    Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Streaking

    Ted Lilly, Chicago Cubs

Lilly's has taken off with the North Siders. He's gone from a middle of the rotation arm to ace-like material in two years and change.

Lilly hasn't allowed an earned run in his last 13 2-3 innings dropping his 2009 ERA to 2.41. The lefty is holding batters to a .229 average and he's owns a 13-2 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

Dating back to last season, the Cubs are 6-1 and the under is 4-2 in Lilly's last six starts.

    Braden Looper, Milwaukee Brewers

The reliever turned starter is enjoying a fine start to his first season with the Brewers. He's 2-0 (Milwaukee has won all three of his starts this season) with a miniscule 2.14 ERA.

Looper hasn't gone past the sixth inning and opponents are still hitting a healthy .343 off the right-hander.

    Slumping

    Scott Baker, Minnesota Twins

Wasn't this guy supposed to be Minny's ace?

Baker hasn't followed up his breakout 2008 season the way he would have hoped.

The righty hasn't made it past the fourth inning and has allowed six earned runs in each of his two starts this season.

The Twins lost both those games with the over paying both times as well.

The fireballer's ERA is north of 12.00, only has five strikeouts batters are unloading on him. Opponents are hitting over .400 against Baker and have taken him yard seven times already.

    CC Sabathia, New York Yankees

CC hasn't been terrible, but definitely not up to the expectations that come with his $161 million contract.

The hefty lefty has been struggling to find his control all year. He's walked 14 batters in under 25 innings. The Yanks are 2-2 with Sabathia on the bump, but he's been a -200 or higher favorite in three of his four starts.

St. Louis Cardinals at Atlanta Braves [ESPN | 7:10 PM ET]

Cardinals: Joel Pineiro has a new pitch in 2009, the sinker. At one point during his last start, Pineiro retired 13 consecutive hitters, with 10 outs coming on ground balls. "I'm going to trust it all year," said Pineiro. "The first three to four pitches, if you get them to put the ball in play, your pitch count is going to be low. So I'll keep on riding that as long as I can." Pineiro, though, is 0-1 with an 8.44 ERA and a save in five games - two starts - against Atlanta. He didn't fare too well in his last start against them on July 31, allowing six runs and 10 hits in six innings of a 9-4 loss at Turner Field.

The Cardinals are 7-2 in the last 9 meetings.
The Over is 5-0 in the Cardinals' last 5 road games.

Key Injuries - 3B Troy Glaus (shoulder) is on the 15-day DL.

            PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Braves (-145, O/U 9): The Braves return home for a six-game homestand seeking an end to a three-game slide there. Jair Jurrjens didn't factor in the decision of Wednesday's 1-0 win at Washington after scattering six hits in 7 2-3 innings. Jurrjens also limited Pittsburgh to one run and four hits while striking out seven in 6 2-3 innings of a 3-0 loss at Pittsburgh on April 17. "You can't pitch any better than that," Braves manager Bobby Cox said after the win over the Nationals. Jurrjens lost his only start against St. Louis on July 30, allowing three runs and seven hits in seven innings of a 7-2 defeat.

The Braves are 0-6 in their last 6 Monday games.

Key Injuries - C Brian McCann (eye) is on the 15-day DL.

PROJECTED SCORE: 6 (Side Play of the Day)

              -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Utah Jazz at Los Angeles Lakers [TNT | 10:35 PM ET]

Jazz: Carlos Boozer said, "I believe that if we - 1 through 15 - come with it defensively and share the ball offensively like we usually do, we'll have a chance to win the game. We just have to come with the mentality that we have nothing to lose. It's all or nothing." Deron Williams said, "We've just got to show some heart and some toughness and come out and give ourselves a shot to win the basketball game... The series is not over. We've still got a little hope. We know it's going to be tough to win three in a row against these guys, but we should be playing free and loose because nobody expects us to win."

The Jazz are 2-14 ATS in their last 16 games as a road underdog.
The Over is 9-0 in the Jazz's last 9 road games.

              Key Injuries - NONE

              PROJECTED SCORE: 101

Lakers (-12.5, O/U 211): "You come out really aggressive, don't give them any life, any hope," Pau Gasol said. "Really start hard, set the tone early. Control the game. Make the game yours. That's what we're going to try to do. We're going to try to close the series and move on." Kobe said, "(In Game 3) I was operating in a space where it was harder for them to double-team me. I wasn't 30 feet from the basket. I was getting good screens, getting the ball in the deep post position and operating from there. I'm going to continue to be aggressive," he said. "If they trap and double-team, then I'll give my guys the ball that way."

The Over is 12-2 in the last 14 meetings in Los Angeles.
The Lakers are 7-2 ATS in their last 9 Conference Quarterfinals games.

              Key Injuries - NONE

                            Monday, April 27

                            Len's Top 5

Happy Monday everyone, here's my Top 5 for April 27, 2009 from len berman sports

                            1. Quick Hits

Red Sox run circles around the Yankees while sweeping them in Boston. Jacoby Ellsbury steals home. Boston has won 10 straight.
7 fans suffer minor injuries during a wild crash on the final lap at Talladega yesterday.
State secret. No word on Barack Obama's golf score yesterday playing his first round as President.
Number of the weekend, 95,722. The size of the record crowd to watch the spring football game at Ohio State. I think they like their football in Columbus.

                            2. What a Guy

Rangers coach John Tortorella threw a water bottle into the stands the other night in Washington and hit a lady in the head. He then tried to grab a stick to go after the fans, but he was restrained. Afterwards he was quite prickly with the media, refusing to answer questions about the incident. The NHL got prickly as well, suspending him for yesterday's game. Is this the kind of guy you want leading and fronting your hockey team? Oh wait. The Rangers are owned by the Dolans. Never mind.

                            3. It's Drafty in Here

Is there anything more predictable than NFL draft day quotes? "He's a strong guy who can lead us." (Lions) "We feel very good about picking this guy 29th." (Giants) "We were excited he was there." (Steelers) Just once I'd love to hear, "our guy probably won't make it, but we had to draft someone."

                            4. As American as....

You gotta be kidding. The NFL is talking with the city of London about possibly staging a Super Bowl over there. Yeah, it's not hard enough for football fans to score tickets for the big game, now they'd have to buy trans-Atlantic airfare? While we're at it, why don't we just stage the Kentucky Derby in Dubai?

                            5. Gotta Think about the Game

Word is that Red Sox pitcher Josh Beckett gave his girlfriend the heave-ho before the season because he wanted to "focus on baseball." Is that a euphemism for "he's just not that into you?" God I miss Sex and the City.

Today's Birthday: "The Iceman." NBA Hall of Famer George Gervin. 57.

Bonus Birthday: Actor Jack Klugman. 87.

Today in Sports: Heavyweight champ, 31-year old Rocky Marciano, retires from boxing with a 49-0 record. 1956.
