    Daily Sports Roundup

    Tuesday, March 17

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: LeBron James takes on Dwight Howard, Martin Brodeur goes for a record, and the Play-In Game starts up the Big Dance.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

Two of the Eastern Conference's best teams meet on the hardwood on Tuesday night as LeBron James and his Cavaliers get a visit from Dwight Howard and the Magic. The Magic and Cavs met in Orlando back on January 29, with the home side rolling to a 99-88 win as 5-point favorites. Howard had 22 points and 18 boards on the night, while James had 23 points, eight boards, and eight assists.

The Celtics will be in Chicago for a St. Patrick's Day battle with the Bulls on Tuesday, while Atlanta will play host to Sacramento. As well, it'll be Detroit at Dallas, Minnesota at San Antonio, Washington at Utah, the Clippers at Golden State, and Philadelphia at the Lakers. Kobe Bryant and company got past the Sixers 114-102 when they met in Philly in December; L.A. was a 9-point favorite.

    The march toward Madness . . .

The Field of 64 for March Madness will find out its final participant on Tuesday night after the buzzer sounds at the end of the annual Play-In Game. This year's Play-In Game will feature Alabama State from the Southwestern Athletic Conference and Morehead State from the Ohio Valley Conference. The Hornets beat Jackson State 65-58 in the SWAC title game on Saturday, with Andrew Hayles tossing in a team-high 17 points in the victory. The Eagles got past Austin Peay 67-65 in double overtime back on March 7 to claim the Ohio Valley title. Kenneth Faried picked up 15 points and grabbed 10 boards in that contest. The winner of Tuesday night's Play-In Game will go on to face Louisville this week.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

The National Hockey League is busy on Tuesday night with 11 games on the schedule. Highlighting that action is Chicago at New Jersey, with Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur gunning for his NHL-record 552nd win in the regular season. Brodeur tied Patrick Roy's regular-season record of 551 victories on Saturday, as he made 23 saves in a 3-1 triumph over the Canadiens in Montreal.

Also on the slate for Tuesday: Philadelphia at Detroit, Washington at Florida, Toronto at Tampa Bay, Atlanta at Pittsburgh, Buffalo at Ottawa, the Rangers at Montreal, Colorado at Minnesota, St. Louis at Edmonton, San Jose at Phoenix, and Dallas at Vancouver. The Stars kept themselves right in the ***** of the Western Conference playoff hunt with a 3-2 win over the Wild on Saturday night.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

After taking a one-week break the Sprint Cup Series will get back on the track this weekend in the Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway. Jeff Gordon holds down top spot in the driver standings heading into that event, but he hasn't visited victory lane yet this year - Kurt Busch (Atlanta), Kyle Busch (Las Vegas), and Matt Kenseth (Fontana and Daytona) have grabbed the four checkered flags.

Meanwhile, the 2009 Formula 1 season will get underway at the end of the month, with the Australian Grand Prix on March 29. Lewis Hamilton won the drivers championship in 2008, and he also picked up the victory in last year's edition of the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne. Nick Heidfeld, Nico Rosberg, Fernando Alonso, and Heikki Kovalainen rounded out the top five in that event.

Tuesday's List of 13: Random thoughts on a late winter night

        13) Since 2003, #9 seeds are 13-11 vs #8 seeds. 12 of the 24 games were decided by five or less points.

        12) Arizona somehow snuck into this year's tournament; since 1985, Wildcats are 14-10 in first round games, 0-7 if they're lower than #4 seed. Arizona won its national title as a #4 seed in 1997.

        11) Little odd that both Arizona, Arizona State are both playing in Miami this week. Better than getting sent to Philly to play Villanova in the second round, which is UCLA's destinaton.

        10) Last #15 seed to beat a 2-seed was Hampton over Iowa State in 2001; in 28 games since, the 15-seed came within five points total of four times-- Belmont lost 71-70 to Duke last March.

        9) #1 seeds are 104-0 vs 16-seeds since the tournament went to 64 teams; they went 3-1 vs spread in first round LY, after being 3-8-1 vs spread in first round the previous three seasons.

        8) In the last nine tournaments, Bucknell ('05), Northwestern State ('06) are only #14-seeds to beat a #3 seed.

        7) Stephen F. Austin leads whole country in 3-point defense; their opponents make just 26.6% of their 3-pointers.

        6) Beware West Virginia: the #11-seed in West has beaten the 6-seed in each of the last four tournaments.

        5) Illinois' 38 NCAA tournament wins are most by any team that has never won a national title.

        4) Last time there was an NCAA tournament without both Kentucky and Indiana was way back in 1979.

        3) Duke made the Final Four four of last five times they were 2-seed, but this is first time they've been a 2-seed since 1997.

        2) Last time Missouri Tigers played in Boise was 1995, when they had UCLA beat in second round game, before Tyus Edney hit a shot at buzzer to propel Bruins to next round, and they eventually won the national title.

        1) Wisconsin lost 12 games, but led in the last 6:00 in nine of those 12 games. Interesting contrast in style between Badgers and Florida State; one team takes it time, one wants to go like hell.

Orlando Magic at Cleveland Cavaliers [7 PM ET]

Magic: Dwight Howard's name has been lost in the shuffle of NBA MVP talk this season despite his dominant play in the paint for Orlando this season. Howard totaled 28 points and 20 rebounds in a 105-87 rout of Utah on Sunday, prompting Jazz forward Carlos Boozer to call him an MVP candidate. Howard's coach agreed. “His effort lately, has been very, very good,” Magic head coach Stan Van Gundy said. “He’s coming out and playing with great energy and intensity. When he does that, it sets the tone.”

Magic are 8-1 ATS in the last 9 meetings.
The UNDER is 7-2 in the last 9 meetings.

Key Injuries - PG Jameer Nelson (shoulder) is OUT.

PROJECTED SCORE: 96 (Side Play of the Day)

Cavs (-6, O/U 194): Cleveland has lost just once at home this season, and that came against the defending Western Conference champion Lakers. The Cavs will be facing the top road team in the East though in the Magic, who have won the last three meetings overall as well as the last three trips to Cleveland. “They’re a very good road team, we’re a very good home team,” Cavs star LeBron James said. “We’re looking forward to the challenge and I bet those guys are looking forward to the challenge also. We know how good of a team we are at home. We take it personal and want to win every game on our home court.”

Cavs are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games vs. Southeast Division.
The UNDER is 7-1 in Cleveland's last 8 home games.

Key Injuries - C Ben Wallace (leg) is OUT.

              PROJECTED SCORE: 98

Pick ‘n’ Roll: NBA best bets
                -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Detroit Pistons at Dallas Mavericks (-5.5, 188.5)

Detroit has lost three of its last five after winning four straight to start March. As a result, the Pistons are now fighting off clubs for one of the last two spots in the Eastern Conference playoffs.

Tuesday’s road tilt in Dallas is a virtual must-win for the Pistons.

The eighth-place Mavericks, who are hoping to move up in the standings, are just a couple games back of the third-place Rockets.

But the Mavericks have lost two straight, including an embarrassing 119-110 loss to the Golden State Warriors. They are just 14-18 against the spread (ATS) at home this season.

“Yeah, that’s a sign of not a good team if you don’t take care of your business in these types of games,” Dallas forward Dirk Nowitzki told reporters.

The Pistons should play with more urgency Tuesday, especially against a struggling Dallas club, to avoid falling out of the playoff picture.

                Pick: Pistons

Los Angeles Clippers at Golden State Warriors (NA)

The Clippers haven’t won back-to-back games since February. Expect that sluggish streak to extend through Tuesday.

Golden State, meanwhile, is 3-1 ATS in its last four overall.

Monta Ellis, who missed five months after injuring his ankle last summer in a scooter accident, has averaged more than 24 points in his last three outings.

“With everybody back I think we showed what we can do,” Ellis told reporters after beating the Mavericks. “I felt like the old Monta. My shot has always been there. It’s not something I was worried about. What’s important is I feel good out there.”

L.A., meanwhile, is 1-5 ATS in its last six visits to Oakland.

                Pick: Warriors

                      Ice Picks: NHL best bets
                      -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

St. Louis Blues at Edmonton Oilers (-130, 5.5)

The Oilers will have to stop racking up overtime losses if they want to hold on to the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference. Edmonton is 1-1-4 over its last six games and those overtime losses could come back to haunt the club - especially Saturday’s 3-2 defeat against the struggling Avalanche.

The Oilers had plenty of chances to put the game away early, but failed to capitalize on a breakaway and a couple of two-on-ones in the opening five minutes on the contest.

Edmonton will have to put together a more convincing performance in a must-win game for both teams.

The Blues showed resiliency when they bounced back from a 5-2 loss to Detroit Saturday with a 5-3 victory over the Minnesota Wild the following day.

“We’ve been playing pretty well the last little while,” Andy McDonald told reporters. “This is the way we’re going to have to play. We can’t afford to lose hockey games, especially two in a row. We let (the Detroit loss) go after last night, turned it around and got prepared for today.”

Expect the Blues to show the same level of focus Tuesday night.

                      Pick: Blues

New York Rangers at Montréal Canadiens (-130, 5.5)

The Habs were hoping the firing of head coach Guy Carbonneau would help boost the team’s inconsistent effort, but Montreal is only 1-1-1 since the shake up.

Montréal had a horrendous start Saturday against the New Jersey Devils taking five penalties in the first period and allowing two early goals as a result. They ended up falling 3-1.

The poor performance will not help quiet the number of angry fans and sports commentators calling Carbonneau’s firing unjust and motivated by an anti-francophone sentiment. The controversy can only be a distraction for a team that desperately needs to come together before the end of the season.

The Rangers have also known ups and downs this year, but the controversial element to the team appears to be beneficial. Sean Avery managed to score a pair of power play goals while being his normal pesky self in a 4-1 victory over Philadelphia Sunday.

                      Pick: Rangers
