    Daily Sports Roundup

    Saturday, April 11

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Bulls try to fend off the Bobcats, the Yankees and Indians send out their aces, and The Masters starts its third round.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The Bulls will be looking to solidify their hold on an Eastern Conference playoff berth on Saturday night when they take on the upstart Bobcats in Chicago. Ben Gordon and Tyrus Thomas each poured in 24 points on Thursday night as the Bulls rolled to a big 113-99 win over the Sixers, with Derrick Rose adding 16 points and eight assists. Chicago, though, hasn't had much luck against Charlotte, as they lost to the Bobcats in their matchups in March and December.

The Pistons have been jockeying with the Bulls for playoff positioning in the East, and they'll be in Indiana on Saturday in one of the other six games on the NBA's schedule. Rounding out the slate: Phoenix at Minnesota, Oklahoma City at Milwaukee, Golden State at Utah, Portland at the Clippers, and Orlando at New Jersey. The Magic are trying to get ahead of the Celtics for the second seed in the East; they've managed to top the Nets in each of the teams' last four games.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

Cliff Lee and CC Sabathia will both be looking to bounce back from ugly outings on Saturday when they take to the mound. The Indians' Lee was rocked for seven earned runs in five innings by the Rangers on Monday, and he'll try to do better against the Blue Jays and Roy Halladay on Saturday afternoon. The Yankees' Sabathia surrendered six earned runs in 4 1-3 innings of work versus the Orioles on Monday, and he'll take on the Royals and starter Horacio Ramirez.

The other American League matchups for Saturday: Texas at Detroit, Seattle at Oakland, Boston at the Angels, Minnesota at the White Sox, and Tampa Bay at Baltimore. The full Saturday slate in the National League includes Pittsburgh at Cincinnati, Houston at St. Louis, the Mets at Florida, the Cubs at Milwaukee, Washington at Atlanta, Philadelphia at Colorado, the Dodgers at Arizona, and San Francisco at San Diego. Jake Peavy will make the start for the Padres; he allowed three earned runs in seven innings in a loss to the Dodgers on Monday.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

The Flyers, Hurricanes, and Penguins will continue their fight for home-ice advantage in the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs on Saturday. Those three teams each have 97 points on the season heading into play on Saturday, with Carolina playing in New Jersey, Philadelphia travelling to Long Island, and Pittsburgh going north to Montreal. The Flyers have two games left on their schedule, while the Canes and Pens end their regular season Saturday.

Overall there are 13 games on the National Hockey League's schedule for Saturday, with other matchups including Vancouver at Colorado, Boston at Buffalo, San Jose at Los Angeles, Ottawa at Toronto, Washington at Florida, Tampa Bay at Atlanta, Minnesota at Columbus, Anaheim at Phoenix, and Edmonton at Calgary. As well, rivals Chicago and Detroit will meet in Motown; the last time the Blackhawks got past the Red Wings was back on April 2, 2008.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

The third round of The Masters gets going on Saturday morning, with Chad Campbell and Kenny Perry tied for the lead at 9-under. Angel Cabrera sits a stroke back in third place, with Todd Hamilton at 6-under, and Tim Clark at 5-under. Tiger Woods shot an even-par 72 on Friday afternoon, putting him at 2-under for the tournament, while Phil Mickelson is tied for 11th at 4-under. Retief Goosen, Ernie Els, and Zach Johnson are several notables who missed the cut.

Pick ā€˜nā€™ Roll: NBA best bets
        -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Orlando Magic at New Jersey Nets (+5.5, 196)

A surprising loss their last time out may have left the Orlando Magic out of contention for the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference, meaning they likely won't have home-court advantage should they win their first-round playoff series.

Coach Stan Van Gundy, though, isn't even sure his slumping team will even get there to find out.

The Magic will try to work their way out of their offensive doldrums Saturday night in East Rutherford as they look for their fifth straight win over the New Jersey Nets, who may be without All-Star guard Devin Harris.

Orlando (58-21) was percentage points ahead of Boston for the No. 2 seed in the East at the beginning of the month, but its quickly lost its grip on home-court advantage in a potential second-round meeting with the Celtics.

The Magic have lost three of six to drop two games behind Boston with three to play, and the conference's fourth-highest scoring team is now officially mired in an offensive slump. Orlando was averaging 102.2 points after a 116-87 victory over Cleveland on April 3, but has scored just 86.8 points over their last four.

"We're playing awful basketball,'' Van Gundy said. "There's not going to be anything magical happening at the start of the playoffs. I've never been a big flip the switch guy. But that's what our guys are trying to do now.''

Van Gundy's club improved somewhat offensively Friday at home against the New York Knicks, but this time poor defense was the problem. The Magic gave up 100 points for the first time in nine games and fell 105-95 to the Knicks, their second home loss this month to an Eastern bottom-feeder.

"If we play the way we did these last two home games, there's not a team in the league we can win a series against," Van Gundy said.

Orlando is second in the league in 3-pointers attempted (26.4 per game) and fourth in percentage (38.2), but it's gone cold from beyond the arc lately. The Magic are hitting just 28.0 percent from long distance in their past four games, with Hedo Turkoglu (3-for-18) and Rashard Lewis (9-for-33) struggling the most.

        Pick: Under 196

Phoenix Suns at Minnesota Timberwolves (+2, 225.5)

The Phoenix Suns have three games left in their season, but based on their latest effort they seem ready for it to end sooner.

Set to miss the playoffs for the first time in five years, the visiting Suns look to bounce back and win the season series from the Minnesota Timberwolves on Saturday night.

Ninth in the Western Conference, Phoenix (43-36) was eliminated from playoff contention Wednesday when Dallas beat Utah to clinch the final playoff spot.

Playing in their first game since then, the Suns lacked effort Friday in a 106-89 loss at Memphis to snap their 10-game winning streak over the lowly Grizzlies. Jason Richardson and reserve Louis Amundson each had 13 points for Phoenix, which committed 22 turnovers.

"We were a little bit careless with the ball, and we have to learn from that," Richardson said. "Right now, the most important thing is to get these young guys to play and get ready for next year.''

The Suns, who posted their lowest-scoring effort since Alvin Gentry took over as interim coach Feb. 16, have lost five of eight since a six-game winning streak.

With home dates against Memphis and Golden State following this contest, the Suns have a favorable finishing stretch, but they'll have to play with more enthusiasm than they did Friday.

"These games really aren't meaning anything for us," said Richardson, who is averaging 25.2 points in his last five games versus Minnesota. "Even though we want to win them, just let (the reserves) go out and get some minutes.''

        Pick: Minnesota +2

Hot lines: Todayā€™s best MLB bets
            -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Texas Rangers at Detroit Tigers (-156, 10.5)

A lot of baseball gamblers bet over the 10-run total set for Fridayā€™s series opener between the Tigers and Rangers. And while the 15-2 finish made good on their wagers, bettors expected it would be the Rangers, not the Tigers, lighting up the scoreboard.

Texas was coming off a big-hitting series against the Cleveland Indians in which it totaled 29 runs in the three-game sweep. The Rangers must have left their lucky bats at home, recording two runs on six hits Friday.

Detroit, on the other hand, exploded for 15 runs on 14 hits with five of those hits coming off the bats of Magglio Ordonez and Miguel Cabrera. The three and four hitters combined for eight runs including a Grand Slam from Cabrera in the fourth inning.

"If we had a real good year last year, (Cabrera) would've been an MVP candidate," Detroit manager Jim Leyland told the media following the win. "He didn't even get mentioned. He's getting better and he's already one of the best players in the game."

The Tigers first baseman is on fire to start the year, going 8-for-13 (.615 BA) with two home runs and four RBI in the first four games of the schedule. Having Ordonez and Carlos Guillen bookend him in the order doesnā€™t hurt either.

Texas has now lost seven straight games in Detroit heading into the weekend and nine of the past 12 meetings with the Tigers.

            Pick: Detroit

Philadelphia Phillies at Colorado Rockies (-101, 10)

Blame it on a sore elbow or the thin Rocky Mountain air.

Whatever it was, it didnā€™t bode well for Cole Hamels and Phillies. The World Series MVP was rocked for seven earned runs on 11 hits in under four innings of work Friday.

The Rockies erupted for five runs in the third inning to stomp the defending champs 10-3 in their home opener at Coors Field. Colorado totaled 14 hits, picking up where it left off in the series finale with the Arizona Diamondbacks Wednesday. They knocked in nine runs on nine hits and beat up the D-backs bullpen, playing over the 10-run total set by oddsmakers. Colorado is now 1-3 over/under to begin the season.

The Phillies offense had a tough time catching up with Jason Marquisā€™ stuff, registering just two runs on five hits against the Rockies newest addition. However, this is a lineup that put 12 runs on the scoreboard in the series finale with the Atlanta Braves.

Philadelphia may be struggling to produce early in the year, but they still have one of the most dangerous lineups in the majors.

            Pick: Over

              SCOREBOARD

              Saturday, April 11

Boston at the Los Angeles Angels (4:10 p.m. EDT). Brad Penny, who overcame nagging injuries to win a spot in the rotation, makes his debut for the Red Sox.

              STARS

              Friday

-Miguel Cabrera, Tigers, had three hits including a grand slam and finished with six RBIs in a 15-2 rout of the Rangers.

-Kelly Johnson, Braves, had three hits including the winning RBI single in the 10th inning in a 6-5 victory over the Nationals.

-Emilio Bonifacio, Marlins, had three hits and scored three runs, the last the game-winner in the ninth inning of a 5-4 victory over the Mets.

-Andy Pettitte, Yankees, gave up one run and three hits over seven innings, striking out six with only one walk in a 4-1 victory over the Roayls.

-Justin Morneau, Twins, went 2-for-5 with a homer and four RBIs in a 12-5 trouncing of the struggling White Sox.

-Evan Longoria, Rays, hit a pair of home runs and finished with three RBIs in a 5-4 loss to the Orioles.

-Adam Lind, Blue Jays, drove in four runs with two doubles and a homer in a 13-7 win over the Indians.

              SO LONG, NICK

The grief-stricken Los Angeles Angels, still mourning the shocking death of rookie pitcher Nick Adenhart, beat Boston 6-3 behind Jered Weaver's fine pitching performance. The 22-year-old Adenhart and two of his friends were killed when their car was broadsided early Thursday in a crash caused by a suspected drunk driver who was charged with three counts of murder Friday. The Angels honored Adenhart, Courtney Stewart and Henry Pearson with a moment of silence before the game as the team returned to baseball after postponing Thursday's scheduled game against Oakland. Weaver reached down with his finger and etched Adenhart's initials in the dirt on the mound, then allowed only an unearned run in 6 2-3 innings. The Angels wore No. 34 patches, which will remain on their home and road jerseys throughout the season.

              EMILI-WHO?

Emilio Bonifacio is quickly making a name for himself with the Marlins. He went 3-for-5 for his fourth consecutive multi-hit game, hiking his average to .579 (11-for-19). The former Washington Nationals player scored three times and has nine runs this season.

              THE NEW K

Kansas City played the Yankees in the first game at the renovated Kauffman Stadium. One of the prettiest parks in the majors underwent a $250 million facelift, and the Royals christened it with a 30-minute pregame party. The familiar fountains are still there, as is the crown scoreboard. The results were awfully similar, too, a 4-1 loss to New York.

              HAPPY RETURNS

Joe Crede homered against his former team, making a triumphant return to Chicago in the Minnesota Twins' 12-5 victory over the White Sox. Just 3-for-16 in the first four games, Crede led off the second by driving a pitch from Jose Contreras into the left-field bullpen. He was hit by boos from a crowd that gave him a standing ovation when he stepped to the plate.

              SURPRISE SAVE

Cardinals reliever Kyle McClellan got up in the bullpen Friday night to throw what he thought would be a side session. A few minutes later he was called in to save his second career game, getting the final two outs against the Houston Astros after rookie reliever Jason Mott struggled again in the ninth. St. Louis won 5-3.

              LOVIN' THE NL

Jon Garland sure made everyone in Arizona forgot about that Randy Johnson guy. Signed in the offseason to replace the Big Unit, Garland allowed three runs on five hits in seven innings in his National League debut, a 9-4 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

              LONG NIGHT

Cleveland dropped to 0-4 for the first time since 1985, losing its home opener 13-7 to Toronto in a game that was delayed by rain for 3 hours, 47 minutes in the fifth inning. A sellout crowd of 42,473, which enjoyed the usual pomp and festivities of opening day under a gray sky, was reduced to about 500 for the final out, recorded 7 hours, 12 minutes after Indians rookie starter Scott Lewis threw his first pitch.

              FAMILIAR FACES

Sidney Ponson gave up four runs and six hits over six innings in his Royals debut, a 4-1 loss to the Yankees. Ponson made 15 starts for New York last year. ... Armando Galarraga struck out a career-high eight for Detroit in a 15-2 win over Texas, the team that traded him to the Tigers in February 2008. He allowed a run and five hits in seven innings. ... Mark Hendrickson won his Baltimore debut, yielding one run and six hits in 5 1-3 innings of a 5-4 victory over the AL champion Rays. 1917 - Babe Ruth beats the Yankees, pitching a three-hit, 10-3 win for the Red Sox in the opener. He is on the way to a 24-13 record and a league-leading 35 complete games in his best year as a pitcher.
1954 - To make room for promising rookie outfielder Wally Moon, the Cardinals trade longtime great Enos Slaughter to the Yankees. In what turns out to be a good deal for both teams, the Cardinals get center fielder Bill Virdon, pitcher Mel Wright, and outfielder Emil Tellinger in return. Virdon will become the N.L. Rookie of the Year in 1955, and Slaughter will help the Yankees win 103 games.

1959 - Don Drysdale hits his second Opening Day home run to become the first pitcher with two career home runs on Opening Day. Unfortunately, his home run is the only Dodgers score as he loses to the Cubs 6-1.

1990 - California's Mark Langston and Mike Witt combine to no-hit the Mariners 1-0 for the first combined no-hitter in the major leagues since 1976. It is Langston's first start for the Angels since signing as a free agent in the off-season.

                    Ice Picks: NHL best bets
                    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Bruins at Buffalo Sabres (-105, 5.5)

Despite being out of the playoff chase, the Sabres (40-32-9) join Southeast Division champion Washington as the only teams to beat Boston three times this season. Buffalo has a 3-2-0 lead in the season series, holding the high-scoring Bruins to two goals in each victory.

Plus, the Sabres have played well recently with wins in six of their last nine, including two straight.

Buffalo is coming off a 5-1 victory over Carolina on Thursday - a game that ended just before the New York Rangers' 2-1 win over Philadelphia eliminated the Sabres from postseason contention.

Ryan Miller lost his shutout bid with 28 seconds remaining but said missing out on that "wasn't as disappointing as losing the whole season in five minutes."

Jason Pominville scored twice as Buffalo snapped Carolina's nine-game winning streak.

"You get (the opportunities), and I think that makes a difference," Sabres coach Lindy Ruff said. "We've had those opportunities in the past, and haven't cashed in. But you get them, and you get them on the road, and you get a team down. We got the bounces tonight."

Miller is 14-5-4 with a 2.68 goals-against average versus Boston, including 10-1-2 with a 2.11 GAA at home and wins in both meetings at HSBC Arena this season.

Bruins winger Phil Kessel has a point in all five meetings with Buffalo, scoring four goals, and he's been hot lately with six goals and two assists in his last seven games. He's scored in the Bruins' last two contests after missing five with an undisclosed injury.

                    Pick: Buffalo -105

Ottawa Senators at Toronto Maple Leafs (-110, 6)

The Toronto Maple Leafs are in a playoff drought that is unprecedented in their history. Under Cory Clouston, the Ottawa Senators' play down the stretch suggests a postseason return next year is very possible.

Having improved since Clouston took over as coach, the Senators look to end their subpar season with a win when they face the Maple Leafs on Saturday night.

While Toronto (33-35-13) - one of the league's Original Six teams - will miss the playoffs for a franchise-record fourth straight season, Ottawa's run of 11 consecutive postseason appearances will come to an end.

The Senators (36-34-11), though, have changed their fortunes since Clouston was brought up from Binghamton of the AHL to take over after Craig Hartsburg was fired Feb. 2. Ottawa is 19-10-4 under Clouston, who became the team's coach on a full-time basis after signing a two-year contract Wednesday.

Though it will finish in 11th place in the Eastern Conference, Ottawa has plenty to look forward to heading into next season.

"We showed a lot of character battling back," Senators winger Jesse Winchester said.

Ottawa won a franchise-record nine straight home games before losing 3-2 to New Jersey in a shootout on Thursday night. The Senators played the Atlantic Division champion Devils tough after beating conference champ Boston and playoff-bound Philadelphia in their previous two home games.

Ottawa's winning streak at home included a 2-1 win over Toronto on March 9.

                    Pick: Ottawa -110

                          Guys,

I just noticed I posted yesterday's NBA Dunkel. Sorry!

I've been working 70+ hours a week for a month, now. I'm really tired and my powers of concentration are shot. Anything could happen in here today. Be on the lookout for screw-ups!
