Ice Picks: NHL best bets
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Buffalo Sabres at Carolina Hurricanes (N/A)
The Carolina Hurricanes hold the distinction of being the hottest team in the NHL heading into the postseason. Carolina has won nine straight games and has just one regulation loss in its past 16 games. Cam Ward has started 27 straight games for the Canes and has been rested just once in their last 45 contests.
The Hurricanes put an exclamation point on their home dominance with a 9-0 bare-butt spanking of the Islanders Tuesday night. Eric Staal recorded his fourth hat-trick of the season and believes the Canes are playing like a well oiled machine.
"When you're confident and doing the right things you are going to get good results and nights like tonight,” Staal told reporters.
The Canes are in a battle with Philadelphia for home ice in a series in which they will face each other.
"No matter who we play against we've got to get ready for the playoff," the Hurricanes' Anton Babchuk told the media, "and we need the points for home ice advantage."
The Sabres will be on the second half of back-to-back games after playing in Toronto Wednesday night. Carolina has taken two of three from the Sabres this season with the under sitting at 3-0 in the head-to-head matchup.
Pick: Carolina
New Jersey Devils at Ottawa Senators (-115, 5.5)
The New Jersey Devils hit rock bottom Tuesday. They were booed off the ice following a 4-1 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Devils have just three wins in their past ten games. In the seven losses the Devils managed to score just eight goals.
"I think we should be concerned as a team," Devils forward Brian Rolston told the press. "We have to be better and we know that. That's something we have to do in Ottawa."
The Senators, on the other hand, have been cruising on home ice to wrap up a disappointing season. A 3-2 win over Boston Tuesday night set a new franchise record for consecutive home wins at nine. A win over the Devils would make it a perfect 10 to wrap up the season at Scotia Bank.
New Jersey has owned Ottawa this year, winning all three head-to-head battles and has outscored the Senators 13-5 in the process.
Pick: Ottawa -115
