Edwin Jackson baffled the Mariners again, allowing five hits while working into the eighth inning to help the Detroit Tigers beat Seattle 2-0. Jackson beat the Mariners twice last season and has a career ERA of 0.40 against Seattle.

SIZZLING

Jason Kubel had his second consecutive four-hit game for the Minnesota Twins in a 9-2 victory over Los Angeles. Kubel’s two-run double was the big hit in Minnesota’s five-run fifth. He also scored three runs a night after finishing off his cycle with a go-ahead grand slam in Minnesota’s 11-9 victory.

SWINGS

The Boston Red Sox won their third straight, 6-4 against Baltimore, after starting 2-6. The Orioles dropped their third consecutive game following a 6-2 start.

HOME SWEET HOME

Johan Santana breezed through seven innings in his first start at Citi Field, allowing five hits and striking out seven without issuing a walk in the Mets’ 1-0 win over Milwaukee. He never allowed a Brewers baserunner past first.

SIT AWHILE

Chicago Cubs outfielder Milton Bradley has been suspended two games for arguing balls and strikes and making contact with umpire Larry Vanover. The discipline stems from an outburst in Thursday’s loss to the St. Louis Cardinals. Bradley was caught looking at a called third strike with the bases loaded while pinch hitting in the sixth inning. He will appeal.

FOND FAREWELL

Thousands of fans filed into Citizens Bank Park to bid farewell to legendary broadcaster Harry Kalas, the voice of the Philadelphia Phillies. Many mourners wept as they passed by Kalas’ casket, located behind home plate. The Hall of Fame announcer known for his signature “Outta here!” home-run call, died Monday in Washington. He collapsed in the broadcast booth before a game against the Nationals. He was 73.

UNLUCKY LOSER

San Francisco starter Tim Lincecum pitched eight shutout innings and matched his career high with 13 strikeouts but remains winless in three starts this season. The Giants lost 2-0 to Arizona.

STICK AROUND SKIP

The Houston Astros exercised the option on manager Cecil Cooper’s contract for 2010. The Astros are off to a 3-7 start but general manager Ed Wade said picking up the option year was “a formality as far as I was concerned.” Cooper, who has a 104-98 record with Houston, won 86 games last season. That was a 14-game turnaround from the previous year, the second best in franchise history.

OUCH

The Washington Nationals placed center fielder Roger Bernadina on the 15-day disabled list because of a broken right ankle. Bernadina was injured making a difficult running catch on a ball hit by Florida’s Dan Uggla in the eighth inning of the Nationals’ 9-6, 11-inning loss to the Florida Marlins. Bernadina was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse on Wednesday, one day after Lastings Milledge was sent down to the Chiefs. … The Padres will place right-hander Walter Silver on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right forearm. Silva was injured batting in the second inning against the Mets on Monday. He collected his first major league hit in the at-bat.

Arizona’s Doug Davis scattered eight hits and struck out six while pitching out of trouble all afternoon to earn his first win since Aug. 29, 2008, 2-0 over the Giants.

The Toronto Blue Jays got a big effort by their bullpen in a 4-2, 12-inning victory against Oakland. Left-hander Brian Tallet got a spot start and allowed two runs—one earned—and four hits in 5 1-3 innings. Five relievers shut out the Athletics on one hit over the final 6 2-3. Jason Frasor earned a win by getting the final two outs in the top of the 12th.

REHABBING

Detroit Tigers right-hander Joel Zumaya pitched two innings of scoreless relief Saturday for the Toledo Mud Hens as he recovers from a sore shoulder. Zumaya allowed two hits, struck out one and threw 17 of 26 pitches for strikes in Toledo’s 3-1 victory over the Columbus Clippers. He has missed most of the past two seasons with finger and shoulder injuries.

NHL Playoffs

Penguins won eleven of last fourteen games overall, seven of last nine vs Flyers; they're 7-6 in last 13 games here. Pittsburgh scored two power play goals in 3:59 with a man advantage in Game 2, getting game-winner on power play in OT. Flyers are just 6-6 in last dozen home games; they're 2-8 on power play so far in series (10:35 with man advantage).

Carolina won ten of last thirteen games, salvaging split in Jersey with an OT goal- they outshot Devils 5-0 in OT. Hurricanes are 5-2 in last seven against the Devils. Six of last seven series games stayed under the total. Home team won seven of last nine games in series, with Devils losing last three visits to Raleigh. Devils won five of last seven games overall.

Vancouver is 25-9 in last 34 games, winning last four games by combined score of 7-1- their last six games stayed under the total. Canucks allowed one goal in first two series games; they split last six visits to St Louis. Blues had just 42 shots in first five periods of series, then had 14 in third period of Game 2, but they didn't light the lamp (1-11 on power play).

San Jose won six of last nine games against Anaheim, but lost 2-0 in the series opener, despite outshooting Anaheim 35-17; under is 6-1-1 in last eight series games. Sharks are 2-4 in last six games, five of their last six home games stayed under total. Ducks won 11 of last 14 games, with five of the last seven games going over the total.

Six-pack for Sunday

-- Road teams won three of four on first day of NBA playoffs.

-- Chicago's Rose scored 36 points, tying Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's record for most points scored in first playoff game; anytime you tie a record held by Kareem, its a very big deal.

-- Dallas upset the Ginobili-less Spurs in the Alamo, while Detroit predictably got crushed in Cleveland- they won 27 less games than the Cavaliers during the season.

-- Houston, coached by former Portland coach Adelman, whacked the Blazers by 27 in the Rose Garden, a shocking margin of victory.

-- Home side won three of four again in the NHL playoffs; Rangers stunned Caps 1-0 to grab surprising 2-0 series lead in DC. Visitors are just 4-11 so far in the Stanley Cup playoffs.

-- Richard Pitino is leaving Louisville, where he worked for his dad, to join Billy Donovan's staff at Florida. Sounds like when younger Pitino didn't get the Boston U job, they decided his resume needed some enhancement, so he goes off to join family friend Donovan.

Random thoughts on a soggy spring Sunday..........

13) They spent $1.5B, some of it my tax dollars, to re-create Coors Field in the Bronx-- brilliant!!!! Any ball hit in the air to rightfield is a home run, the field has been a joke for the first three days. Don't be making fun of the small parks in Philly or Cincinnati anymore-- this is the new hitters' paradise in the major leagues.

12) In a stretch of 13 innings (7th inning Thursday to 2nd inning on Saturday) Bronx pitchers allowed a 9-run and a 14-run inning. This is a team with a $200M payroll. Good gosh almighty.

11) Chien Ming Wang toteboard: Obviously he a physical problem-- he just didn't one day become a bad pitcher, but in three starts so far this season, Wang has faced 45 batters-- 27 of them scored.

10) Wang hit Victor Martinez with a pitch Saturday, but the umps missed it and the Indians never argued, because Wang was so awful that Martinez wanted to hit-- he swung at a 3-0 pitch, laced a single to rightfield, getting an RBI. You just never see that stuff in the bigs.

9) Citi Field appears to be a major pitchers' park, which could have implications, as far as how the Mets work the amateur draft. Figures if your home park is a pitchers' park, it won't be hard to recruit guys to come in as free agents to pitch, but might be hard to recruit hitters, so Mets may have to draft and develop their own position players.

8) When Johan Santana struck out 13 Marlins last Sunday and lost, despite not allowing an earned run, it was just the seventh time it has ever happened (13+ strikeouts-no earned runs-loss), with Pete Smith last pitcher to do it, 20 years ago.

7) Gary Sheffield is 25th player to hit 500 homers, but the first to hit his 500th for a team he had never homered for before.

6) Braves are 0-5 this week, outscored by a total of 34-8.

5) Jason Kendall started 149 games behind the plate for Milwaukee last year, the most by any big league catcher since 1982.

4) Marlins tied game with three runs in ninth, beat Washington again in 10 innings, are now 10-1. Unfortunately for the Fish, they will not be playing the Nationals 80 times this season, just 13 more.

3) Dodgers are on fire, winning their last seven games.

2) Kevin Kouzmanoff homered off Brad Lidge in ninth inning, as the Padres kept pace with LA with a dramatic 8-5 win in Philadelphia.

1) Best pitcher in the majors? Try Zack Greinke of the Royals, who are in first place; Greinke has a 34-inning scoreless streak going.
