    Daily Sports Roundup

    Saturday, March 14

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: A dozen college basketball conference tournaments come to an end, and the Rockets and Spurs meet on the hardwood.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The top matchup in the NBA on Saturday will take place in Houston, with the Spurs coming to town to face the Rockets. San Antonio lost 102-95 at home to the Lakers on Thursday night, and they were blasted 103-84 by Houston when the teams last met on November 29. Luther Head had a team-high 21 points for the Rockets in that win, while Yao Ming was held to just 12 points. Tim Duncan scored 17 points for the Spurs in a losing cause, and Tony Parker had 15 points.

The other marquee matchup on Saturday is Utah at Miami. The Heat got past the Jazz 93-89 as a 4-point road underdog when those two teams met back on December 3. Rounding out the slate: Charlotte at Minnesota, New Orleans at Chicago, the Clippers at Denver, and Oklahoma City at Phoenix. The Suns came out on the wrong end of a 119-111 score against the Cavaliers Thursday night.

    The march toward Madness . . .

Semi-final and championship matchups make up college hoops' Saturday schedule this week as bubble teams try to state their case for a Big Dance invite.

A dozen conferences will conclude their tournaments on Saturday including the Big 12, which will offer up Baylor vs. Missouri. The Big East title game is Louisville vs. Syracuse, Conference USA features Memphis vs. Tulsa, the Mountain West gives us San Diego State vs. Utah/Wyoming, and in the Pacific-10 it'll be UCLA/USC vs. Arizona State. Mid-major championship games include Temple vs. Duquesne in the Atlantic-10, Akron vs. Buffalo in the Mid-American, and Utah State vs. Nevada/Louisiana Tech in the Western Athletic Conference.

Meanwhile, the ACC, Big Ten, and SEC will stage their semi-finals on Saturday. In the ACC the matchups are North Carolina vs. Florida State, and Maryland vs. Duke, while the Big Ten offers up Michigan State vs. Ohio State, and Purdue vs. Illinois. In the SEC it'll be LSU vs. Mississippi State, and Auburn vs. Tennessee.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

The NHL kicks off its Saturday schedule with a pair of Eastern Conference matinee matchups: the Islanders at Boston, and the Rangers at Philadelphia. The Bruins are coming off a 5-3 win over the Senators on Thursday night, with Phil Kessel scoring twice in that victory, while the Isles bounced the Habs 3-2 in OT on Thursday. The Rangers got a goal from Sean Avery in their win over the Predators last time out, and the Flyers are coming off a 2-1 loss to the Capitals.

Later on Saturday afternoon it'll be Detroit at St. Louis and Ottawa at Pittsburgh, with the evening schedule consisting of New Jersey at Montreal, Atlanta at Buffalo, Calgary at Toronto, Carolina at Washington, Tampa Bay at Florida, Minnesota at Dallas, Colorado at Edmonton, Nashville at Phoenix, and Los Angeles at San Jose. The Sharks were upset 3-1 by the Blues on Thursday night, with goalie Evgeni Nabokov missing the matchup with a lower-body injury.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

Second-round action in Pool 2 of the World Baseball Classic gets underway on Saturday, with Netherlands vs. Venezuela and United States vs. Puerto Rico at Miami's Dolphin Stadium. The Dutch shocked the baseball world by beating the Dominican Republic twice in the first round to advance to Miami, while Puerto Rico beat the Netherlands twice to win Pool D. Venezuela won Pool C by knocking off the United States by a score of 5-3 in Toronto on Wednesday night.

      Six-pack for Saturday

Anatomy of a Marathon: Some notes about the Syracuse-UConn six-overtime thriller from Thursday night.........

-- Jonny Flynn played 67 of a possible 70 minutes, had 34 points, 11 assists, six steals and was 16-16 at the foul line.

-- Arinze Onuaku was 2-5 on foul line, which sounds bad, until you realize he entered the game on a 1-19 skid at the charity stripe.

-- Paul Harris is a 6-4 forward who was just 8-23 from floor, but he had 29 points, 22 rebounds and played his butt off on defense.

-- UConn's starting guards were 14-47 from floor, 3-20 from arc.

-- Two non-starters played 45+ minutes, one for each team.

-- UConn is 0-4 in its last four Big East tournament games.

Saturday's List of 13: Chaos a player in Championship Week

        13) Everyone who had Baylor in the Big 12 final raise your hand-- yeah, and I'm guessing you had the Temple-Duquesne final in A-14 figured out too. Welcome to March, the most nonsensical month......

        12) Illinois PG/sparkplug Chester Frazier is out with an injured hand, after hurting it in Wednesday's practice; Illini still drilled Michigan by 10 (it wasn't that close), now faces Purdue in the Big 11 semis.

        11) They put over 100,000 fans in the Georgia Dome Friday for the two sessions of the ACC tournament; three of the four games were decided by three points or less, and fourth game was a 7-point dog winning outright. Much better than a year ago tonight, when the SEC tournament was delayed by a tornado passing through Atlanta.

        10) Auburn continues to roll, winning for 8th time in last nine games, putting Florida back on the bubble with a 61-58 win.

        9) Tulsa trailed UAB 11-4, then went on an 11-0 run and was never headed, as Hurricane held off UAB 70-67, advancing to finals where they will play Memphis for the C-USA Championship.

        8) Another bubble slot went away with news that Temple-Duquesne is the A-14 final; Xavier will get in, the winner of the final will get in, but someone who thought they'd get in NCAAs will go to the NIT.

        7) Villanova led Louisville by 8 at the half, then got outscored 43-21 in second half; in their two tournament games, Villanova was -37 in the second half, +24 in the first.

        6) The Drew family likes Oklahoma City; Bryce Drew hit a famous 3-pointer to gives his dad's Valparaiso team an upset win in NCAAs vs Ole Miss a few years back, now Scott Drew's Baylor Bears are in Big 12 finals across the street from where Valpo beat the Rebels.

        5) Akron is in MAC final after being down 12 with 4:50 left in their first-round game vs Toledo, Zips are coached by Keith Dambrot, a guy better known for being Lebron James' high school coach.

        4) Pacific made 11-20 from arc, survived some terrible ballhandling in last minute, and beat Long Beach 65-60, advancing to play in finals of the Big West tournament against top-seeded Northridge.

        3) San Diego State avenged two earlier losses to BYU with its 64-62 win that probably gets Aztecs into the NCAA tournament. Aztecs are really a strong defensive team, have lot of quickness.

        2) Top-seeded Utah State was down 47-34 at half, rallied to beat a gritty New Mexico State squad 71-70; State now plays host Nevada in the WAC finals 10pm Saturday.

        1) USC and Arizona State both beat teams they went 0-2 against in regular season, and will now meet for Pac-10 title Saturday in LA. .

Pick ‘n’ Roll: NBA best bets
              -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Clippers at Denver Nuggets (-13.5, 205.5)

The Denver Nuggets won convincingly their last time out, but eight losses in their last 12 games is hardly the type of play that's going to put them over the top in a tight Northwest Division race.

A visit from the reeling Los Angeles Clippers might be just the place to start a winning streak.

The Nuggets will try to make it six wins in a row over the Clippers on Saturday night at the Pepsi Center, while Los Angeles will be looking to snap a six-game slide that included an almost unfathomable loss in their latest contest.

Denver (41-25) is in a crowded three-team race for the Northwest title along with Utah and Portland, but the recent play of coach George Karl's team has hardly resembled a division champion.

The Nuggets had dropped three in a row and eight of 11 to fall out of first place for the first time since December heading into a home game against Oklahoma City on Wednesday.

Karl used eight players with Kenyon Martin sitting out due to a lower back strain, and seven scored in double figures in a 112-99 win. The one who didn't, backup guard Anthony Carter, had a season-high 12 assists in his return after missing four games with a sore left hip.

"It was good to have A.C. back," said Linas Kleiza, who had 20 points off the bench. "He creates a lot of easy opportunities."

Oklahoma City was the first of five straight teams the Nuggets will face that own a losing record, and with six consecutive defeats the Clippers (15-49) are playing the worst of any of them.

Karl, though, isn't sure playing struggling clubs is any sort of a breather.

"It's not going to be easy," he said. "A lot of these teams are really playing with no stress and no pressure, and we're playing with probably the most stress and most pressure we've had all year long."

              Pick: Los Angeles +13.5

Charlotte Bobcats at Minnesota Timberwolves (+4.5, 193)

Since winning a franchise-best six in a row, the Charlotte Bobcats have dropped back-to-back contests against Western Conference powers.

A game against one of the league's worst teams should help them get back on track.

On Saturday night, the Bobcats look for their fifth consecutive victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves, who are trying to avoid losing for the 12th time in 13 games.

After averaging 103.0 points on 51.3 percent shooting during its winning streak, Charlotte's offense has sputtered recently.

The Bobcats (28-37) shot 42.5 percent from the floor in Friday's 91-86 loss to Houston after making 44.1 percent of their shots in a 100-86 loss at San Antonio on Tuesday.

Still, Charlotte had a chance to beat the Rockets. Raja Bell's jumper gave the Bobcats a one-point lead with 34 seconds left, but Houston went on to score the game's final six points.

The loss is especially tough for a Bobcats team seeking the first playoff berth in their five-year franchise history. Charlotte is tied for 10th in the East, but just one-half game out of eighth.

"I think we played the way we were playing when we went on that six-game streak," said guard Raymond Felton, who had 12 points on 6-for-19 shooting. "The ball just wouldn't fall in the basket for us."

While Charlotte's offense is mired in a bit of a funk, it should be able to get back on track against Minnesota (19-46), which owns the league's seventh-worst scoring defense (103.4).

The Bobcats are averaging 107.5 points on 50.3 percent shooting during their four-game winning streak over the Timberwolves. Charlotte, which has not lost to Minnesota since a 102-96 setback on Jan. 1, 2007, won 100-90 on Dec. 1 in the first meeting of the season.

              Pick: Over 196

                    Ice Picks: NHL best bets
                    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Rangers at Philadelphia Flyers (-146, 5.5)

John Tortorella is known for being tough on his teams. The New York Rangers just got a serious dose of that.

Two days after Tortorella gave a stinging speech to spark his club to a comeback victory, the Rangers open a difficult home-and-home series against the Atlantic Division rival Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday.

The Rangers (35-25-8) hired Tortorella to replace the fired Tom Renney on Feb. 23, clearly looking for someone to motivate a listless team that was falling in the standings. Tortorella coached Tampa Bay to the 2004 Stanley Cup title, solidifying his reputation as an effective motivator in the locker room.

After watching New York fall behind with a poor first period Thursday, Tortorella ripped his team during the intermission and the Rangers went on to beat Nashville 4-2. The fiery coach also benched Nikolai Zherdev, the team's co-leader with Scott Gomez at 51 points, after a turnover led to the Predators' second goal in the opening period.

"He wasn't happy after the first period," said Gomez, who had a goal and two assists. "It has been a while since I've heard a speech like that. We were playing too timid. Nashville had the 2-1 lead and we thought it was over.

"He let us know what it is going to be like from now on. He lit into all of us. We were feeling sorry for ourselves and he spotted that right away. He called us out. I thought we responded well."

The Rangers are 4-2-1 under Tortorella after going 2-7-3 in the previous 12, including a 5-2 home loss to Philadelphia on Feb. 15. They're seventh in the Eastern Conference, one point behind sixth-place Pittsburgh and two back of fifth-place Montreal, which trails Philadelphia by two points for fourth.

                    Pick: New York +136

Detroit Red Wings at St. Louis Blues (+134, 5.5)

Although they have taken the lead in the Western Conference, the Detroit Red Wings still haven't solved their inconsistent play on defense. Some of their best performances, though, have come in St. Louis.

The visiting Red Wings will look to add another strong showing Saturday as they attempt to stay unbeaten against the Blues this season.

Detroit (44-15-9) blew a two-goal lead in the third period Thursday night against visiting Calgary, allowing the Flames to score three times in the final 3:22. The Red Wings couldn't capitalize on Daniel Cleary's goal with 42 seconds left and suffered a 6-5 shootout loss.

After outshooting the Flames 28-4 in the first period, they were outshot 17-2 in the final 20 minutes of regulation, but moved a point ahead of San Jose in the West after the Sharks fell 3-1 in St. Louis later in the evening.

"I thought we got too passive (in the third period). We were backing in too much and giving them the red line to dump it in," said Detroit captain Nicklas Lidstrom, who had a goal and two assists. "We got away from playing our system late in the game."

In allowing five goals on 33 shots, Ty Conklin tied his worst performance of the season and added to Detroit's defensive struggles. The Red Wings have give up 25 goals in the past six games, allowing Nashville to score eight times Feb. 28 and Columbus to match that total last Saturday.

Fortunately for Detroit, its goalies have bounced back from their woeful performances.

Following an 8-2 home loss to the Blue Jackets in which Chris Osgood gave up seven goals, Conklin led the Red Wings to a 3-2 overtime win Tuesday night over visiting Phoenix.

Conklin allowed four goals in the first 9:51 and Osgood gave up another four on 14 shots in the 8-0 loss in Nashville, but Osgood recovered with his first shutout of the season in the next game - a 5-0 win in St. Louis.

In its four straight wins at the Scottrade Center, Detroit has allowed four goals, and former Blue Osgood has two shutouts among his three consecutive victories there. Conklin is 3-0-0 with a 2.10 goals-against average in four lifetime meetings against St. Louis (31-28-8).

                    Pick: Detroit -144
