    Daily Sports Roundup

    Monday, May 4

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Celtics begin their second-round series against the Magic, while the Lakers continue their playoff march vs. the Rockets.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The Celtics and Lakers both begin their second-round playoff series on Monday night, with Boston hosting Orlando and Los Angeles getting a visit from Houston. The Celtics avoided early elimination with a 109-99 win over the Bulls in Game 7 of their first-round set on Saturday, with Ray Allen tossing in 23 points. The Magic last took to the court on Thursday night, when they bounced the Sixers with a 114-89 win. Boston is a 2.5-point favorite for Monday, with a total of 188.5.

Kobe Bryant and company finished off the Jazz in just five games in the first round, with the Lakers clinching the series with a 107-96 victory last Monday night. Bryant was good for 31 points in that contest. The Rockets, meanwhile, took six games to get past the Trail Blazers in their opening series, winning the clincher 92-76 at home last Thursday. Ron Artest led the way with 27 points in that matchup. The Lakers are 8-point favorites for Monday with the total at 193.5.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

Unbeaten in five starts so far this season, Mariners righthander Felix Hernandez will be looking to stay on a roll on Monday night when he takes to the mound at home against the division-rival Rangers. Hernandez is 4-0 with a 2.38 ERA through five outings in 2009, and he's tossed 15 scoreless innings (allowing just eight hits) over his last two starts. Countering for the Rangers on Monday night will be righthander Kevin Millwood, who is 2-2 with a sparkling 2.13 ERA this year.

Elsewhere on the American League schedule for Monday it's Minnesota at Detroit, Cleveland at Toronto, Baltimore at Tampa Bay, the White Sox at Kansas City, and the Angels at Oakland. As well, the Red Sox will be on the road on Monday to take on their rivals at Yankee Stadium. Scheduled Boston starter Jon Lester went six innings against New York on April 24, surrendering just two runs.

Over in the National League on Monday it'll be Houston at Washington, the Mets at Atlanta, Cincinnati at Florida, San Francisco at the Cubs, Philadelphia at St. Louis, Colorado at San Diego, Arizona at the Dodgers, and Milwaukee at Pittsburgh. Pirates probable starter Paul Maholm carries a 3-0 mark and 3.09 ERA into Monday, and the Brewers counter with Yovani Gallardo (3-1, 2.86 ERA).

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

The lone National Hockey League game on Monday night has Washington looking to take a 2-0 lead in their best-of-seven second-round series with the Penguins. The Capitals pulled out a 3-2 win at home in the series opener on Saturday afternoon, with Alexander Ovechkin scoring his fourth goal of the playoffs and Simeon Varlamov making 34 saves. Sidney Crosby and Mark Eaton replied for the Penguins, and Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 23 of 26 Caps shots. The oddsmakers have Washington listed as a -125 home favorite Monday night.

      Six-pack for Monday

Major Leagues leaders in six different statistical categories.......

ERA-- Greinke KC, 0.50; Santana NYM, 1.10.

Strikeouts-- Haren, AZ 47; Verlander, Det 45.

Stolen Bases-- Crawford, TB 17; Ellsbury Bos 13.

Home Runs-- Pena TB, 11; AGonzalez SD, Kinsler Tex, Pujols, 9.

Runs Scored-- AdJones Balt 28; Markakis Balt 27.

RBI-- Longoria, TB, 30; Pujols StL, 29.

      ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend, but mostly ranting about a tough loss in Seattle.........

      13) I almost lost my mind watching the A's lose 8-7 in 15-innings at Seattle Sunday; damn game was enough to make me puke. Giving up a game-tying homer in 9th inning will happen, but extra innings were a nightmare, and it was mostly avoidable stuff.

      12) A's scored three in 13th to take 7-4 lead, but Gonzalez imploded in bottom of inning, to point where it was 7-6 with two out and guys on 1st/3rd, with Ichiro Suzuki up-- you have to walk him there!!!!!! Guy up next is Lopez, a decent hitter, but he ain't getting in the Hall of Fame, and Ichiro is, so that answers that. Ichiro got a hit. Damn!!!

      11) First of all, A's only used three relief pitchers, but somehow had to use starter Eveland after Gio Gonzalez threw 100 pitches only 24 hours after getting called up from AAA. Andrew Bailey started to get warmed up in the 13th inning, but seemed more interested in his drink that he took with him to the mound in the bullpen. He never got in the game, and neither did Geise, who also warmed up briefly. Why in the name of Darold Knowles couldn't these guys pitch?

      10) The fact that they signed Nomar, Giambi and still have Chavez and Crosby on the team are killing me, since they're all brittle and get hurt constantly and that drives me nuts. Orlando Cabrera is Godsend because he plays every day. Good for him.

      9) I mean, I apologize for babbling about this, but when Seattle was rallying in 13th inning, there were Oakland pitchers running around in the bullpen like little lab rats-- one would warm up, then sit down in couple minutes, then another one would get up-- it looked like they were Keystone Kops. Just never see disorganization like that in the major leagues, all while young Gonzalez was blowing a 7-4 lead.

      8) Lost lot of respect for Bob Geren today; thought he was sharper than he showed in this game, which is the type of game manager can win for his team, to pull them through a tight spot. Overall, A's are in last place at 9-13, so its not hopeless, but it just seems like a roster that is poorly-constructed. Pitchers are too young, others are too old.

Now that I'm done ranting about that (I think) onto other things....

      7) Cubs' ace Zambrano tweaked his hamstring while running out bunt single-- brilliant!!! He might miss his next start.

      6) Carl Crawford stole six bases for Rays, who beat Boston three out of four for their first series win since the first week of the season.

      5) Barry Zito has now allowed just three runs in his last 20.1 IP.

      4) When Ichiro led off first inning with homer April 23 and Mariners won game 1-0, it was first time a leadoff homer won a game in the AL in 17 years, when Greg Briley homered in a 1-0 win, also for Seattle.

      3) Royals' Zack Greinke is first American League pitcher in last 97 years not to allow an earned run in his first four starts of a season.

      2) Since the Wild Card began in 1995, only 20 of 118 playoff teams finished April under .500.

      1) If you don't take anything else from reading this today, please take this with you--- NEVER LET THE OTHER TEAM'S BEST GUY BEAT YOU!!!!! A's let Ichiro bat in the 13th when they could have walked him, and it cost them the game, not that it still bothers me or anything. In September this game will be forgotten, but teams like the Mariners, who come out of nowhere to contend, these are the games they win to propel themselves into contention. Lousy teams will lose a game like this, then go into a tailspin. Ugh.

        Len’s Top Five

        Monday, May 4

        Len's Top 5

Happy Monday everyone, here's my Top 5 for May 4, 2009 from len berman sports.

        1. Quick Hits

A 50-1 shot wins the Kentucky Derby: "Mine That Bird." If you had the correct order of finish for the first four horses your $2 superfecta bet paid $557,006.40. There were 23 winning tickets.
Yankee manager Joe Girardi is getting cranky about the upcoming A-Rod book. It might be a good thing for Joe if the book takes the focus off his under achieving team.
Dallas Cowboys scouting assistant Rich Behm suffered permanent paralysis from the waist down when the team's indoor practice facility collapsed during a thunderstorm.

        2. The Red Zone

Here's what your U.S. congress is up to. A House Energy and Commerce subcommittee held hearings the other day. Swine flu? Afghanistan? Chrysler? No, no and no. The really important issue of college football and the lack of a playoff system. Texas Congressman Joe Barton said the current system is like Communism. It can't be changed. I'm thinking it has something to do with the name Joe. Joe Biden will say anything, and Joe McCarthy thought everyone was a commie. Maybe these congressmen need to ask the average Joe what they should be debating on the hill?

        3. Political Football

The great Buffalo Bills quarterback turned politician Jack Kemp died over the weekend at the age of 73. Several years back he was honored by the March of Dimes at the Waldorf. The stage was "in the round." He told the audience that Bob Hope had told him never to work in the round because you're always sticking your ass in someone's face. His comment brought down the house. The quarterback knew how to work a room.

        4. C'mon Down!

I have to agree with the editorial in yesterday's Daily News. They recommend that the Yanks should hold a lottery for every paying fan who shows up, and the winners all get to fill the expensive seats. In summary, a win win for everyone. Which means there's no chance in hell the Yankees will do it.

        5. Somewhere Dean Wormer is Smiling

Sad to say the season is over for The University of Oregon's third-ranked Ultimate Frisbee team. The last straw was playing Oregon State in the nude. They had already gotten in trouble for speeding tickets and underage drinking. I can't believe they didn't buy co-captain Dusty Becker's defense that "speeding, drinking, nudity... they're not bad things." It all makes perfect sense. They filmed "Animal House" at the University of Oregon 30 years ago. Toga Party!

Today's Birthday: Quick, who won the 1986 PGA Championship? Right Bob Tway. 50.
        Bonus Birthday: 'N Sync's Lance Bass. 30.

Today in Sports: Oops. Jockey Bill Shoemaker aboard Gallant Man was in the lead at the Kentucky Derby when he misjudged the finish line and lost by a nose to Iron Liege. 1957.

                Monday, May 4

                NBA playoffs

Celtics have to be tired after tough 7-game series vs Chicago, while the Magic is well-rested, especially considering Howard didn't play in Game 6 at Philly (suspension). Orlando's Lee is out here, though, During year, Celtics won first two meetings, then Orlando won last two, with average total in four games, 176. Doc Rivers lives in Orlando during offseason. Teams split both games in each building during season.

Lakers waxed Utah in five games, winning by 13-10-14-11 points, now Rockets come to Tinseltown, off their six-game series win vs Portland. Houston lost two of its three games in Portland, was 0-4 against Lakers during season, losing 111-82/93-81 at Staples, 105-100/93-81 in Texas. You'd think Artest would be good guy to match up with Bryant, so it'll be interesting to see how that goes.

Houston Rockets at Los Angeles Lakers [TNT | 10:35 PM ET]

Rockets: "The first time we played them T-Mac was hurt," Ron Artest said. "One time we played them at home I didn't play. The next time we played them in LA we just got rid of Rafer (Alston), a new team. The last time we played them in LA, that was a good game. We finally had our team, but they still got us in the fourth quarter." Coach Rick Adelman said, "You're not going to stop him (Kobe), you're not going to shut him down, but you've got to make him work. That's the advantage we have, throw both guys (Battier and Artest) at him and maybe we can wear him down a little bit."

The Rockets are 1-5 ATS in the last 6 meetings in Los Angeles.

Key Injuries - G Tracy McGrady (knee) is OUT for the season.
G Von Wafer (back) is QUESTIONABLE.

                    PROJECTED SCORE: 91

Lakers (-8, O/U 193.5): The top-seeded Lakers were off a week after eliminating Utah in five games. The most intriguing matchup will be Kobe Bryant against Ron Artest and Shane Battier. Bryant and Artest shoved and jawed their way through a 102-96 Lakers victory at Houston on March 11. "It wasn't much of a battle," Bryant said after scoring 37 points that night. "I kicked his (butt) tonight." Los Angeles won the season series 4-0, dominating the fourth quarter of each game. Bryant averaged 28.3 points. Andrew Bynum could see more playing time to help defend Yao Ming.

The Lakers are 2-7 ATS in their last 9 playoff games as a favorite.
The Under is 14-2-1 in LA's last 17 games following an ATS loss.

Key Injuries - G Kobe Bryant (illness) is PROBABLE.

PROJECTED SCORE: 103 (Side Play of the Day)

Orlando Magic at Boston Celtics (-2.5, 188.5)

The Celtics played a record seven overtime periods through six games of their first-round series against Chicago, and then beat the Bulls in Game 7 to advance to the Eastern Conference semifinals against the Magic. The defending champions had just one day off to rest up for Game 1 of the second round on Monday night at the new Boston Garden.

"And here we are again," Celtics guard Ray Allen said, moments after the Game 7 victory over Chicago kept alive the team's chances of an unprecedented 18th NBA title. "This is a great time of the year for the fans in Boston. There's definitely more basketball, and it's right here coming on Monday."

Boston and Orlando split their four-game regular-season series, a record that is of little consolation for the Celtics because Kevin Garnett missed one and played 16 minutes in the other before aggravating the right knee injury that is expected to keep him out for the duration of the playoffs. He is expected to have surgery as soon as it's clear he won't be ready to help in the postseason.

"We didn't win either game without Kevin," said Rivers, a former Magic coach and still an offseason resident of Orlando. "And so we're going to have to go and find out why."

Confident of victory - or preparing, just in case - Rivers had his staff put a playbook for a possible Orlando series in the players' cars when they arrived at the Garden for Game 7 on Saturday night. He gave the team the day off on Sunday to rest up, meaning the only time they'll work specifically on Orlando would be Monday's **** shootaround.

"It's similar to last year. I mean, we never got a break in the playoff series last year," Celtics forward Paul Pierce said. "I'd rather keep playing anyway. I think you get three, four days off you kind of lose it a little bit. Hey, just like the regular season, you play every other day, let's keep it going."

The Magic wrapped up their series against Philadelphia in six games on Thursday, and apparently have time to spare: They watched film of Garnett on Sunday, skeptical of whether the injured star is really out for the playoffs as the Celtics maintain. (Rivers has compared reports of Garnett's return to Bigfoot sightings.)

The Magic have their own injuries.

Guard Courtney Lee is recovering from surgery on a fractured sinus that he injured in Game 5 against the 76ers. He has been cleared to play with a protective mask, but he is expected to miss at least the first two games of the Celtics series. J.J. Redick is expected to start in his place.

Lee was injured by teammate Dwight Howard, but another one of the Magic center's wayward elbows almost proved more costly. He was suspended for Game 6 in the first round for hitting Philadelphia's Samuel Dalembert, leaving Howard back at his hotel room blogging and Tweeting while his teammates finished off the Sixers.

                      Pick: Over
