Josh Pastner would also be an excellent hire for the University of Memphis. Pastner, although only in Memphis for one year, made a tremendous impact on the University of Memphis’ recruiting class. Pastner helped assemble what would have been the top recruiting class in the history of the NCAA. He assisted in creating what would have been the top 3 prospects in the country coming to Memphis.

Additionally, he has been around great college bench coaches such as Lute Olsen and John Calipari. At Arizona, he won a NCAA Championship as a player and continued on as recruiter for the program where he annually brought in top rated classes.

During the past year at Memphis, he has won over high school coaches and AAU programs across the nation, while bringing in top talent. He is a relentless recruiter, rarely seen not talking on the phone. He is known for his non-stop work ethic on the recruiting trails, answering multiple phones while emailing potential signees.

Though Pastner doesn’t have the experience of being the head coach of a collegiate team, he has the experience and knowledge to lead a program. He, like Kellogg, would be able to secure the high profile Memphis talent, while also recruiting outward across the nation.

Pastner would be a great fit for the Memphis program. He is an intelligent, loyal and a diligent worker. Fans, media and booster would also support his hiring. He is well liked in the community and respected among his peers.

Either of these potential candidates would be excellent hires for the University of Memphis. Both have the ability to coach and recruit. Each could secure an excellent class for the coming year, as well as bring in top talent in the coming seasons. Additionally, both stand a chance to retain some of the previous staff, such as Coach John Robic. Each remains close enough to Coach Calipari to represent his ways that Memphians loved, but at the same time, they are different enough to begin a new era in Memphis.

Pastner is also said to have been in very good touch and on very good terms with John Wall, an unsigned, but Memphis leaning (prior to Calipari leaving) recruit.

He was a walk-on at Arizona under Lute Olsen (not much playing time) and stayed after graduation to coach where he proved to be a very good recruiter. Calipari hired him away from Arizona mostly because of his ability to recruit. A lot of the Arizona basketball alumnae were pushing his name to the Arizona AD the past week to offer him that job.

Don't know too much about him either, they said a few days ago they were considering him, started reading up on him. His recruiting and people skills seem to be the main reason for the hire. I think Memphis is trying to salvage recruits. There is not much talk about him being a "stellar" or even "above average" on the floor coach, which is what bothers me.

Oh well, that program is back to nothing. Be lucky to compete with the Tulsa's of the world.

Hopefully he can salvage ONE of Memphis' top three recruits.

We'll find out how successful this hire is 9 days from now. If he can keep that recruiting class largely intact, then it was a good move. If he misses out on most of those guys, then Memphis is in trouble.

If he can keep this class, then he doesn't need to know how to coach, these kids Memphis has, can straight shoot the rock!
