      Ice Picks: NHL best bets
      --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Vancouver Canucks at Chicago Blackhawks (-160, 5)

      Welcome back Roberto Luongo.

After a rough start to the Canucks’ second round series, Luongo locked down the Blackhawks for a 3-1 Game 3 victory in Chicago Tuesday.

He stopped 24 of 25 shots including 10 big saves in the third period to hang on to the win. In the past two games, Luongo has cracked down the stretch and allowed the Blackhawks to come back from three and two-goal deficits.

Luongo didn’t just let his performance do the talking. The Canucks captain constantly chirped Chicago’s forwards whenever they were within an ear shot. The brunt of most of those verbal lashings is Chicago winger Dustin Byfuglien, who was whistled for interference in Game 3.

"Unfortunately after the game I was going to congratulate him, but he skated away with his head down. I'm sure we'll talk next game," Luongo joked with reporters.

Not that Luongo needed any extra motivation for Game 4, but it seems one of hockey’s best net minders has a chip on his shoulder heading into Thursday.

      Pick: Under 5

Detroit Red Wings at Anaheim Ducks (+130, 5.5)

What’s the NHL playoffs without a little bit of controversy?

The Anaheim Ducks may have gotten away with a 2-1 win Tuesday despite Detroit forward Marion Hossa scoring the tying goal in the final minute of the game. However, with all the commotion in front of the net, the officials whistled the play dead after losing sight of the puck.

"I just saw it lying there on the goal line and I just dove and thought for sure it was in, but he blew the whistle right when I touched it," Hossa told reporters. "Sometimes it happens and it's frustrating, but the game is over and we just have to go through that and keep battling."

Red Wings coach Mike Babcock voiced his disappointment with the call following the game and is trying to keep his team focused, despite having the wind knocked out of them for the second straight contest.

Hockey fans can almost taste the frustration brooding in the Red Wings locker room, most of which is targeted at Anaheim goaltender Jonas Hiller. He’s stymied the defending champs, allowing just seven goals on 145 shots during this series.

      Pick: Anaheim +130

Tampa Bay Rays at New York Yankees [7:05 PM ET]

Rays: Jeff Niemann (2-3, 5.68) hopes to pitch the Rays to their first three-game win streak. The second-year right-hander had his worst start of the season Saturday in a 10-6 loss to Boston, allowing six runs and seven hits in three innings, the shortest start of his career. Niemann had surrendered five earned runs in his previous three starts over 17 innings before getting hit hard by the Red Sox. This will be Niemann's first appearance against the Yankees. Carlos Pena, who hit his major league-leading 12th home run to win the game last night, is 10-for-30 (.333) with three homers lifetime vs. Andy Pettitte.

The Rays are 5-17 in their last 22 games vs. a left-handed starter.
The Under is 11-3 in the Rays' last 14 games as an underdog.

Yankees (-160, O/U 10.5): With their fourth consecutive loss, 4-3 to the Rays last night , the Yankees matched their longest skid from last season and dropped to 3-9 against the AL East. Andy Pettitte (2-1, 3.82) looks to rebound from his worst performance of the season for New York. After limiting opponents to three earned runs or fewer in each of his first four starts, the left-hander was tagged for five runs and nine hits in 5 2-3 innings Friday against the Los Angeles Angels. Pettitte held the Rays to three runs through 7 1-3 innings April 15 at Tropicana Field. He is 15-4 with a 3.70 ERA in 25 starts against Tampa Bay.

The Yankees are 1-6 in their last 7 games off a loss.
The Under is 8-2 in Pettitte's last 10 home starts vs. the Rays.

Tampa Bay Rays at New York Yankees (-151, 10.5)

The New York Yankees have experienced their share of potential distractions in the first month of the season. They've also endured more losses than expected from a team with baseball's highest payroll.

Hoping to avoid their first five-game losing streak in nearly two years, the Yankees close a brief two-game series against the visiting Tampa Bay Rays on Thursday night.

The offseason additions of big-name free agents CC Sabathia, A.J. Burnett and Mark Teixeira only served to increase expectations for the Yankees (13-14), who reached the playoffs 13 straight seasons before falling short last year.

Anything less than a World Series title is usually unacceptable in New York, where empty seats in the new $1.5 billion Yankee Stadium have received as much attention as the team's disappointing play on the field.

Sabathia, Burnett and Teixeira have all performed well below expectations with their new team. Sabathia (4.85 ERA) and Burnett (5.26) have combined for only three wins in 12 starts and each sports an ERA well above their career averages while Teixeira is batting .209 with 15 RBIs.

Teixeira delivered a game-tying, three-run double in the eighth inning of Wednesday night's 4-3, 10-inning loss to Tampa Bay (13-16), but also stranded a runner at third with one out in the 10th when he flied out to shallow right.

"I've got to get that runner home,'' Teixeira said. "I tried to hit a fly ball and I popped it up a little bit. Little things.''

Teixeira's slump can be partly attributed to the absence of Alex Rodriguez, who has yet to play this season following hip surgery. Rodriguez, who likely will bat behind Teixeira, could return as early as Friday at Baltimore.

"People are asking if it's Friday,'' manager Joe Girardi said before Wednesday's game. "I'm not going to say 100 percent he's not going to be here - or he is going to be here.''

With their fourth consecutive loss, the Yankees matched their longest skid from last season and dropped to 3-9 against the AL East. They last dropped five in a row May 25-29, 2007.

                    Pick: Tampa Bay +143

Chicago Cubs at Houston Astros (+138, 9.5)

Ted Lilly has been dominant at home for the Chicago Cubs this year. That's certainly not been the case on the road for the left-hander.

On Thursday night, Lilly looks to avoid another rough start away from home as the Cubs try to sweep a two-game series from the Houston Astros.

Lilly (3-2, 3.13 ERA) allowed one run and five hits while striking out 10 in eight innings of a 6-1 victory over Florida on Saturday at Wrigley Field. He is 2-1 with a 0.42 ERA at home this season, but 1-1 with a 9.00 ERA on the road.

Lilly, who hasn't pitched past the fifth inning in either road outing, allowed five runs, eight hits - including four home runs - and was fortunate to get more than enough support in Chicago's 11-6 win at Houston on April 8. He gave up five runs in a 7-2 loss at Arizona on April 27.

"We're going to score a lot of runs," Lilly told the Cubs' official Web site. "I want to be prepared so when we don't, I can limit the opposing club to two runs or whatever is necessary to get the 'W.'"

Despite his latest effort versus Houston (11-16), Lilly is 4-1 with a 3.25 ERA in seven starts against the Astros.

                    Pick: Over 9.5

The young righty’s name sounds more like a soccer player than a starting pitcher. He’s put in good work for the Braves to begin the year, posting a 2-2 record with a 1.89 ERA in six starts.

He would have a record more reflective of his efforts if Atlanta’s lineup would provide run support. The Braves have given Jurrjens an average of just 4.32 runs during his appearances, keeping him winless in his past four games.

"We can't keep wasting Jurrjens' good efforts," Chipper Jones told reporters. "The kid has pitched great and has nothing to show for it."

Jurrjens’ most recent start versus the Houston Astros was cut short due to rain. He pitched just over two innings, allowing a first-inning home run. In the start before that, he went six innings and gave up just two runs on six hits. He has allowed only seven earned runs in his six starts.

                      Dan Haren (Arizona Diamondbacks)

The D-backs right-handed starter has won three straight decisions heading into Thursday, most recently an eight-inning gem against the Milwaukee Brewers. Haren allowed just one run on four hits while striking out 11 batters.

Despite not having his best stuff, Haren has whiffed 21 batters in the past two games. He has 47 strikeouts on the year and posts a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 6.71.

"I was actually all over the place in the bullpen," Haren told the media following Saturday’s win. "I had a quick first inning. After that, I kind of locked it in. I had a good split and a good cut fastball. The breaking ball wasn't as good; I was trying to get a feel for it. Getting runs and being able to be real aggressive is nice."

Haren would have a better overall record if he got support from Arizona’s bats earlier in the schedule. But during this current winning streak, the Diamondbacks have gave their starter 13 total runs.

                      Slumping

                      Jose Contreras (Chicago White Sox)

The axe is hovering above Jose Contreras' spot in the rotation. After allowing seven run on seven hits in just over three innings of work against Texas Saturday, the White Sox are considering demoting the struggling righty.

"I don't want to give up on him," Ozzie Guillen told the press. "It's not my style, but I'd like to know what's going through my mind. I'm going crazy about it. It's driving his pitching coach (Don Cooper) crazy. The stuff is there. I've seen people get people out with less stuff, and that's a shame. Right now I don't have any answers about the next start. Right now I will pencil him in for the next start. We'll see if we change our mind the next couple days."

Contreras is 0-4 in five starts and lugs a chunky 8.31 ERA. He has given up 16 earned runs in his past three starts and has walked nine batters while striking out seven. Going back to 2008, Chicago is 1-7 in Contreras’ past eight starts.

                      Anibal Sanchez (Florida Marlins)

After a great start to the year, the Florida Marlins are coming back to earth. One of the reasons is the decline of starter Anibal Sanchez, who has lost three straight games heading into Thursday.

Sanchez began the year by giving up just two earned runs in his first two starts but has since allowed 19 earned runs during this current skid. In his most recent start, Sanchez served up six runs on nine hits including two home runs in four innings against the Chicago Cubs Saturday.

The damage is being done in the first inning, where Sanchez has allowed nine runs including three home runs in his past two starts. On the year, he has given up 14 hits in his first 15 pitches and has allowed opponents to hit .467 BA to begin games.

"The cold in particular makes me uncomfortable when it comes time to pitch," Sanchez told the Sun Sentinel. "That's not an excuse. I have to try to make some adjustments in that first inning, try to come in a little more aggressive and see what I can do. I'm expecting not to have that same problem [next time] in the first inning."

                        SEE YOU IN COURT

The New York Yankees' former scouting director in this baseball hotbed has filed a $3 million lawsuit against the team for firing him amid a probe of alleged bonus skimming from a top teenage prospect. Ramon Valdivia, one of two scouts fired last year during a Major League Baseball investigation of skimming from contracts with Latin American players, said he is seeking damages against the Yankees to restore his name and hopefully pave the way for his return to baseball.

                        SAVE THE 'PEN

Cleveland's beleaguered bullpen got a boost from its newest member, Aaron Laffey. He had been scheduled to start Thursday night, but the Indians moved him to a relief role and he allowed two hits in three scoreless innings for his first career save in a 9-2 win over Boston. He is 2-0 this year and all 29 of his previous major league appearances were as a starter.

Albert Pujols is batting .611 (11 for 18) with two homers and three RBIs against the Pirates in five games this season and .371 for his career with 37 homers and 109 RBIs in 490 at-bats.

Cincinnati Reds pitcher Bronson Arroyo had one of the worst outings of his career. Coming off a stellar performance in his last start, Arroyo gave up nine runs in one inning in a 15-3 loss to Milwaukee. He faced 12 batters overall and retired only two of them. The right-hander gave up seven hits and walked three. The nine runs allowed were one shy of his career high.

                        GET WELL SOON

Red Sox announcer Jerry Remy is taking an indefinite leave of absence after having setbacks following cancer surgery. The 56-year-old Remy does color commentary for the New England Sports Network. Remy is a former smoker who had surgery for lung cancer late last year and later developed an infection and pneumonia. The former major league second baseman for California and Boston said he disclosed his illness to reinforce the dangers of smoking.

The Orioles beat the Twins 4-1 night in a rain-shortened game marred by four delays totaling 3 hours, 46 minutes. The teams played a total of 1 hour, 27 minutes before the final stoppage occurred with one out in the top of the sixth.

                        LACKING K's

Randy Johnson, who stands in second place all-time on the career strikeout list, didn't have any against Colorado. It was only the fifth time since 1999 that Johnson failed to record a strikeout in a game. The last time was in 2006 when he was pitching for the Yankees.

                        SPEAKING

"Streaks are fine, but we have more important things in mind. Hopefully, it's just a stepping stone on the way to something more important. The fact that we're playing well takes precedence over anything else. The good part about this thing is that this is about winning games, which is what we try to do every day.'' - Dodgers manager Joe Torre after his team won its 13th straight home game to start the season, breaking the major league record.

2008 - Joey Votto hit three homers as Cincinnati beat Chicago 9-0. Jon Lieber became only the second pitcher in Cubs history to give up four homers in an inning. Votto started the four-homer second inning off Lieber, who was making his first start of the season. Adam Dunn and Paul Bako also had solo shots, and Jerry Hairston Jr.'s two-run homer completed the history-matching rally.

Today's birthdays: James Loney 25; Conor Jackson 27.
