    Daily Sports Roundup

    Monday, March 16

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Rockets look to blast past the Hornets, the Caps meet the Thrashers, and college hoops fans start filling out brackets.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

Both the Rockets and the Hornets will be looking to get back into the win column on Monday night when the two teams meet in New Orleans in one of five games on the NBA schedule. Houston was upended 88-85 by the Spurs on Saturday despite a 21-point performance from Ron Artest. New Orleans was blasted 97-79 by the Bulls on Saturday, with Chris Paul leading the team's attack with 29 points.

Also on the NBA's schedule for Monday: Toronto at Charlotte, Portland at Memphis, New Jersey at Denver, and San Antonio at Oklahoma City. The Spurs got 28 points and eight assists from Tony Parker in that win over the rival Rockets, and they beat the Thunder 109-104 at home in their first-ever meeting in December. The Thunder fell 106-95 to the Suns in their game Saturday night.

    The march toward Madness . . .

College hoops gets a night off on Monday before action resumes again on Tuesday with the Play-In Game between Alabama State and Morehead State. The field for this year's Big Dance was announced on Sunday night's Selection Show, with Louisville, Pittsburgh, North Carolina, and Connecticut earning the top seeds for the tournament. Those teams will see their first tournament action on Thursday and Friday when March Madness finally gets underway in earnest.

There are actually three other postseason tournaments vying for your attention this year, most notably the Postseason NIT which will stage first-round matchups on Tuesday and Wednesday and eventually wrap up at Madison Square Garden on April 2. As well, there's the College Basketball Invitational, which also has first-round games Tuesday and Wednesday and concludes March 30-April 3 with a three-game Championship Series. Finally, there's the new CollegeInsider.com tourney, with games starting Tuesday/Wednesday and a championship March 31.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

The Capitals will be gunning for their fourth straight victory on Monday night when they play on the road in Atlanta in one of just two games on the National Hockey League schedule. Washington made it three straight wins on Saturday, holding off the Hurricanes for a 5-4 victory. The Thrashers have been red hot as well; they knocked off the Sabres 4-3 on Saturday for their fifth consecutive win.

The other game on the slate will take place on the west coast, with the Kings playing host to the Predators. Los Angeles fell 2-1 to the Sharks in a shootout on Saturday, with Erik Ersberg stopping 38 of 39 San Jose shots on the night. Nashville is coming off a 2-0 win over the Coyotes on Saturday night, as Pekka Rinne stopped all 18 shots he faced and J.P. Dumont had the game-winning goal.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

The World Baseball Classic continues on Monday with a game between Venezuela and Puerto Rico at Dolphin Stadium in Miami. The Venezuelans toppled the Cinderella team from the Netherlands 3-1 on Saturday, while the Puerto Ricans blasted the United States 11-1 in their first game of the second round. The winner of that Monday matchup advances to Wednesday's pool final. The other WBC game on Monday will take place at San Diego's PETCO Park, and will be an elimination game between the losers of the late Sunday contests.

      Six-pack for Monday

Elsewhere in the world this weekend........

-- Jay Cutler's family owns three properties in Denver; two of the three are up for sale; lot of drama in the Mile High City, as Broncos have alientated their star QB, never a wise thing to do.

-- Francisco Rodriguez recorded a 4-out save for Venezuela against Netherlands Saturday, his first 4-out save since July 1, 2007.

-- Purdue lost its last eight overtime games.

-- 53 of the 80 golfers at Doral this weekend were from countries other than this one. Has Eldrick Woods killed golf in America?

-- Phil Mickelson was treated for heat exhaustion Saturday, but still had enough to win another tournament Sunday.

-- Mascots of Utah State, New Mexico State got into a scuffle late in their game Friday; someone paid the Utah State mascot $100 to rip the mustache off New Mexico State's mascot. Chaos ensued.

Friday's List of 13: Wrapping up a great day of college hoop....

Monday's List of 13: First impressions of the Field of 65........

As week goes on, we'll get more in-depth with the basketball games; here are some initial impressions from the field of 65.

        13) Looks like Arizona, Wisconsin were last teams to get in; Badgers got in despite a six-game losing streak in midseason. Arizona lost five of their last six games, and still got in. My biggest problem was with St Mary's getting left out, while Dayton got a bid; thats just me.

        12) Seven of 12 ACC teams got in; seven of 16 Big East teams got in and seven of the Big 11 teams got in.

        11) Not fond of Villanova getting to play in Philly; they usually play games in that building, but didn't this year, because they knew there were NCAA games there this year. I mean, at least make them leave their own city.

        10) I thought Chattanooga would be in the play-in game, being 18-16 and winning conference tournament at home. In my humble opinion, the play-in game should be the last two at-large teams, not automatic bid teams, but some of the lower major teams like the play-in game, since it gives them two hours of national TV exposure they cannot get at any other point in the season.

        9) Eight head coaches are in the tournament for the first time.

        8) I think its gutless of the committee not to identify who teams were that got knocked out when upsets like Mississippi State's occur. It is interesting to know who got KO'd when these upsets occured.

        7) Cal State-Northridge deserves mention for winning Big West title after losing both their top scorer and point guard during the season. It just never happens, losing two key players during the season and still staying the course and coming out on top. Good for them.

        6) Siena of the MAAC got a #9 seed, the highest seed a MAAC ever got, other than when LaSalle got #8-4 seeds in 1989-90. Saints won a game in tournament LY, are just a 3-point dog to Ohio St. in Dayton.

        5) If you care about such things, note that UConn is 1-9 vs spread in its last ten first round games, and the one game they covered was by a half-point, when they beat BYU 58-53 (-4.5) in 2003. Good news for UConn is that the two years they won national titles, they came out of the West region, so they have that going for them.

        4) Speaking of BYU, they play Texas A&M in the 8-9 game out west kind of like last year, when they played Texas A&M in the 8-9 game out west. Aggies won last year's game, 67-62.

        3) Pitt is going to play either Oklahoma State or Tennessee in second round, a really tough second round game for a #1 seed.

        2) Big East has put one team in the Final Four the last four seasons.

        1) You'll scoff at me, but North Dakota State fans are going to paint Minneapolis green this weekend; they put 35,000 fans in Metrodome for a football game couple of years back. Located 3.5 hours away, the Bison have eight seniors in their top 10 players- they'll beat Kansas.

Houston Rockets at New Orleans Hornets [8 PM ET]

Rockets: Houston has dropped two of three with both losses coming at home against the top two teams in the Western Conference. The Rockets had won 11 of 13 and are still battling New Orleans and San Antonio for the Southwest Division title. “I would like to say that we have it all figured out in late-game situations, but we’re still learning our way,” Houston forward Shane Battier said. “We’ve won a lot of games on effort and that’s good, but we need to win games intellectually.” The Rockets have averaged just 74 points on 35.1 percent shooting in losing the last two road meetings with the Hornets.

Rockets are 3-7 ATS in the last 10 meetings.
The UNDER is 5-1 in the last 6 meetings.

Key Injuries - G Tracy McGrady (knee) is OUT.

PROJECTED SCORE: 87 (UNDER - Total Play of the Day)

Hornets (-3.5, O/U 182): New Orleans hopes to have Peja Stojakovic back on Monday after he has missed the last six games due to a back injury. The Hornets have struggled with their 3-point shooting without Stojakovic, going 0-for-11 in a 97-79 loss at Chicago on Saturday, which marked the first time in more than three years they failed to make a shot from beyond the arc. Chris Paul has led New Orleans in Stojakovic's absence, averaging 26.8 points on 58.7 percent shooting. The Hornets are 4-2 in those games.

Hornets are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games overall.
The UNDER is 10-3 in New Orleans' last 13 games vs. Southwest Division.

Key Injuries - F Peja Stojakovic (back) is day-to-day.

              PROJECTED SCORE: 91

New Jersey Nets at Denver Nuggets [9 PM ET]

Nets: New Jersey has been great this season when playing without rest, going 12-6 ATS in this situation. Vince Carter scored a season-high 41 points in a tough 107-105 road loss to the Clippers on Sunday night, but the team lost point guard Devin Harris to a shoulder injury early in the third quarter. Steve Novak hit the game-winning 3-pointer for LA in the final seconds to send the Nets to their third loss in as many games during a five-game road trip. New Jersey is 0-3-1 ATS in its last four games overall after covering six in a row.

Nets are 10-4 ATS in the last 14 meetings.
The OVER is 12-2 in New Jersey's last 14 games overall.

Key Injuries - G Devin Harris (shoulder) is OUT.

              PROJECTED SCORE: 98

Nuggets (-9.5, O/U 208): Denver has won two straight following a three-game losing streak and will be out for revenge after suffering one of its worst losses of the season at New Jersey back on February 7th. The Nuggets lost that game 114-70, as Carmelo Anthony was the only player to score in double figures for the team with 15 points. Devin Harris scored a game-high 28 points for the Nets, but he is expected to miss this game due to a shoulder injury suffered in a 107-105 loss to the Clippers on Sunday night.

Nuggets are 13-3 ATS in their last 16 games vs. Atlantic Division.
The UNDER is 3-1 in the last 4 meetings.

Key Injuries - F Kenyon Martin (back) is day-to-day.

PROJECTED SCORE: 110 (Side Play of the Day)

Pick ‘n’ Roll: NBA best bets
                -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Antonio Spurs at Oklahoma City Thunder (+5.5, 189)

San Antonio remains one of the league's top defensive teams, allowing 93.4 points per game. In their last 17 games, the Spurs have given up more than 100 points four times.

They'll be facing an Oklahoma City club that hasn't reached 100 in its last eight contests, averaging 94.4 points during that stretch.

The Thunder, however, have leading scorer Kevin Durant back in the lineup after the second-year forward missed seven games from Feb. 28-March 11 with a sprained right ankle. Durant made his return Saturday, going 9-of-20 from the field and scoring 22 points in a 106-95 loss at Phoenix.

"I felt good," said Durant, scoring 25.9 points per game. "I was a little winded at first, but when I got my second wind, I was all right."

Durant had 28 points and 13 rebounds in the Dec. 14 loss in San Antonio.

Oklahoma City (18-48) has dropped two in a row overall, but returns to the Ford Center where it's won a season-best three straight. The Thunder, though, will likely have to do a better job taking care of the ball against the Spurs.

"We turned it over just too many times ... That's not going to get it done on the road,'' interim coach Scott Brooks said after his team had 22 turnovers versus the Suns.

The Thunder are committing an NBA-worst 16.7 turnovers per game.

Jeff Green recorded his 12th double-double of 2008-09 with 17 points and 10 boards against Phoenix. He scored a season-high 33 points in the Thunder's first game versus San Antonio this season.

                Pick: Under 189

Houston Rockets at New Orleans Hornets (-3.5, 182)

As good as the Houston Rockets and New Orleans Hornets have been on defense, they're going to have to tighten up even more if their offensive woes continue.

In a key matchup for playoff positioning in the Western Conference, the Rockets and Hornets look to bounce back from poor scoring efforts Monday night.

Strong defensive play has allowed Houston (43-25) and New Orleans (41-24) to overcome their scoring problems, and both teams are in the hunt to catch San Antonio for the Southwest Division title and No. 2 seed in the West. The Rockets trail the Spurs by 2 1/2 games and the Hornets are behind by three.

New Orleans is allowing 93.5 points per game and Houston 94.8. At some point, however, both clubs are going to need more scoring than they got Saturday night, as Houston lost 88-85 to San Antonio and New Orleans fell 97-79 to Chicago.

"These games are very important," said center Tyson Chandler, held to four points on 2-for-6 shooting as the Hornets were limited to 79 points for the second time in four games.

New Orleans was particularly bad from 3-point range, missing all 11 attempts. It was the first time the Hornets failed to make a shot from beyond the arc since March 1, 2006, against the Los Angeles Clippers.

The Rockets' problems versus the Spurs came down the stretch, as they went 0-for-3 on 3-pointers in the fourth quarter despite going 7-for-17 for the game. Ron Artest missed an open 3 that would have tied the game with 9.9 seconds left.

                Pick: Under 182

Washington Capitals at Atlanta Thrashers (N/A)

                          How about the Atlanta Thrashers?

They’ve won five in a row and seven of their last 10 games. The Thrashers enter the game against Washington coming off a thrilling 4-3 shootout win in Buffalo. Todd White scored with four seconds left in the third period to tie the game and force overtime.

Thrasher’s coach John Anderson called Brett Sterling’s name in the fourth round of the shootout. Sterling had been called up earlier in the day to replace the injured Ilya Kovalchuk. The move paid off as Sterling won the game by beating Patrick Lalime in the one on one showdown.

Kovalchuk is still listed as doubtful for Monday night.

The Thrashers have gone over the total in seven of their last 10 games while the Capitals are 6-3-1 over/under in their past 10 contests.

After struggling in early March, the Capitals have won three in a row over Nashville, Philly and Carolina. Alexander Ovechkin is one goal away from hitting the 50-goal mark for the third time in his four year career.

The Capitals and Thrashers have finished over in all three meetings this season and combined for 26 goals in the process. The Capitals have won two of three and may be the popular pick once again but with Atlanta playing their best hockey of the season the smarter play is on the total.

                          Pick: Over

Nashville Predators at Los Angeles Kings (-105, 5.5)

Nashville rookie goalie Pekka Rinne made a triumphant return to the Predators line with a 2-0 shutout of the Coyotes Saturday night. Rinne wasn’t tested often in the first forty minutes of action.

"Obviously it's hard when you only face eight shots in the first two periods," Rinne told the media. "But it's all mental. You just try to be sharp. They didn't have anything the first two periods and the guys showed how important a game it is. It's a do or die game for us."

Rinne has now won seven of his last eight games and is the only reason Nashville is in the Western Conference playoff hunt.

After scoring 28 goals during a six game winning streak, the Predators offense has dried up finding the back of the net just six times in their last four games.

The Kings have played just four of their last 13 games on home ice. However, they do take a three-game winning streak on home ice into this Monday night’s tilt with Nashville.

Los Angeles is coming off a 2-1 shootout loss to the San Jose Sharks.

"We played very well," Kings coach Terry Murray said. "Coming into San Jose at 3 a.m. in the morning from Vancouver and coming out with that kind of performance, it was as good as they can play."

In head-to-head action this season, the Predators are 2-0 with 5-4 and 3-1 wins in the first half of the season.

                          Pick: Nashville -105
