    Daily Sports Roundup

    Tuesday, May 5

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Cavaliers try to open their second-round set with a victory, and the Wings head out west tied in their series with the Ducks.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

LeBron James and the Cavaliers will tip off their second-round series with the Hawks at home on Tuesday night, with Cleveland pegged as a big 11.5-point favorite. James poured in 36 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in his team's 99-78 series-clinching win over the Pistons way back on April 26. The Hawks, meanwhile, needed seven games to get past the Heat in the first round; they got 27 points from Joe Johnson on Sunday afternoon in their 91-78 Game 7 victory.

The other NBA game on tap for Tuesday has Dallas at Denver, with the Nuggets holding a 1-0 series lead after picking up a 109-95 home win in the opener on Sunday. Nene had 24 points for Denver in that contest, while Carmelo Anthony pitched in with 23 points. Dirk Nowitzki led the way on offense for Dallas with 28 points, and Jason Kidd was good for 15 points in the loss. The oddsmakers like Denver's chances in Game 2, as they have been pegged as the 6-point favorite.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

Tim Lincecum will be gunning for his third victory of the season on Tuesday afternoon when his Giants take on the Cubs in Chicago. The righthander is 2-1 with a 3.16 ERA on the season, and he grabbed the victory last time out vs. the Dodgers by allowing just three runs over seven innings of work. Lincecum's opponent on Tuesday will be Sean Marshall; he's at 0-1 with a 3.32 ERA so far.

Also on the National League schedule for Tuesday: Houston at Washington, Milwaukee at Pittsburgh, the Mets at Atlanta, Cincinnati at Florida, Colorado at San Diego, Arizona at the Dodgers, and Philadelphia at St. Louis. Cardinals probable starter Adam Wainwright is perfect at 3-0 (with a 2.76 ERA) this season.

On tap in the Junior Circuit on Tuesday: Cleveland at Toronto, Baltimore at Tampa Bay, Texas at Seattle, Minnesota at Detroit, the White Sox at Kansas City, the Angels at Oakland, and Boston at the Yankees. Red Sox probable starter Josh Beckett (2-2, 7.22 ERA) was pounded by the Bronx Bombers on April 25, surrendering eight earned runs on 10 hits over just five innings of work.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Coming off a big win in Game 2 on Saturday the Blackhawks will be looking to take a 2-1 series lead on Tuesday night when they host Vancouver in the third game of their second-round set. Patrick Sharp scored twice in Chicago's 6-3 comeback win on Saturday, while Nikolai Khabibulin stopped 18 of 21 Vancouver shots. Sami Salo and Alexander Edler staked the Canucks to a 2-0 lead in the first period in Game 2 before their team's collapse, while Roberto Luongo was victimized for five goals on 31 shots. Chicago is a -140 home favorite Tuesday.

The other Western Conference series also stages a Game 3 on Tuesday night, with Detroit on the west coast to face the Ducks. Anaheim pulled out a 4-3 win in triple overtime on Sunday afternoon to knot up the best-of-seven set at a game apiece. Todd Marchant had the OT winner for the Ducks in that contest, while Ryan Getzlaf picked up a goal and two assists in regulation time. Jonas Hiller had 59 saves in the win, and Wings counterpart Chris Osgood stopped 42 shots.

      Six-pack for Tuesday

Top six coaches in NBA history, as far as playoff wins.......

      6) Jerry Sloan, 87-88, .497

      5) Gregg Popovich, 92-51, .643

      4) Arnold Auerbach, 99-69, .589

      3) Larry Brown, 100-89, .529

      2) Pat Riley, 171-111, .606

      1) Phil Jackson. 179-77, ..699

      ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Tuesday's List of 13: Random thoughts on Cinco de Mayo......

      13) In his career coaching NBA playoff series, Phil Jackson is 42-0 in a series when he wins Game 1; he is 6-8 when he loses Game 1.

      12) Monday night started the fifth week of the baseball season- there are already 111 players on the disabled list. Baseball players are soft, except for the catchers.

      11) Teams that stash underachieving players on the disabled list are flat-out cheating-- each player can only be optioned to the minors so many times, so if you avoid doing that, it helps. Also, players who have been in majors 5+ years have to give their permission to be sent to minors. Only part of Chien Ming-Wang that is hurt? His pride.

      10) Reds are 6-7 in their last thirteen games, after losing to Florida in 14 innings Monday; four of those six wins were shutouts.

      9) A's are 3-3 when they score 7+ runs in a game; the other 29 teams are a combined 171-25 when they score 7+ runs.

      8) Dodgers are now 11-0 at home after whacking Arizona Monday.

      7) Zack Greinke is now 6-0, 0.40 after blanking the White Sox, 3-0.

      6) Forty years ago tonight, Bill Russell won the last NBA title of his tremendous career; imagine the NBA playoffs being over May 5? The second of four rounds just started, for Pete's sake.

      5) Hard to ignore all the empty seats in ballparks this spring; crowd for Pirate game Monday was announced at 8,482; in Florida, 10,825. Mets' announcer Gary Cohen said the crowd in Atlanta was smallest Mets had ever played in front of at Turner Field (19,132).

      4) Mark Teixeira hit two homers for Bronx, but Bombers dropped to 0-4 against the Red Sox, as Phil Hughes needed 94 pitches to get thru four innings in his second start of season. To be fair, his Sunday start was rained out and this one started 2.5 hours late, but 11 baserunners allowed in four innings is still alarming for Hughes.

      3) Part of reason for Tampa Bay's slow start this year is BJ Upton's .152 batting average, and Scott Kazmir having an ERA of 6.00.

      2) Road teams won both NBA games Monday, as Orlando, Houston are both off to 1-0 starts in their series. In the only NHL game down in Washington, Capitals are now up 2-0 after their 4-3 win over the Penguins-- series now goes to Steel City for Games 3-4.

      1) Houston outscored the Lakers by 19 points when Ron Artest was in the game (40:05) which means in the 7:55 he sat out, Lakers beat them by 11 points. Combination of Artest/Battier is going to make it very difficult for Kobe Bryant (14-31) to run amok in this series.

      Fact of the Day

Mexican Independence Day is September 16, not May 5; Mexicans celebrate Cinco de Mayo to commemorate an unlikely win against French forces in the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.

        Len’s Top Five

        Tuesday, May 5

        Len's Top 5

Happy Cinco de Mayo everyone, here's my Top 5 for May 5, 2009 from len berman sports.

        1. Quick Hits

LeBron James wins his first NBA MVP award. Starting next year, all NBA players will be jockeying for second place.

Surprise Kentucky Derby winner "Mine That Bird" will race in the Preakness, the second jewel of the Triple Crown, May 16th.

It ended at 1:10am this morning. After tons of rain, and lotsa empty seats, the Red Sox beat the Yankees 6-4 in their first matchup at the new Stadium.

L.A. yin yang. Lakers lose game one to Houston 100-92. But Joe Torre's Dodgers beat Arizona 7-2, becoming first modern National League team to start the season 11-0 at home.

        2. Looking out for #1

Way to go Serena. She's been toppled from the top spot in women's tennis by Dinara Safina. So Serena shows up in Rome saying "we all know who the real number one is." "Quite frankly I'm the best in the world." Gracious to a fault. And she wonders why people don't like her?

        3. No Cheering in the Press Box

What's with the Dalai Lama? He spoke at Gillette Stadium the other day in Foxboro, delivering a message of "we are all the same." But he was wearing a Patriots cap! Hey, that's taking sides buddy. It's the end of neutrality in sport. Next thing you know local baseball announcers will openly root for the home team.

        4. Shoot!

There's a move afoot to ban the starter's pistol at high school track meets in Ontario. Even tho they fire blanks, it just doesn't look good to have guns in schools. Unfortunately, alternative forms of pistols are deemed to be "too expensive." Hey, I think they should have some guy yelling "on your mark, get set, go?" But that's just me.

        5. Hits, Runs, and Anatomy

There's just too much information about ballplayers these days. First, pitch counts, then batting average with runners in scoring position, and now man boobs. All this talk about steroids causing A-Rod and Roger Clemens to sprout boobies has weirded me out. This on the heels of Mike Piazza's back acne. I knew there was a reason I hated going into locker rooms.

Today's Birthday: I just love saying the name Ziggy, as in former Islander Ziggy Palffy. 37.
Bonus Birthday: Anchorman Brian Williams. 50.

Today in Sports: Red Sox pitcher Cy Young pitches the first modern perfect game against the Philadelphia A's. 1904.

Bonus Event: If you had the French and the points you lost.. Mexican forces pull a major upset, beating the French at the Battle of Puebla. Coincidentally it happened on Cinco de Mayo which means the 5th of May. 1862.

                NBA playoffs

Hawks went 4-3 in Miami series, but none of the games were tense at the end, so maybe their fatigue factor isn't same as for Celtics, who got down 28 against Orlando in their Game 1 last night. Cleveland is 3-1 vs the Hawks this season, but only one of four games was decided by more than six points. Atlanta lost its two visits here this season, 110-96 and 102-96. Cavaliers have to guard against being overconfident vs tired club

Denver is 5-1 so far in playoffs, winning by 31-15-58-21 and 14 points. Nuggets are 5-0 vs Dallas this year, with three of wins by three or less points--last four games stayed under total. Mavericks lost their visits to Denver this season, 108-105/99-97/109-95. In game 1, Nuggets had 25-9 scoring edge from foul line (Den 25-36, Dal 9-13), and shot 55% from the floor, while forcing 20 Maverick turnovers.

Atlanta Hawks at Cleveland Cavaliers [TNT | 8:05 PM ET]

Hawks: One day after their Game 7 victory over Miami, coach Mike Woodson gathered his players for a brief pep talk. Woodson wanted to hammer in the Hawks' minds that they must manage their emotions in a venue where Atlanta has lost 4 straight and 8 of 10. Though the Hawks were 1-3 this season against Cleveland, Joe Johnson believes his team drew confidence from ending the Cavs' 11-game winning streak 5 months ago at Philips Arena. The Hawks fell to 16-27 on the road this season after losing 2 of 3 in Miami. Along with Johnson, Josh Smith expects to draw several defensive assignments against LeBron James.

The Hawks are 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games as an underdog.

                    Key Injuries - NONE

                    PROJECTED SCORE: 81

Cavaliers (-11.5, O/U 179): The Cavaliers, who are 41-2 at home this season after sweeping Detroit in the first round, took a 6-point victory over the Hawks 2 months ago at Quicken Loans Arena. Hawks coach Mike Woodson considers LeBron James a complete package of smarts, power, finesse and speed, and that's just offensively. As a defender, James' ferocity impresses Atlanta's fifth-year head coach. James is coming off a sweep of the Pistons in which he joined Oscar Robertson as the only other NBA player to average 32 points, 11.3 rebounds and 7.5 assists in a single postseason series.

The Cavaliers are 14-3 ATS in their last 17 playoff games as a favorite.
The Under is 14-4 in the Cavaliers' last 18 Conference Semifinals games.

                    Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 93 (UNDER - Total Play of the Day)

                      -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Atlanta Hawks at Cleveland Cavaliers (-11.5, 179.5)

Coach Mike Woodson spent much of the last two weeks insisting that his Atlanta Hawks had to defend an entire team, not just one player.

Now that the Hawks have advanced to the NBA Eastern Conference semifinals after beating Dwyane Wade and the Miami Heat, Woodson knows the next challenge, facing newly crowned league MVP LeBron James and the top-seeded Cleveland Cavaliers, will be much harder.

"They've got one thing on their mind, just like we do," Woodson said Monday. "They're trying to win a title, and we're trying to do the same thing."

One day after coasting past Miami for a Game 7 victory that advanced Atlanta to the second round of the playoffs for the first time in 10 years, Woodson gathered his players for a brief pep talk.

Not that it was some kind of news flash, but Woodson wanted to hammer in the Hawks' minds that they must manage their emotions in a venue where Atlanta has lost four straight and eight of 10.

The Cavaliers, who are 41-2 at home this season after sweeping Detroit in the first round, took a six-point victory over the Hawks two months ago at Quicken Loans Arena. Woodson was so frustrated with the officiating that he was ejected. Point guard Mike Bibby and forward Josh Smith also were hit with technical fouls.

"It's really important to stay calm," Smith said. "We've just got to stay together. No matter what goes on, we can't let our emotions get to us because every possession is so important."

James presents enough matchup problems to make Woodson lose sleep. He considers the 24-year-old a complete package of smarts, power, finesse and speed, and that's just offensively. As a defender, James' ferocity impresses Atlanta's fifth-year head coach.

"I've been in this league 27 years, and I've never seen a player - I think Michael Jordan is probably the best player to ever play this game - but I've never seen a player like LeBron with the strength, the athletic ability, the speed and just the know-how to play the game," Woodson said. "It's scary because he's so young. So it's going to be a challenge for our team, and that's a good thing because our guys will step up. I'd like to think our guys can beat him."

Though the Hawks were 1-3 this season against Cleveland, Atlanta guard Joe Johnson believes his team drew confidence from ending the Cavs' 11-game winning streak five months ago at Philips Arena. Then again, the Hawks are essentially two different teams at home and on the road.

They led by as many 29 points in a Game 7 win over the Heat, boosting Atlanta's home record to 34-10 this season. On the road, the Hawks fell to 16-27 after losing two of three in Miami.

                      Pick: Over

Dallas Mavericks at Denver Nuggets (-6.5, 206)

So, the Dallas Mavericks want to toughen up to hang with the NBA's new "Bad Boys"?

                      Dirk Nowitzki knows better.

"I don't think we can play as physical as them. We don't have the personality for it," Dallas' center acknowledged Monday, 24 hours after getting knocked around like a pinball in a 109-95 loss to Denver.

The rough-and-tumble Nuggets were quicker, stronger, tougher and much more athletic than the Mavericks in the opener of their second-round series that left Dallas' players grabbing more bags of ice than usual and their coach threatening to rat out the officials to the league.

On Monday, Dallas coach Rick Carlisle backed down, declaring: "The officials didn't lose the game for us yesterday. We lost the game because we turned the ball over too much and we were too soft in our physical disposition."

So, the Mavericks have been searching for ways to match Denver's aggression.

The thing is, the Mavericks are a team of jump-shooters, they don't attack the rim like the Nuggets do.

So, Nuggets coach George Karl is expecting the Mavericks to tighten the screws in other areas in Game 2 Tuesday night.

"I think they can fine-tune some little things, but if they're going to change their personality on who they are, I don't think that's the way to beat us," Karl said. "I think you've come here, you've built yourself on some damn good players playing a style, and you can tinker with that, and I think they will."

Carlisle didn't tip his hand, but Karl said he expects the Mavs to put Antoine Wright or James Singleton on the floor more often to keep a defender on both Carmelo Anthony and J.R. Smith.

The Nuggets forced 20 turnovers in Game 1, outshot the Mavericks 36-13 from the foul line, outhustled them 29-4 on fastbreak points and outmuscled them 58-30 in the paint.

                      Pick: Nuggets
