Play-in game
Alabama State just won SWAC title Saturday, while Morehead State is rested team, having won OVC title a week before. ASU lost three games vs SEC teams, by 4-5-9 points, so they have some ability, playing slow pace- they're a solid defensive team (6th in US in effective FG%), but play from a league that rarely wins non-league games. Morehead was 0-6 after losing 72-71 to Grambling of SWAC Nov 29; they also lost four in row to end regular season, but recovered in OVC tourney, winning final in double overtime after being down 7 at the half. Dayton is neutral site, but not too far from Morehead, KY.

NIT games
Davidson is 6-4 outside Southern Conference, beating West Virginia on neutral court; they played lot of good teams, now face a South Carolina that got upset in first game of SEC tourney. Gamecocks lost 82-80 in OT at Charleston, beat Wofford by 17, in games vs SoCon opponents.

Rhode Island is 11-4 in last 15 games; they lost last two games by total of five points. Rams won five of last seven road games- they shoot well, play lot of high scoring games. Niagara lost MAAC final on Siena's home court- they're 12-2 in last 14 games- they beat St Bonaventure of A-14 by 18 points on road Dec 23.

George Mason hasn't played since losing 71-50 to VCU nine days ago in CAA tourney, which snapped Patriots' six-game win streak. Penn State is disappointed not to be in NCAAs, but their non-league schedule was built to save the coach's job, not to impress the committee. Lions are 2-0 vs CAA teams this season, beating Wm&Mary by 14, Towson by 24.

UAB lost 70-67 to Tulsa Friday; Notre Dame lost to West Virginia in Big East tournament Wednesday. Blazers are 1-2 vs Big East teams this season, losing by 20 at Louisville, 7 at Cincinnati, beating South Florida in OT by a point. Irish went 2-3 in last five games (beat St John's and Rutgers)- they covered two of last eight games as a favorite.

UNLV lost at home to San Diego State Thursday; Kentucky got smoked in SEC tourney by LSU Friday. Rebels have point guard who looks for his shot first, second, then maybe to pass- they won at Louisville 56-55 Dec 31, when PG Adams didn't play. This game isn't in Rupp Arena-- they have HS state tourney there. Kentucky lost five of last six games.

New Mexico, Nebraska both fell flat in first conference tournament tilt; Huskers lost four of last six games- they won 62-50 at TCU of MWC Nov 19. Lobos lost 86-78 at Texas Tech of Big 12 Dec 20- their loss to Wyoming in conference tourney their snapped five-game winning streak. Huskers beat Creighton at home, Lobos lost to Bluejays in Omaha.

San Diego State lost MWC title game by a hoop late Saturday vs Utah; Aztecs play great defense, are hosting Weber State squad that lost home game to Montana State in Big Sky tournament. Weber lost at BYU by 30 points, Utah by 10 in its MWC games- they're 12-1 in their last 13 games. San Diego State won by 11 at Northern Colorado of Big Sky.

Washington State plays well together, will be tough out for disappointed St Mary's club that deserves to be in NCAAs; Mills isn't 100% yet. not sure what Gaels' mental state is, playing cohesive Pac-10 foe. Wazzu is 4-2 in last six games- they lost by 22 at home to Gonzaga, a team that beat St Mary's three times. Gaels won by five at Oregon Dec 17 (-3).

CBA tournament
Long road trip for Northeastern team that lost five of its last six games; they play good defense but struggle to score (average 53 ppg in last three games)- Huskies are just 6-5 out of the CAA. Wyoming upset the Lobos in MWC tourney; they're 5-3 in last eight games- they went 5-3 at home in conference play, and 8-3 in non-league games vs D-I teams.

Nevada lost at home to Utah State in WAC title game Saturday; they've lost seven home games this season. UTEP beat St Mary's, split pair vs New Mexico State of WAC; they're 8-4 in last dozen games- they lost in OT in C-USA tourney, to Houston. Nevada won five of last six games; three of their last four losses were by three or less points.

College Insider tournament
Kent State lost to Buffalo in MAC tourney; their last six games were all decided by six or less points- they're 6-7 in non-league games. Oakland led for 39:00 against North Dakota State in Summit title game, lost by a hoop at end- they have terrific junior point guard, senior F who shoots 42% from floor. Grizzlies beat Toledo of MAC by 9, EMichigan by 13.

Liberty beat Virginia, lost just 80-75 at Clemson, so they're pretty good at 22-11, with younger Curry leading team that makes 39% of its treys. Rider lost in double OT in MAAC semis vs Niagara; they haven't been on court in nine days, which helps, but they're 6-5 outside the MAAC, not the greatest record. Broncs won four of their last five games.

Washington State Cougars at St. Mary's Gaels (-4.5, 120)

It's time to pick up the pieces in Moraga.

The Gaels' bubble popped on selection Sunday, prompting numerous arguments about the role of mid-major programs in the national tournament. The debate turned ugly on ESPN, when analyst Jay Bilas and commentator Dick Vitale traded blows in a shouting match.

St. Mary's worked hard in the regular season, playing almost all its non-conference contests on the road. However, wins over ho-hum programs Kent State, Oregon, San Diego State and Southern Illinois, along with two losses to Gonzaga, fell short of impressing the selection committee.

"It's tough," center Omar Samhan told the San Francisco Chronicle. "We're still in the NIT; I can't even think like that right now. I'm heartbroken."

Getting over that letdown will be even tougher with a feisty Washington State program waiting in the opening round of the NIT. The Cougars finished strong in the Pac-10 regular season with wins over tournament-bound UCLA, Arizona and Arizona State.

Tony Bennett's squad is the top defensive program in the country and allowed just under 60 points per game during conference play. Wazzou has also shown a fair for offense in recent weeks. Center Aron Baynes is playing his best basketball all season and big-shot taker and maker Taylor Rochestie can explode on any night.

Pick: Washington State

Davidson Wildcats at South Carolina Gamecocks (-3.5, 152.5)

After what the Wildcats did last year, shouldn't they just get a free pass to the national tournament?

Davidson got a little too big for its britches in non-conference play, losing to high NCAA seeds Duke, Oklahoma, Purdue and Butler. They now face a South Carolina program that would have gone dancing if it weren't for a down year in the SEC and Mississippi State's upset win in the league tournament.

The Gamecocks had a slim hope of making the field of 65 but weren't expecting a spot in the national tournament. South Carolina stumbled down the stretch, losing to the SEC better programs and lost in the upstart Bulldogs in the conference tournament.

“This team has accomplished a whole lot this year, and I think it exceeded a lot of expectations," coach Darrin Horn told reporters. "The history would tell you that if you're 10-6 in the SEC and divisional co-champ, there is a great possibility that you will play in the tournament. And that just wasn't the case this year."

The Cats and Cocks have history. South Carolina leads the all-time series 39-25 SU and is 24-6 against Davidson at home.

Duquesne lost in finals of A-14 final, after stumbling to 4-5 finish to the regular season; Dukes lost 95-72 at Duke in their only game against ACC foe- they beat Radford (coached by Seth Greenberg's brother) 94-75, on Dec 10. Hokies are 1-1 vs A-14 teams, beating Richmond 62-48, losing to Xavier on half-court shot at buzzer on a neutral floor.

Miami is 4-8 in last dozen games, with last three losses by 13-10-18 pts; they split two games vs Big East, losing by 13 to UConn (+4) on neutral floor, winning by 14 at St John's (-4.5). Providence lost at BC 81-76 in its only game vs ACC foe- they're 6-3 in last nine games as a favorite.

Florida is in NIT second straight year, after winning consecutive NCAA titles; they're 5-7 in last dozen games, but went 12-2 outside SEC, with 78-57 win vs Stetson of Atlantic Sun, a team Jacksonville beat by 23-15 points this year. Bowling Green is 10-4 in last 14 games, covering five of last six tries as an underdog; they lost 78-65 at Illinois State in only game vs MVC foe. Creighton has been off since losing 11 days ago in MVC semis, ending 11-game win streak; Bluejays are 3-6 in last nine games as home favorite.

Auburn won eight of last ten games, covering last five tries as a favorite- their loss to Tennessee in SEC semis ended 10-game spread win streak. UT-Martin is one of few top seeds to lose in conference tourney- they lost 91-64 at Tennessee in only game vs SEC opponent. Skyhawks are 3-1 vs spread in last four games as an underdog.

Northwestern lost last two games, scoring 47-53 points, after being 8-9 in Big 11; they went 4-5 as Big 11 road dog, covering last three chances. Wildcats beat SMU of C-USA, 66-55. Tulsa won seven of its last eight games, is 5-0-1 in last six games as favorite- they lost 48-44 to Illinois on a neutral court, in its only game vs Big 11 opponent.

Richmond lost 76-71 at Syracuse in only game vs Big East foe; they're 3-5 vs spread in their last eight games as a favorite.

Wichita State won its last seven home games (4-3 vs spread); they're 6-5 outside MVC, beating NCAA teams Cleveland State, Siena. Buffalo lost in MAC finals; they lost 64-49 at Evansville in only game vs MVC foe. Bulls play good defense, holding 10 of last 13 opponents under 66 pts.

Green Bay is experienced team that went 9-0 at home in Horizon, with eight wins by 9+ points (6-2 as home favorite); somehow, they lost to a D-II team on neutral court in November. but was 9-4 outside Horizon. Vermont tied for top in America East; they're 14-2 in last 16 games, and play fast (#50 tempo team out of 344).

Charleston lost finals of SoCon tourney on other team's court; they went 8-2 outside league, beating South Carolina, losing to Temple by 5. Troy was on 12-1 run before getting beat by South Alabama 78-75 in Sun Belt tourney- they are 4-7 in non-league games. Cougars won six of their last eight games.

Cougars went 3-5 in last eight road games.

Boise State went 3-5 in last eight games; they were 4-4 as road dog in its WAC games, losing on road by 14-14-4-6-14 points- they went 9-4 in its non-WAC games. Stanford is 4-10 in last 14 games; they were 5-1 as a Pac-10 home favorite, and went 10-0 outside Pac-10, but Northridge and Northwestern are only ones of the 10 victims to make postseason.

College Insider tournament
Mt St Mary's tied for second in NEC; they lost 72-60 to George Mason, in only game vs CAA foe. James Madison is 9-4 outside the CAA; they lost four of last five games, with losses by 3-18-14-8 points. Dukes are struggling on offense, scoring just 56.7 ppg in last three games-- they are 6-4-1 vs spread in last eleven games as a favorite.

Austin Peay had 7-point lead at halftime of OVC title game, but lost in 2OTs; Governors lost 70-62 at Evansville, 71-54 at Drake in its couple of games vs MVC opponents. Bradley was 5-2 as MVC home favorite; they beat OVC doormat SE Missouri State 75-62 Dec 14 (-18). Braves went 7-5 outside Missouri Valley Conference.

Belmont is usually best team in Atlantic Sun; they tied for 2nd this year, lost by 14 at Pitt, just 2 at Tennessee, so they're not bad, a senior-laden team that gets 39% of its points beyond arc. Evansville lost five of last six games, but was 6-3 at home in Valley games- they are 9-2 outside the Missouri Valley Conference, beating Western Kentucky by 32.

Portland hasn't played in 11 days; they lost three of last four games, are 5-3 as road underdog. Pilots beat Cal-Davis 75-72 in only game against a Big West opponent. Pacific just lost OT game in Big West final Saturday night, which ended five-game Tiger win streak. Pacific won its last five home games- they went 3-2 against WCC teams this season, but didn't play the three best teams in that league.

Drake lost last three games and 11 of last 15 games; they were 9-2 back in pre-conference play, and was 5-3 as MVC road dog, losing away tilts by 11-4-21-16-12-2 points. Idaho won five of last seven games, won six of eight WAC home games; they're 4-3 against spread as a fave this year.

Thursday afternoon
Northridge lost both starting guards to off-field incidents after starting its season 0-5 vs D-I teams, losing to Stanford by 18, New Mexico by 11, Rider by 13, UCLA by 18, but Matadors wound up winning both regular season and Big West conference tourney. Memphis won its last four first round NCAA Games by 16-16-15-24 points. Big West teams lost three in a row in NCAAs, losing by 8-15-35 points. Memphis is 13-4 against spread in its last 17 games.

9-seed Texas A&M (-1) beat BYU 67-62 in first round LY; same exact scenario here, except Cougars are 10-2 in last 12 games, with two losses by combined total of three points. Cougars are 12-2 out of conference, losing by 7 to Wake Forest, 1 to Arizona State in Phoenix. Northern Iowa won last five games after 1-4 February skid; they lost at Iowa by 19 Dec 9, in only game vs Big 11 opponent; Panthers only have one senior in their rotation, play slowish (318th) pace- they covered last nine tries as an underdog. Purdue won Big 11 tourney Sunday, plays on Thursday afternoon, a quick turnaround; they're 5-6 vs spread in last 11 games as a favorite. Boilers (-25) beat Indiana State by 14 in their only game vs MVC opponent this season.

North Carolina won last seven first round games (3-2-2 vs spread); they waxed NC-Asheville 116-48 Nov 30. Radford beat their conference rival Asheville three times, but all three were close games. Radford lost by 2 to Virginia, by 22 to Virginia, in its two games vs ACC foes- they also got crushed by 35 at West Virginia. Lawson isn't supposed to play here, as Tar Heels try to get his foot healthier for when they play better foes. #1 seeds are 6-9-1 vs spread in first round games the last four years.

California lost four of last six games, allowing 77.8 ppg in last five; they are 11-2 outside Pac-10, losing 80-77 to Florida State on neutral floor, in its only game vs ACC foe. Bears lost 93-66 at Mizzou Dec 7, are back in Missouri again- they shoot 43.4% beyond arc, best in nation. Maryland is 4-5 in last nine games; they're mediocre defending treys. Cal starts four juniors and a sophomore, Terps three juniors and a senior. Maryland is 11-3 outside ACC, losing to Morgan State at home.

UConn is 1-9 vs spread in last 10 first round games; they haven't won a postseason game of any kind since '06, are coming off epic six-OT loss to Syracuse in Big East tourney. Huskies whacked Western Carolina 81-55 in season opener; Western split pair of games with Chattanooga-- Mocs are 18-16, won SoCon tourney on their home floor- they lost by 39 at Tennessee, 28 at Missouri, 12 to Memphis, 27 to USC. If UConn has anything in its tank, this could be ugly.

Mississippi State won, covered last five games; they have to travel long way, play Thursday after winning SEC title Sunday. Thursday night games
Michigan split pair of games with Duke, lost 75-70 at Maryland in three games vs ACC teams; they're 3-3 in last six games and 4-2 vs spread last six games as an underdog. Clemson won by hoop at Illinois in only game vs Big 11 foe- Tigers lost four of last five games, allowing 91 ppg in last two games. Wolverines are young team that plays slowish pace, and an unusual 1-3-1 defense. Over last four seasons, favorites are 13-3 against the spread in 7-10 games.

Minnesota is 4-7 in last 11 games; they're 0-8 vs spread in its last eight games as an underdog. Gophers are 12-0 outside Big 11 (beat Louisville 70-64 in Phoenix)- they're young team that plays slowish pace (219th). Miami Hurricanes at Providence Friars (-2.5, 147.5)

This was supposed to be a home game for the fourth-seeded Miami Hurricanes. But due to scheduling conflicts, the opening round contest was moved to Providence, giving the No. 5 Friars a home-court edge.

The Canes have a lot on their plate for Wednesday's game. Not only are they on the road, where they went 4-6 SU, but they're also dealing with the disappointment of not making the NCAA tournament.

Coach Frank Haith told reporters Tuesday that his starting lineup would undergo changes and that players will have to earn their playing time in the postseason.

Miami's two biggest question marks are their stars Jack McClinton and Dwayne Collins. The upperclassmen combined for more than 40 percent of the Hurricanes offense this year but disappeared in the ACC tournament.

Collins scored just four points and McClinton struggled for only nine points in the opening round loss to Virginia Tech. Those poor performances aren't just confined to that one game. Collins has scored double figures once in the past nine games and McClinton is shooting just over 34 percent and has failed to scored more than 13 points just twice in the past six contests.

"I think our role guys were starting to play well up until the ACC Tournament," Haith told the Palm Beach Post. "We needed our two big guns, (Collins) and Jack, to play to their potential, and that has not happened."

On top of those struggles, Miami can't look past a Big-East tested Providence squad. All the talk in the local papers is focusing on a possible second-round matchup between the Canes and rival Florida Gators.

Illinois State Redbirds at Kansas State Wildcats (-6.5, 137)

The Wildcats will welcome a familiar foe when the Redbirds come to Manhattan Wednesday.

Illinois State head coach Tim Jankovich is a KSU alumni and was a former assistant at Kansas before taking the job in Normal two year ago. His assistant coach and athletic director are also K-State alums, so the scouting report on the Wildcats is pretty thorough.

The Redbirds are a dangerous team. They led the Missouri Valley Conference with 750 3-point attempts on the season and buried trifectas at over 40 percent during league play.

Illinois State could easily be in the NCAA instead of the NIT. They defeated Creighton in the MVC tournament semifinals but lost by three points in overtime to Northern Iowa in the championship game.

Oregon transfer Chamberlain Oguchi led the team with 15 points per game and shot 39 percent from beyond the arc this year. Junior Osiris Eldridge is another deep threat. He was on fire during the MVC tournament and is a 36 percent shooter from 3-point range.
