    Daily Sports Roundup

    Sunday, March 22

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The NCAA Tournament is cut down to the Sweet 16, the USA returns to WBC action, and the Sprint Cup Series hits Bristol.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

San Antonio will host Houston in an all-Texas matchup on the NBA slate for Sunday. The Spurs and Rockets just met on March 14, with San Antonio pulling out an 88-85 road victory as a 2.5-point underdog. Tony Parker led the Spurs with 28 points on that day, while Tim Duncan had 15 points to go along with 12 rebounds. Ron Artest poured in a team-high 21 points for Houston in the defeat.

Rounding out the NBA's Sunday slate: Miami at Detroit, Oklahoma City at Minnesota, the Clippers at Toronto, Golden State at New Orleans, Philadelphia at Sacramento, and Cleveland at New Jersey. The Cavaliers rolled to an easy victory over the Nets back in November, winning 106-82 as a 5.5-point road favorite. LeBron James was good for 31 points and eight rebounds in that game.

    The search for Cinderella . . .

The East Region's No. 1 seed, Pittsburgh, will try to put forward a stronger performance on Sunday when they take on No. 8 Oklahoma State in second-round action at the NCAA Tournament. The Panthers got a tough fight from No. 16 East Tennessee State on Friday, leading by just three points at halftime in a 72-62 victory. DeJuan Blair led Pittsburgh's attack with 27 points in that matchup.

The Panthers have been listed as 8-point favorites versus the Cowboys on Sunday, while the other No. 1 seed in action, the Midwest's Louisville, is favored by 11 points in their matchup with No. 9 Siena. The Cardinals got past No. 16 Morehead State 74-54 in their first-round matchup, getting 15 points from Samardo Samuels. The Saints are coming off a 74-72 OT victory over Ohio State.

There are three other Midwest matchups on the tourney schedule for Sunday: No. 11 Dayton vs. No. 3 Kansas (-8), No. 13 Cleveland State vs. No. 12 Arizona (-2.5), and No. 10 USC vs. No. 2 Michigan State (-4). In the West it's No. 6 Marquette vs. No. 3 Missouri (-3.5), the East also features No. 12 Wisconsin vs. No. 4 Xavier (-3.5), and the South offers up No. 6 Arizona State vs. No. 3 Syracuse (-2). The Orangeman knocked out Stephen F. Austin in the first round.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

The Flyers and Penguins will meet in Pittsburgh on Sunday afternoon in one of seven games on the day's National Hockey League schedule. Those two Pennsylvania rivals last met on the ice back on February 21, with the Penguins pulling out a 5-4 road victory. Sidney Crosby picked up two goals and two assists for Pittsburgh in the outing, and Mike Richards had a three-point game for Philly.

Other afternoon NHL contests on Sunday include New Jersey at Boston, Los Angeles at Chicago, and Edmonton at Minnesota, while the evening slate features Ottawa at the Rangers, Colorado at San Jose, and Phoenix at Anaheim. The Coyotes and Ducks clashed on Thursday night, with Bobby Ryan scoring the shootout winner in a 3-2 Anaheim win. Scottie Upshall had two points for Phoenix.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

The second semifinal matchup at the World Baseball Classic will take place at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles on Sunday night, with the United States meeting Japan. The American squad fell 10-6 to Venezuela in the Pool 2 title game on Wednesday night, while Japan is coming off a 6-2 victory over the Koreans that put them on top of Pool 1. The WBC championship game is set for Monday night.

Finally, the Sprint Cup Series returns to the track on Sunday afternoon with the Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway. Jeff Burton won this event last season, but the Vegas oddsmakers have him back at 22/1 odds to repeat as the champion. Kyle Busch is pegged as the 4/1 favorite, followed by Carl Edwards at 6/1, and both Kurt Busch and Jimmie Johnson at 7/1. Denny Hamlin is next at 8/1 odds, while five-time Bristol champion Jeff Gordon is back at 10/1 odds to win.

      Six-pack for Sunday

Some baseball stats to hopefully make it feel warmer out........

-- Mets were 40-42 LY thru June 30 LY and 13-12 in September, allowing 4.5+ runs/game all four months; they were 36-19 in July, August, allowing 3.8 runs/game in both months.

-- Alfonso Soriano walked only 43 times LY; 11 were intentional.

-- Arizona's Mark Reynolds had 204 strikeouts LY, the most ever.

-- Dodgers made playoffs LY despite being 67-70 on September 1.

-- Paul Konerko hit 110 points higher at home than on the road.

-- Tampa Rays were 4th in AL East LY in runs scored. Fourth in a five-team division, yet they won the division and the AL title.

Sunday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.........

        13) Best game of day Saturday was Gonzaga's 83-81 win against a Western Kentucky team that lost by 32 at Evansville, 28 at Murray State earlier this season. Zags play much better as an underdog, and they'll be very dangerous opponent for North Carolina Friday.

        12) Modern basketball; Hilltoppers lose by a hoop in a game where they made 5-14 at the charity stripe. They also made 12-25 from the arc. Not sure if it was great offense or lousy defense, but both sides shot 50%+, with only 11 turnovers apiece.

        11) Speaking of whom, Ty Lawson didn't look very hurt, did he? If every there was a misleading score, it was Carolina's 84-70 win; the game was 64-63 with 7:15 left to play.

        10) Duke advances to Sweet 16 despite allowing both opponents this weekend to shoot 50%+ from floor. Texas will regret its 16-25 mark from foul line when they think about their 74-69 loss Saturday.

        10) Next for Duke is Villanova; thank the lord neither side is playing at home next weekend. Very unfair to have to play NCAA tourney games on the road. UCLA not only had to play in Philly, they had a 1:00 ET tipoff Saturday, which is 10am for west coast people.

        9) Purdue overcame playing in a hostile arena when it survived with a 76-74 win over Washington in Portland. Boilers led by 11 at half, but shot just 39% for game; only couple of key blocked shots in the last minute subdued the Huskies, who got 20 points, 17 rebounds from the very tough Jon Brockman, playing his last college game.

        8) UConn has been the best team so far this weekend, winning by 26 against Texas A&M, after waxing Chattanooga by 56 on Thursday. Interesting to see how well-coached Purdue will attack the Huskies.

        7) Maryland star Vasquez will be in NBA someday, but he needs to zip his lips before he gets there; he mouthed off about Memphis not being all that great, and how Maryland had played in the ACC, so it would not be awed by Memphis. Then the game started. Memphis led by 20 at the half, won by 19. So much for playing in the ACC.

        6) The only two ACC teams still playing in NCAAs got to play its games this weekend at home; Virginia Tech was down 28 at home to Baylor in an NIT game Saturday morning. Bad week for the ACC.

        5) Blake Griffin single-handedly beat Michigan Saturday; wasn't real impressed by any of the other Sooners, except maybe PG Johnson-- beating a Beilein team with a day to prepare is a great win for coach Capel and the Sooners, but to get any further, they'll need a lot more production from the other three starters.

Elsewhere in the world, where I'm told things are still happening....
        4) Nomar Garciaparra is batting .500 for the A's this spring; Jason Giambi is hitting .172. There will be no end to my bitterness if he is terrible in his return to Oakland this season.

        3) Brandon Webb is 0-2, 8.18 so far this spring; as ace of my fantasy team, this has me a little bit concerned; that and fact that 64% of his balls in play LY were ground balls, and Orlando Hudson is in LA.

        2) Korea whacked Venezuela 10-2, advancing to finals of WBC; this is terrific, one of the teams in the finals has no almost major leaguers on it. Japan plays a depleted American team Sunday; Mark Derosa will be starting at 1B for Team USA. He's not a first baseman.

        1) Tom Lehman is eligibile for the Senior Tour, but he leads the PGA event in Tampa by a stroke, with 18 holes left to play. I don't golf, but still feels weird that I'll be eligible for Senior Tour later this year.

            -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pick ‘n’ Roll: NBA best bets
            -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Clippers at Toronto Raptors (-4, 209)

The Raptors have failed to live up to expectations this season following consecutive playoff appearances. They're 8-24 since Jan. 10.

After a home win over Indiana last Sunday ended a seven-game skid, Toronto dropped both games of a home-and-home series with Charlotte this week, losing 112-86 on the road Monday night and 102-89 on Friday night.

"We've been talking about turning points all year, and to be honest, there's no turning points. We have to win a game first," forward Chris Bosh said. "Then we have to put a string of wins together before we have anything turn around."

The only Raptors to score in double figures Sunday were their most consistent contributors this season - Bosh with 35 and Andrea Bargnani adding 27. Bosh is scoring a career-best 22.8 points per game - his fourth straight averaging at least 22.0 - and Bargnani has averaged 19.3 points since Dec. 31, which allowed Toronto to trade Jermaine O'Neal to Miami.

Bosh has averaged 27.1 points and 10.0 rebounds in his last seven games against the Clippers, and he scored 31 in the Raptors' 97-75 win in Los Angeles on Dec. 22.

            Pick: Under 209

Golden State Warriors at New Orleans Hornets (-8.5, 215)

The New Orleans Hornets are not going to underestimate non-playoff teams, especially at this time of the season.

Their push toward home-court advantage for at least one round of the playoffs continues Sunday night as they host a Golden State team that has no postseason aspirations but is playing better of late.

Locked in a crowded Western Conference playoff race with seven teams jockeying for the No. 2 seed, New Orleans (43-25) resumes its five-game homestand after posting back-to-back wins over two of the worst teams in the league. The victories, though, were not exactly playoff-quality efforts.

The Hornets were tied with slumping Memphis at 79 with less than five minutes remaining but used a 17-1 run to win 96-84 on Friday.

Chris Paul continued his scoring tear with 32 points against the Grizzlies. Scoring a career-high 22.1 per game this season, Paul is averaging 29.3 on 57.7 percent shooting in his last six contests.

His scoring is up, but so are his minutes. Paul has played 40-plus minutes in five of his last seven games, including 41 on Friday and 41 in Wednesday's 94-93 win over lowly Minnesota as the Hornets only avoided a third straight loss after Randy Foye missed a jumper at the buzzer.

            Pick: New Orleans -8.5

                  Sunday, March 22

                  Sunday's NCAA games
Noon start time is 10am for Arizona State's body clocks; Sun Devils are 4-1 in last five games, blowing 15-point halftime lead in the loss- they're 4-0 vs spread as an underdog this year. Syracuse is 5-1 in second round games since 1996; they beat Memphis, Kansas, Florida in its non-league games, but they did turn ball over 21 times vs SF Austin Friday. #3 seed is just 9-14 against spread when facing #6 seed the last 9+ tournaments. Interesting to see how well-schooled Sun Devils attack Syracuse zone.

Cleveland State-Arizona is 9th 12-13 seed game in tournament history; favorite is 7-1 vs spread in previous eight. Veteran Viking squad is 12-2 in last 14 games- they lost 78-63 at Pac-10 champ Washington, its only game vs Pac-10 foe this season. Arizona has no depth; they won Friday by speeding up Utah- that won't work vs athletic Cleveland State squad. Wildcats are still just 2-5 in last seven games. Vikings were +12 (18-6) in turnovers in their easy win over Wake Forest Friday night.

Oklahoma State won nine of last 11 games, covered three of last four as an underdog; they shot 57% from floor in dramatic win vs Tennessee in first round, will find Pitt defense tougher. Panthers are just 11th #1 seed to win first round game by 10 or less points- none of previous ten won the national title. Pitt is just 11th #1 seed to win its first round game by 10 or less points; previous 10 were 5-5 vs spread (7-3 SU-- #1 seeds are 84-12 overall in second round games)

Siena won tense, double OT game Friday, with its bench playing total of just 17 minutes; Saints played big-name teams this year, losing at Pitt by 13, at Kansas by 7, vs Tennessee by 14, Oklahoma State by 9 on neutral court in Florida. Siena is 16-2 since losing at Kansas Jan 6. Louisville is on 11-game win streak, covering five of last six; Iona coach Willard used to work for Pitino, so Cardinals will be well-schooled on Saints. #1 seed is 7-4 vs spread when laying double digits in second round, since '02.

Kansas split pair of games vs A-14 foes, losing 61-60 to UMass Dec 13, then beating Temple 71-59 a week later; Jayhawks are very young, with five new starters, but have excellent PG in Collins. Dayton is 15-1 out of conference this year, 6-3 vs spread as underdog- they held West Virginia to 37% from floor, 5-20 from arc in Friday's upset win. Kansas couldn't contain Woodside (37 points) in its first round game, but Dayton's PG is out. #6 seeds are 14-9 vs spread when facing 3-seed in second round.

Michigan State is 7-1 in last eight second round games, losing only as a 10.5-point dog to North Carolina two years ago; Spartans won seven of last eight games, are 11-2 out of conference- Ohio State is only one of its last eight opponents to score more than 66 points. USC won its last six games, is 7-5 vs spread as dog, covering last three tries. Trojans held BC 33% from floor Friday, 6-23 from arc- they trailed last two gamea at the half, still won both. Spartans are way more physical than BC, though.

Missouri won, covered its last four games, holding its foes to 59.5 ppg; they're 7-1 vs spread in last eight games as the favorite; Tigers are 11-2 out of Big 12 this year, losing to Xavier, Illinois. Marquette is 4-3 as an underdog this season; three of its last four games were decided either in OT or by a single point. Eagles miss injured PG James; they shot 36.2% vs Utah State, 5-19 from arc in holding off Utah State. Should be faster pace than either team saw in its first round contest.

Since 1996, #12 seeds are 11-6 against the spread when facing #4 seed in second round game; Wisconsin is 1-4 vs spread in last five games as dog, but Ryan won four national titles in D-III, is fantastic tournament coach. with 11-7 record in D-I tourney. Xavier is 12-2 outside A-14, winning at LSU, Cincinnati, winning neutral court games vs Memphis, Va Tech and Missouri. Badgers were down 12 at half to Florida State Friday, scored first 13 points of second half- they better not get down 12 vs Xavier.

Midwest Region: #13 Cleveland State vs. #12 Arizona
[CBS | 2:40 PM ET] | Full Matchup

Cleveland State: The Vikings pulled off arguably the biggest upset of the tournament so far with an 84-69 rout of Wake Forest in the first round. But head coach Gary Waters knows both teams are looking to prove something at this stage with a trip to the Sweet 16 on the line. “They’re playing for something,” Waters said of Arizona. “People are saying they don’t belong, and I think they’re trying to show the world they belong.” However, there is one difference between beating the Demon Deacons and facing the Wildcats. “Wake Forest was younger, and there were things that we could exploit because of their youth,” Waters said. “When I look at Arizona, this is an experienced group. They know what they’re trying to do, and I think they’re a little bit hungrier than Wake Forest was.”

Cleveland State is 5-0 SU in its last 5 games overall.
The OVER is 7-2 in Cleveland State's last 9 neutral site games.

Key Injuries - G D'Aundray Brown (knee) is questionable.

PROJECTED SCORE: 69 (Side Play of the Day)

Arizona (-3, O/U 134.5): The Wildcats had thought Cleveland State's upset of Butler in the Horizon League tourney title game might cost themselves a spot in the Big Dance, but now they are facing one of the most dangerous Cinderella teams left in the tournament. “All we knew is that before we got into the tournament, with them beating Butler, we thought they took one of our spots,” Arizona guard Nic Wise said. “Friday was an eye-opener - just to know that they’re a small-name school but they have big-name talent. You can’t come out soft, because they’ll come out fast and they’ll hit you hard.”

Arizona is 7-2 ATS in its last 9 games as a favorite.
The OVER is 8-2 in Arizona's last 10 games overall.

                      Key Injuries - NONE

                      PROJECTED SCORE: 66

West Region: #6 Marquette vs. #3 Missouri [CBS | 4:50 PM ET]

Marquette: The Golden Eagles have seen their last two games decided by one point apiece, showing a lot of heart despite playing without their best player Dominic James. Some could also argue Marquette head coach Buzz Williams is just happy to be playing in the second round of the NCAA tournament after taking over for Tom Crean, who left a talented team to take over an ailing Indiana program. “If you research my career path, and you figure out where I started and where I am today, there’s no way you could potentially, possibly in your wildest dreams, project that I’d be sitting here in this position,” said Williams.

Marquette is 4-8 ATS in its last 12 games overall.
The OVER is 9-2 in Marquette's last 11 NCAA tournament games.

Key Injuries - G Dominic James (foot) is OUT.

PROJECTED SCORE: 74 (OVER - Total Play of the Day)

Missouri (-4, O/U 147.5): The Tigers have won four straight games on neutral courts - including a Big 12 tourney title - and appear poised to make it to the Sweet 16 under head coach Mike Anderson, who has done a tremendous job turning around the program. Anderson saw Mizzou miss the Big Dance for the fifth straight season a year ago, but his patience and tough-love approach is finally starting to pay dividends. “I was hired to come in and win ballgames, I know that,” Anderson said. “I also was hired to, I guess, to clean a culture or to have a brand of basketball. To get kids educated, get kids to become productive citizens once they leave.”

Missouri is 11-3 ATS in its last 14 games overall.
The OVER is 7-1 in Missouri's last 8 NCAA tournament games.

                      Key Injuries - NONE

                      PROJECTED SCORE: 78

Edmonton Oilers at Minnesota Wild (-150, 5)

It seemed all the Edmonton Oilers needed was a change of scenery. The Oilers have won back-to-back road contests since dropping five of seven games.

Edmonton collected wins in Colorado and Chicago to open this current three-game road swing and can finish with a bang in Minnesota Sunday night. The Oilers are filling the nets, scoring 13 goals in those two victories.

"Those were two big points," Ales Kotalik told the press following the win over the Blackhawks. "We're on a good little roll here and we just have to keep it going."

As impressive as Edmonton's offensive surge is, the efforts between the pipes are going unheralded. Goaltender Dwayne Roloson turned away 27 shots and allowed just one goal to the Avalanche and stopped 43 shots in a 5-4 shootout win over Chicago.

                          Pick: Edmonton

Phoenix Coyotes at Anaheim Ducks (-210, 5.5)

By the time Sunday's game is over, the Ducks and Coyotes will be sick of each other. These two teams were tied after regulation and overtime Thursday, and had to settle in a shootout. Anaheim got the victory on Bobby Ryan's winner.

Phoenix is coming off a clash with Vancouver Saturday while the Ducks have three days to relax. They've picked up wins in three of their last four games, all of which have come in additional time. This current run is keeping Anaheim in the playoff picture. It is in 10th place in the West with 74 points and sits just three points behind Nashville for the final spot.

"I don't think this group ever really thought we were out of it,” Ryan told reporters. “We know it's not going to be an easy road. Some things have to happen for us, but ultimately we still control our own destiny."

Anaheim has won three of the four meeting with Phoenix this season.

                          Pick: Anaheim -210
