    Daily Sports Roundup

    Tuesday, March 24

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Lakers look to roll over the Thunder, the Jazz get a visit from the Rockets, and the Habs aim for a win over the Thrashers.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

There are just four games on the NBA's schedule for Tuesday night, including Kobe Bryant and the Lakers on the road against Oklahoma City. Los Angeles got past Chicago 117-109 on Saturday night, as Bryant poured in 28 points to go along with seven assists, and Pau Gasol added 23 points. The last time the Lakers and Thunder met was February 24, with L.A. winning 107-93 on the road.

Chicago will host Detroit on Tuesday night, while Golden State is at San Antonio, and Utah gets a visit from Houston. The Jazz are coming off a 101-94 win over the Thunder, with Deron Williams picking up 24 points and 11 assists. Utah also topped Houston the last time the two teams met, as Carlos Boozer scored 20 points and grabbed 17 rebounds in a 101-94 Jazz home victory back on March 4.

    A break from the Madness . . .

The National Invitational Tournament offers up the only college hoops contests on the Tuesday night schedule, with Auburn vs. Baylor and Florida vs. Penn State in quarterfinal action. The NIT quarterfinals will conclude on Wednesday night, with the semifinals being held on March 31, and the championship April 2.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

The National Hockey League offers up eight games on Tuesday night, including Montreal at home to Atlanta. The Canadiens were unable to beat the rival Maple Leafs on Saturday night, getting a pair of goals from Maxim Lapierre in a 5-2 defeat. Jaroslav Halak stopped 37 of 42 Toronto shots. The Thrashers skated to a 4-3 victory over Tampa Bay on Saturday, with Johan Hedberg making 29 saves.

Rounding out the NHL's Tuesday slate: Minnesota at the Rangers, Washington at Toronto, Columbus at Tampa Bay, Anaheim at Nashville, Los Angeles at St. Louis, Detroit at Edmonton, and Vancouver at Dallas. The Stars' playoff chances took a hit on Saturday afternoon when they fell 5-2 to the Sharks in San Jose. Dallas forward Brad Richards suffered a broken hand and will be out indefinitely.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

The end of the World Baseball Classic leaves baseball fans with just Grapefruit and Cactus league action until the regular season finally gets underway in a couple of weeks. Tuesday's exhibition action on the diamond includes games between the Red Sox and Yankees, White Sox and Indians, and Nationals and Orioles. Vegas oddsmakers don't like the chances of either Washington or Baltimore to win their respective league pennants this year; the Nats are at 60/1 in the National League on that prop, with the O's at 50/1 in the American League. The other longshots heading into the regular season: Seattle (50/1) and Kansas City (50/1) in the AL, as well as San Diego (50/1) and Pittsburgh (75/1) in the NL.

Tuesday's List of 13: Random thoughts on a quiet night.....

        13) Life slowly returns to normal after a great weekend of hoop; the next two weeks will drag until baseball starts, with the few games in NCAA tournament this weekend, as well as some NIT games to get us through one of the slower periods of the sports year. The last two weekends are two of the best all year, with so much great action, but now its time to move on, as the weather in the northeast improves.

        12) OK I admit, it, Syracuse is better than I thought. Very diverse on offense, a great point guard, and an underrated defender in Harris, a very tough kid who doesn't get near enough credit.

        11) It has been five years since a #1 seed missed the Sweet 16, when both Stanford and Kentucky got beat in the second round.

        10) This is the first time ever that all the 1-3 seeds got through to the round of 16, which should make this weekend better than usual.

        9) Is there any doubt Blake Griffin is best college player in country? Kid had 61 points, 30 rebounds in two games this weekend.

        8) Michigan's basketball team wore Adidas t-shirts this weekend with the slogan "Queme los Barcos" on the back. Had to know what that means; turns out it means "Burn the ships", a reference to Hernando Cortes, and what he told his troops to do before the 1519 conquest of the Aztec empire, burn the ships so there was nothing left to do but fight. Turns out Michigan coach John Beilein is a history buff, and he used that phrase to spur his team on when it had its back to the wall late this season, and it worked, except Blake Griffin isn't an Aztec.

        7) Must be fun announcing for Korea's national baseball team; three guys named Lee, two Kim's, two Park's; all nine of their starters have only one syllable in their last name..........unfortunately, Joe Morgan was one of the announcers we had to listen to Monday night-- it is one of life's great mysteries how this guy lasted 20 years on ESPN.

        6) First college football game in Jerry Jones' gorgeous new stadium in Dallas will be BYU against Oklahoma September 5.

        5) Jones hasn't sold naming rights to the new stadium yet; you'd have to think in this economic climate, thats going to be tough to do, and get enough money to make Jones happy. .

        4) NFL schedule comes out soon: looks like Titans at Steelers in the season opener, with an all-AFL Monday night twinbill-- Buffalo at New England and the Chargers at Oakland, to close out Week 1.

        3) NFL teams use Wonderlic Test to judge a player's ability to make decisions quickly; of the three big QB prospects in this draft, Georgia QB Stafford scored an excellent 38 out of 50, Marc Sanchez scored a 28 and Josh Freeman of Kansas State 27.

        2) Freeman is an interesting case; I watch ton of college football and no experts said last year that they thought Freeman was such a great prospect. But he is big and strong and worked out well, so now teams are in love with him. I'd be really, really wary of him. To me, it is the game action that means the most in evaluating talent.

        1) My final thought on the World Baseball Classic-- it isn't meant to be a big thing in this country, it is to market baseball in China, sports' greatest untapped source of income. The best time to have this event is in November, after the major league season, but then no one in this country would televise it, not during football season.

People in this country care about the major league season, not about some tournament meant to market the sport world-wide.

Detroit Pistons at Chicago Bulls [TNT | 8 PM ET]

Pistons: Detroit will be short-handed in this key meeting with the Bulls, who sit just two games behind in the race for the seventh seed in the Eastern Conference. The Pistons have lost five straight games at Chicago and hope Rodney Stuckey can play better than he did in the last meeting. Stuckey scored a career-high 40 points in a 104-98 win over the Bulls on December 23rd but totaled only 16 in a 107-102 loss on February 20th. Chicago rookie Derrick Rose had 23 points in that victory, and the Bulls are 16-8 when he scores 20 or more this season.

Pistons are 10-4 ATS in their last 14 games overall.
The OVER is 7-1 in Detroit's last 8 games overall.

Key Injuries - G Richard Hamilton (groin) is doubtful.
F Rasheed Wallace (calf) is OUT.
G Allen Iverson (back) is OUT.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Bulls (NA): Chicago nearly blew a double-digit lead for the second straight game but this time escaped with a 101-99 victory at Washington on Monday. The Bulls had led the Lakers by 14 points on Saturday before suffering a 117-109 loss. “Of course there’s a concern, but the biggest concern is winning and losing,” Chicago head coach Vinny Del Negro said. “That’s what it comes down to. We made enough plays today to win. We were fortunate a little bit at the end, but we got the job done.” The Bulls sit 1.5 games ahead of Charlotte for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Bulls are 7-1 ATS in their last 8 home games.
The OVER is 5-1 in the last 6 meetings.

Key Injuries - F Luol Deng (shin) is OUT.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Houston Rockets at Utah Jazz [TNT | 10:30 PM ET]

Rockets: Houston has once again surprised critics with an outstanding late-season run that has seen the team go 16-4 since losing Tracy McGrady for the season with a knee injury. The Rockets are coming off an impressive 87-85 win at San Antonio on Sunday behind 24 points from Ron Artest. “I would say it’s been a surprising climb to first,” Rockets forward Shane Battier said. “We’ve had so much - just melees this year with all the injuries we’ve had and lineup shuffles and trades. I don’t know that too many people thought we would be here today.”

Road team is 9-4 ATS in the last 13 meetings.
The UNDER is 7-2 in Houston's last 9 games overall.

Key Injuries - F Carl Landry (calf) is OUT.
G Tracy McGrady (knee) is OUT.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Jazz (-5, O/U 193): Utah is not only chasing Denver and Portland for the Northwest Division title but also Houston for the #2 seed in the Western Conference playoff race. The Rockets are just 2.5 games ahead of the Jazz, making this a very important game that could ultimately determine where the teams finish. Utah will likely have center Mehmet Okur back for this matchup after he was poked in the eye in Friday's 101-94 victory at Oklahoma City last Friday. “It feels a lot better now but it still isn’t 100 percent,” Okur said. “I’m going to be alright, hopefully.”

Jazz are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games overall.
The UNDER is 7-2 in last 9 games as a favorite.

Key Injuries - C Mehmet Okur (eye) is probable.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Pick ‘n’ Roll: NBA best bets
                -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Detroit Pistons at Chicago Bulls (NA)

The Pistons are getting dangerously close to falling into the eighth-seed - a position that would match them against the East-leading Cavaliers in the first round of the playoffs.

The Pistons have lost four of their last five and are just 4-6 in their last 10 overall but each of their last four setbacks were by five or fewer points.

“This is four games we’ve given away at the end," Pistons guard Arron Afflalo told reporters. “We’ve got to find a way to pull these out.”

The only problem is that the Pistons are 2-8 against the spread (ATS) in their last 10 overall against Chicago.

The Bulls, meanwhile, are 4-1 in their last five home tilts, including back-to-back wins over the Boston Celtics and New Orleans Hornets.

Chicago is 2.5 games back of the Pistons for the seventh-seed and is 0-6 ATS in its last six against Detroit.

                Pick: Bulls

Houston Rockets at Utah Jazz (-5, 193)

Houston has been playing well recently but winning in Salt Lake is no walk in the park.

The Rockets have won eight of their last 10 overall but are 5-5 against the spread (ATS) in that period.

Utah, meanwhile, has won 11 consecutive home tilts and is coming off an away win Friday over the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Point guard Deron Williams led the Utah with 24 points and 11 assists Friday. Five other Jazz players also scored in double-digits.

“I just felt like I needed to get it going a little bit,” Williams told reporters Friday.

Williams should have another big scoring night when he matches up against Rockets second-year point guard Aaron Brooks.

Brooks, who has started just 25 career games as a professional, is putting up 11 points and three assists a night.

Utah is 4-1 ATS in its last five at home against a club with a winning road record.

                Pick: Jazz

                              -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Minnesota Wild at New York Rangers (-175, 5)

The Wild got a much-needed 3-0 win over the Oilers Sunday moving them into 10th place in the Western Conference, one point behind the eighth-place Predators.

But the victory came at a high price. Captain Mikko Koivu had to leave the game with a knee injury at the end of the first period. There is still no word on the severity of Koivu’s injury, but the team doesn’t seem to be holding out much hope for his return.

“Mikko’s been our best player game in and game out,” coach Jacques Lemaire told reporters. “He hasn’t had too many days off this year. Losing him, it’s a huge loss for our team. But, you know, as I always say, if you’re going to lose players – and sometimes you lose your top players – somebody’s gotta step up and do some of his work.”

The Wild will need contributions from other players if they want to win against the Rangers Tuesday night. New York ended a three-game winning streak with a 2-1 loss to the Ottawa Senators Sunday night, but has been playing much better hockey in the last week.

Look for the Rangers to take advantage of this opportunity to increase their lead over the eighth spot team in the East.

                              Pick: Rangers

Anaheim Ducks at Nashville Predators (-150, 5.5)

Only one point separates the Anaheim Ducks and the Nashville Predators, ranked ninth and eighth respectively in the Western Conference standings.

The Ducks have been coming on top of close games recently winning four of their last five, two of them in overtime and one in a shootout. A 6-2 victory over the Coyotes Sunday gave the club its first three-game winning streak since November.

Anaheim will have to keep up the same intensity if it wants to make the playoffs. Eight of the club’s last 10 remaining games are against teams that are ahead of it in the Western Conference.

“We can’t look past Tuesday,” defenseman Chris Pronger said. “That’s obviously a huge game for us. It’s a must-win. It has to be a playoff-style game – do whatever it takes to win, and worry about the other games later.”

The Predators have been holding it together - in spite of a few key injuries - winning two of their last four and dropping the other two in overtime. They should be getting center Radek Bonk back in time for Tuesday’s game, but captain and leading scorer Jason Arnott remains questionable with an upper body injury.

                              Pick: Ducks
