Pick ‘n’ Roll: NBA best bets
        -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Knicks at Orlando Magic (-12, 215)

When New York Knicks guard Nate Robinson and Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard squared off in the slam dunk contest over All-Star weekend, the 5-foot-9 Robinson came out on top after jumping over his 6-foot-11 counterpart.Less than two weeks later, Howard's size was way too much for Robinson and the Knicks.

The Magic will likely again rely heavily on Howard against the undersized Knicks as the teams open a home-and-home series Saturday night in Orlando.

Robinson defeated Howard in the dunk contest finals Feb. 14, leaping over Howard for one dunk that earned him a perfect score in the last round and helped him unseat the All-Star post player as the contest champion.R

obinson and the Knicks, though, couldn't handle Howard's size Feb. 25. Howard had 24 points and 21 rebounds to lead Orlando (50-18) to a 114-109 road victory. He also had four blocked shots against a small and overmatched New York frontline.

The Knicks (28-40) started an even smaller lineup in their last game Friday night. Robinson and point guard Chris Duhon started in the backcourt, with 6-foot-5 shooting guard Larry Hughes joining 6-foot-8 Wilson Chandler at forward. David Lee, who's 6-foot-9, remained at center.

New York coach Mike D'Antoni might be compelled to make some adjustments, however, after watching his team struggle through a 121-94 home loss to Sacramento, which had lost all 28 of its games against the Eastern Conference before Friday.Robinson had 19 points to lead New York, which shot 39.8 percent.

The Knicks, ranking near the top of the league with 105.6 points per game in their first season under D'Antoni, have been held to 92.0 during their three-game losing streak. After Friday's game, D'Antoni wondered if his players have hit a wall and laughed when asked if he could still envision a playoff push.

New York's in 12th place in the East, 3.5 games behind Chicago, which currently holds the eighth and final playoff spot.

"We can't make a shot, we don't have legs to get by people and we don't have legs to stop anybody," D'Antoni said. "Just nobody has any physical presence."

Magic coach Stan Van Gundy was far more pleased with his team's performance in a 106-80 win at Milwaukee on Wednesday night. Howard had 28 points, 12 rebounds and a career high-tying seven assists after being limited offensively in a loss to Cleveland the previous night.

"Coming off of yesterday, no hangover, great energy," Van Gundy said of Orlando's overall play. "Went up and down the court, played great defense - and Dwight was tremendous."It's really hard to argue with our competitiveness. I think that there's a lot of things that we still need to improve on, but our guys come out and play for the most part. I think in terms of that, we're about as consistent as any team in the league."

The Magic have won eight of their last 10 to pull within one game of Boston for second place in the East. They've also won five of six against the Knicks, with Howard posting three 20-20 games in that stretch.

        Pick: Over

Los Angeles Lakers at Chicago Bulls (+4, 211.5)

The Los Angeles Lakers have the NBA's best road record, and considering they completed a perfect six-game trip earlier this season, a seven-game stretch away from home shouldn't be too intimidating.

Starting the trip with a win, though, won't be nearly as easy as it once looked.

The Lakers will kick off a road trip critical to their hopes of earning home-court advantage throughout the playoffs Saturday night against the Chicago Bulls, who have strengthened their own playoff hopes by winning seven straight at the United Center.

Los Angeles (54-14) is well on its way to having home-court advantage in the Western Conference playoffs, but Cleveland has seized the best record in the league.

Should the Lakers need a big road win in the postseason, though, they should be in good shape to get it. Los Angeles is a league-best 23-9 away from home and went 6-0 on a road trip from Jan. 30-Feb. 8 that concluded with wins in Cleveland and Boston.

The Lakers, who won 114-106 over Golden State on Thursday, won't have to face anyone the caliber of the Cavaliers and Celtics on this trip. Atlanta is the only opponent they'll face that is currently above .500.

"It is good that it is coming up at this time of year," Kobe Bryant said. "If you go out on the road, basically it is us against the world so to speak so we are able to bond and connect and these type of road trips build great momentum."

Los Angeles won't have it easy in Chicago, though, where the Bulls (32-37) have slipped into the East's eighth playoff spot with their strong play at home.

Chicago hasn't been beating just anyone during its seven-game run at the United Center, either. The Bulls toppled Denver, Orlando and Houston in their first three home wins, then knocked off New Orleans and the Celtics in the past week.

Perhaps more impressive than the win over the defending champions was Chicago's ability to dig out a road win the next night. The Bulls had lost seven in a row on the road prior to Wednesday's game, when they went into Oklahoma City and got 25 points from Derrick Rose in a 103-96 victory.

"I knew that my team needed me to make plays. I didn't know what type of plays, but it ended up being scoring plays," said Rose, who made all 10 shots he attempted in the second half.

Rose played well in his first game against the Lakers, recording team highs of 25 points and nine assists when Chicago visited Staples Center on Nov. 18. The Bulls, though, couldn't stop Pau Gasol, who scored 34 points in a 116-109 Los Angeles win.

        Pick: Lakers

Over last six years, #4 seeds are 3-11 vs the spread when facing the #5 seed in this round- not really sure why.

Longhorns are 1-3 as an underdog this year, losing by 15 at Oklahoma, 9 at Okla State, 10 at Kansas, winning at Baylor.

Gonzaga held Akron without hoop for 12+ minutes midway thru second half when they trailed Zips by 6, in game they won by 13; only team to beat Zags since New Year's Eve is Memphis- Zags covered five of their last seven as a favorite. Western Kentucky won last eight games, but is just 6-5 outside Sun Belt, with four of the five losses by 13+ points. #12 seeds are 5-3 vs spread as an underdog in this round the last seven years.

West Region: #5 Purdue vs. #4 Washington [CBS | 5:40 PM ET]

Purdue: Robbie Hummel has led the Boilermakers within a win of the Sweet 16 despite playing with a fractured back that still requires a small hard-shell brace during gamedays. Hummel was named the most outstanding player of the Big Ten tournament after totaling 48 points and 28 rebounds in three games, and he followed that up with nine points and 12 rebounds in a 61-56 win over Northern Iowa on Thursday. “I’ve gotten to the point where I really don’t have any pain,” said Hummel.

Purdue is 11-4 ATS in its last 15 Saturday games.
The OVER is 7-2 in Purdue's last 9 games as an underdog.

Washington (-1, O/U 139): The Huskies rebounded nicely from a disappointing loss to Arizona State in the Pac-10 tournament semifinals, beating Mississippi State 71-58 in the first round of the NCAA tournament on Thursday. Quincy Pondexter scored a season-high 23 points as he and his teammates took advantage of early foul trouble by Bulldogs big man Jarvis Varnado. “It was very noticeable,” Pondexter said. “I didn’t have to alter my shots.” Washington also thrived in front of the home fans at Portland's Rose Garden.

Washington is 7-1 SU in its last 8 games overall.
The OVER is 16-5 in Washington's last 21 games overall.

East Region: #7 Texas vs. #2 Duke [CBS | 8:15 PM ET]

Texas: The Longhorns will be looking to make it to the Sweet 16 for the sixth time in eight years, but they will need to overcome a tough home-court edge for Duke in the process. A good start could help them achieve their goal. “There are some staples in their program that they do - I mean, obviously, every game they come out extremely aggressive to start with,” Texas head coach Rick Barnes said on Friday. “They’re going to apply a great deal of pressure in the first four or five minutes of the game and see how you’re going to handle that.”

Texas is 4-10-1 ATS in its last 15 games overall.
Texas is 0-3 ATS in the last 3 meetings.

Duke (-7.5, O/U 140): The Blue Devils are coming off their biggest NCAA tournament win since beating Seton Hall by 28 points en route to their last Final Four appearance. Whether or not they can continue their strong play remains to be seen, but the team definitely believes they can beat anybody right now. “Coming off a game where we did win pretty big, it’s a confidence-booster for our team,” Duke forward Lance Thomas said. “Everybody is in the mindset believing that we can win. Not thinking about the past. We’ve been playing really well. Very good basketball recently. So just taking that and running with it will be big for us.”

Duke is 6-3 ATS in its last 9 games overall.
The UNDER is 10-3 in Duke's last 13 neutral site games.
