Ice Picks: NHL best bets

Boston Bruins at Montreal Canadiens (+115, 5.5)
The Canadiens are hoping a change of venue will bring some life to their game. Montreal leaves Boston the victim of a Game 2 butt whipping.
The Bruins used three power play goals to their advantage topping the Habs 5-1 Saturday night.
“The penalties, to me, seem to be legitimate calls by the referees, and we have enough to handle in our opponent than to injure ourselves by taking penalties or straying away from the plan that we have in place,” Montreal coach Bob Gainey told reporters.
Gainey made a number of changes to the lines on Saturday, but his biggest decision could be in goal. Carey Price was pulled before the start of the third period and Gainey said afterwards he wasn’t sure if Price would get the nod for Monday’s game.
Boston has gone on to win 24 of the 30 playoff series it took a 2-0 lead in, but one of those postseason collapses came against the club’s longtime rival. In 2004, the Canadiens fell behind 2-0 to the Baby Bears but won four in a row to take the series.
Pick: Habs
Washington Capitals at New York Rangers (+115, 5.5)
There is one reason the Caps are down 2-0 in their series with the Rangers: Goaltending.
In Game 1 Jose Theodore’s performance – if you can call it that – led to four New York goals on only 21 shots.
That problem was corrected in Game 2 when Simeon Varlamov took over between the pipes and stopped all but one of the 24 shots he faced.
Washington has outshot the Rangers 70-45 so far in this series but still heads to the Big Apple two losses away from the end of its season.
The Blue Shirts can thank Henrik Lundqvist for their series lead. The Caps threw everything but the kitchen sink at the Ranger netminder in the closing moments of Game 2 and still couldn’t light the red lamp.
“Third period, he was just outstanding,” New York coach John Tortorella told the Washington Times. “That’s a good offensive team we’re playing against. They’re a pretty good hockey club. Hank stood tall.”
Pick: Under
