    Daily Sports Roundup

    Sunday, March 29

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The NCAA Tournament determines its last two Final Four teams, and the Sprint Cup Series takes to the track at Martinsville.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

San Antonio will be in New Orleans on Sunday night in just one of the notable matchups on the NBA schedule. The Spurs and Hornets last met on January 31, with San Antonio rolling to a 106-93 home win as a 7.5-point favorite. Tony Parker had 25 points for the Spurs in that contest, while Manu Ginobili picked up 22 points. Chris Paul had a big game for the Hornets with a game-high 38 points.

The other two marquee contests on the Sunday NBA slate are Dallas at Cleveland and the Lakers at Atlanta, while the Celtics will be gunning for an easy victory when they play host to Oklahoma City. Rounding out the schedule: New Jersey at Minnesota, Philadelphia at Detroit, Phoenix at Sacramento, and Washington at Indiana. The Wizards edged the Pacers 119-117 on February 8.

On the road to the Final Four . . .

It'll be No. 2 Michigan State vs. No. 1 Louisville at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis in the first of two Elite Eight matchups at the NCAA Tournament on Sunday afternoon. The Spartans came back to defeat No. 3 Kansas 67-62 in their Sweet 16 game on Friday night, with Goran Suton picking up 20 points. Top-seeded Louisville had an easier time with No. 12 Arizona, winning 103-64.

Meanwhile, No. 2 Oklahoma will take on No.1 North Carolina at FedExForum in Memphis later on Sunday to complete the Elite Eight. Blake Griffin poured in 30 points and grabbed 14 rebounds on Friday night to lead the Sooners to an 84-71 win over No. 3 Syracuse. The Tar Heels had no trouble with No. 4 Gonzaga, getting 24 points from Tyler HanXXXough as they rolled to a 98-77 victory Friday.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Two of the Eastern Conference's top clubs will hit the ice in Philadelphia on Sunday night when the Flyers host the Bruins. Those two teams met in Boston on March 3, with Philly pulling out a 4-2 road win. Simon Gagne scored twice for the Flyers in that victory, while Mike Knuble had a goal and two assists. Patrice Bergeron and Stephane Yelle had the markers for the Bruins in that losing cause.

Nashville will be in Detroit for one of the six other games on the NHL's schedule for Sunday, with St. Louis at Columbus, Ottawa at Tampa Bay, Vancouver at Chicago, Colorado at Anaheim, and Minnesota at Edmonton. The division rival Wild and Oilers both need to get some points on Sunday to stay in the th-ick of the Western playoff hunt. Minnesota blanked Edmonton 3-0 back on March 22.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

Jimmie Johnson and Kyle Busch are the 5/1 co-favorites to win Sunday's Sprint Cup Series event, the Goody's Fast Pain Relief 500 at Martinsville Speedway. Johnson has won four of the past five races at Martinsville, including the Goody's Cool Orange 500 in 2007. Denny Hamlin is the defending champion at the annual spring race at Martinsville, and he's next at 7/1 odds to win this weekend.

Mark Martin and Jeff Gordon are both sitting at 8/1 odds to visit victory lane at Martinsville. Gordon holds a 76-point lead on Kurt Busch in the current driver standings, and he's 79 points up on third-place Clint Bowyer. Kurt Busch is back at 15/1 odds to win on Sunday, where he's tied with Dale Earnhardt Jr., Matt Kenseth, and Tony Stewart. Bowyer is farther behind at 30/1 odds to get the win.

Sunday's List of 13: Making sense out of numbers.........

The guru of all baseball statistics is the great Bill James, so when the Bill James Gold Mine comes in the mail, its a big day. Here are some of the nuggets I found on my first take thru the 2009 Gold Mine.

      13) In a team sense, batting average is overrated stat; Atlanta Braves hit .270 as a team last year, but finished 70-90. Tampa Bay Rays hit .260, 21st in all of major leagues, but won an American League title.

      12) Kevin Slowey pitched 160 innings LY; because he is mainly a fly ball pitcher, only one batter all year reached base on an error.

      11) Kelly Johnson hit .391 when his plate appearance was less than four pitches, .186 when it lasted four or more pitches.

      10) Melvin Mora's 92 singles LY knocked in 41 runs; Ichiro Suzuki's 180 singles knocked in 17 Seattle teammates.

      9) Its no wonder the Orioles were terrible LY: they were -87 in runs scored, -49 stolen bases and -154 in walks.

      8) From 2002-08, Todd Helton fouled off 47% of pitches he swung at, most in the major leagues. It takes a dedicated human to keep tabs on obscure stats like that, but that is a lot of extra pitches the pitcher has to make when facing Helton and the Rockies.

      7) Speaking of Colorado, they were +12 in homers, + 55 in steals, but -75 in runs scored, and runs are the only thing that ultimately count.

      6) Cubs scored 56 more runs than any other National League team.

      5) The last two seasons, against pitchers with 3.50 or better ERA, so against the better pitchers, David Ortiz hit .193/.182.

      4) Cincinnati Reds started games terribly LY; they trailed 72 games after the second inning, led only 44. They're going to try and run in 2009, which is why they added Willy Taveras; it would be better if their pitchers gave up less home runs.

      3) White Sox hit 79 more HR's than they allowed, but were an awful 9-31 in games when they didn't hit a homer.

      2) Arizona was 44-23 LY when Webb/Haren started, 36-57 with all their other starters, including 0-7 with top prospect Scherzer.

      1) If you stopped every Cleveland game after the fifth tinning, Tribe would have been 83-62 (17 games were tied), yet Indians were just an 81-81 team at season's end, which is why they added Kerry Wood to close games for them this season.

Pick ‘n’ Roll: NBA best bets
              -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago Bulls at Toronto Raptors (-2, 209)

It's been a little over two years since the Chicago Bulls won five straight games. That happened to come during their last playoff season.

The surging Bulls hope to equal that winning streak and further solidify their playoff position Sunday when they visit the Toronto Raptors, who are looking for a season-high fourth straight win.

Chicago (36-38) beat Indiana 112-106 at home Saturday for its seventh victory in eight games. The Bulls are tied with Detroit for seventh place in the Eastern Conference.

The Bulls are trying for their first five-game winning streak since Dec. 11-19, 2006. Chicago made its most recent playoff appearance that season, losing to the Pistons in the second round.

The club's recent play on the road has helped their playoff push. The Bulls are 12-26 on the road, but hope to match a season high with their third consecutive win away from home. Chicago won three straight away from the United Center from Jan. 28-31.

The Bulls play consecutive games on the road before playing five of their last six at home.

While the Raptors (27-45) won 114-94 at Chicago on Jan. 23 in the teams' most recent contest, the Bulls avoided a third straight loss at Toronto with a 102-98 victory on Jan. 14.

Chicago didn't have John Salmons in either of those contests, and he could be the difference in this one.

Salmons scored 22 points and hit two late 3-pointers to help the Bulls beat Indiana. Salmons is averaging 20.3 points in 19 games since being acquired from Sacramento.

"The best trade of the year,'' Pacers coach Jim O'Brien said of the Bulls landing the underrated swingman.

Though Toronto will miss the playoffs for the first time in three seasons, it's won three in a row heading into the finale of a five-game homestand that opened with a 102-89 loss to Charlotte on March 20.

Though its last three victories have come against the Los Angeles Clippers, Milwaukee and the Thunder, Toronto is averaging 109.0 points while allowing 92.7 during that span.

              Pick: Over

San Antonio Spurs at New Orleans Hornets (+1, 178.5)

At this point in the season, the San Antonio Spurs are typically in sync and gearing up for the playoffs. That strategy was derailed as they were plagued by injuries, meaning the final 10 regular-season games will be vital for improving their chemistry.

After an easy win over one of the league's worst teams in the first game for San Antonio's Big Three since the All-Star break, the Southwest Division-leading Spurs expect a much tougher test Sunday night against a New Orleans Hornets club that's in the ***** of the Western Conference playoff race.

With Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili on the court together for the first time since a 91-89 loss at Toronto on Feb. 11, San Antonio (48-24) defeated the Los Angeles Clippers 111-98 on Friday. The game was not as close as the final score indicated, as the Spurs led by 27 in the third quarter when coach Gregg Popovich began to empty his bench.

San Antonio is seeking its second consecutive division title and seventh in nine years, an impressive feat considering Duncan, Parker and Ginobili have missed a combined 48 games.

Ginobili had 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting and added seven assists Friday after finishing with only two points on 1-of-7 shooting in Wednesday's 102-92 win at Atlanta - his first game since scoring 32 versus the Raptors.

"We're back, but we aren't back," said Ginobili, averaging 19.5 points on 51.9 percent shooting in two games versus the Hornets (44-27) this season. "These 10 games are going to be different than the previous ones we've had heading into the playoffs."

The Hornets have the league's fourth-best scoring defense (93.5), but they've allowed an average of 102.0 points in losing their last two.

New Orleans, which was eliminated by the Spurs in seven games in last season's conference semifinals, dropped 3 1/2 games back of San Antonio in the division with Friday's 103-93 loss at New York. The Hornets led 49-42 at halftime but things quickly fell apart as they were outscored 35-16 in the third quarter and hit with two technicals and an ejection in the fourth.

"I just think if we would have come out with that type of passion in the third quarter, then we would have won the game," said coach Byron Scott, adding it was a "terrible" loss for a team trying to make the playoffs.

              Pick: San Antonio

                    Sunday, March 29

                    NCAA tournament

First-ever Izzo-Pitino coaching matchup; Pitino is 32-4 against a lower-seeded opponent in this tournament, best mark of all the active coaches. Louisville won last 13 games, covering 10 of the 13- they lost 70-64 to Minnesota on neutral court, in only game vs Big 11 foe this year. State is 9-1 in last 10 games, 3-2 vs spread as an underdog- they were down 11 to Kansas early in game Friday, rallied to win despite shooting 39% for night. The #1 seed is 5-1 in regional finals this season and last.

North Carolina was simply too quick for Gonzaga, scoring 98 points on 11-19 shooting from arc, with only nine turnovers; we have pick on this game in box below. Oklahoma beat Syracuse because they got huge game (28 points) from Crocker; if Blake Griffin/HanXXXough cancel each other out, which side wins 4-on-4 game? Sooners will need huge game from its supporting cast to advance to Detroit- they're 1-2 as an underdog so far this season, losing at Texas/Missouri, beating Purdue on neutral floor.
