          Wednesday, April 15

New York Yankees at Tampa Bay Rays [4:05 PM ET]

Yankees: This is the Yankees' last game on the road trip before the official opening of the new Yankee Stadium on Thursday. Andy Pettitte is 15-4 with a 3.63 ERA in his career against the Rays, including 8-2 with a 3.72 ERA in 12 starts at Tropicana Field. The lefty had a solid season debut Friday at Kansas City, yielding one run and three hits over seven innings to earn a 4-1 victory. “It means that for four days I’m going to be fairly in a good mood instead of being miserable and wanting to get back out there,” Pettitte said. “I’m just happy I could give us a good start. Hopefully we can get rolling and all of us will get going together.”

The Yankees are 3-9 in Pettitte's last 12 starts.
The Under is 24-9 in Pettitte's last 33 road starts.

Key Injuries - 3B Alex Rodriguez (hip) is on the 15-day DL.
LF/DH Johnny Damon (flu) is QUESTIONABLE.
RF Xavier Nady (elbow) is DOUBTFUL.

          PROJECTED SCORE: 4

Rays (-110, O/U 9.5 ): The Rays managed just two runs last night after scoring 15 to open the series. “You’re not going to score 10-plus runs every night,” Rays manager Joe Maddon said after his club received its championship rings Tuesday. Rays starter Andy Sonnanstine will try to bounce back from a bad first outing of 2009. The right-hander lasted 4 2-3 innings in Friday’s 5-4 loss at Baltimore, giving up five runs and eight hits. He is 2-1 with a 6.08 ERA in four career starts against the Yankees. In his only home start against the Yankees last season, Sonnanstine lasted just 3 1/3 innings and allowed seven earned runs on nine hits (three homers) in an 8-7 loss.

The Over is 5-0 in the last 5 meetings in Tampa Bay.
The Rays are 8-2 in Sonnanstine's last 10 home starts.

          Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 6 (Side Play of the Day)

San Diego Padres at New York Mets [ESPN2 | 7:10 PM ET]

Padres: The Padres are looking to extend their winning streak to six games for the first time since a seven-game run Sept. 14-20, 2007. Kevin Correia will likely need better support than he received in his season debut last Thursday against Los Angeles. He gave up three runs in six innings, but the Padres scored only one run for him and he didn’t get credit for a 4-3 victory. Correia is 0-2 in seven career appearances against the Mets, six of them in relief. However, he’s yielded only three earned runs to New York in 16 2-3 innings.

The Padres are 8-2 in the last 10 meetings.
The Padres are 1-8 in their last 9 games following an off day.

          Key Injuries - NONE

          PROJECTED SCORE: 5

Mets: (-185, O/U 9.5): “Right now it just seems like we’re a little off. We’re not playing a complete game,” said Mets third baseman David Wright. In his season debut, Oliver Perez allowed eight runs and five hits, including a homer, with five walks in 4 1-3 innings of an 8-6 loss at Cincinnati. Mets manager Jerry Manuel took solace in Perez’s seven strikeouts. “I was happy that we saw some glimpses of the old Ollie,” Manuel said. “I think he’ll be fine. There was enough there to say we should be OK.” Perez is 0-2 in his last three starts against the Padres, allowing 11 runs and 19 hits while walking seven batters and hitting three more with 14 strikeouts in 12 1-3 innings.

The Over is 7-1 in the last 8 meetings in New York.
The Over is 9-1-1 in Perez's last 11 starts overall.

          Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 6 (OVER - Total Play of the Day)

                  Daily Sports Roundup

                  Wednesday, April 15

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The NHL's postseason gets underway in four cities, and the NBA's regular season comes to a close with a 14-game slate.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

Final playoff-position jockeying will take place in the NBA on Wednesday night as 28 of the league's 30 teams hit the hardwood to close out the regular season. The defending-champion Celtics, though, won't be too concerned with their result against the conference-worst Wizards on Wednesday, as they're locked into the No. 2 slot in the East. The Celtics beat the Wiz 108-83 when they met January 2.

The East's top seed, the Cavaliers, will host the Sixers on Wednesday night, while No. 3 Orlando gets a visit from Charlotte, No. 4 Atlanta is in Memphis, and No. 5 Miami hosts Detroit. The Pistons, Sixers, and Bulls (who are at home against Toronto on Wednesday night) will be deciding their seeds for the playoffs.

The West's top gun, the Lakers, concluded their regular season on Tuesday against another playoff-bound club, the Jazz. After Los Angeles, though, there is a logjam in the West standings, with New Orleans at San Antonio, Houston at Dallas, and Denver at Portland to sort things out. Rounding out the NBA slate for Wednesday: New Jersey at New York, Sacramento at Minnesota, Milwaukee at Indiana, Oklahoma City at the Clippers, and then finally Golden State at Phoenix.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The struggling Yankees will give the ball to veteran Andy Pettitte on Wednesday night as they try to turn around their early-season fortunes. Pettitte sparkled in his season debut against the Royals last week, allowing just one earned run on three hits over seven innings in a victory. The lefthander will take on the Rays and righthander Andy Sonnanstine, who is 0-1 with a 9.64 ERA through one start.

Also on the American League schedule for Wednesday: the White Sox at Detroit, Cleveland at Kansas City, Boston at Oakland, Baltimore at Texas, Toronto at Minnesota, and the Angels at Seattle. Los Angeles probable starter Jered Weaver threw 6 2-3 scoreless innings in a win over the Red Sox last Friday night.

Over in the National League on Wednesday it'll be Colorado at the Cubs, St. Louis at Arizona, Houston at Pittsburgh, San Diego at the Mets, Florida at Atlanta, Cincinnati at Milwaukee, San Francisco at the Dodgers, and Philadelphia at Washington. The Nationals sit at 0-7 on the season heading into their game against the Phillies, with Shairon Martis (0-0, 9.00 ERA) slated to take the mound.

                  Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Eight teams begin their quest for the Stanley Cup on Wednesday night as both the Eastern Conference and Western Conference playoffs get underway. The East matchups have Philadelphia at Pittsburgh, the Rangers at Washington, and Carolina at New Jersey, while the lone West contest sees St. Louis at Vancouver.

The home teams for all four of those games are also favored to win their best-of-seven first-round series. The biggest chalk of the bunch are the Canucks, who opened at -255 to take care of the upstart Blues over the next two weeks; those teams split their four games this season. The Caps are pegged as big -250 favorites in the first round; they beat the Rangers in three of four games this year.

Meanwhile, the Penguins opened at -160 to get past the state-rival Flyers in their playoffs series; Sidney Crosby and company had success against Philadelphia this season, winning four of six meetings between the teams. Finally, the Devils are small -130 favorites to dispatch the Hurricanes; Carolina, however, had New Jersey's number this year, winning three of the four meetings between the clubs.
