Pittsburgh Penguins at Washington Capitals (-120, 5.5)

Who would have thought that a no-name goalie would steal the show in Game 1 of a seven-game series involving the NHL’s biggest stars?

Capitals netminder Simeon Varlamov pulled off a miraculous save with the score tied 2-2 with the Penguins threatening to take the lead. Pens captain Sidney Crosby had an open net to shoot at, but Varlamov somehow got his stick back in time to stop the puck from crossing the goal line.

“You don’t like to waste an open net like that,” Crosby told reporters after the loss. “You wind up losing the game 3-2, look back and say what if…”

Pittsburgh still has many reasons to feel good about its Game 1 performance. The club outshot Washington 36-26 and took just two penalties against a skilled set of forwards.

“I’m sure if we keep getting 40 shots a game,” Pittsburgh’s Maxime Talbot said, “we’ll like the result.”

For that to happen, the Pens will have to score more with the man advantage. They went 0-for-5 on Saturday and haven’t scored a power play marker in any of their last five games.

“It’s a one-goal game, and the [Washington] special teams beat us, 1-0,” Pens defenseman Brooks Orpik said. “The story, at the end of the day, is that their power play got one, and ours didn’t.”

Expect Crosby and Company to come out on top Monday sending the series back to Pittsburgh tied 1-1.

      Pick: Pittsburgh

Chicago White Sox at Kansas City Royals [8:10 PM ET]

White Sox: After consecutive rough starts, Bartolo Colon (2-1, 4.15) allowed an unearned run and four hits while striking out six in seven innings of a 2-1 win over Seattle on Tuesday. Colon is 15-7 with a 4.84 ERA in 25 starts vs. the Royals. Jermaine Dye could be back from missing Sunday's game after being hit on the left hand with a pitch a night earlier. "We'll see how he's doing, how he can tolerate the pain when he's hitting," manager Ozzie Guillen said. Dye went 5-for-12 against KC last month and is batting .389 (14-for-36) with 3 homers and 8 RBIs vs. Greinke.

The Over is 7-1 in the White Sox's last 8 games as an underdog.

Royals (-200, O/U 8): Zack Greinke looks to become the ML's first six-game winner while trying to help the Royals win their third straight contest. Greinke (5-0, 0.50 ERA), who won his last three starts of 2008, allowed 3 hits and struck out 7 in 6 innings of a 2-0 win at Chicago on April 8. Until a first-inning RBI single by Toronto's Vernon Wells on Wednesday, Greinke hadn't given up an earned run in 43 consecutive innings. Jose Guillen is batting .438 (7-for-16) with 7 RBIs in his last four contests. He is a lifetime .310 hitter with 9 home runs and 33 RBIs against the White Sox, but is 4-for-23 vs. Bartolo Colon.

Cincinnati Reds at Florida Marlins (-150, 8)

Behind some exceptional pitching, the Cincinnati Reds have gotten off to a surprisingly solid start to the season. Now they just need their staff ace join the act.

Aaron Harang looks to put a frustrating April behind him and help the Reds continue their road success Monday night when they face the Florida Marlins, losers of three in a row.

Cincinnati (13-11) defeated Pittsburgh 5-0 on Sunday to improve to 9-4 away from Great American Ball Park. The Reds didn't win their ninth road game last season until May 24 and their 10th didn't come until June 4, in their 31st game away from Cincinnati.

The Reds have pitched shutouts in three of their last four games to give them a major league-leading five. Last season, Cincinnati tied with San Diego for the fourth-fewest shutouts with six.

Harang was a part of one shutout this season despite a very inconsistent first month.

The right-hander has given up two runs over 21 innings in three of his starts, but 11 runs over 11 innings in the other two. On Tuesday against Houston, he allowed six runs and six hits in five innings of an 8-3 loss.

Despite posting a 6.98 ERA in three starts against the Marlins (14-11) last season, Harang went 2-1. Hanley Ramirez was 4-for-11 with three homers against him in 2008, while Dan Uggla was 4-for-7 with a homer and three doubles.

Florida is coming off Sunday's 6-4 loss to Chicago, its 10th defeat in 13 games after starting the season 11-1.

Although the Marlins haven't won at Dolphin Stadium since beating New York 2-1 on April 12, Ramirez and Uggla should be excited about returning home for the next four games.

Josh Johnson (2-0, 2.60) looks to help Florida get back in the win column when he takes the ball in the opener.

Johnson gave up three runs and nine hits in six innings of a 4-3 victory over the Mets on Wednesday, but didn't get the decision.

The Marlins are 4-1 with Johnson on the mound, but the right-hander hasn't won since his second start April 12. He's been at his best at Dolphin Stadium, going 2-0 with a 0.40 ERA in three starts.

                    Pick: Marlins

New York Mets at Atlanta Braves (-125, 8.5)

New York hopes John Maine can build on his strongest outing of the season when it opens a two-game set Monday night in Atlanta, where the Mets went 1-8 last year.

Both teams have dropped three of their last four games and neither has developed any consistency so far.

The Braves' biggest problem has been offense, as they've averaged 3.3 runs while losing 12 of 18 to negate a strong first week.

Atlanta (11-13) was 3-for-14 with men in scoring position in Sunday's 7-5 loss to Houston, stranding 11 to lose the decisive game of a second straight series. The Braves are playing without catcher Brian McCann and outfielder Garret Anderson, both of whom are expected to return from the disabled list later this week.

"They're our big thumpers. That's a lot to overcome," manager Bobby Cox said.

Cox's team may have a good chance to get back on track Monday, as New York (10-13) has dropped seven of its last nine on the road. Rain caused the decisive finale of the Mets' series at Philadelphia to be postponed Sunday, a day after they lost 6-5 in 10 innings.

Oliver Perez turned in another disastrous start in Saturday's defeat as concerns about New York's rotation continued to grow.

The Mets, though, are feeling better about Maine (1-2, 5.40 ERA) following his latest start. After posting a 9.28 ERA in his previous two appearances, the right-hander gave up one hit and one unearned run in six innings of last Monday's 7-1 victory over Florida.

Maine will be working on six days' rest after being pushed back from Sunday.

Even more time has passed since Carlos Delgado appeared in the starting lineup, as the first baseman has been dealing with a hip injury. He appears ready to return, not a good sign for the Braves considering he hit .379 with four home runs and 15 RBIs in 18 games against them last year.

Atlanta's relievers, who pitched seven innings Saturday due to a rain delay, have given up seven runs over the last two games. They allowed two runs in 23 innings during the previous 10 contests.

                    Pick: Over

                      SCOREBOARD

                      Monday, May 4

Boston at New York Yankees (7:05 p.m. EDT). Joba Chamberlain (1-0) starts for the Yankees against Jon Lester (1-2) in Boston’s first game at the new Yankee Stadium. The Red Sox swept a three-game series against New York at Fenway Park from April 24-26.

                      STARS

                      Sunday

                      — Carl Crawford, Rays, tied a modern major league record with six stolen bases, going 4 for 4 with an RBI to lead Tampa Bay over Boston 5-3. Eddie Collins, Otis Nixon and Eric Young were the other players to steal six bases since 1900.

                      — Johnny Cueto, Reds, limited Pittsburgh to four singles while striking out nine in eight innings of a 5-0 victory. He lowered his ERA to 1.65.

                      — Justin Verlander, Tigers, struck out 11 and pitched two-hit ball for seven innings of Detroit’s 3-1 victory over Cliff Lee and the Cleveland Indians.

                      — Derrek Lee, Cubs, hit a tiebreaking grand slam in Chicago’s 6-2 win over Florida.

                      — Jose Guillen, Royals, homered and drove in four runs to rally Kansas City past Minnesota 7-5 after Twins starter Scott Baker carried a no-hit bid into the seventh inning.

                      LONG DAY AT THE OFFICE

Jose Lopez blooped an RBI single in the 15th inning and Seattle, after pulling off a pair of late rallies, beat Oakland 8-7 in the longest game in the majors this season. It lasted 5 hours, 2 minutes, and was the longest by innings and time in 2009, the Elias Sports Bureau said. A throwing error by Dana Eveland, who started Friday night and pitched 4 2-3 innings, set up the winning run. Jason Vargas, called up from the minors Saturday, got the win in his first big league appearance since July 2007.

                      HOME SWEET HOME

The Los Angeles Dodgers beat San Diego 7-3 to set a club record for the best home winning streak to begin a season. The 10-0 start at Chavez Ravine eclipsed the mark set at Ebbets Field by the 1946 Brooklyn Dodgers, when current manager Joe Torre was 5 years old and growing up in the borough. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, this streak is the longest by any NL team since 1983, when Torre’s Atlanta Braves won their first 10 games at Fulton County Stadium to tie the modern league record shared by the 1918 New York Giants and 1970 Chicago Cubs.

                      REMEMBERED AT WRIGLEY

The Cubs retired No. 31 in honor of Ferguson Jenkins and Greg Maddux. Both pitchers spent 10 years in Chicago and each won a Cy Young Award in a Cubs uniform. With their families sitting beside them, Jenkins and Maddux each gave a brief speech. The aces then watched from home plate as former teammates lifted their numbers to the top of the foul poles at Wrigley Field. Maddux’s jersey went up in right and Jenkins, a Hall of Famer, had his number in left. Their number joined Ernie Banks (14), Billy Williams (26), Ron Santo (10) and Ryne Sandberg (23) up on the foul poles.

                      SPEAKING

“Did you see that first ball he hit? I wouldn’t throw to him, either.”— Brewers outfielder Mike Cameron on teammate Prince Fielder, who walked three times after hitting a home run in the second inning of Milwaukee’s 4-3 victory over Arizona.
