    Daily Sports Roundup

    Monday, April 13

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Pistons host the Bulls in Detroit, the Hornets and Rockets clash in Houston, and the Orioles get ready for the Rangers.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

There are a dozen games on the NBA schedule for Monday night as the league enters the final week of its regular season. Among those games is a meeting between the Bulls and Pistons in Detroit, with both of those teams looking to avoid finishing in eighth place in the Eastern Conference and getting a date with LeBron James in the first round of the playoffs. Chicago beat Charlotte 113-106 on Saturday, and Detroit is coming off a 106-102 loss to Indiana that same night.

James and the Cavs will be on the road facing the Pacers on Monday, while it'll also be Toronto at Washington, Charlotte at New Jersey, Orlando at Milwaukee, Minnesota at Dallas, Sacramento at Denver, the Clippers at Utah, Memphis at Phoenix, Oklahoma City at Portland, San Antonio at Golden State, and New Orleans at Houston. The Hornets and Rockets last met on the hardwood back on March 16, with Houston rolling to a 95-84 win on the road as a 6-point underdog.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

Koji Uehara will get his second Major League start on Monday as the Orioles hit the road to take on the Rangers. The Japanese righthander impressed in his debut against the Yankees on Wednesday, allowing just one earned run on five hits over five innings in a 7-5 Baltimore victory. Countering Uehara for the Rangers will be Vicente Padilla; the righthander also grabbed a win in his first start of the year, giving up three earned runs in 5 2-3 innings versus the Indians.

Cleveland is at Kansas City and the Yankees play in Tampa Bay in other AL action on Monday. As well, it'll be the White Sox at Detroit, Toronto at Minnesota, and Boston at Oakland. The Red Sox will go with Jon Lester on Monday; he was knocked around for five runs over five innings by the Rays on Wednesday night.

Over in the National League the Giants will give the ball to Randy Johnson on Monday night in their game against the Dodgers; the Big Unit struck out seven in his San Francisco debut last week, but he also surrendered four earned runs over five innings in a loss to the Brewers. Rounding out the Senior Circuit slate: Houston at Pittsburgh, Colorado at the Cubs, Philadelphia at Washington, San Diego at the Mets, Cincinnati at Milwaukee, and then finally St. Louis at Arizona.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

The National Hockey League's regular season ended on Sunday night, with first-round playoff matchups beginning on Wednesday. Still in the hunt for the Stanley Cup from the Eastern Conference: Boston, Washington, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Carolina, the Rangers, and Montreal. Advancing to the playoffs in the Western Conference: San Jose, Detroit, Vancouver, Chicago, Calgary, Columbus, Anaheim, and St. Louis. Vegas oddsmakers have the Wings pegged as the 3/1 favorites to win the Cup this spring, followed by the Sharks at 7/2, the Bruins at 11/2, and both the Capitals and Devils at 6/1. The biggest longshot on that odds chart are the Blues, who are listed at 60/1 to claim the title.

      Six-pack for Monday

The top six free throw shooting teams in college basketball this past season—what’s going on in Utah, with three of top six teams?

      1) Southern Utah, 79.9%

      2) Wisconsin-Green Bay, 79.0%

      3) Utah, 78.5%

      4) Cal-Davis, 77.9%

      5) Utah Valley State, 77.6%

      6) Loyola, MD, 77.6%

      ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend........

      13) Kenny Perry has earned $28,808,705 in his golf career, a fabulous career, but every day he wakes up the rest of his life, he will think of April 12, 2009 and he'll cringe, at least for a second. He had two-shot lead with two holes to play at Augusta Sunday, but bogeyed three of the last four holes and lost in a playoff to Angel Cabrera. Tough day.

      12) In his career at Augusta, Perry is -3 on 17th hole, but he bogeyed it Sunday, which will gnaw at him, since he had just birdied 16 with maybe the shot of his career, a brilliant tee shot that put him square in the driver's seat. Unfortunately for Perry, he just didn't finish it.

      11) All in all, a strong day for golf, with Mickelson/Woods paired in the same group and combining to go -9 on the day-- they got a little more airtime than the leaders did, to the point that you wondered if CBS would show Eldrick and Lefty driving out of the parking lot.

      10) Time for me to vent a little-- I pay $169 a year for Extra Innings package on digital cable, which I love, except on Saturday afternoons, when my blood boils because I get blacked out of games due to FOX having exclusivity over the 4-7 pm window. If I'm paying extra, why in the name of Bowie Kuhn should I get blacked out of games?

      9) Worse yet, FOX had a game at 4:00 Saturday; three games started at 1:00, but none of them were on the Extra Innings package- why?? Fans who have Extra Innings package would be much better off if the FOX package didn't exist, and that doesn't make sense.

      8) As if the Angels haven't had a bad enough week, benches emptied in first inning of their game with Boston Sunday, after Josh Beckett dusted Bobby Abreu after Abreu had called time. By the time order had been restored, four Angels, including two coaches, and zero Red Sox had been tossed. Angels won the game 5-4.

      7) Texas led 4-0 after seven in Detroit, lost 6-4, one of those losses that paralyzes a team, since it instills that they never have game won because their bullpen sucks. Home team is now 6-0 in Ranger games.

      6) A's lost 1-0 to Seattle, but got brilliant pitching performance by young Cahill, who had no-hitter in 7th inning of his second big league start. Eric Bedard looks like he has regained his old form, as Seattle is off to a 5-2 start. A's wore those damn ugly black shirts/hats again, which irritates the hell out of me, but if they had won, not so much.

      5) Washington Nationals head into their home opener Monday as the only winless team in baseball, and with an outfield of Dunn-Milledge Kearns, one of the worst defensive outfields in majors. Washington has lot of space in its home park-- they need good outfielders.

      4) Evan Longoria still hasn't been in the major leagues for a full year, but he has already been in the All-Star Game, the World Series, and the World Baseball Classic. Pretty good start to a career.

      3) When Flyers blew third period lead and lost 4-3 at home Sunday to the Rangers, they blew home ice edge in first round of the playoffs that start this week. Penguins now have home ice in the first round.

      2) One other feat at Augusta that deserves mention is Dustin Johnson eagling consecutive holes, which rarely happens anywhere, especially in a major tournament. He still finished just -1.

      1) At the end of the day, Kenny Perry may have been sad, but he did take home a check for $660,000, and if that’s the worst day any of us ever had, it would be a hell of a life.

Pick ‘n’ Roll: NBA best bets
            -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oklahoma City Thunder at Portland Trail Blazers (-14, 194)

Simply making the playoffs would have been a step in the right direction for the young Portland Trail Blazers. A late surge, however, has set the bar higher for them.

The Blazers continue their battle for home-court advantage in the first round as they try for their ninth win in 10 games in a matchup with the Oklahoma City Thunder on Monday night.

Portland (52-28) has clinched its first postseason berth since the 2002-03 season with its highest win total since going 59-23 in 1999-2000.

The remarkable season for the youthful Blazers is a result of a roster overhaul in 2006. Brandon Roy and LaMarcus Aldridge - the team's top two scorers - were drafted that summer, and Portland also starts rookie forward Nicolas Batum while relying heavily on rookie reserves Rudy Fernandez and Greg Oden.

Despite their inexperience, the Blazers - who missed the playoffs with a .500 record last season - have established themselves as contenders in the deep Western Conference. By winning eight of nine, they've climbed from seventh place to tied for the third-best record in the conference.

Portland continued its rise with an 87-72 road win over the Los Angeles Clippers on Saturday night. The Blazers struggled early after pulling out a home win over the conference-best Los Angeles Lakers the previous night, but held off the Clippers for their fourth straight victory.

"We weren't sharp, but we kept fighting and we had some guys to step up in the second half and break it open. If I had a hat, I would tip it to our guys because they've just been gutting it out," coach Nate McMillan said.

"To pull out this game tonight after an emotional game in our building last night against the Lakers and just find a way to stay together and win was huge for us."

That was the fourth game in five nights for the Blazers, who hope to benefit from an off-day Sunday. McMillan said rest has been integral to his club's success down the stretch.

"We've worked on recovery all year long and giving guys days off and that has really come into play this last month," he said.

Oklahoma City, another of the NBA's youngest teams, was also off Sunday after playing four games in five days. The Thunder (22-58) went 1-3 in that stretch and have dropped 12 of 16.

Oklahoma City has also lost four straight at the Rose Garden, where the Blazers are 32-7 this season. Roy led six Portland players in double figures with 22 points in a 106-92 win over the Thunder on Feb. 11, the teams' first meeting at the Rose Garden.

            Pick: Thunder

Minnesota Timberwolves at Dallas Mavericks (-11.5, 202.5)

The Dallas Mavericks fell out of a tie for sixth place in the Western Conference with a loss in their last outing. They have to feel good about their chances of bouncing back with the Minnesota Timberwolves coming to town.

The Mavericks look to rebound from a loss to a team they're battling for playoff position by notching their 12th straight win over the Timberwolves on Monday night in Dallas.

Though Dallas (48-32) was the last team in the West playoff field to clinch its postseason berth, it can still finish as high as the No. 6 seed.

The Mavericks' chances of doing so, however, took a hit when they fell 102-92 at New Orleans on Sunday. After earning big home wins over Utah and the Hornets in its previous two games, Dallas faded down the stretch Sunday, getting outscored 33-23 in the fourth quarter.

Dirk Nowitzki had 29 points and 14 rebounds but was held to four points in the final period, and the Hornets outshot the Mavericks 55.6 percent to 42.5 percent overall.

"They started double-teaming me everywhere," Nowitzki said. "We've got to make some shots on the weak side and just 42 percent isn't good enough if we let them shoot 55."

The Mavericks are one game behind the sixth-place Hornets and one ahead of the eighth-place Jazz.

Dallas will try to get back on track by continuing its dominance over Minnesota, as the Mavericks' 11 consecutive wins in the series have come by an average of 12.3 points. They've won six straight over the Wolves (24-56) at home, where they've gone 30-5 since an 0-4 start to the season.

These teams met in Minneapolis two weeks ago, and Nowitzki led Dallas to a 108-88 victory with 23 points and 12 rebounds. Jason Terry added 21 points off the bench as the Mavericks shot 55.4 percent.

The Timberwolves could have a hard time putting up more of a fight this time around if their play in their last game is any indication. They were outscored 31-8 in the first quarter of a 110-97 loss to Phoenix on Saturday night.

"Just a terrible effort from start to finish," coach Kevin McHale said. "Hard to account for it. ... No bright spots. Nothing."

Minnesota had won four of its previous six but didn't look like a team determined to finish strong.

"It was real disappointing," rookie forward Kevin Love said. "We didn't show any energy, myself included. It was just one of those nights where nothing goes the right way, but we didn't make it go the right way for us."

            Pick: Over

                  -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Diego Padres at New York Mets (-200, 9)

The Mets look to bounce back from a disheartening loss to the Marlins on Sunday. New York wasted a masterful performance from ace Johan Santana.

The former Twin struck out 13 batters, walked one and didn’t give up an earned run over seven innings of work. But a two-out error by Dan Murphy was all the Marlins needed to safely reach home twice.

Florida’s Josh Johnson took care of the rest, pitching a complete game and retiring 15 straight at one point.

Don’t expect another dormant performance from New York’s offense. The heavy hitters in the lineup are all enjoying great success so far (David Wright, Carlos Delgado and Carlos Beltran are all hitting over .300).

Manager Jerry Manuel sends Mike Pelfrey to the mound after last week’s disappointing outing against the Cincinnati Reds. The six-foot-seven hurler surrendered four runs and four walks in just five innings.

The Padres’ lineup doesn’t have the same type of bite as Cincy’s. Expect the Mets to get to San Diego rookie Walter Silva early and Pelfrey to rebound with a solid outing.

                  Pick: Mets

Cleveland Indians at Kansas City Royals (-130, 8)

Two early-season streaks came to an end yesterday: The Indians picked up their first victory after coming up short in their first five games, and the Royals played over the total for the first time in six tries thanks to a six-run outburst in a winning effort against the Yankees.

Cleveland, picked by many to win the AL Central, still hasn’t gotten a quality start from its rotation after Anthony Reyes allowed four runs over six innings yesterday against the Jays. The Indians went on to win comfortably, 8-4, thanks to a three-run eighth inning.

Kansas City’s starting rotation, on the other hand, has been even better than expected. The top three of Gil Meche, Zack Greinke and Kyle Davies has a combined ERA of 1.67 with 28 strikeouts in 27 innings.

Look for a sharper start for Cleveland’s Fausto Carmona and another dominant showing from Greinke.

                  Pick: Under

                    BEEN A WHILE

Pittsburgh pulled off its first triple play in 16 years in the eighth inning of a 2-0 loss at Cincinnati. With Brandon Phillips on second base and Jay Bruce on first, Edwin Encarnacion hit a blooper into short left field that was easily caught by shortstop Jack Wilson. Phillips was out when Wilson threw to Freddy Sanchez at second. Sanchez then threw to first to complete the Pirates’ first triple play since Aug. 10, 1993, at St. Louis. It was the first time the Reds had hit into a triple play since April 21, 2007, against Philadelphia.

                    NICE CATCH

Reed Johnson leaped to rob Prince Fielder of a grand slam in the fifth inning of the Chicago Cubs’ 8-5 win over Milwaukee on Sunday night. Johnson, who entered to replace injured Milton Bradley in right field, timed a perfect jump to put his glove on the deep fly, and Fielder tipped his helmet to Johnson as he walked back to the dugout.

                    ON THE BOARD

Anthony Reyes pitched six innings and the Cleveland Indians beat the Toronto Blue Jays 8-4 to earn their first victory of the season. Travis Hafner and Mark DeRosa each hit a two-run homer and Trevor Crowe doubled in two runs for the Indians, who avoided their worst start in 95 years. Cleveland lost its first six games in 1914. Reyes gave up four runs and three hits.

                    CY UGH

Tim Lincecum had another rough outing, allowing four runs and a career-high 10 hits over 5 1-3 innings in the San Francisco Giants’ 6-1 loss to the San Diego Padres on Sunday. The reigning NL Cy Young Award winner tied his career low by lasting just three innings in last Monday’s season-opening 10-6 win over Milwaukee.

                    SLUMPING

Washington is the only winless team in the majors. The Nationals lost 8-5 to the Atlanta Braves to drop to 0-6. … St. Louis beat Houston 3-0 to complete a three-game sweep. The Astros have lost four in a row and are off to a 1-5 start while totaling 16 runs. … The Texas Rangers lost 6-4 to the Tigers and were swept in a three-game series at Detroit.

                    SPEAKING

“It’s the same approach as in batting practice. I try to hit every ball as far as I can.”—Pinch-hitter Matt Stairs after he connected for a tiebreaking two-run homer in the ninth inning of the Philadelphia Phillies’ 7-5 victory over the Colorado Rockies.

                    SPEAKING II

“That’s the first one I’ve seen in person. There was one when I was with the Dodgers, but I was in the bathroom. I came out and asked what happened, and they told me there was a triple play.”—Reds manager Dusty Baker after the Pittsburgh Pirates turned a triple play in the eighth inning of Cincinnati’s 2-0 victory.

San Diego Padres at New York Mets [ESPN | 7:10 PM ET]

Padres: Expected to be among the league’s worst teams this season, the Padres have surprised early by winning five of seven. “A lot of people out there don’t have high expectations for us,” pitcher Chris Young said. “It is a long season. We’ll temper the excitement. But I think it is good for us to get some confidence and really believe in ourselves.” Walter Silva looks to build off an effective major league debut for San Diego. The 32-year-old right-hander limited the Dodgers to 2 runs and 5 hits over 5 innings Wednesday before leaving without a decision in the Padres’ 5-2 loss.

The Padres are 3-9 in the last 12 meetings in New York.
The Padres are 15-44 in their last 59 games as a road underdog.

                          Key Injuries - NONE

                          PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Mets (-205, O/U 9): The Mets play the first meaningful game at Citi Field, their new $800 million home, tonight. “It has all the best new amenities you can put in a ballpark,” third baseman David Wright said. “That’s only going to help us. You feel comfortable, and guys start showing up a little earlier. You get more of that team chemistry. It’s going to make it a lot more fun coming to the ballpark every day.” Mike Pelfrey has been very good in two career starts against the Padres, going 1-0 with a 2.13 ERA. He held them to two runs over 6 2-3 innings in a 6-5 win at Shea on Aug. 5.

The Mets are 9-3 in Pelfrey's last 12 home starts.
The Over is 6-1 in the last 7 meetings in New York.

                          Key Injuries - NONE

Chicago Bulls at Detroit Pistons [7:35 PM ET]

Bulls: Chicago looks to clinch at least the seventh seed with its 12th win in 15 games. “We know we’re playing for more than just to make the playoffs,” said John Salmons. “We want to try to move up as far as we can.” Chicago can avoid the eighth seed and a first-round matchup with Cleveland with a victory over the Pistons. The Bulls also are still within reach of passing Philadelphia for the sixth seed and the right to open the playoffs against struggling Orlando. Winning on the road has not come easy for the Bulls, who have lost two straight and nine of 11 away from the United Center.

The Bulls are 7-0 ATS in the last 7 meetings.
The Over is 5-0 in the last 5 meetings in Detroit.

Key Injuries - F Luol Deng (13.8 ppg, 5.9 rpg, missed the last 19 games) is OUT (shin).

                            PROJECTED SCORE: 99

Pistons (-4, O/U 196.5): If the Pistons win this one and finish the regular season with the same record as the Bulls, Detroit will be seeded ahead of Chicago because it has a better conference record. That means avoiding a first-round matchup with Cleveland. Detroit is limping toward the postseason, having lost 10 of 16. Tayshaun Prince said, “The best-case scenario is we got in the playoffs, so hopefully we can go in there and do some damage. I don’t think being the eight-seed that we’re in a situation we can’t handle. Any situation would have been tough for us, the way we’ve been playing, the ups and downs we’ve had all season.”

The Pistons are 8-0 ATS in their last 8 Monday games.

Key Injuries - G Allen Iverson (17.5 ppg, missed the last 5 games) is OUT (back).

PROJECTED SCORE: 103 (OVER - Total Play of the Day)
