    Daily Sports Roundup

    Wednesday, May 20

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: LeBron James and the Cavaliers try to continue their march through the postseason, and the Rays take on the Athletics.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The Cavaliers will be looking to keep their playoff winning streak intact on Wednesday night when they host the Magic in the opening game of the Eastern Conference Finals. The Cavs are coming off back-to-back sweeps of the Pistons and Hawks in the first two rounds of the postseason, closing out Atlanta with an 84-74 win on May 11. The Magic bounced the defending-champion Celtics in the second round, cruising to a 101-82 win in that series' deciding contest on Sunday.

Oddsmakers are still with the Cavaliers for the third round, as they've been listed as 9-point home favorites for Wednesday night; Cleveland has managed to cover seven of eight spreads so far in the postseason, while Orlando is 6-7 vs. the number over 13 games. The total for the series opener is pegged at 184.5 points.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

Struggling Rays starter Scott Kazmir (4-3, 6.97 ERA) will be looking to get back on track on Wednesday night when his team continues their home series against the Athletics. The lefthander was knocked around for seven earned runs on 10 hits over 3 1-3 innings of work against the Indians last time out. Kazmir, though, did beat the Athletics back on April 24. Taking the mound for Oakland with be lefthander Brett Anderson, who is winless at 0-4 with a 6.03 ERA in six outings.

Also on the American League schedule for Wednesday: Texas at Detroit, Baltimore at the Yankees, Cleveland at Kansas City, Minnesota at the White Sox, the Angels at Seattle, and Toronto at Boston. Probable Blue Jays starter Brett Cecil is 2-0 with an impressive 1.80 ERA in his three starts for the team this year.

Over in the National League on Wednesday the Cardinals are expected to turn to Chris Carpenter for their home game against the rival Cubs. The righthander went just 10 innings at the beginning of the season before landing on the DL with a strained ribcage muscle, going 1-0 without allowing an earned run. The Cubs counter with Ryan Dempster, who is 3-2 with a 4.65 ERA through his eight starts.

Elsewhere in the Senior Circuit on Wednesday it'll be Pittsburgh at Washington, Philadelphia at Cincinnati, Colorado at Atlanta, Milwaukee at Houston, San Francisco at San Diego, and the Mets at the Dodgers. As well, the Diamondbacks and Marlins will stage a doubleheader in Florida starting at 5:10pm ET; the scheduled Monday game between those teams was rained out.

      Six-pack for Wednesday

-- Dontrelle Willis allowed one hit over 6.1 IP as Detroit ended the Rangers' 7-game win streak, 4-0. Best start in years for Willis.

-- Matt Holliday smacked a 2-out, 3-run homer in the 11th, as the A's won 4-1 in St Pete, spoiling a great start by James Shields.

-- Joel Pineiro threw a 91-pitch complete game 3-hitter against the Cubs, as St Louis ended a skid, beating Chicago 3-0.

-- Royals scored four runs in ninth off Kerry Wood, extending the Indians' misery with a 6-5 win at Kauffman Stadium.

-- LA Clippers won the NBA Lottery, which means Blake Griffin should break a bone sometime around Election Day.

-- Ugliness for Sacramento, which went 17-65 this year but slipped to #4 in the draft; if it wasn't for bad luck, they would have none.

Wednesday's List of 13: Random thoughts on a spring day.......

      13) Kentucky signed prize recruit John Wall Tuesday, as Calipari is going to have a 1-and-done point guard for third year in a row. First two (Rose/Evans) fared well, but Wall is going to be playing in SEC, not C-USA. Still, Kentucky is suddenly a top-25 team next fall, and if Jodie Meeks comes back, they move up to top five in nation.

      12) NFL Network isn't happy with Jon Gruden's deal with ESPN- they thought Gruden had agreed to sign with them. ESPN offered the Monday Night gig to Gruden at the last minute, and that was that.

      11) Jason Taylor will get $1.5M from Dolphins if he hits incentives in his contract; if he had stayed with the Redskins, he would have made cool $8.5M- -guess he didn't like suburban Maryland too much.

      10) Part of the problem the Mets have is they're jerking around with moving guys around too much- they have to find everyday 1B with Delgado out now, maybe for the rest of the season.

      9) That said, its still hard to believe major league teams don't take infield practice before games, especially teams like the Mets who are breaking in players at new positions. Practice makes perfect?

      8) If you ever find yourself at TGIFriday's restaurant, I recommend the chicken parm sliders-- they're excellent!!!!!!

      7) Shaquille O'Neal is taking a broadcast class at Syracuse this spring as he prepares for his post-playing career in either radio or TV. Nice to see someone actually prepare for their next career.

      6) Have to think this is first time ever a horse has won a race in the Triple Crown, but still used a different jockey in all three legs of the Triple Crown. Mike Smith has an obligation in California on Belmont Day-- why are there big races in California on Belmont Day?????

      5) Cleveland Indians are 3-5 in Carmona's starts; they scored 22-9-11 runs in the three wins, a total of 13 runs in the five losses. Tampa is 5-0 with Kazmir if they score 7+ runs, 0-3 of they score less than 7.

      4) #125 on the PGA Tour money list is Charles Warren ($263,638); so far this season, 33 golfers have already earned $1,000,000+. Top 125 is what it takes to keep your card for next season.

      3) Looks like former Miami QB Marve is going to Purdue, which is a downgrade in both weather and level of competition, but Boilers need him, so he'll be playing for Purdue in the fall of 2010.

      2) Red Wings scored in OT to take 2-0 series lead over Chicago in the Western Conference finals of Stanley Cup playoffs. Red Wings have won ten of their thirteen playoff games this spring.

      1) I'm wondering what kind of classes the 1-and-done college hoopers take in school-- seriously, I mean this, Calipari is so sharp, it would benefit him to have courses a kid like Derrick Rose should take that will help him prepare for life in the public eye, right? Public speaking or basic money management. Would be interesting to find out.......

        Len’s Top Five

        Wednesday, May 20

        Len's Top 5

Happy Wednesday everyone, here's my Top 5 for May 20, 2009 from Len Berman Sports.

        1. Quick Hits

The LA Clippers won the NBA draft lottery. Their expected top pick is Oklahoma star Blake Griffin.
Kobe Bryant scores 40 points as the Lakers beat Denver in game 1 of the Western Conference Finals 105-103.

Quarterback Michael Vick was released from prison this morning after 18 months. He'll begin two months of home confinement in Hampton Virginia.

He's b-a-a-c-k. A-Rod homers in 4th consecutive game as Yankees win 7th straight. (But that's only half the story, see below.)

        2. The Tipping Point

Author Malcolm Gladwell wrote The Tipping Point and Blink. They're about human behavior. He told ESPN that they should do away with the NBA draft. The worst teams shouldn't get to pick first. He says if you reward an atrocious general manager, "where is the incentive not to be an atrocious GM?" Gladwell is always entertaining, but take from it what you will. In Tipping Point he wrote that people don't smoke to be cool, he opines "cool people smoke." Oh.

        3. Smackdown

WWE has been pinned! Vince McMahon's crew booked the Pepsi Center in Denver for Monday Night Raw but he's been booted out. The Denver Nuggets will be hosting the LA Lakers instead. McMahon says "he doesn't know what to do." He's got equipment, TV commitments. Sounds like he's gearing up to try to extort some money from the Pepsi Center for getting bumped. Settle it in a steel cage!

        4. A-SPN

Here we go again. According to the NY Post, Kate Hudson was at the Yankee game the other night. And later, at an East Side restaurant they were "celebrating the Yankees win" in a back room together. A-Rod has said he's committed to flying "under the radar" this year. How's that working out so far?

        5. Changing Places

Basketball great Shaquille O'Neal is studying how to become a sportscaster at my alma mater, Syracuse. In return, I'm learning how to miss a ton of foul shots.

Today's Birthday: The Boomer. The guy who says "get caught once using steroids, and you should be banned for life." Former Yankee pitcher David Wells. 46.
        Bonus Birthday: Cher. 63.

Today in Sports: Michael Jordan wins the 2nd of 5 NBA MVP awards. What, he only won 5? 1992.
Bonus Event: Charles Lindbergh takes off from Long Island and becomes the first to fly solo across the Atlantic. (I think he left Long Island because of the high property taxes.) 1927.

Orlando Magic at Cleveland Cavaliers [TNT | 8:35 PM ET]

Magic: "You can't be afraid," said Dwight Howard on guarding LeBron James. "When he comes down the lane, you have to stand in the lane. You have to sacrifice your body for the betterment of the team. We understand that. We have to keep him out of the lane. He's going to get in there sometimes, but we have to be able to force him out." Rookie guard Courtney Lee will return to the starting lineup, replacing J.J. Redick, who started every game against the Celtics and did a nice defensive job on Ray Allen. Orlando won both games at home against Cleveland in the regular season, including a 116-87 win on 4/3 - the Cavs' worst loss in 90 games.

The Magic are 10-1 ATS in the last 11 meetings.
The Under is 22-8 in the Magic's last 30 overall.

                    Key Injuries - NONE

                    PROJECTED SCORE: 86

Cavaliers (-8.5, O/U 184.5): Cleveland has lost just once since getting beat by the Magic on 4/3, and that was the season finale against Philadelphia, a game LeBron James, Zydrunas Ilgauskas and Mo Williams sat out to get extra rest for the playoffs. In three games against Orlando, James averaged 30.7 points, 9.7 rebounds and 7 assists. James and his teammates should have fresher legs than the Magic, who have played 13 games in the postseason to Cleveland's eight. Cleveland was the top defensive unit during the regular season and is limiting opponents to just 78.1 points so far in the playoffs.

The Cavaliers are 11-0-1 ATS in their last 12 games overall.
The Cavaliers are 18-4-1 ATS in their last 23 playoff games as a favorite.

Key Injuries - G Mo Williams (shoulder) is PROBABLE.

PROJECTED SCORE: 94 (UNDER - Total Play of the Day)

Pick ‘n’ Roll: NBA best bets
                      -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Orlando Magic at Cleveland Cavaliers (-9, 184.5)

Mike Malone has always followed his father Brendan's advice. A respectful son, he still calls his dad regularly for guidance on life and hoops. Those conversations are on hold.

"Now that it's us against them," Mike Malone said with a smile, "I don't plan on talking to him for a little while."

Papa Malone won't be dialing his son's number either.

"We'll probably see each other on the court, and that's it," Brendan Malone said.

There's a family subplot to this season's Eastern Conference final between Cleveland and Orlando. The Malone family is divided. Mike, tracing his father's coaching footsteps, is in his fourth season as an assistant with the Cavaliers while Brendan, Cleveland's interim coach for 18 games at the end of LeBron James' second pro season, is on Stan Van Gundy's staff in Orlando.

With the best-of-seven series set to open on Wednesday night, the younger Malone made an obvious prediction on the outcome.

"There will be a Malone in the NBA finals," he said.May the best Malone win.

After sitting around for the second time in these playoffs, the series-sweeping Cavaliers, who broomed Detroit and Atlanta into early summer vacations, are expecting a much stiffer challenge from the Magic. Orlando won both of their matchups at home against Cleveland during the regular season, including a 116-87 thrashing on April 3 - the Cavaliers' worst loss in 90 games.

Cleveland has lost just once since that mauling by the Magic, and that setback came in overtime in the April 15 season finale against Philadelphia, a game James, Zydrunas Ilgauskas and Mo Williams sat out to get extra rest for the playoffs.

Coming off a second-round upset of the defending champion Celtics, the Magic, who won Game 7 on Boston's parquet floor, are a confident bunch heading into Game 1.

"We're not satisfied," Orlando center Dwight Howard said Tuesday. "Yeah, we are happy we got past the second round. But we're not satisfied. We don't want to just be happy and hand them the series. We have enough talent to win a championship, and we don't want to let an opportunity slip by."

Same goes for the Cavaliers, who don't seem too concerned about the Magic despite last month's lopsided loss in Florida.

"Hopefully, they're comfortable and feeling themselves right now," Williams said. "We're a different team - trust me. We're motivated to play. We're focused."

For the opener, Van Gundy will return rookie guard Courtney Lee to the starting lineup, replacing J.J. Redick, who started every game against the Celtics and did a nice defensive job on Ray Allen. Lee has been coming off the bench since fracturing his sinus in the Philadelphia series.

"We figured they would do that," Cavs coach Mike Brown said.

Devising a defensive strategy to slow Howard and the Magic's talented troop of outside shooters will fall partly on Mike Malone, Cleveland's unofficial defensive coordinator. Since joining Brown's staff, Malone has helped the Cavs become one of the league's stingiest teams.

Cleveland was the top defensive unit during the regular season and is limiting opponents to 40 percent shooting (31 percent on 3s) and just 78.1 points so far in the playoffs. The Magic, averaging 96.1 points in the postseason, shot 54 percent in the April 3 win over Cleveland, making 13 of 27 3-pointers.

"This team poses so many problems with Dwight and the shooters around him," Mike Malone said. "You have to make sure you guard Dwight first, and get out to their shooters. They've got a bunch of guys who can knock it down. That's who they are."

And while the Cavaliers are balanced, they have something the Magic can't match: James.

The league MVP has taken his game to an even higher level in the playoffs. He's averaging 32.9 points, 9.8 rebounds, 6.8 assists and seems more determined than ever to deliver a title to a city that hasn't celebrated a championship since the Browns won it all in 1964.

In three games against Orlando, James averaged 30.7 points, 9.7 rebounds and 7.0 assists. On March 17, he dropped 43 points on the Magic in a 97-93 win.

Howard feels there's only one approach to take in guarding James.

"You can't be afraid," said the league's defensive player of the year. "When he comes down the lane, you have to stand in the lane. You have sacrifice your body for the betterment of the team. We understand that. We have to keep him out of the lane. He's going to get in there sometimes, but we have to be able to force him out."

James and his teammates should have fresher legs than the Magic, who have played 13 games in the postseason to Cleveland's eight. During the layoff, James invited the Cavaliers over to his house to grill out, watch playoff games on TV and bowl. (Yes, King James has customized lanes in his 35,000-square foot mansion).

James was flattered to hear Hall of Famer Jerry West said the 24-year-old has surpassed Kobe Bryant as the league's best player.

"That's great," James said following practice. "That's the man who is the logo of the NBA. You can't play basketball without seeing Jerry West every single day. For him to say something like that is humbling."

James was then asked if only he could stop himself.

Game of the Day: Orlando Magic at Cleveland Cavaliers
                        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Orlando Magic at Cleveland Cavaliers (-9, 184.5)

                        We got your number

The Cavaliers have been the pointspread story of the Eastern Conference playoffs thus far thanks to a 7-0-1 against the spread record. Cleveland is 8-0 straight up and has won all its playoff games by double digits.

But before we get too carried away with the Cavaliers postseason success, let’s not forget about one key factor in play in this series: Orlando has been absolutely dominant against Cleveland.

Dating back to the All-Star break last season, these two teams have met five times. Orlando is 4-1 SU, 5-0 ATS in those games, including a 15-point win on the Cavs’ home floor.

The Magic won both home games by a combined margin of 40 points in the three previous meetings this year. In their lone game at Cleveland, Orlando led with less than a minute to play, but LeBron James nailed a crucial 3-pointer and Dwight Howard was called for a three-second violation on the Magic’s subsequent possession, allowing the Cavs to steal a four-point victory.

                        Not in our house

The Cavaliers enjoyed the single strongest home-court advantage of any team in the league this year. Cleveland went 39-2 SU at home with one of those two losses coming in a meaningless season finale that featured numerous starters resting. The other loss came against the Lakers when L.A. was red hot, closing out a 6-0 road trip with consecutive wins over the Celtics and Cavs.

Here in the playoffs the Cavs have been every bit as dominant on this floor. Mike Brown’s squad has won each of its four playoff games at Quicken Loans Arena by a combined 79 points with each victory coming by at least a dozen points.

The Cavs pointspread success playing in Cleveland can’t be denied – their tremendous straight up record is backed by an equally impressive pointspread run. That tells us that the betting marketplace has not been overvaluing LeBron James and his teammates. A 32-13 ATS mark at home must be respected by bettors and bookmakers.

                        Magical Mystery Tour

But before we give Cleveland too much credit here, let’s not forget that the Magic ranked second in the NBA with 27 road victories during the regular season. Here in the playoffs, the Magic have continued their string of road success.

After losing Game 3 on the road at Philadelphia, Orlando closed out that series with a pair of SU road wins, including the Game 6 clincher. The Magic continued their winning ways on the highway at Boston, knocking off the defending champs twice on their home floor, including another clincher blowout; their 19-point SU win in Game 7.

The Magic will be underdogs in every road game in this series. Stan Van Gundy’s squad has been exceptionally profitable in the underdog role, with a 15-6 ATS mark when catching points since the start of the season.

                        Matchups

The Magic nailed 13 of 21 shots from beyond the arc to win Game 7 at Boston with contributions from all their perimeter players. Rafer Alston, J.J. Redick, Rashard Lewis, Hedo Turkoglu and Michael Pietrus all nailed at least one trifecta on Sunday.

The Magic had great success utilizing the 3-pointer during the regular season, making more 3s than any other team in the league. Orlando hit 34 treys in their three regular season meetings with the Cavaliers, leading to that 3-0 ATS mark in those ballgames.

The two superstars in this series both enjoyed tremendous success against the opposing defense throughout the course of the regular season. Dwight Howard averaged 18 points, 14 rebounds and four blocks against Cleveland. LeBron James was even better, averaging 31 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists in his three games against Orlando.

                        Under My Thumb

Two of the three regular season meetings stayed under the total. The only over came in a game where Orlando hung 116 on the Cavs while hitting 54 percent from the floor. That game marked the single worst defensive showing from Cleveland all year long and was one of only two games that the Cavs allowed more than 110 in regulation.

The under trend dates back to last year with four of the last five meetings finishing under the total. But three of those five games produced 190 or more points, with posted totals as high as 204 in some cases. For Game 1 on Wednesday, the posted total is nearly 20 points lower than that, currently sitting at 184.5.
