    Daily Sports Roundup

    Friday, May 15

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Giants play host to the Mets, the Cardinals get a visit from the Brewers, and the Royals send their ace to the hill.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

Tim Lincecum (3-1, 3.25 ERA) will be looking for his sixth straight quality start on Friday when his Giants play host to the Mets. Righthander Lincecum had to settle for a no-decision against the Dodgers last time out, allowing just three earned runs on six hits over six innings of work; he had previously won three straight starts. The Mets will go with veteran Livan Hernandez (3-1, 5.08 ERA) on Friday night. Righthander Hernandez has won each of his past two outings for New York, allowing just three earned runs on 14 hits over those 12 1-3 innings pitched.

Elsewhere on the NL schedule for Friday it'll be Houston at the Cubs, Colorado at Pittsburgh, Philadelphia at Washington, the Dodgers at Florida, Arizona at Atlanta, Cincinnati at San Diego, and Milwaukee at St. Louis. The Brewers will use Yovani Gallardo (4-1, 3.09 ERA) against their division rival on Friday; the righthander hasn't lost since April 13. The Cards will counter with righthander Kyle Lohse (3-2, 4.25 ERA), who has given up 13 runs in his last 10 1-3 innings.

Over in the Junior Circuit on Friday the Royals will send red-hot ace Zack Greinke (6-1, 0.51 ERA) to the mound in their home game against the Orioles. Greinke tasted defeat for the first time this season last time out, but he only surrendered one earned run on four hits (and no walks) over eight innings versus the Angels. The Orioles are slated to start righthander Adam Eaton (2-3, 7.18 ERA) in Friday night's contest. Eaton beat the Yankees in his start last Saturday.

The full slate of AL action on Friday also includes Oakland at Detroit, the White Sox at Toronto, Cleveland at Tampa Bay, the Angels at Texas, Boston at Seattle, and Minnesota at the Yankees. New York will be hoping Phil Hughes (1-2, 8.49 ERA) can get back on track for the Friday outing; the righthander was pounded for eight earned runs in 1 2-3 innings by the Orioles last time out. The Twins will send Francisco Liriano (2-4, 5.75 ERA) to the mound to take on the Yankees. The lefthander has won his last two starts, due in large part to 16 runs of support.

      Six-pack for Friday

-- Shorthanded Mets (no Reyes-Delgado-Putz) scored three runs in ninth to beat Giants 7-4, after Giants had tied game 4-4 in 8th.

-- Royals slipped out of first place in AL Central after losing sixth game in row, this one at home to the Orioles, 9-5.

-- Russell Martin's 10th-inning double gave Dodgers a 5-3 win over Philly Thursday, as they stretch their NL West lead to five games.

-- Padres' Gaudin allowed only one hit in 4.1 IP at Wrigley, but he walked seven as Cubs handed San Diego its 11th road loss in row.

-- Wandy Rodriguez struck out 11 as Houston won at Coors Field. Rodriguez might be the most improved pitcher in big leagues.

-- Somehow Rockets are 2-1 against Lakers without Yao Ming, so series goes back to Staples for Game 7-- LA won Game 5 there by 40 points, so not like anyone thinks Houston has shot, but still...

      ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Friday's List of 13: Our baseball List of 13........

      13) Bronx-- Getting very little from #3-4 spots in batting order. .

      12) Phillies-- Not real fond of the world champs' starting pitching.

      11) Giants-- None of their fast guys hit the ball real well, but they have serious starting pitching, and thats very important. .

      10) Angels-- Santana came back Thursday, Lackey returns Saturday and all of a sudden this team starts looking a lot stronger.

      9) Reds-- They're good on the road because they've got good pitching away from Great American Bandbox. Votto's dizzy spells a concern.

      8) Brewers-- Macha deserves lot of credit for having this team in the race after they lost Sabathia, Sheets from last year's contenders.

      7) Rangers-- When teams like this start to get lot of walk-off wins, they begin to believe, and confidence is a powerful ally to have.

      6) Cardinals-- Losing two of three in Pittsburgh wasn't impressive.

      5) Mets-- Showed lot of guts winning while shorthanded Thursday in San Francisco, but they'll need a healthy, productive Reyes.

      4) Blue Jays-- Still have 51 games left vs Bronx-Boston-Tampa.

      3) Cubs-- Getting Lee back; they're in baseball's toughest division.

      2) Red Sox-- They have two of the best three starting pitchers in the International League, as their farm system supplements big club a lot better than their competitors' farm systems are.

      1) Dodgers-- 3-4 without Ramirez, with pair of extra-inning losses. In long run, could Manny's suspension make this team stronger?

        Len’s Top Five

        Friday, May 15

        Len's Top 5

TGIF everyone, here's my Top 5 for May 15, 2009 from len berman sports.

        1. Quick Hits

Celtics and Lakers both forced to a game 7 by Orlando and Houston.
Carolina ousts Boston 3-2 in overtime in game 7. Detroit polishes off Anaheim.
The 134th Preakness will be run tomorrow at Pimlico in Maryland. For the first time you can't bring booze into the infield. Now ya gotta buy it there.
You go to an NYU graduation at the new Yankee Stadium, and a Yankee game breaks out. Grads weren't good enough to sit in the "luxury seats" so those seats sat empty, as usual. (Thanks to subscriber Maia for the tip.)

        2. I've Got your Horse Right Here

Looking for a rooting interest in tomorrow's Preakness? How about Luv Guv, a 50-1 shot. He's named after Elliot Spitzer's hooker affair. Then again if your mind is in the gutter (like mine) you can bet on Mine That Bird, Tone it Down, or Flying Private and be equally satisfied. Of course none of those horse names holds a candle to Spanning the World's favorite filly, Bodacious Tatas. The odds were always stacked against her.

        3. Rule Book

In a Minnesota junior college tournament softball game last week, a player hit a walk-off homer and she high-fived her teammates before she got to home plate. Uh oh. The opposing coach whipped out her rulebook and said that's a no no. The home run got disallowed, and the animated team wound up losing. Premature exhilaration is a bummer.

        4. Friday Mailbag

From my friend and Red Sox nut Jeffrey Lyons on the passing of Dom DiMaggio. "One day, Marilyn Monroe was sweeping leaves in front of her garage, and was wearing short shorts. Dom pulled up and Joe noticed his kid brother staring at her. 'And she can cook, too,' he said to Dom."

There was no shortage of comments on Manny Ramirez's suspension for taking female fertility drugs. At first the "drug" was said to be for a "personal problem."

D.P wrote: :"Given the 'personal problem' Manny said his medication was for, it gives a whole new meaning to "Mannywood."

M.M. wrote: "Manny was just re-instated. He's having twins at the end of November."
Editor's Note: You get email of the week, M.M.

And B.L. writes: "Congratulations to Dave Bing on becoming Mayor of Detroit. After that term is up he might take a run at becoming Captain of the Titanic."
Editor's Note: Is that a swipe at the Titanic, or the city of Detroit?

        5. Genius of the Week

A Welsh man called the complaint line at a local supermarket to bitch about the pizza he had bought. He complained that he was sold just the pizza base without toppings. Halfway into the phone call he realized he had opened the box upside down. He then complained that the pizza box should have come with instructions.

Today's Birthday: The pitcher that George Steinbrenner famously called "a fat toad," Hideki Irabu. 40.
Bonus Birthday: Actor Chazz Palminteri. 57.

Today in Sports: The Montreal Expos retire their first number. Le Grand Orange, Rusty Staub's # 10. 1993.
Mickey Mouse made his 1st appearance 1928.

Cardinals (-110, O/U 8.5): The Cardinals are looking to build on Thursday's 5-1 win at Pittsburgh that helped avoid a sweep to the last-place Pirates and keep pace with Milwaukee at the top of the NL Central. Los Angeles Angels at Texas Rangers [8:05 PM ET]

Angels: The Angels have won nine of 11 to recover from a difficult start. Opponents have averaged just 3.5 runs during this stretch. Joe Saunders won his third straight start with a five-hitter as the Angels beat Zack Greinke and the Royals 1-0 on Saturday night. The left-hander walked one and threw just 101 pitches. Opponents are hitting .237 against Saunders. Saunders has lost all three career starts at Arlington, compiling a 9.77 ERA, although he threw a complete game in a 3-2 loss in his most recent start there July 8. Los Angeles was 7-2 at hitter-friendly Rangers Ballpark last year.

The Angels are 14-2 in Saunders' last 16 starts as an underdog.
The Under is 6-1 in the Angels' last 7 overall.

Key Injuries - DH Vladimir Guerrero (pectoral) is on the 15-day DL.

Texas is 11-6 at home this season. The Rangers rank in the top five in the majors with 191 runs scored. Kevin Millwood (3-3, 2.92 ERA) is among the AL leaders in innings, having gone at least seven in all seven of his starts. Millwood has a 3.82 ERA in 11 career starts against the Angels, due in part to his dominance of Los Angeles leadoff hitter Chone Figgins, who is 3 for 29 (.103) versus the right-hander.

The Under is 7-0-1 in Millwood's last 8 home starts.

Hot lines: Today’s best MLB bets
                      -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Minnesota Twins at New York Yankees (-123, 10)

Yankees fans had their pinstripe panties all in a bunch when young right-hander Philip Hughes shutdown the Detroit Tigers for six innings in late April. But since that encouraging performance, Hughes has showed why he started the year in the minors and isn’t at the big-league level yet.

In his last two starts, he’s given up 11 earned runs in just under six innings of work. Hughes was recently tagged for eight runs in a loss to the Baltimore Orioles, allowing eight hits and three walks in the shortest start of his still blossoming career.

"That was my fault," Hughes told the New York Daily News. "I tried to limit the damage as much as I could, but I wasn't executing pitches. I let it get out of control real fast."

Hughes is struggling with his command, totaling 246 pitches thrown in his 11 2/3 innings this season. He has a strikeout-to-walk count of 8-to-8 and has already served up two home runs in his limited appearances.

                      Pick: Over

New York Mets at San Francisco Giants (-166, 8)

With the economy in the crapper, people have to change the way they shop, eat, travel and even bet.

Gamblers on the hunt for discount wagers need to look no further than the City by the Bay. With the New York Mets and their public following visiting AT&T Park, Giants ace Tim Lincecum is being offered at a price no one can refuse.

Usually toting a spicy price tag, the reigning NL Cy Young winner has given up just nine earned run in his last five outings which span 36 innings. Lincecum is third in the National League with 58 strikeouts and has walked only 13 batters this season.

Adding to the right-handed fireballer’s value is the sudden jolt from San Francisco’s bats. The Giants have ranked near the bottom of the majors in run production over the past few years, but have put up 30 total runs in the past four games.

Lincecum is undefeated in May, going 6-0 in 12 career starts in the second month of the schedule. He has a 0-1 record with a 4.85 ERA in two career starts against the Mets.

                      Pick: San Francisco -166

                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                        Streaking

                        Zack Greinke (Kansas City Royals)

Though he suffered his first loss of the season his last time out, Zack Greinke was just as dominant as he's been all year.

Mired in a season-high six-game slide, the Kansas City Royals turn to their ace Friday night when they continue a four-game series with the Baltimore Orioles.

On Saturday, Greinke (6-1, 0.51 ERA) had his nine-game winning streak snapped as he lost for the first time since Sept. 7. The majors' ERA leader gave up one run and four hits over eight innings of 1-0 loss against the Los Angeles Angels.

"(My stuff) was all right - I can't complain but not good enough," said Greinke, who had three-ball counts on six of the first seven batters. "It was a tough game. A loss is a loss. It might be a little tougher, but the end result is the same thing."

Greinke has given up only three earned runs over 53 innings this season. Despite the defeat, he still pitched his fourth complete game, struck out five and didn't walk a batter for the second straight contest. The only run came on a sacrifice fly.

"From a pitching coach's standpoint, I thought that was his best game because he didn't have that electric stuff and he just pitched a heckuva game," pitching coach Bob McClure told Major League Baseball's official Web site.

Greinke looks to remain undefeated at home and enjoy some unprecedented success against Baltimore (15-20). The right-hander is 4-0 with a 0.60 ERA in four starts at Kauffman Stadium, but 0-2 with a 10.13 ERA in three starts and two relief appearances against the Orioles.

                        Yovani Gallardo (Milwaukee Brewers)

The Milwaukee Brewers are one of the hottest teams in baseball, and they hope to keep it that way by sending their ace out to begin a nine-game road trip.

Yovani Gallardo looks win a fourth consecutive decision Friday night, when the Brewers face the St. Louis Cardinals in the opener of a three-game series between NL Central co-leaders.

Gallardo (4-1, 3.09 ERA) has put together his own streak. He's won three consecutive decisions while posting a 1.80 ERA with 38 strikeouts in 35 innings over five starts as Milwaukee has gone 4-1. He won a career-best four consecutive games from Aug. 31-Sept. 17, 2007.

The right-hander, however, labored through five innings on Saturday, allowing two runs and five hits with eight strikeouts and four walks in a 12-6 win over the Chicago Cubs.

"It was a long game, I'll tell you that, but we came out on top, so it was worth it," said Gallardo, who leads the team in wins and has the lowest ERA of any member of the rotation.

Gallardo is 0-1 with a 9.28 ERA in two career starts against the Cardinals (21-14), but he hasn't faced them since losing on Aug. 15, 2007.

                        Slumping

                        Kyle Lohse (St. Louis Cardinals)

St. Louis will turn to Kyle Lohse (3-2, 4.25) in the hopes he can avoid a third consecutive loss and rediscover his early-season form.

The right-hander is 0-2 with an 11.32 ERA and has served up three homers in his last two games. That came after going 3-0 with a 1.97 ERA and one homer allowed in five April starts.

Lohse was solid on Saturday, allowing two runs and three hits in five innings before getting tagged for five runs and six hits in the sixth en route to an 8-3 loss at Cincinnati.

"It just kind of got away there," Lohse said. "I thought I was rolling there for a while, and they put together quite an inning."

Lohse is 3-3 with a 5.22 ERA in 11 games - 10 starts - against the Brewers. He had no record and a 4.26 ERA in three starts against Milwaukee last year, all St. Louis losses

                        Philip Hughes (New York Yankees)

Woeful pitching has been a big factor in that poor play at the new Yankee Stadium, where New York has a 6.59 ERA and has allowed 24 home runs. The hitter-friendly park has yielded 47 homers overall.

That could be a problem for struggling Yankees right-hander Phil Hughes (1-2, 8.49 ERA), who lasted just 1 2-3 innings and surrendered eight runs in his most recent outing, a 12-5 loss at Baltimore on Saturday. His third start of the season was the shortest of his career.

This will be Hughes' first appearance against Minnesota.

                          STARS

                          Thursday

-Chris Davis, Rangers, hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift Texas to a 3-2 win over Seattle.

-Joe Crede, Twins, capped another Minnesota comeback with a two-out, two-run single in a six-run seventh inning that ruined Justin Verlander's strong start and helped Minnesota finish a three-game sweep with a 6-5 victory over Detroit.

-Victor Martinez, Indians, had four hits and drove in four runs, raising his batting average to .400 and helping Cleveland beat Tampa Bay 11-7.

-David Wright, Mets, had three hits, drove in two runs and had four of New York's team-record seven stolen bases in a 7-4 victory at San Francisco.

-Bobby Scales, Cubs, drove in four runs with two doubles in Chicago's 11-3 win over San Diego. The 31-year-old rookie, who made his big league debut last week after 11 years in the minors, has at least one hit in each of his six games and is batting .444.

                          SCORING CHANGE

Major League Baseball has overturned a scoring decision from last Friday's game between the Angels and Royals, ruling Los Angeles' Howie Kendrick reached on an error instead of an inside-the-park homer. Kendrick was initially given the homer after Kansas City right fielder Jose Guillen misplayed a ball down the line. The Royals appealed the decision by official scorer Mel Franks, and a five-person appeals board voted unanimously to changed the ruling, taking away Kendrick's homer and giving Guillen a four-base error. Franks then approved the change.

                          SAYING SORRY

Umpire Paul Schrieber promptly issued an apology for placing his hand on Detroit slugger Magglio Ordonez's back and steering him toward the dugout during a heated confrontation the previous night. It took even less time for Ordonez and Tigers manager Jim Leyland to accept it.

                          STRUGGLING SLUGGER

Boston slugger David Ortiz went 0 for 7 and stranded 12 runners in the Red Sox's 5-4 loss to Los Angeles in 12 innings. He struck out three times, once with the bases loaded in the fourth, and left the bases loaded again in the 12th with a dribbler in front of the plate as his average plummeted to .208.

                          STEALING HOME

Houston speedster Michael Bourne became the latest major leaguer to steal home in the Astros' 5-3 win over Colorado. He joined Boston's Jacoby Ellsbury and Philadelphia's Jayson Werth as players who have stolen home this season - although those two pulled off straight steals. Bourne swiped home on a double steal.

                          SLUMPING FATHERS

Adrian Gonzalez homered for the fourth consecutive game but couldn't prevent San Diego from losing its 11th straight on the road, its longest skid in 38 years. Since starting the season 10-6, the Padres are 3-16.

                          HOME AWAY FROM HOME

Baltimore has won 15 of 18 against Kansas City and is 43-15 against the Royals since 2001, including 24-7 at Kauffman Stadium.

                          SWIPING BASES

The New York Mets set a franchise record with seven steals in their 7-4 win over the San Francisco Giants. David Wright matched the team record with four steals. New York became the fourth team to record as many steals against the Giants since they moved to San Francisco in 1958.

                          SPEAKING

"All the guys have been telling me about our new home. For me it's like opening day all over again.'' - Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez, who will get to play at the new Yankee Stadium for the first time on Friday. He had been on the disabled list until last Friday when the Yankees started their current road trip.
