and Anthony Kim are all at 15/1, while Vijay Singh is in a group of golfers back at 20/1 odds to take the tournament being played at TPC Four Seasons Resort in Irving, Texas.

      Six-pack for Thursday

-- Long day of baseball at Land Shark Stadium, where Arizona and Florida started a twinbill at 5:00 Wednesday, and finished it at 1:48 the next morning. Marlins scored eight runs in both games, but split the doubleheader, as Upton knocked in six runs in the nightcap.

-- Cubs lost first two games of a series in St Louis, scoring once.

-- Astros batted out of order, but still ended Milwaukee's winning streak; why do these teams have bench coaches, anyway?

-- Pirates beat Washington in ninth inning, their fifth straight win.

-- Orlando was down 16 in Cleveland, but rallied and won 107-106, handing Cavaliers just their third home loss all season.

-- WWE-Nuggets dispute ended with wrestling company moving its live Monday night show to Staples Center in Los Angeles.

Thursday's List of 13: My take on the Michael Vick situation

Thursday's List of 13: My take on the Michael Vick situation

First of all, I really think Michael Vick has paid his debt to society, and should be allowed to play football if someone wants to give him a chance, but that is just one of many question is this sad story....

      On the field

      13) What effect did his confinement have on his physical condition? Vick was a great runner; will he be just as athletic two years later?

      12) Assuming a team signs him and he became the starting QB, will the other players follow him? I think they would if he showed he could still play, but he still has to show that. He's a long way from becoming an NFL starting quarterback.

      11) Would a team that signs him keep him at QB, or want him as a Wildcat Formation guy, a hybrid runner/passer?

      10) His passing was never that accurate even in the best of times, so did 23 months of confinement hurt his accuracy even more?

      9) Wouldn't it be weird if the Browns signed him and he played his home games in the Dawg Pound?

      Off the Field
      8) Will the NFL suspend him for part of this season? I'm thinking no, because once Tony Dungy went to visit him, that helped his cause. The guy has lost a ton in this situation, deservedly so, but seriously, enough already.

      7) The quarterback, in most cases, is the face of your franchise; will any NFL team in this image-conscious era want Vick as that guy?

      6) What teams are most likely to take a chance on him? I'm thinking that these six teams are the most likely to take a shot on Vick......
-- Denver-- Imagine linemen chasing Vick in Mile High altitude?
-- Houston-- Newest NFL franchise starved for first playoff spot.
-- Minnesota-- Assuming ol' Brett Favre stays in Mississippi.
-- San Francisco-- Could Singletary be a father figure for Vick?
-- Seattle-- Vick played for Jim Mora, Jr with the Falcons.
-- Washington-- They seem to go after every available quarterback.

If you were thinking Oakland/Dallas, they're well-stocked at QB.

      5) An owner's other businesses might take hit because of protestors, so whoever signs Vick is going to need a fairly thick skin.

      4) After reading some of his bankruptcy papers, its clear Vick isn't too bright a guy; do you want to bring this kind of drama into your franchise? Will Vick surround himself with better people this time?

      3) His finances are such a mess, his life is in such chaos, how can he possibly focus on football?

      2) Vick's timing is awful, since there is no Arena Football, and CFL is going to be started before his sentence ends July 20. Playing in one of those leagues might have been a help in Vick's getting back in shape.

      1) I'd like to see this guy get a second chance, because I think we all deserve one. I am in no way condoning Vick's activities, but someday, someone has to explain to me the difference between dog fighting and hunting, how one is illegal and the other accepted.

        Len’s Top Five

        Thursday, May 21

        Len's Top 5

Happy Thursday everyone, here's my Top 5 for May 21, 2009 from Len Berman Sports.

        1. Quick Hits

Orlando hands Cleveland first playoff loss in game 1, 107-106, despite 49 points from LeBron James.

Opposite directions. 8 straight Yankee wins, 4 straight Mets losses.

Phil Mickelson takes leave of absence from PGA tour as his wife battles breast cancer.

Wife of Arizona reliever Scott Schoeneweis found dead at their home. Gabrielle Schoeneweis, mother of 4, was 39 years old. No cause listed.

        2. The Fourth Estate

While New York newspapers are having a field day comparing the current Mets to their bumbling forefathers, it's gotten much more serious in Boston. Sportswriter Dan Shaughnessy, commenting about the slumping David Ortiz: "This is bad. This is embarrassing. He looks like he's finished. He could take the team down."
Having lived in Boston, I think it's the end of civilization as we know it. Or maybe not. Ortiz homered last night, ending the longest drought of his career.

        3. Signage

Who is jubilant that all those home runs are flying out in the New Yankee Stadium? According to the Wall Street Journal, the advertisers who have signs in right field. Sharper Image says they couldn't be happier with their investment. How times have changed. At Ebbets Field it was Abe Stark's clothing store. "Hit Sign, Win Suit." My favorite sign-moment might have been in Texas when Rafael Palmeiro, a Viagra pitchman, hit a home run off the Viagra sign. We now know the stuff he was taking wasn't Viagra.

        4. Bathroom Humor

It wasn't easy being a Mets fan this week. According to the New York Post a woman had to be rescued when she got her arm stuck in the toilet at Citi Field. She was trying to rescue her gold tooth. She was charged with an error for the drop, but the plumbing company was credited with a save. Only in Flushing, New York.

        5. Oink

As if that wasn't bad enough for the Mets, a Liberty New York woman came down with the swine flu 3 days after going to a game at Citi Field. And Joe Pig-natano is no longer a Mets coach. Art S-HAM-sky doesn't play for them either. Ring Lard-ner wasn't in the press box, and Kevin Bacon wasn't even in the stands. Should I go on?

Today's Birthday: Former Notre Dame coach Ara Parseghian. 86.
Bonus Birthday: I pity the fool who doesn't know Mr. T. is 57.

Today in Sports: Heavyweights Jim Corbett and Peter Jackson fight to a 61 round draw in San Francisco. 1891.
Bonus Event: Everything's Coming up Roses. A show about a stripper (Gypsy) opens on Broadway. 50 years ago today.

                NBA playoffs

Denver bench was 4-15 in tough Game 1 loss; Lakers were +7 without Bryant, -5 when he was on floor. Lakers won four of five vs Denver this year, winning by 14-14-2 at Staples, but Nuggets are 8-3 in playoffs this spring, 2-3 on road, with all three losses by a hoop. Gasol had six boards on offensive end- Lakers had 19 as a team. Nuggets need more help from the bench-- Anthony can't do everything by himself.

Denver Nuggets at Los Angeles Lakers [ESPN | 9:05 PM ET]

Nuggets: The Nuggets have now lost 11 consecutive playoff games to the Lakers after losing Game 1. "We played 46 1/2 solid minutes, just the last minute or so got away from us. But we can take a lot of things from it that we did well," Kenyon Martin said. "We just need to eliminate some of the little mistakes and go from there." A day later, the Nuggets were feeling they outplayed the Lakers most of the way but had nothing to show for it. "Our heads are still high. We're still standing tall, we're still confident," Carmelo Anthony said. "We did everything but win the game. We can take that as a good sign. We're going to respond, I guarantee you we respond."

The Nuggets are 4-13 ATS in the last 17 meetings in Los Angeles.
The Under is 18-5 in the Nuggets' last 23 playoff games as an underdog.

Key Injuries - G J.R. Smith (knee) is QUESTIONABLE.

                    PROJECTED SCORE: 105

Lakers (-5.5, O/U 210.5): "Just on defense alone we can be more productive," Lamar Odom said. "We know we can play a lot better than we did." Denver's front line outmuscled Gasol, Bynum and Odom. In Game 2, coach Phil Jackson expects Bynum's focus to be in the low post, while letting Gasol and Odom play away from the basket. "He's got to be a power player in there and he's got to be a big guy that makes them feel small and uses his size against them," the coach said. "Pau and Lamar can be active enough to do things out on the floor to change the game up. They can pass the ball and dribble the ball. They have to be really mobile and have that attack idea."

The Lakers are 10-3 ATS in the last 13 meetings.
The Lakers are 1-7 ATS in their last 8 games following a SU win.

                    Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 110 (OVER - Total Play of the Day)

Denver Nuggets at Los Angeles Lakers (-5.5, 210.5)

Nobody was feeling luckier than Kobe Bryant a day after rescuing the Los Angeles Lakers from certain defeat against the Denver Nuggets in their Western Conference finals opener.

"We just kind of got away with one," he said, grinning. "It happens sometimes."

Bryant scored 40 points, including six free throws in the final 30 seconds Tuesday night, to give the Lakers a 105-103 victory after being outplayed most of the game.

Call it stealing one at home.

"It was one of those gutty performances that you have to have throughout the postseason," Bryant said after practice Wednesday. "We had everything working against us - mistakes, loose balls, bobbling balls out of bounds. It just seemed like one of those nights, but we managed to pull through it."

Game 2 is Thursday night at Staples Center. The Nuggets have lost 11 consecutive playoff games to the Lakers, including a first-round sweep last season.

"We played 46 1/2 solid minutes, just the last minute or so got away from us. But we can take a lot of things from it that we did well," Kenyon Martin said. "We just need to eliminate some of the little mistakes and go from there. That's the beauty of it, there's another game tomorrow."

Bryant was forced into playing both ends of the floor after teammate Trevor Ariza couldn't stop Denver's Carmelo Anthony, who owned a lackluster history against the Lakers until exploding for 39 points.

Bryant started out defending Chauncey Billups (18 points), then took on J.R. Smith (eight points) before sliding over late to Anthony, his U.S. Olympic teammate. Forget asking coach Phil Jackson for permission to change defensive assignments, either.

"We have the type of relationship where I just do it," Bryant said. "Whatever it took to win the game, I had to do. It was fun."

Anthony had a breakout game, going 14 of 20 from the floor, including 4 of 5 from 3-point range, 7 of 8 from the line, with six rebounds and four assists.

"He's been phenomenal," Billups said. "For a while he fell out of that whole LeBron (James), D-Wade, Melo talk and I'm happy that he's back where he should be. He's led his team to the Western Conference finals and he's been the best player on our team all year."

But Anthony doesn't consider himself the kind of one-man show Bryant had to be for the Lakers.

"I don't really think it's about me putting up numbers," Anthony said. "I'm not going to beat the Lakers by myself. Chauncey's not going to beat the Lakers by himself. We need our bench, our X-factor guys J.R. (Smith), LK (Linas Kleiza) and Birdman (Chris Andersen). We need everybody like we've been doing it so far."

Smith sprained his right knee in the game, but he said it was better Wednesday.

"I'm definitely going to play," he said. "I'll be ready for tomorrow."

Ariza referred to Anthony's defensive domination of him as "getting served." But Bryant expects Ariza will come better prepared Thursday.

"He doesn't back down," Bryant said. "Carmelo had his way with him in the first game. He's not the only one who's had his way with him, so he shouldn't feel bad about it."

A day later, the Nuggets were feeling they outplayed the Lakers most of the way but had nothing to show for it.

"Our heads are still high. We're still standing tall, we're still confident," Anthony said. "We did everything but win the game. We can take that as a good sign. We're going to respond, I guarantee you we respond."

The Lakers' big men will be looking to make a stand, something 7-footers Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum didn't accomplish in Game 1. They were outscored 29-19 by the shorter duo of Martin and Nene. Bynum was limited by foul trouble, and Gasol had four fouls.

"Just on defense alone we can be more productive," Lamar Odom said. "We were lucky to kind of stay in that game. We know we can play a lot better than we did."

Denver's front line outmuscled Gasol, Bynum and Odom. In Game 2, Jackson expects Bynum's focus to be in the low post, while letting Gasol and Odom play away from the basket.

Denver coach George Karl seemingly took the loss harder than his players. He sat in silence for several seconds after being asked about the game. By Wednesday, though, the emotion of losing in the final seconds had dissipated.

"I like our chances if you give us a six-point lead with four minutes to go," he said. "I'll take our chances winning this series. I'll sign that contract tomorrow."

                      Pick: Under

Game of the Day: Nuggets at Lakers
                        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Denver Nuggets at Los Angeles Lakers (-5.5, 210.5)

                        Down and out?

The Nuggets had Game 1 in their grasp and could have drawn first blood in the Western Conference Finals. Instead the Lakers held serve on their home floor thanks to another heroic effort from Kobe Bryant. The good news for Denver fans is that their team looked like the better side.

“We missed out on a great opportunity to steal this game,” said point guard Chauncey Billups. “We're going to continue to fight.”

The Nuggets are behind for the first time in the postseason, but aren’t lacking confidence. Poor free-throw shooting was the difference with Denver shooting 23-35 (65.7 percent) from the stripe. The steal near the end of the game sealed it, but was hardly the main cause for the setback.

All three of the Nuggets playoff losses have been by two points while their eight wins have been by 19.3 points per game. Denver will be back.

                        Trendy history lesson

The Lakers’ victory in Game 1 made it 11 straight playoff wins over Denver, which is the fourth longest streak in NBA history. I consider this one of those stats that the media loves to throw out there and make too much of a big deal. Past history means nothing in the playoffs, especially considering the Nuggets are far from the same team that was swept by Los Angeles last season.

Trends like this are often eaten up by bettors and that shouldn’t be the case. This is similar to the trend from the Eastern Conference semifinals showing that Boston was 32-0 in its history when leading a playoff series 3-2.

                        Make that 32-1 now.

I was on the Celtics in that final game but it was certainly not backed by that historical record.

History tells us the Lakers will sweep this series. Does anyone really believe that will be the case? Here is another meaningless trend. Phil Jackson coached teams that won Game 1 have a 42-0 series record. Denver might as well just pack it in now then.

ESPN can be a great source for your fantasy stats and NFL breakdowns, but it is not good for these meaningless numbers it throws out.

                        Disappearing act

In order for the Nuggets to win this series, they need to get the ball in the hands of the right player. Chauncey Billups is the veteran point guard leading this team but the player being revered is Carmelo Anthony. He had an incredible opening game but disappeared when the team needed him most.

Kobe Bryant took over in the fourth quarter for the Lakers and Anthony needs that type of timely effort to become part of Kobe’s company. He led the Nuggets with 39 points on 14-20 shooting including 4-5 from long range while hitting 7-8 from the free throw line. Yet while Bryant was taking the game over, Anthony did not score in the remaining 3:25 of the game and Denver leading 96-92.

“I could have been a little bit more selfish,” Anthony said after the game, “but I don't think it came down to that.”

Yes it did Melo. All night long he took advantage of what the Lakers defense was allowing him to do but in the clutch, he stayed back in closing minutes.

The NBA wants to see a Bryant versus LeBron NBA Finals. I for one would not mind seeing a LeBron vs. Melo Finals – a matchup the first and third overall picks from the 2003 draft. Either way, Anthony will need to continue scoring and do so late in order for Denver to be able to advance.
