    Daily Sports Roundup

    Tuesday, May 19

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Lakers and Nuggets tip off the NBA's West Finals, while the Red Wings try for another victory against the Blackhawks.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The third round of the NBA playoffs tips off on Tuesday night with the Nuggets visiting the Lakers in the opener of the Western Conference Finals. Los Angeles dispatched the Rockets with authority in Game 7 of their second-round series on Sunday, rolling to an 89-70 home win. Pau Gasol led the way with 21 points and 18 boards in that contest. Denver knocked out the Mavericks in just five games last round, winning 124-110 in the clincher. The Lakers have been pegged as 6.5-point favorites at Staples Center for Tuesday, with a high total of 215 points.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

Dodgers righthander Chad Billingsley will be looking to get back into the win column on Tuesday night when his team plays host to the Mets. Billingsley is an impressive 5-1 with a 2.30 ERA on the season, but he's 0-1 with a no-decision in his last two starts (four earned runs in 14 innings). Countering for the Mets will be righthander John Maine, who has allowed three or fewer earned runs in each of his last four starts. Maine is now 3-2 on the season and his ERA is down to 4.24.

Also on the National League schedule for Tuesday: Pittsburgh at Washington, Arizona at Florida, Philadelphia at Cincinnati, Milwaukee at Houston, the Cubs at St. Louis, San Francisco at San Diego, and Colorado at Atlanta. Probable Braves righthanded starter Jair Jurrjens hasn't given up more than three earned runs in any outing this season; he sits at 3-2 with a 2.06 ERA in eight starts on the year.

Over in the American League on Tuesday the top pitching matchup will be in Kansas City, where the Royals' Brian Bannister (3-1, 1.80 ERA) will take on the Indians' Cliff Lee (2-5, 3.00 ERA). Rounding out the slate: Texas at Detroit, Baltimore at the Yankees, Oakland at Tampa Bay, Toronto at Boston, Minnesota at the White Sox, and the Angels at Seattle. Angels starter Matt Palmer is perfect at 4-0 with a 3.38 ERA; he had a complete-game win vs. the BoSox last time out.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

On the ice on Tuesday the Red Wings will be trying to extend their series lead to 2-0 with a second consecutive home win over the Blackhawks in the Western Conference final. Detroit broke open Game 1 on Sunday with three goals in the third period en route to a 5-2 victory. Dan Cleary scored twice for Detroit in that win, while Chris Osgood managed to hold the fort with 30 saves on 32 shots. Blackhawks netminder Nikolai Khabibulin allowed four goals on 42 shots on Sunday.

      Six-pack for Tuesday

Six major league teams that paid out the most bonus money to kids in last June's amateur draft........

      6) Milwaukee Brewers, $8.4M

      5) San Francisco Giants, $9.1M

      4) Pittsburgh Pirates, $9.8M

      3) Tampa Bay Rays, $9.9M

      2) Boston Red Sox, $10.5M

      1) Kansas City Royals, $11.1M

      ----------------------------------------------------------------------

      Late Night Update

Mets appeared to take lead on a Pagan double in 11th inning, but as he turned third base, Church never touched the bag and was called out, ending the inning. Pagan/Beltran then butchered a fly ball in the bottom of the 11th, and new 1B Reed threw away an easy toss to the plate, allowing the winning run to score as LA won, 3-2. Pagan had four hits in his first start of year for New York. Bizarre game.

Tuesday's List of 13: A very big day for common sense.....

      13) Three things that happened Monday made so much sense that it seemed like a cruel joke, but they did indeed happen. First on list is news that baseball playoff games on FOX in October will begin 40 minutes earlier, which allows more kids to watch. Good.

      12) Looks like NFL Network finally has come to an agreement with Comcast, America's biggest cable company, which will allow a great TV station to be shown on basic cable. We still need Time Warner to come to an agreement with NFL Network, but it should happen.

      11) Third but not least, ESPN announced that Jon Gruden will be in the Monday Night Football booth this fall, replacing ill-suited Tony Kornheiser, who seemed to be there only to promote himself. Will be excellent to watch games and just hear football talk. Brilliant!!!!!

      10) Then there's this....imagine being a senior at Wisconsin, finally it is Graduation Day, a huge day in your life. Who does the school pick to give its commencement address? None other than a used car dealer from Milwaukee named Selig, who is also baseball commissioner. By way of review, Arizona State and Notre Dame got Barack Obama; in Wisconsin, they got a used car dealer from Milwaukee.

      9) Wouldn't you have loved to sat in on the meeting where a group of film executives decided to name their movie "Drag Me to Hell"?

      8) Washington Nationals' Christian Guzman walked Monday night, his first walk in his last 166 plate appearances.

      7) Names of thoroughbred horses are limited to 18 letters.

      6) Michael Irvin recently raised $140,000 for Rich Behm, the scout for the Cowboys who was paralyzed when their practice bubble fell in on him during a storm. $40,000 of $$$ came from Irvin's pocket.

      5) Los Angeles Angels have already used 10 starting pitchers in '09.

      4) Giants are 15-0 when they score first, the only team that has yet to lose when they score first- they scored six runs in both Friday and Saturday's games, despite not drawing a walk in either game.

      3) The mayor of Toledo is mowing grass in city parks to save money for a cash-strapped city. Political opponents are calling it a publicity stunt. A politician trying to draw attention to himself??? Nahhhh

      2) Denver's Pepsi Arena is booked for pro wrestling Monday night May 25, but the NBA wants Laker-Nugget game Monday, so Nugget owner Stan Kroenke told ABC there would be a game Monday, and in process ticked off Vincent K. McMahon, who already had sellout for Monday's wrestling card. Since Kroenke owns the arena, not hard to figure out whats going to happen; question is, how much will the WWE get paid to shift its dates? McMahon's favorite color is green, for sure, but it ain't because he's Irish.

      1) Kroenke, by the way, also owns 40% of the St Louis Rams and is lucky enough to have married one of Sam Walton's granddaughters, as in, he married one of the heirs to the Wal-Mart fortune. Smart dude.

        Len’s Top Five

        Tuesday, May 19

        Len's Top 5

Happy Tuesday everyone, here's my Top 5 for May 19, 2009 from len berman sports.

        1. Quick Hits

While you were sleeping, one Met missed third base, so instead of scoring the lead run he was called out. Two other Mets committed errors in the 11th inning as the Dodgers won 3-2. The Mets made 5 errors in all. Somewhere, Casey Stengel is smiling.

The NBA Draft Lottery is tonight. Sacramento has a 25% chance of winning the #1 pick. The Knicks chance is 2.8%.

World Series games will start before 8pm this year, that's 40 minutes earlier. So kids will now only have to stay up til midnight on school nights.

Former Cowboys wide receiver Terrell Owens receives "key to the city" in Buffalo. Players who aren't controversial and just do their jobs get squat.

        2. Inmate Runs the Asylum

You had to love "sheriff" David Wells proclaiming "one and done." He says if you get caught with steroids you should be banned for life. Legal issues aside, Wells should talk? The guy who wrote he was "half-drunk" when he pitched his perfect game? The same guy who lost a couple of teeth when he was punched out at a Manhattan diner? Yeah, I'd let David Wells set the rules, right after Bernie Madoff straightens out the SEC.

        3. Spelling Bee

It wasn't a surprise to Orlando's Dwight Howard that they beat Boston in game 7 Sunday night. When he ate his bowl of Alpha-Bits the day before the game, the first scoop he picked up spelled out D-O-M-I-N-A-T-E. He said it happened two more times. I can't help but think one of those times it might have spelled out B-U-L-L-S-H-I-T.

        4. Snail Mail

Top 5 subscriber Tony reports that he got his renewal bill from the Knicks for season tickets, and this year's season isn't even over. He says they have some nerve. He does allow that they didn't raise prices. Tony, I'm thinking since the Knicks haven't made the playoffs in years, they just figured the season ends in April.

        5. Tit for Tat

OK, we know the NHL isn't a ratings winner on American TV, but how does the NBA fare in Canada? Worse. Last week 1.9 million Canadians tuned in for a hockey playoff game, while 9,000 watched LeBron James and Cleveland beat Atlanta. According to one columnist there are "3am kitchen magician commercials" that have a bigger audience. But I'm guessing there must be fighting in those Canadian infomercials.

Today's Birthday: Boston Celtic Kevin Garnett: 33.
Bonus Birthday: Pete Townsend of The Who. 64.

Today in Sports: The NFL adopts an annual college draft to begin in 1936. Draftniks become orgasmic. 1935.
Bonus Event: Marilyn Monroe performs a sultry rendition of "Happy Birthday" for JFK at Madison Square Garden. Audience becomes orgasmic. 1962.

                NBA playoffs

                Tuesday, May 19

Lakers won three of four vs Denver this year, winning 104-90/116-102 at Staples, but Nuggets are 8-2 in playoffs this spring, 2-2 on road, with losses by a hoop at both New Orleans, Dallas. Lakers had tougher series in last round, though Houston never really challenged them on road, but still, Denver has edge here in terms of rest. Adding some drama to series is fact that Colorado is where Kobe Bryant had his legal problems.

                Wednesday, May 20

Cavaliers are 8-0 in playoffs, with a 10-point win closest game they've had so far; home team won all three of their games with Orlando this yr, with Magic losing here 97-93 March 17, but winning last meeting by 29 down in Florida. Cleveland was practicing, resting while Orlando won its tough 7-game series vs Boston; Cavaliers are 43-2 at home this season. Magic are 4-3 on the road in playoffs this spring.

Denver Nuggets at Los Angeles Lakers [ESPN | 9:05 PM ET]

Nuggets: Denver has been off since Wednesday. "We're playing at a very good level, a very efficient offensive level," coach George Karl said. "Defensively, we have not been special. Against New Orleans we were pretty good. The Dallas series turned into an offensive game. I don't think we can win an offensive game against the Lakers. We have to win at least two games with our defense." The Nuggets have gone 1-10 against L.A. the last two seasons, including a four-game sweep in the first round of last year's playoffs. Karl hasn't won at Staples Center since taking over as Denver's coach midway through the 2004-05 season.

The Nuggets are 3-13 ATS in the last 16 meetings in Los Angeles.
The Under is 17-5 in the Nuggets' last 22 playoff games as an underdog.

                    Key Injuries - NONE

                    PROJECTED SCORE: 101

Lakers (-6.5, O/U 215): The Lakers advanced after an erratic, baffling semifinal series against the Rockets and will be trying to get back to the NBA finals for the second straight year. Said Pau Gasol: "I think what we went through with Houston made us grow as a team. Hopefully we'll show that." "Honestly, when we played them in Denver, the second-to-last time we played them, I told Melo, 'I'll see you in the Western Conference finals,' because I just felt like they had all the pieces there," Kobe Bryant said. "They had the depth, the toughness. They had the camaraderie. It's no surprise to me that they're here." Los Angeles won the season series 3-1.

The Lakers are 10-2 ATS in the last 12 meetings.
The Lakers are 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games following a SU win.

                    Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 108 (UNDER - Total Play of the Day)

Denver Nuggets at Los Angeles Lakers (-6.5, 215)

The Los Angeles Lakers stepped off one thrill ride and, after little time to catch their breath, have to jump on another.

No big deal, Kobe Bryant said Monday, the only day the top-seeded Lakers had to prepare for the Western Conference finals against Chauncey Billups, Carmelo Anthony and the rest of the second-seeded Denver Nuggets.

"You just get after it. We're pretty familiar with this team," Bryant said.

Game 1 is Tuesday night at Staples Center. The Lakers will be trying to get back to the NBA finals for the second straight year while the Nuggets will be trying to get there for the first time.

"Honestly, when we played them in Denver, the second-to-last time we played them, I told Melo, 'I'll see you in the Western Conference finals,' because I just felt like they had all the pieces there," Bryant said. "They had the depth, the toughness. They had the camaraderie. It's no surprise to me that they're here."

The Lakers advanced after an erratic, baffling semifinal series against the Houston Rockets. After being pushed to Game 7, the Lakers responded with an 89-70 win on Sunday, getting a brilliant performance on both ends of the court by Pau Gasol, who had 21 points and 18 rebounds.

The Nuggets have been chilling since Wednesday night, when they eliminated the Dallas Mavericks and advanced to the conference finals for the first time since 1985.

"They are going to come in with a lot of confidence and be ready to play," Bryant said. "They're going to come out on our home court and put on a show. We've got to be ready."

The Nuggets are ready, having eliminated New Orleans and Dallas, each in five games. They just hope the rest doesn't lead to rust.

"We're very confident," Anthony said. "Not cocky, but confident. In the back of our minds we know what we did to get to this point."

While the Lakers are Hollywood, the Nuggets are talented and entertaining in their own right, with Billups, Anthony, Nene, Kenyon Martin, Dahntay Jones and Chris "Birdman" Andersen.

The Nuggets say they'll have to step it up defensively, which the Lakers did in eliminating the Rockets on Sunday.

"We're playing at a very good level, a very efficient offensive level," coach George Karl said. "Defensively, we have not been special. Against New Orleans we were pretty good. The Dallas series turned into an offensive game. I don't think we can win an offensive game against the Lakers. We have to win at least two games with our defense."

Martin, who along with Nene will be matched up against Gasol, agreed.

"They have great offensive talent, so we are going to bring our best defensive game we are capable of playing," Martin said. "I think we proved during the playoffs we can stand up if we put our heads into it. It's just a matter of us going out and doing it."

The Nuggets have gone 1-10 against L.A. the last two seasons, including a four-game sweep in the first round of last year's playoffs, when Denver became the first 50-win team in league history to get swept in the first round. Karl hasn't won at Staples Center since taking over as Denver's coach midway through the 2004-05 season.

"Well, I think you can pull some things from that," Billups said. "But like I said, we're just a totally different basketball team right now, so none of that stuff really matters. It's playoff basketball. It's a different intensity, it's a different focus. Everything is different. "

Los Angeles won the season series 3-1.

"Their personnel is obviously challenging," Gasol said. "We have a really good team and we are feeling really good right now after yesterday's win. We're ready to step up and continue this right path we're building."

The Lakers were wildly inconsistent against the Rockets, looking all-world one game, then getting railroaded the next. Bryant said they decided at halftime of Game 6 - which they ended up losing by 15 points - to turn up their defense a notch, something they think they can carry into this series.

Asked if the Lakers deserved the beating they took from the media for their split personality, Bryant laughed.

"I mean, I always find that stuff entertaining to read," he said. "We as a ballclub, we know what we have to do. I'm definitely more upset than anything anybody could write about. We're harder on ourselves than anything anybody can write."

Said Gasol: "I think what we went through with Houston made us grow as a team. Hopefully we'll show that."

Bryant and Anthony became friends last summer when they were teammates on the U.S. Olympic team, which won the gold medal in Beijing.

"He's like a brother to me," Bryant said. "Truly, I love him. We spent a lot of time together last summer. He was the one I was the most close with on the team."

Said Anthony: "That's my man. That's my guy, but I don't know him this week."

                      Pick: Lakers
