    Daily Sports Roundup

    Friday, March 27

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The second day of the Sweet 16 offers up action in Indianapolis and Memphis, and the Hawks get a visit from the Celtics.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

Twenty teams will hit the hardwood around the NBA on Friday night as the league ends the work week with 10 matchups on the schedule. The top matchup on the slate will take place in Atlanta, where the Celtics will meet the Hawks. Boston edged the Hawks 88-85 in Atlanta on December 17, failing the cover the 4-point spread on the road. The Celtics also won a November matchup 103-102.

Also on tap for Friday: Oklahoma City at Toronto, Charlotte at Philadelphia, Milwaukee at Orlando, the Lakers at New Jersey, New Orleans at New York, Denver at Dallas, the Clippers at San Antonio, and Memphis at Sacramento. As well, LeBron James and his Cavaliers will play host to the lowly Timberwolves; those teams met with predictable results on December 17 - a 93-70 Cavs romp.

On the road to the Final Four . . .

The Sweet 16 round of the NCAA Tournament concludes on Friday night, with games in the Midwest and South regions. Overall top seed Louisville is one of four Midwest teams in action at Indianapolis' Lucas Oil Stadium, and they've been listed as a 9-point favorite against No. 12 Arizona (with the total for the game sitting at 139.5 points). The other Midwest contest is No. 3 Kansas vs. No. 2 Michigan State, with the Spartans 1.5-point favorites and the total at 138 points.

In South region action at FedExForum in Memphis on Friday it'll be No. 3 Syracuse vs. No. 2 Oklahoma and No. 4 Gonzaga vs. No. 1 North Carolina. The Orange/Sooners matchup opened as a pick'em, but Oklahoma had moved to a 1-point favorite by mid-week (with the total at 153 points). The top-seeded Tar Heels are favored by 8.5 points in their game against the Bulldogs to cap off the Sweet 16, while the oddsmakers have pegged the total for that matchup at 162.5.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

The NHL offers up six games on Friday night, including an East/West clash between the Devils and Blackhawks in Chicago. New Jersey hasn't played since Monday night, when they were doubled up 4-2 by the division-rival Flyers in Philadelphia. The Devils and Hawks met in New Jersey on March 17, with Martin Brodeur leading his team to a 3-2 win as a -150 home favorite on the moneyline.

Washington will host Tampa Bay in one of the other five games on the ice on Friday night. As well, it'll be Toronto at Buffalo, the Islanders at Detroit, Vancouver at Colorado, and Edmonton at Anaheim. The Oilers and Ducks haven't met since December 19 in Edmonton, when Anaheim picked up a 3-2 victory. Both of those teams need Friday's win in their hunt for a playoff position.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

The NCAA Tournament's Elite Eight will take place on Saturday (Glendale and Boston) and Sunday (Indianapolis and Memphis), with the Final Four set for April 4 and the tourney championship on April 6 (all at Detroit's Ford Field). The other three college hoops postseason events will wrap up next week; the National Invitational Tournament will stage its semifinals on March 31 and its championship on April 2, the CollegeInsider.com tourney will conclude on March 31, and the CBI finishes with a three-game set on March 30, April 1, and April 3.

      Six-pack for Friday

-- Villanova made Duke look like a Patriot League team.

-- Mike Anderson is the last coach to beat Memphis in Conference USA game; last night, he snapped Memphis' 27-game win streak in an impressive 102-91 spanking out in Arizona.

-- Pitt is now first-ever #1 seed to win its first three tourney games by 10 or less points; they simply survive and advance, but the shot Fields hit to put Pitt up 55-54 couldn't have been one they wanted in that situation. It went in though, and Panthers move on.

-- UConn rubbed out Purdue, will now prepare for West regional final while the NCAA prepares to investigate the Husky program.

-- Hasheem Thabeet dominates games, forcing teams to try and beat UConn either from perimeter or in transition, which is harder to do in a domed stadium, where shooting backgrounds aren't as good.

-- From everything you read, Kentucky and Billy Gillispie will be parting ways Friday, ending a bizarre two-year coaching tenure for Gillispie in Lexington. Where do they turn next? Who knows.

Friday's List of 13: Hall of Fame Tale of the Tape......

Curt Schilling retired this week; there has been lot of speculation on whether he is a Hall of Famer or not. Bert Blyleven isn't in the Hall yet; here is a comparison of their career statistics.........

-- Place of birth: Schilling: Alaska.....Blyleven: Netherlands.
-- Years in big leagues: Blyleven 22, Schilling 20.
        -- Won-lost record: Schilling 216-146; Blyleven 287-250.
        -- Complete games/shutouts: Blyleven 242/60......Schilling 83/20

        -- Innings pitched: Blyleven 4,970.....Schilling 3,261
        -- Hits allowed: Blyleven 4,632.......Schilling 2,998
        -- Walks/strikeouts: Schilling 711/3,116.......Blyleven 1,322/3,701

        -- ERA: Blyleven 3.31......Schilling 3.46
        -- All-Star Games: Schilling: 6.......Blyleven 2
-- World Series rings: Schilling 3, Blyleven 2.

        --Postseason pitching records:
        Schilling-- 11-2, 2.23 in 19 starts
Blyleven-- 5-1, 2.47 in eight games.

My bottom line on this is that I think they both should get into the Hall of Fame, but either they go in together, or Blyleven goes first. He pitched for small market teams in an era when starting pitchers had to do more than they do now, and that has to count in his favor.

Pick ‘n’ Roll: NBA best bets
              -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

              Denver Nuggets at Dallas Mavericks

The old adage is that a team is most likely to lose the first or last game of a road trip.

Friday’s game in Dallas is the finale of a three-game trip for Denver, which lost at Phoenix Monday but won in New Orleans Wednesday.

Denver beat the Hornets without Nene, who was suspended for two games following an altercation against the Suns.

Nene head butted the Suns' Louis Amundson Monday. When Nene was leaving the court, it then appeared he had contact with official Bill Spooner. Still, coach George Karl said he was “shocked” that Nene even got one game.

Johan Petro started in Nene’s place against the Hornets, but Nene’s loss will be felt more against the Mavs, who are 4-1 ATS in their past five at home.

With Kenyon Martin still not 100 percent from his back injury, the Mavericks should be able to attack the middle and even win the rebounding battle. Plus the Mavs, who are just 1-6 ATS in the past seven with Denver, are desperate to hang on to that No. 8 spot with the Suns surging behind them.

              Pick: Dallas

L.A. Clippers at San Antonio Spurs (-11.5, 191)

The league’s worst franchise goes up against arguably its model team. How can you pick against the latter?

              You can’t.

The Spurs got a major boost with Manu Ginobili returning from injury in Wednesday night’s win in Atlanta, one in which Tony Parker went off. San Antonio pulled off the upset (it was a 6.5-point dog) despite Tim Duncan getting the night off to rest his knees.

Ginobili had been out since Feb. 11 with an ankle injury and played just 14 minutes, going 1-for-7 from the field with two rebounds.

There will be some rust but the Spurs will be geeked to have their Big 3 on the floor together for the first time in more than a month, especially in front of the home folks.

Something has to give here. The Clips are 0-5 ATS in their past five vs. the West while San Antonio is 0-5 ATS in its past five home games. But the Spurs have beaten the Clips by 28 and 22 points in the past two meetings, respectively.

              Pick: San Antonio

                      Friday, March 27

                      NCAA tournament

#12 seeds are 3-7 vs spread in this round since 1994, but Arizona isn't your ordinary #12 seed; Wildcats are 12-3 out of conference, 3-1 as an underdog- they start three guys who will play in NBA, but they won't leave game, because they have no depth. Louisville won twelve games in row (9-3 vs spread) but struggled vs thin Siena squad Sunday, trailing in second half. Cardinals are 11-3 out of Big East, but they're 1-8 vs spread in their last nine non-conference games, all as a favorite.

Kansas (+6.5) was down 37-18 at half, lost 75-62 at Michigan State Jan 10, in game where both point guards scored 20+ points. Jayhawks have gotten lot better since then, winning 16 of 19 since Michigan State loss. Kansas is 12-2 outside the Big 12. Spartans won eight of last nine games are also 12-2 in non-league games. Key is whether Spartans' frontcourt, which is deep, can offset more talented but thinner Kansas frontcourt. Suton better shoot better than 1-10, which he did in their USC win.

Syracuse won nine of last ten games, with only loss to Louisville when they were playing fourth night in row; Orangemen beat Kansas 89-81 in OT in Kansas City Nov 25, in their only game vs Big 12 foe. Since 1998, underdog is 9-6 vs spread in games with 2-3 seeds playing. Oklahoma is 4-4 in last eight games after 25-1 start, but Blake Griffin missed most of the losses with a concussion- he was clearly the difference in Sooners' 73-63 win vs Michigan. Orangemen are more diverse team on offense.

Gonzaga beat North Carolina in preseason NIT couple of years back in NYC; Zags won last ten games, are 2-0 vs the spread as dog this season. Gonzaga is just 9-5 outside the WCC, losing by 5 to Arizona, 5 in OT to UConn, 18 to Memphis (also lost to Portland State, Utah). Lawson back in Tar Heel lineup gives UNC open court spark they previously lacked; Carolina is 16-2 in last 18 games, but is 3-6-1 vs spread in last 10 games as a favorite. #1 seeds are 1-4 vs spread in last five games vs #4-seeds.

Midwest Region: #12 Arizona vs. #1 Louisville [CBS | 7:07 PM ET]

Arizona: The Wildcats weren't supposed to make it this far as one of the final teams to make the NCAA tournament field. But they're here in the Sweet 16 and now have the chance to knock out the top overall seed. “Just the opportunity to walk through this journey this year is incredible - it’s stretched me, it’s forced me to think outside the box," Arizona interim head coach Russ Pennell said. "It’s very unconventional what we’ve gone through. If this is the only opportunity, so be it. Life goes on.”
Arizona is 3-1 SU & ATS in its last 4 games overall.
The OVER is 6-2 in Arizona's last 8 NCAA tournament games.

Key Injuries - G Nic Wise (ankle) is probable.

PROJECTED SCORE: 67 (OVER - Total Play of the Day)

Louisville (-9, O/U 139): Cardinals head coach Rick Pitino owns a career record of 8-0 in regional semifinals but realizes he is facing a similar opponent defensively in Arizona. “It’s the closest I’ve ever seen two teams in the type of pressure (defense) they apply,” Pitino said. “They do one thing different - they bring their center out to the corner sometimes. But it’s almost identical to what we’re trying to accomplish.” One possible distraction for Louisville is that Pitino is rumored to possibly replace Pennell at Arizona or Billy Gillispie at Kentucky if he is in fact fired.

Louisville is 16-7 ATS in its last 23 games overall.
The OVER is 4-2 in Louisville's last 6 NCAA tournament games.

                          Key Injuries - NONE

                          PROJECTED SCORE: 76

South Region: #4 Gonzaga vs. #1 North Carolina [CBS | 9:57 PM ET]

Gonzaga: The Bulldogs upset North Carolina 82-74 three years ago in the semifinals of the Preseason NIT after losing star Adam Morrison to the NBA, so they know they can play with the Tar Heels. Still, Gonzaga is relishing the role of the underdog again and can't wait to prove the oddsmakers wrong. “It’s kind of nice to be the underdog,” Gonzaga's Josh Heytvelt said. “Most of the season we’ve had the bull’s-eye on our back - through our conference and a lot of preseason games. There’s a lot of hype for Carolina. The fans don’t expect anything but a championship from those guys.”

Gonzaga is 20-1 SU in its last 21 games overall.
The OVER is 8-2 in Gonzaga's last 10 games overall.

Key Injuries - G Matt Bouldin (knee) is probable.

PROJECTED SCORE: 79 (Side Play of the Day)

North Carolina (-8.5, O/U 162.5): Wayne Ellington has led the Tar Heels with 48 points in two NCAA tournament games so far, but there's no doubt this team is much more dangerous with Ty Lawson running the offense. Lawson has helped open things up for Ellington, who made 3-of-6 shots from beyond the arc in an 84-70 win over LSU in the second round. “I feel like it’s that time of year where I think everybody should be elevating their game,” Ellington said. “I’ve just been stepping up to the challenge.”

North Carolina is 3-7 ATS in its last 10 games overall.
The UNDER is 4-1 in North Carolina's last 5 games overall.

Key Injuries - PG Ty Lawson (toe) is probable.

                          PROJECTED SCORE: 83
