        Saturday, April 25

        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hot Lines: Saturday's best MLB bets
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Philadelphia Phillies at Florida Marlins (-140, 9.5)

A sweep in their most recent series took a little luster off the Florida Marlins' fast start, but it's safe to say the ninth inning of their opener against the Philadelphia Phillies ranks as the team's most disappointing moment thus far.

A seven-run Phillies' ninth ruined the Marlins' shutout attempt and cost them the game, and Florida will try to avoid a fifth straight loss Saturday as the teams continue their three-game set at Dolphin Stadium.

The Marlins (11-5) were the talk of baseball after rolling to 11 wins in 12 games - all against the NL East - but stumbled in their first series outside the division, getting swept in Pittsburgh.

Florida appeared to be on its way to getting back on track when the Phillies (7-8) came to town Friday, as it looked like Dan Uggla's first inning three-run homer would hold up. But seven three-hit innings from Josh Johnson were wasted by closer Matt Lindstrom, who allowed seven runs - including two homers - in the ninth to seal a 7-3 loss.

"It's a deflating feeling, especially for the guys that worked so hard the whole game, to come in there and blow it,'' Lindstrom said. "This is going to be a test for me."

The Marlins haven't lost five in a row since dropping eight straight from Aug. 15-22, 2007.

All three of Florida's starters with a sub-3.00 ERA are scheduled to pitch this weekend, and Saturday Chris Volstad (2-0, 2.76) will try to stop the slide.

Volstad was excellent in his first two starts, giving up two earned runs in 12 innings, but he wasn't sharp at Washington on Sunday. He allowed three runs and six hits but lasted just 4 1-3 innings largely because of a high pitch count, and left early in a game the Marlins won 7-4.

        Pick: Over 9.5

Seattle Mariners at Los Angeles Angels (-118, 9)

On Thursday night, the Los Angeles Angels started their seventh pitcher of the young season - matching their 2008 total.

With Anthony Ortega scheduled to make his major league debut, the Angels are expected to top that mark Saturday night.

The 23-year-old Venezuelan will try to get the Angels back on track as they continue their three-game home series with the Seattle Mariners, who are looking for their longest road win streak in three seasons.

Los Angeles has endured a tumultuous and tragedy-filled April beginning with the death of Nick Adenhart, who was killed along with two friends in a collision with a suspected drunken driver during the first week of the season.

After winning a franchise-record 100 games last season, the Angels (6-10) have struggled with injuries to starters Kelvim Escobar (right shoulder surgery), John Lackey (strained right forearm), Dustin Moseley (right elbow irritation), Darren Oliver (strained right tricep) and Ervin Santana (sprained right elbow). Star outfielder Vladimir Guerrero is also out with a torn pectoral muscle.

Ortega is 1-1 with a 9.88 ERA in three starts this season for Triple-A Salt Lake, but Los Angeles is hoping he can show the same stuff he had in his first season in the Pacific Coast League. The right-hander was 5-0 in six starts for Salt Lake with a 2.52 ERA in 2008 and was named the Angels' minor league pitcher of the year.

"Last year, he was opening up a lot of eyes to what he was doing," Los Angeles manager Mike Scioscia told the team's official Web site. "He certainly jumped up our depth chart. ... He's not the finished product, but we feel he's ready for the challenge."

Scioscia's team could use a strong pitching performance after allowing 25 runs over the last three games. The Angels offense, which had scored 10 runs in consecutive games, was kept mostly in check in Friday night's 8-3 loss to the Mariners.

Only one run came on a hit - Mike Napoli's home run - and the other two scored on an error and a groundout during a three-run fifth inning.

Seattle (11-6) has consecutive victories for the first time since a six-game win streak from April 9-15 and is searching for sixth straight road victories for the first time since June 24-July 14, 2006.

        Pick: Seattle +110

Saturday's List of 13: Random thoughts on Draft Day......

                            13) Mel Kiper Jr-- This is his weekend, but Sunday is his day- if we all did our jobs as well as Mr Kiper, this would be a better country.

                            12) MLB Network needs to find a Mel Kiper for the baseball draft in June-- harder job, considering how far-flung baseball prospects are.

                            11) Redskins must be a fun team to work for- they tried to trade for Jay Cutler, now they're rumored to be interested in Mike Shanahan as a head coach. Always good to alienate your most important people.

                            10) Arizona Diamondbacks scored two or less runs in 10 of first 16 games, and are 6-10-- Eric Byrnes has been a dud since he got paid.

                            9) Kentucky-UConn will play hoops in New York next December, in matchups of coaches who don't like each other too much. Other game on the twinbill is Georgia-St John's, in SEC-Big East challenge.

                            8) Bo Jackson is now on Board of Directors of a community-owned bank in Chicago. Talk about a guy who disappeared, but he is doing real well with his life. Good for him.

                            7) Cleveland's Mike Brown may have won Coach of the Year, but if Lebron James wakes up tomorrow and decides he doesn't want Mike Brown to be the Cavs' head coach anymore, Brown will be at Kinko's updating his resume by sundown. Thats how wacky the NBA is.

                            6) High drama in Boston Friday night, as Jason Bay takes Rivera over the wall to tie game with 9th-inning homer, then Youkilis hits a ball on the Mass Turnpike to win it in the 11th. Just your normal 4:21 of tension between two franchises the media is obsessed with.

                            5) Like the Pirates' black road jerseys-- might like 'em better if they had the Pirates' face on the front instead of a capital P, but still think they look sharp. I'm a fan of the dark-colored road jerseys, not gray.

                            4) People at ESPN's Baseball Tonight are sensitive to criticism from big league players that they have a NY/Boston bias-- notice they now stress how their program gives info on all thirty teams. Yeah, sure..

                            3) Rough start to season for Mike Cameron-- he hit a line drive off the head of a San Francisco pitcher, giving the guy three fractures to his face and a concussion, then Friday he drilled the Houston catcher Quintero on a play at the plate, knocking him out of the game.

                            2) Detroit Lions gave Matthew Stafford a 6-year deal with $41.7M guaranteed money-- good luck to them with that.

                            1) Not to date myself, but I remember blowing off college to watch the NFL Draft in the early 80's, when the draft was on a Tuesday in the afternoon. Its a much bigger event now, still lot of fun to watch.
