Pittsburgh Penguins at Washington Capitals (-145, 5.5)

When the Washington Capitals host the Pittsburgh Penguins to finish their taut, thrilling Eastern Conference semifinal Wednesday night, Alex Ovechkin's third career Game 7 in the NHL playoffs will mark Sidney Crosby's debut in such a setting.

That's right: For all of his talent and success, Sid the Kid is still relatively, well, a kid.

"I've watched a lot of Game 7s, but this will be my first one," the 21-year-old Crosby said. "I've never played one in juniors - or any level."

So he and 22-year-old teammate Kris Letang asked the, ahem, more-experienced Bill Guerin for some words of advice Tuesday while skipping the optional skate at the Penguins' practice facility.

"Somebody," Crosby observed, "is going home."

Which sort of feels like a bit of a shame, given what these teams have delivered so far in a series that features the past two NHL MVPs (Ovechkin and Crosby), two of this year's MVP finalists (Ovechkin and Pittsburgh's Evgeni Malkin), and the past two league points leaders (Malkin and Ovechkin).

"Tomorrow," Ovechkin said, wearing gray sweats and flip-flops after sitting out Washington's optional practice, "is going to be pretty sick."

Consider:

- Five games were won by a single goal, and the other was decided by only two goals;

- Three games went to overtime, including Washington's 5-4 victory at Pittsburgh in Game 6 on Monday night;

- Both teams led in each game, and five times the team that scored first lost. Both teams have held a series lead, with Washington up 2-0, then Pittsburgh up 3-2. And the teams have been tied or separated by one goal 92 percent of the time.

"It's lived up to the hype of the 'Super Series,"' Capitals forward Brooks Laich said, "and I think it's great for hockey, in general."

There are particular moments that stand out, from rookie goalie Simeon Varlamov's out-of-nowhere save on Crosby in Game 1, to the hat tricks delivered by Ovechkin and Crosby in Game 2, to the OT victories for the Penguins in Games 3 and 5 when a puck went in the goal off a Capitals defenseman.

"The star power is there, and they haven't underperformed," Washington coach Bruce Boudreau said. "It's not like you're playing in the Super Bowl, and you've got the best running back in the league going seven carries for 12 yards. There's no disappointment here."

Certainly not.

Ovechkin has 13 points (seven goals, six assists), better than two per game - and more than anyone in the NHL has produced in any playoff series since 2003.

Crosby, meanwhile, has 10 points, and Malkin eight.

It might have been instructive for Crosby to hear what the Capitals had to say Tuesday about what they remember of their recent Game 7 experiences.

In the first round this season, they won a Game 7, coming back from a 3-1 series deficit to eliminate the New York Rangers. But in the first round a year ago, Ovechkin's first trip to the postseason, the Capitals lost a Game 7 at home in overtime to the Philadelphia Flyers.

Asked how he felt when that game ended, Ovechkin said: "Terrible, actually. But I don't want to think about losing."

Laich was more willing to share his memories in detail.

"It honestly felt like someone had just ripped my heart out," he said. "It was the worst feeling. I don't wish it upon anyone. Your season crashes, and it's all over. That's why you fight so hard to avoid it."

Detroit Tigers at Minnesota Twins (-160, 10)

Dontrelle Willis' first season with the Detroit Tigers was extremely forgettable, but he is trying to put a lot more than a disappointing record behind him as he makes his first start of 2009.

After being sidelined with an anxiety disorder, Willis takes the mound for the Tigers on Wednesday when they continue a three-game series with the Minnesota Twins at the Metrodome.

Willis went 0-2 with a 9.38 ERA in seven starts and one relief appearance in 2008, his first season with Detroit (17-14) after being signed to a $29 million, three-year deal in December 2007. His first year in the AL was marred by a stint on the disabled list because of a knee injury suffered during his second start, and it was shortened further after he was sent to the minors after struggling with his command.

Looking to put 2008 behind him, Willis received further bad news when he was diagnosed with an anxiety disorder during spring training and then placed on the 15-day disabled list. Now he's ready to show he's regained the form that made him the 2003 NL rookie of the year and runner-up to the 2005 NL Cy Young Award.

"I feel great," he said. "They talked to me about going out there and trying to have fun. ... Now my mind-set is simplified to go out there and think about myself and not really caring about anybody else as far as what they think."

The 27-year-old left-hander made four rehab starts in preparing for this outing, compiling a 3.85 ERA over 25 2-3 innings at three different levels.Willis made a one-inning relief appearance against the Twins (16-17) last season.

"He's been through a lot. He's going to come back now so we're certainly happy about that, and that's something that's in your heart as a human being," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "The other side of the coin is he needs to win games for us and that's what he'll be here for. He'll be expected to pitch well and help us win games like everybody else."

The Twins hand the ball to Glen Perkins (1-2, 3.73 ERA), who after allowing three runs in his first three outings this season, has a 6.88 ERA in going winless his last three starts.

Perkins pitched six innings against Baltimore on Thursday, allowing four runs and five hits in a 5-4 loss. The left-hander, who gave up two home runs in the first three innings, did not factor in the decision.

Perkins is 2-1 with a 2.73 ERA in four starts against the Tigers. He's also made three relief appearances against them. Miguel Cabrera, who was 0 for 4 on Tuesday, has four hits in 10 at-bats against Perkins.

Boston Red Sox at Los Angeles Angels (+100, 9)

Kevin Youkilis can't help and Dustin Pedroia is banged-up, but the Boston Red Sox will need somebody to step up at the plate with the potential of another poor Tim Wakefield start looming against the Los Angeles Angels.

Youkilis is now on the disabled list, but Pedroia may return for the Red Sox after a one-game absence as Wakefield tries to avoid losing his sixth straight road game against the Angels on Wednesday night in the middle game of this series.

Youkilis, who has missed six games due to a strained oblique muscle on his left side, was placed on the 15-day DL on Tuesday after testing the injury prior to Boston's 4-3 win over Los Angeles (16-15). The first baseman is batting .393 with six home runs, 20 RBIs and a major league-best .505 on-base percentage.

"When it originally came out and we said day to day, I think we all really believed it," Red Sox manager Terry Francona told the team's official Web site. "It's been more of a week-to-week thing, so we'll see."

The Red Sox (21-12) struggled at the plate early Tuesday, scoring one run through seven innings as they played without Pedroia. The reigning American League MVP sat out due to a strained groin, but Francona said it was only a precaution and he'll likely be back in the lineup Wednesday.

Wakefield (4-1, 2.93 ERA) will probably need the help. He's lost five straight road starts against the Angels, posting an 8.53 ERA during that span. He pitched at Angel Stadium on April 10, yielding three runs and six hits while walking a season-high five in six innings of a 6-3 loss.

Wakefield is 9-13 with a 4.79 ERA in 24 starts and five relief appearances all-time against Los Angeles.

The veteran right-hander, though, has given up three runs or fewer in five of his six starts this season. Wakefield allowed two runs and four hits in six innings as Boston beat Cleveland 13-3 on Thursday night.

"I feel very confident. I've been getting deep into games," Wakefield said. "That's my job here as the fourth or fifth starter."

The Angels will counter with Matt Palmer (3-0, 3.06), who has conceded one run in each of his last two outings. The 30-year-old rookie right-hander allowed just two hits while striking out five in 5 1-3 innings as Los Angeles beat Kansas City 4-1 on Friday night.

Four Angels relievers combined to give up three runs in two innings following a strong start from Jered Weaver. Los Angeles' bullpen has been scored on in 20 of 29 appearances with five blown saves and a major league-worst 6.90 ERA, walking 49 in 90 innings.

Streaking

Barry Zito, San Francisco Giants

Zito (1-2, 3.57 ERA) is 1-0 with a 1.37 ERA in his last four starts despite getting only six total runs of support.

That strong stretch from the left-hander has given San Francisco some hope that he can rediscover the form that helped him win the 2002 AL Cy Young Award with Oakland, eventually leading to his seven-year, $126-million contract from the Giants during December 2006.

Zito struggled in his first two seasons since moving across the bay, going 21-30 with a 4.83 ERA in 66 games and was briefly moved to the bullpen last year. He started 2009 in similar fashion, losing his first two starts while giving up 10 runs and 11 hits in nine innings, but has since helped the Giants to wins in each of his last four outings.

He got his first win of the season Friday, allowing one run and eight hits with five strikeouts in six innings to beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-1.

"I'm more focused than I've been in a handful of years," Zito told the Giants' official Web site. "I knew that I could still be productive as a pitcher in this game. The last couple of months of each of the past two seasons I've shown that, but this year I wanted to do it from the beginning and not dig myself a hole."

Brian Bannister, Kansas City Royals

The last time the Kansas City Royals won a game, Brian Bannister had a big hand in the outcome.

Looking to continue his strong start, the right-hander tries to help the Royals end their season-high four-game losing streak Wednesday night in the finale of a two-game road series with the Oakland Athletics.

Another member of Kansas City's talented rotation, Bannister (3-0, 1.48 ERA) allowed five hits and struck out seven in six scoreless innings of a 3-1 victory over Seattle on Thursday.

"I would put that right up there with one of the top three starts that we've seen this season," Royals manager Trey Hillman said.

Bannister, who is 3-0 for the second straight year despite beginning this season at Triple-A Omaha, is 1-1 with a 3.38 ERA in five starts against Oakland.


Slumping

Jamie Moyer, Philadelphia Phillies

Philadelphia's Jamie Moyer (3-2, 7.26) has yet to find the form that made him a surprise 16-game winner last year.

The 46-year-old has been reached for at least four runs in five of his six starts, and the left-hander is coming of his worst outing - getting tagged for seven runs and seven hits including three homers in 2 1-3 innings of a 7-5 defeat Thursday to the New York Mets.

"I didn't like the way I threw tonight," Moyer said. "I'll probably go back and look at something from two or three years ago. Something positive."

Giving up the long ball has been a problem for Moyer, who's allowed 10 in just 31 innings. In helping the Phillies win the World Series last year, he gave up 20 in 196 1-3 innings.

Moyer is 3-5 with a 5.19 ERA in 11 lifetime starts against the Dodgers, whom he has not faced since 2007. In that outing, he was ripped for 10 runs in 5 1-3 innings of a 10-3 defeat.

Ryan Zimmerman extended his hitting streak to 30 games, getting a first-inning single in the Nationals' 9-7 loss to the Giants. Zimmerman matched George Brett's 30-game streak in 1980 for the longest by a third baseman since Pete Rose's 44-game streak in 1978, although Rose played two games in left field during his famed streak. It is the fourth-longest in the majors since 2000, matching 30-game streaks by Moises Alou (2007), Willy Taveras (2006) and Albert Pujols (2003).

SHOCKED PAPI

David Ortiz said he was "shocked'' when he learned about former teammate Manny Ramirez's 50-game suspension for failing a drug test. Ortiz said he was too busy to think about the suspension when it was imposed last week because he is trying to figure out how to end his season-opening home run drought. He also doesn't plan to reach out to the Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder, who played in Boston from 2003-08, winning the World Series in 2004 and 2007.

FINED

White Sox closer Bobby Jenks was fined by Major League Baseball for throwing a pitch behind Texas' Ian Kinsler last weekend. Jenks sailed a fastball behind Kinsler on Saturday and later said the pitch was intentional because he was tired of watching White Sox batters getting hit with no retaliation.

STOP THAT THIEF!

Jayson Werth stole home for Philadelphia in the seventh inning of a 5-3 win against Los Angeles on Tuesday night and tied a team record with four steals in one game. Werth surprised the Dodgers when he took off on a slow toss from catcher Russell Martin to reliever Ronald Belisario. His run gave the Phillies a 5-2 lead and the crowd gave him a standing ovation. He hit a one-out single in the eighth, then stole second and third. He also stole third base in the fourth inning. Werth's four steals in a game ties a club record set by Sherry Magee on July 12 and Aug. 31 in 1906.

HE'S BACK!

Rangers center fielder Josh Hamilton homered after being activated from the disabled list Tuesday night for the opener of a six-game homestand against AL West foes Seattle and Los Angeles. Hamilton had been on the 15-day disabled list because of strained left ribcage muscle. The All-Star last played April 26, five days after he got hurt running into the outfield wall in Toronto. Infielder Joaquin Arias was sent back to Triple-A Oklahoma. ... Twins third baseman Joe Crede returned to the lineup after missing three games with a sore left hamstring and hit a two-run homer in a 6-2 win over Detroit. ... Pirates shortstop Jack Wilson was activated off the 15-day disabled list and in the lineup for Pittsburgh's 7-1 win over St. Louis. Wilson had been out since April 25 with a sprained left middle finger. ... Astros first baseman Lance Berkman returned to the starting lineup after missing three games because of a sore left wrist.

SIDELINED

The Red Sox placed first baseman Kevin Youkilis on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday, retroactive to May 5, because of a strained oblique muscle on his left side. Youkilis is batting .393 with six home runs, 20 RBIs and a major league-best .505 on-base percentage. He sat out six games with the injury before the club decided to make the move. Infielder Gil Velazquez was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket. ... The Diamondbacks placed slumping outfielder Conor Jackson on the 15-day disabled list with a "general illness.'' Jackson has had a prolonged fever and cough, and the club plans to put him through a battery of tests, manager A.J. Hinch said. ... Washington's Lastings Milledge will be out six to eight weeks following surgery on his broken right ring finger, the latest setback for the Nationals' former starting center fielder. Milledge was injured Monday while trying to bunt in a game with Triple-A Syracuse, where he was sent after seven games with Washington this season.

SITTING OUT

Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter was scratched from the lineup before New York's 5-1 loss at Toronto on Tuesday night with a sore right oblique and was listed as day to day. Manager Joe Girardi was hopeful Jeter would be able to play Wednesday night against the Blue Jays. ... White Sox outfielder Carlos Quentin missed Chicago's 7-4 victory over Cleveland because of a heel problem that is expected to keep him out of the starting lineup for two games. ... Rangers closer Frank Francisco has biceps tendinitis and will not be available for at least a couple of days. Texas GM Jon Daniels said Francisco, who is tied for the major league lead with nine saves, could miss the entire three-game series against Seattle.

SIGNED

The Milwaukee Brewers signed utilityman Frank Catalanotto to a minor league contract. Catalanotto will report to the Brewers' spring training facility in Arizona on Wednesday and spend about a week there before being assigned to a minor league team. The 35-year-old Catalanotto has played first, second and third base and left and right field and has been a designated hitter in his 12-year career with Detroit, Texas and Toronto. He was most recently released by the Rangers at the end of spring training in favor of Andruw Jones.

SURGERY

Florida Marlins reliever Scott Proctor is expected to be out for a year after having reconstructive surgery on his right elbow. Proctor had Tommy John surgery on Tuesday after consulting with specialist Dr. James Andrews before the operation. Proctor had surgery in October to repair a partially torn flexor tendon and his return was repeatedly delayed when he felt pain throwing. Last week, Proctor was shut down after about a dozen pitches in the bullpen.

Oakland beat the Royals 12-1, scoring seven runs in the second inning. The 12 runs were the most by the A's since beating Arizona 15-1 on June 17, 2008. ... 1911 - Detroit's Ty Cobb hit his first grand slam. After six innings, the Tigers led the Red Sox, 10-1. Boston came back to win the game 13-11 in 10 innings.

1911 - The New York Giants scored a major league record 10 runs before the St. Louis Cardinals retired the first batter in the first inning. Fred Merkle drove in six of the Giants' 13 runs in the first en route to a 19-5 rout. Rube Marquard of the Giants entered the game in the second inning and set a record for relievers with 14 strikeouts in his eight-inning appearance.

1923 - Joe Sewell of the Cleveland Indians struck out twice in one game for the first time in his career. Washington Senator rookie Wally Warmoth was the pitcher. In a 14-year career, Sewell had only one other multiple strikeout game.

1942 - Boston's Jim Tobin became the only pitcher in modern history to hit three home runs in one game. Tobin led the Braves to a 6-5 win over the Chicago Cubs. His fourth at-bat was a fly ball caught against the fence in left field.

1952 - In an Appalachian League game, Ron Necciai of the Bristol Twins struck out 27 batters while pitching a 7-0 no-hitter against the Welch Miners.

1955 - Mickey Mantle hit three home runs - two left-handed and one right-handed - as the Yankees beat the Detroit Tigers 5-2.
