                  Monday's best NIT bets

Kentucky Wildcats at Creighton Bluejays (-2, 139.5)

The grumblings in Lexington must be white noise to Kentucky coach Billy Gillispie by now. Since taking the job at UK, Wildcats fanatics have vocally disagreed with everything Gillispie has done with the program.

"I would say there have probably been a few rumors," he told the media. "I don't worry about it much. I worry about the things that I can control. And what we can control is how we prepare for Creighton."

Kentucky is coming off a solid win over UNLV in the opening round of the NIT. The Wildcats got regular production from their big two of Pat Patterson and Jodie Meeks but also got help from role players Perry Stevenson and Ramon Harris, who combined for 16 points, 14 rebounds and six assists.

“It feels great to be able to advance and to know we get to play another game,” Patterson told reporters. “We’re having fun playing together and we don’t want it to end.

“Hopefully we keep this going and play well in the next game.”

This is a big game for the Bluejays. They have the rare chance of hosting a powerhouse program like Kentucky. Creighton wasn't impressive in its opening round win over Bowling Green. It feel behind quickly on the scoreboard and needed some late-minute magic to escape a letdown loss.

                  Pick: Kentucky +2

Davidson Wildcats at St. Mary's Gaels (-4, 143)

Usually the break between the NCAA opening weekend and Sweet 16 is unbearable for college hoop heads. And while the NIT is there, it always falls short of quenching that thirst. But not Monday.

It might read Davidson versus St. Mary's on the ticket stub but its Stephen Curry versus Patty Mills on the court. The two guards won't be defending each other but will go bucket for bucket when the game is on the line.

''There are a lot of parallels between Mills and Steph because of their ability to not only manufacture points for themselves but their ability to manufacture points for their team, and their ability to make their team better,'' Davidson coach Bob McKillop told the press.

Mills is healthy after missing a good chunk of the regular season with a broken right hand. Since returning in the WCC tournament, the junior from Australia is averaging just under 16 points per game including a 27-point performance against Washington State in the opening round.

Curry scored 32 points against South Carolina Tuesday, dropping 5-of-9 shots from beyond the arc. He scored all but two of his team's final 13 points of the game but needs more from his teammates.

The Wildcats bench had the same number of points as they did personal fouls (seven) versus the Gamecocks and, as a team, Davidson shot just 53 percent from the foul line. Curry was 9-for-10 from the stripe.

                  Pick: St. Mary's -4
