    Daily Sports Roundup

    Wednesday, April 29

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Nuggets can knock out the Hornets, the Hawks are locked up with the Heat, and the Royals send their ace to the mound.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The Nuggets can finish off the Hornets on Wednesday night in one of just two games on the NBA postseason slate. Denver demolished New Orleans 121-63 on the road on Monday night to take a commanding 3-1 lead in that best-of-seven Western Conference series. Carmelo Anthony led the way with 26 points for the Nuggets in that victory, while Chauncey Billups picked up 17 points and eight assists. Chris Paul was held to just four points for the Hornets on that day.

The other matchup on tap for Wednesday has Miami at Atlanta, with the Heat and Hawks knotted up at two games apiece in that Eastern Conference series. Atlanta came out on top in Game 4 on the road on Monday night, getting a team-high 15 points from Mike Bibby in an 81-71 victory. Joe Johnson added 14 points for the Hawks in the win, while Josh Smith had 13 points and seven boards. Dwyane Wade picked up 22 points for the Heat, and Jermaine O'Neal scored 20.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

Red-hot righthander Zack Greinke will be looking to keep his spotless stats line intact on Wednesday night when his Royals play host to the Blue Jays. Greinke is 4-0 already on the season, and he's yet to give up an earned run through 29 innings of work (fanning 36 and walking just six). The Blue Jays will counter Greinke with lefthander Brian Tallet, who is 1-0 with a 2.95 ERA so far this year.

There are six other games on the American League schedule for Wednesday including matinee matchups between the Angels and Orioles in Baltimore, and the Mariners and White Sox in Chicago. As well, it'll be the Yankees at Detroit, Boston at Cleveland, Oakland at Texas, and Tampa Bay at Minnesota. Rays lefthanded starter Scott Kazmir is 3-1 with a 3.97 ERA to date after four outings.

Making up the National League slate for Wednesday: Pittsburgh at Milwaukee, Florida at the Mets, San Diego at Colorado, the Cubs at Arizona, Washington at Philadelphia, St. Louis at Atlanta, Houston at Cincinnati, and the Dodgers at San Francisco. The Giants will send ace righthander Tim Lincecum to the mound in that last contest; Lincecum has a 1-1 record with a 2.96 ERA over his four starts.

      Six-pack for Wednesday

Sporting News did a study of the NFL Drafts from 2004-08; here are some of their findings......

-- Tennessee Titans had 51 picks in those drafts, more than any of the teams, yet still came up with only seven starting players.

-- Of the 44 Cincinnati draft picks from 2004-8, 17 (38.6%) aren't in the NFL anymore; thats three more than any other team.

-- There are 13 ex-Buccaneers on other teams; the most draft picks of any team to still be in the league with other franchises.

-- Giants had only 33 draft picks, least in NFL, but only four of the 33 are out of the NFL, also the lowest figure in the league.

-- Lions (five starters/36 picks), Vikings (5/34) drafted least amount of starters in those five drafts.

-- San Diego drafted 14 of its starters, more than any other team.

      ----------------------------------------------------------------------

      Late Night Update

-- Reliever Javier Lopez dropped a throw at first, allowing winning run to score, as Indians overcame 5-1 deficit and beat Boston 9-8, ending the Red Sox' 11-game winning streak.

-- Carolina scored twice in last 1:20 to upset the Devils in Jersey; Washington scored with 4:59 left to oust the Rangers 2-1 in a pair of NHL Game 7's.

-- Celtics beat Chicago in OT, the third overtime game out of five in that series; Dallas put the Spurs out of their misery, winning by 13, while Orlando grabbed a 3-2 series lead over Philly, and the Blazers stayed alive, beating Houston at home, forcing Game 6 in Texas.

-- Ethier doubled, Kemp tripled in ninth inning as Dodgers won 5-3 in San Francisco. Both runs Sanchez allowed were unearned.

Wednesday's List of 13: Tale of the Tape: MLB vs the NFL

Bud Selig still likes to refer to baseball as our national pastime, but in reality, the NFL is our most popular sport. Hell, the NFL Draft gets a ton of publicity; lets take a look at the Tale of the Tape........

      Item: Salary cap
MLB-- Refuses to use one, creating competitive imbalance.
NFL-- Has had one for years, creating unpredictable exciting sport.
Edge-- NFL-- Ask the people in Pittsburgh what they like better.

      Item: Pay-pre-view package
NFL-- Available only if you have DirecTV and are in treeless area.
MLB-- Available to all cable customers, though it has flaws too.
Edge-- MLB-- Don't get me started on the Saturday afternoon part of the MLB package-- at least I can get Extra Innings with digital cable.

      Item: Coaches' attire
NFL-- Golf shirt, pullovers, mock turtlenecks.
MLB-- Think Tommy Lasorda in doubleknits.
Edge-- NFL-- Plus, they get nitwits like me to buy the stuff coaches are wearing on the sidelines, increasing their already-huge profits.

      Item: Helmets
NFL-- QBs' and one defensive player's helmet have a radio in them; some have eye visors, all of them have facemasks.
MLB-- Most have only one earflap; they look like bowling balls.
Edge-- MLB. Anything that looks like a bowling ball wins here.

      Item: Cheerleaders
NFL-- They don't lead cheers, they pose for cameras while dressed like hookers, and we mean that in the finest possible way.
MLB-- Some teams have them, but they just get in the way.
Edge-- NFL. Never did figure out why cheerleaders smile even when their team is getting crushed; maybe its because they're oblivious.....

      Item: Length of schedule
NFL-- 16 games, with one Sunday off out of seventeen.
MLB-- 162 games in 182 days, with three days off in middle.
Edge-- MLB. The daily routine of baseball is its strongest point.

      Item: Foul weather procedures
NFL-- They play in everything but lightning storms.
MLB-- They put a tarp on the field when it rains.
Edge-- NFL. Bad weather games actually get better TV ratings.

      Item: Opening Day
NFL-- I'm usually bleary-eyed for 1:00 games after watching college football for fourteen hours the day before.
MLB-- Symbolizes the end of winter, the start of spring/summer.
Edge-- MLB-- There's still something special about Opening Day.

      Item: Oldest, most famous stadiums......
NFL-- Lambeau Field-- Frozen tundra, home of Vince Lombardi
MLB-- Wrigley Field-- Ivy-covered walls-- no champs since 1908
Edge-- NFL, Bears used to play at Wrigley, Patriots at Fenway.

Item: New Jersey, the Garden State
NFL-- Jets, Giants play there but don't admit it, calling themselves "New York". Both have training camp at state universities in NY.
MLB-- Only minor league baseball is played in New Jersey.
Edge-- MLB. If you play in the state, call yourself "New Jersey".

      Item: Players playing through pain
NFL-- Jack Youngblood played in Super Bowl with a broken leg.
MLB-- Rocco Baldelli missed 500 days with a tweaked hamstring.
Edge-- Pain builds character. Guaranteed contracts create wimps.

      Item: Minor leagues
NFL-- Unless Arena League comes back, football is without one.
MLB-- As Bill Murray once said, "What this world needs are less mental hospitals and more minor league baseball."
Edge-- MLB. Owning a minor league team is a terrific investment.

      Item: Commissioner
NFL-- Roger Goodell is the son of a US Senator.
MLB-- Bud Selig is a used car dealer from Milwaukee.
Edge-- NFL; used car dealers are actually less trustworthy than the lawyers of this world, and that's saying something.

        Len’s Top Five

        Wednesday, April 29

        Len's Top 5

Happy Wednesday everyone, here's my Top 5 for April 29, 2009 from len berman sports

        1. Quick Hits

Yankees slash some high end ticket prices, and give extra seats to expensive season ticket holders. I guess it's better than hiring vagrants to be seat-fillers.
Mr. Aprils. There are 5 NBA and NHL teams in the New York City area. All have been eliminated before May. The Rangers and Devils both losing game 7s last night.
The San Antonio Spurs were ousted from the NBA playoffs in 5 games by Dallas.
Florida high school pitcher Patrick Schuster yielded a double in the third inning yesterday thus ending his hopes for a 5th straight no-hitter. His team lost the playoff game.
Here's how to get publicity. The Albany Firebirds offered Michael Vick a contract. They're a minor league Arena Football League team.
The gimmick worked. They got mentioned in the Top 5.

        2. Return of the Conquering Hero

Barry Bonds surfaced at the Giants game the other night. The crowd gave him a big ovation and he spent some time in the radio booth. The scene will not be repeated anywhere else on earth. He says he's not retired. And during that radio appearance I'm sure they asked him about..... nah!
(I wrote that last line on Twitter... and Tweeter Joe suggested, swine flu?)

        3. One Step ahead of the Law

The IOC has found 6 more drug cheaters from Beijing, two of them won medals. How come? They keep samples for 8 years and can test for new stuff that they figure out the cheaters might have used. So now we find out about CERA, an endurance booster. The IOC won't identify the cheaters, but answers only stimulate more questions. What other illegal drugs were being used? Will we ever find out about them? Is anything clean?

        4. College Requirements

Now that the NFL draft is over, it's never too early to start thinking about future drafts. Ole Miss has a 340 pound defensive tackle named Jerrell Powe. How well can he read what the other team's offense is doing? Well apparently he can't read, period. When police tried to give him a citation for a noise violation he told the cop he couldn't sign the citation because he doesn't know how to read. His coach says he was joking. Others aren't sure. What's this world coming to? It's hard enough playing football in college, ya have to know how to read too?

        5. Athlete of the Week

Alan Perrin did something I'm sure I'll never do. A hole in one. He used a 7 iron from 160 yards. Alan retired from the British Marines after a horrible training accident. He is blind in one eye, and can't use one arm. Yup, that was a one-eyed, one-armed ace!

        Today's Birthday: Andre Agassi. 39.
Bonus Birthday: Actress Uma Thurman. 39.
Another Bonus Birthday: Jerry Seinfeld. 55.

Today in Sports: That poor skier goes splat. The debut of ABC's Wide World of Sports: 1961.

                Wednesday, April 29

                First round, NBA playoffs

None of the four Miami-Atlanta games has been close; teams are 1-1 in each arena-- Heat scored 64-71 points in two losses, 108-107 in the two wins-- they shot under 38% in both losses (8-39 from arc), 56-47% in wins (27-49). Atlanta had 18 shots blocked in its two losses, only eight in its wins. Three of four series games stayed under the total.

Denver won 17 of last 20 games, crushing Hornets 121-63 in last game, tying an NBA record for most onesided playoff loss. New Orleans lost nine of last 12 games- whatever they have left in the tank you'll get here, but after losing by 58 it might not be much. Nuggets won the first two series gamea at home, 113-84/108-93, making 20-37 from arc, shooting 50%+ in both games. Hornets had 26 turnovers in Game 4 humiliation.

New Orleans Hornets at Denver Nuggets [TNT | 10:35 PM ET]

Hornets: New Orleans' 58-point Game 4 loss matched the most lopsided loss in NBA playoff history. "The pressure is on them to close us out," Hornets All-Star David West said. "We have to go up there with the mind-set that we have to do everything in our power to keep the game close." Like they did in Game 3, which they won by two points. The banged-up and browbeaten Hornets scrapped their practice plans Tuesday. The Hornets dropped the first two games in this series in Denver by 29 and 15 points. Both of those games went over the posted total.

The Hornets are 0-5 ATS in the last 5 meetings.
The Hornets are 7-20 ATS in their last 27 games as a road underdog.

Key Injuries - G Chris Paul (back) is PROBABLE.

                    PROJECTED SCORE: 91

Nuggets (-10.5, O/U 197.5): Chris Andersen said the Nuggets have already put their big 121-63 win in the rearview mirror. "It's a new game. It's 0-0," he said. "Even though we're not facing elimination, we got to kind of act like it," Chauncey Billups suggested. "It's a hard game because the team that you're facing knows that they have to do every single thing that they can to try to stay alive," Billups said. "And any time you're in a desperate situation, it's a dangerous situation." Denver stifled Chris Paul (4 points, 6 assists) with double teams that led to 6 turnovers. Karl said he won't change his strategy much for Game 5.

The Under is 21-6 in the Nuggets' last 27 Conference Quarterfinals games.
The Nuggets are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games as a favorite.

                    Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 101 (UNDER - Total Play of the Day)

Miami Heat at Atlanta Hawks (-5.5, 180)

Thankfully for the Atlanta Hawks, the franchise appears to have the memory of a goldfish.

Just a day removed from a near 30-point beating in Game 3, the Hawks washed their hands of a poor defense performance and locked the Heat down for just 71 points on 38 percent shooting.

More notably, Atlanta contained Miami guard Dwyane Wade to 22 points on 9-of-26 shooting including a 1-for-9 count from behind the arc. The gritty effort evened the first round series at 2-2 and now heads back to Atlanta for Game 5 Wednesday.

“We played defense like we did in Game 1,” forward Josh Smith told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “We just got after them the whole game. We took control of the game from the tip and we had to do that to get the fans out of it early. Fighting through adversity shows the character of this team. That was a big win for us.”

The win didn’t come without a price. Many players were dinged up in the grueling defensive struggle including perimeter threat Joe Johnson, who hurt his right foot and was seen getting treatment on the injury after the game.

Johnson has struggled to find his stroke in the first round of the playoffs. He’s averaging under 14 points in the series after putting up more than 20 points per game in the regular season. Johnson is just 2-for-9 from 3-point range and hasn’t hit a triple in the past two games.

                      Pick: Under 180

New Orleans Hornets at Denver Nuggets (-10.5, 197.5)

The Denver Nuggets took 15 years of first-round frustrations out on the Hornets Monday, by way of a 58-point blowout.

The Nuggets scored 121 points on nearly 57 percent shooting and cashed in 10-of-20 3-point attempts. All but one player got on the score sheet and seven of those guys notched double figures including Carmelo Anthony, who scored 26 points in 36 minutes.

"It's a focus thing," guard Chauncey Billups told the Denver Post. "I think the guys have been extremely focused at the start of games and the start of halves, knowing that the first five minutes of the first and third are vital to the outcome.

"You let teams make a run in those early parts of the game and it has a huge effect. We talk a lot about that."

If suffering an NBA-record stomping in front of their home fans wasn’t enough, the Hornets must now return to Denver where they lost the first two games of this series. New Orleans was outscored 221-182 in those contests.

                      Pick: Denver -10.5
