    Daily Sports Roundup

    Saturday, March 28

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: Pittsburgh, Villanova, UConn, and Missouri compete in the Elite Eight, and the Suns try to score a road victory against Utah.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The Suns will be in Utah to take on the Jazz on Saturday night in the top NBA matchup on the day's schedule. Phoenix's late playoff push was hit with a setback on Thursday with a 129-109 loss to Portland; Shaquille O'Neal picked up 20 points for the Suns in that loss. Phoenix, though, got past Utah 118-114 at home on Wednesday night, with Grant Hill leading the way with a 26-point game.

Chicago will host Indiana in the only matinee on the league's Saturday slate, while the evening will also feature Detroit at Washington, New York at Charlotte, Milwaukee at Miami, the Clippers at Houston, Golden State at Denver, and Memphis at Portland. The Trail Blazers got 29 points and 12 rebounds from LaMarcus Aldridge in their win over the Suns, and 26 points from Brandon Roy.

On the road to the Final Four . . .

It'll be Missouri vs. Connecticut and Villanova vs. Pittsburgh in the Elite Eight round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday. The No. 1 Huskies have been pegged as 5.5-point favorites in their matchup with the No. 3 Tigers at University of Phoenix Stadium, with that game's total set at 150 points. Connecticut cruised through the Sweet 16 round on Thursday night with a 72-60 win over Purdue. Missouri was an upset winner on Thursday, getting past No. 2 Memphis 102-91.

Over at TD Banknorth Garden on Saturday night the No. 2 Panthers will enter as 2-point favorites against the No. 3 Wildcats (with the total at 142.5). Pittsburgh outlasted No. 4 Xavier in a 60-55 win on Thursday night, getting 19 points from Sam Young in a game that they trailed 37-29 at halftime. Villanova impressed in a convincing 77-54 dismantling of No. 2 Duke on Thursday, as Scottie Reynolds had a team-high 16 points. Dante Cunningham had 14 points and 11 rebounds.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

An afternoon matchup between the Rangers and Penguins in Pittsburgh launches an 11-game slate in the National Hockey League on Saturday. Both New York and Pittsburgh are still in the hunt for fourth place in the Eastern Conference (and home-ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs) thanks to solid play of late. The Penguins are 7-1-2 in their past 10; the Rangers are 6-3-1.

The rest of the NHL's Saturday schedule will take place at night, and include Los Angeles at Nashville, Boston at Toronto, Ottawa at Atlanta, Philadelphia at the Islanders, Carolina at New Jersey, Buffalo at Montreal, Florida at Dallas, Columbus at St. Louis, Minnesota at Calgary, and Phoenix at San Jose. The Sharks are still neck-and-neck with the Wings for top spot in the West standings.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

Finally, the 2009 Formula 1 season gets underway this weekend with Sunday's Australian Grand Prix at Melbourne Grand Prix Circuit (with North American race fans catching the event in the wee hours on Sunday morning). Lewis Hamilton won this race last season, beating Nick Heidfeld across the finish line by 5.4 seconds. Nico Rosberg, Fernando Alonso, Heikki Kovalainen, Kazuki Nakajima, Sebastien Bourdais, and Kimi Raikkonen made up the rest of the race's top eight in '08, while Rubens Barrichello was disqualified from sixth due to a pit infraction.

Pick ā€˜nā€™ Roll: NBA best bets
        -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Indiana Pacers at Chicago Bulls (-8, 209.5)

Indiana (30-42) beat Miami 90-88 Wednesday, earning its 17th straight home win against the Heat. The Pacers have won two straight after losing their previous five, but they trail the Bulls and Pistons by 4 1/2 games with just 10 to play.

"We'll see what happens," Indiana forward Jeff Foster said. "Guys are still playing hungry and aggressively. And we've been playing some pretty good defense down the stretch."

Losing Troy Murphy down the stretch would all but end the Pacers' chances of making the playoffs for the first time in three years. Murphy sat out against the Heat because of a sprained ligament in his left knee, and his status for Saturday's game is uncertain.

Indiana coach Jim O'Brien said Murphy was hurt at a shootaround before Wednesday's game. The veteran big man is averaging 14.1 points and 11.8 rebounds.

Chicago point guard Derrick Rose, meanwhile, returned Thursday after missing a game due to a sprained right wrist, contributing nine points and seven assists in 30 minutes off the bench.

It's uncertain when Rose might regain his starting spot. Kirk Hinrich has been in the lineup the past two games, scoring a combined 39 points.

Tyrus Thomas has also been coming up big for the Bulls, posting double-doubles in four of his last five games. He had 15 points and 12 rebounds versus the Heat.

"My confidence has always been there," said Thomas, enjoying one of the best stretches of his three-year career.

If healthy, Murphy will match up with Thomas. Otherwise, the Pacers will probably give Foster another start.

Indiana will have to continue its recent stretch of tough defense if Murphy can't play.

The Pacers have held each of their last four opponents under 100 points, matching a season high. They limited Miami star Dwyane Wade, an MVP candidate, to 21 points - nearly nine below his average - on 5-for-24 shooting.

Indiana and Chicago have split two meetings this season. The Pacers have dropped 10 of their last 13 visits to the United Center.

        Pick: Under 209.5

Phoenix Suns at Utah Jazz (-8, 228.5)

Strong defensive play during a 13-game home winning streak has helped keep Utah in playoff position. That run won't last much longer if the Jazz can't put forth a better effort in transition.

The Jazz look to avenge a loss earlier this week to the high-scoring Phoenix Suns on Saturday night in a matchup of teams hoping to reach the playoffs.

Utah (44-27), seeking to keep pace with first-place Denver in the Northwest Division, will play five of its last 11 games at home. The Jazz will need to take advantage of off all of their remaining contests at Energy Solutions Arena as they try to climb up from seventh place in the Western Conference.

Utah is allowing just 90.8 points per game during its winning streak at home, allowing 100 points once during that span - a 113-109 win over the Los Angeles Lakers on Feb. 11.

Once again, the Jazz will be thoroughly tested to keep up with a desperate Suns team. Phoenix (40-32), trying to make a late run to catch Dallas for the last playoff spot in the West, shot 54.9 percent in a 118-114 home win over Utah on Wednesday night for its season-high sixth straight win.

The Jazz tried to run with the up-tempo Suns but were outscored 31-14 on the fast break.

        Pick: Under 228.5

West Regional Final: #3 Missouri vs. #1 UConn [CBS | 4:40 PM ET]

Missouri: The biggest challenge for the Tigers will be UConn's 7-foot-3 center Hasheem Thabeet - literally. Their goal will be to minimize his impact by running and gunning up and down the floor. ā€œI think the biggest key is weā€™ve got to get that big beast to run,ā€ Missouri forward DeMarre Carroll said. ā€œSo hopefully we can get him running up and down the court, and fatigue could be a big factor in this game.ā€ The Tigers also hope to get Thabeet into early foul trouble, as he has fouled out of two of the team's four losses.

Missouri is 16-5 ATS in its last 21 games overall.
The OVER is 9-1 in Missouri's last 10 NCAA tournament games.

                Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 75 (OVER - Total Play of the Day)

UConn (-5.5, O/U 149.5): The Huskies have seen both of their previous national titles go through Arizona and will try to put themselves in position for a third trip to the Final Four in the last 10 years. They will look to control the tempo and may be tempted to run with the Tigers, who are coming off the highest-scoring game of the tournament. ā€œThey advertise it as the 40 fastest minutes in basketball,ā€ UConn coach Jim Calhoun said on Friday, ā€œAnd Iā€™m a believer. Have we truly found ourselves? If we get to Detroit, weā€™ll find ourselves.ā€

UConn is 3-0 ATS in its last 3 games overall.
The OVER is 21-7 in UConn's last 28 neutral site games.

                Key Injuries - NONE

                PROJECTED SCORE: 80

East Regional Final: #3 Villanova vs. #1 Pitt [CBS | 7:05 PM ET]

Villanova: The Wildcats are confident they can play with Pitt after knocking off Duke easily to get to the Sweet 16. However, the Panthers play a much tougher brand of basketball than the Blue Devils, and Villanova hopes to be ready for that. ā€œWe like to play ugly as well,ā€ Wildcats forward Dwayne Anderson said. ā€œWe want guys banging for loose balls.ā€ The Big East has already set a record for most teams by a conference in the Elite 8 with four teams, and this is just the 10th time two teams from the same conference will meet with a berth in the Final Four on the line.

Villanova is 1-4 ATS in the last 5 meetings.
The UNDER is 6-0 in the last 6 meetings.

                Key Injuries - NONE

                PROJECTED SCORE: 68

Pitt (-2, O/U 142): Panthers forward DeJuan Blair has fouled out in three of their four losses this season, including a 67-57 loss to Villanova back on January 28th. Blair insists he is a much different player since the last meeting, and he won't let his physical style of play affect this game. ā€œIā€™ve been good for the whole tournament - hopefully, theyā€™ll keep letting me play the way I am,ā€ Blair said. ā€œI canā€™t get in foul trouble for my team to win. Iā€™ve just got to be out on court. Everybody on my team and my family and my coaches and everybody just say to stay out of foul trouble. Iā€™ve just got to keep playing..ā€

Pitt is 8-3 ATS in its last 11 games vs. Big East.
The OVER is 19-9-1 in Pitt's last 29 games vs. Big East.

                Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 75 (Side Play of the Day)

                    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Rangers at Pittsburgh Penguins (-150, 5.5)

The Pittsburgh Penguins and New York Rangers are separated by one point in the Eastern Conference standings, but only one team appears prepared for the pressure that comes with the playoffs.

As the Atlantic Division rivals get ready to face off for the final time in the regular season on Saturday at Mellon Arena, the surging Penguins look to salvage a split of the six-game season series with the Rangers, who will try to bounce back from a meltdown against one of the league's doormats.

The sixth-place Penguins (40-27-8) dropped the first three matchups with the seventh-place Rangers (39-27-9) this season, with two coming by shootout and all at Madison Square Garden. However, Pittsburgh has since won twice at home over New York.

On Jan. 18, Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 33 shots in a 3-0 victory. Ten days later, Fleury made 32 saves and the Penguins' offense sparkled as Sidney Crosby had a goal and three assists in a five-goal third period of a 6-2 victory.

Heading into this contest, the Penguins captain is simply playing his best hockey of the season. After being held scoreless in a loss to Toronto on Feb. 14, Crosby has put together a 14-game point streak with seven goals and 17 assists.

                    Pick: Pittsburgh -150

Phoenix Coyotes at San Jose Sharks (-315, 5.5)

Though they still have one of the best records in the NHL, the San Jose Sharks have shown signs of vulnerability lately.

Getting back on track could be a challenge against a Phoenix Coyotes team that's made a recent habit of exposing the weaknesses of Western Conference contenders.

The Sharks look to avoid a third straight defeat and continue their home dominance of the Coyotes when the Pacific Division rivals meet Saturday night.

San Jose (48-15-11) has already clinched its second consecutive Pacific Division title with 107 points, one shy of the franchise record it set last season.

The Sharks, though, haven't looked like a dominant team in their last two games. They lost 6-5 in a shootout at Chicago on Wednesday night before falling 3-2 at Nashville on Thursday night. They blew a two-goal lead by giving up three within a 2:38 stretch in the second period against the Predators.

San Jose converted two of its four power-play opportunities in that game but didn't get an even strength goal. Though the Sharks rank among the league leaders with 235 total goals, they're in the bottom half with 145 at even strength.

"We didn't score a goal 5-on-5, and that's obviously been one of the big problems the last few months," defenseman Dan Boyle said. "We need to show more poise and patience with the puck."

The Sharks have eight games remaining before they hit the playoffs as one of the favorites to win the West, alongside Detroit.

"There's not much time left to fine tune this thing," Boyle said. "We obviously need to play better hockey, and it hasn't been good enough consistently."

It wasn't good enough last Tuesday in Phoenix, where the Sharks lost 4-3 to the Coyotes, who had gone 0-4-1 in their previous five games. Phoenix winger Shane Doan scored the game-winner with 26.9 seconds remaining after recording an assist on each of the team's first three goals.

Starting with that win over San Jose, Phoenix (31-36-7) has gone 3-1-1 in its last five. Its other two wins in that stretch came over playoff hopefuls Vancouver and Edmonton.

                    Pick: Phoenix +285
