    Daily Sports Roundup

    Friday, March 13

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The limping Celtics get a visit from the Grizzlies, while the big guns of the ACC begin their quest for a conference crown.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The Celtics will play host to the Grizzlies in one of 11 games on the NBA's schedule for Friday night. Boston guard Rajon Rondo (ankle) and forward Glen Davis (ankle) have already been ruled out for that matchup, as the team looks to shake off their 107-99 loss to Miami on Wednesday night. The Grizzlies are coming off a loss as well - they were pounded 104-79 by Minnesota Wednesday.

LeBron James and the Cavaliers will be looking to pick up an easy win in Sacramento on Friday night, while Dwight Howard and the Magic will be in Washington to take on the lowly Wizards. Rounding out the schedule: Houston at Charlotte, Detroit at Toronto, Chicago at Philadelphia, Indiana at Atlanta, New York at Minnesota, Dallas at Golden State, New Jersey at Portland, and New Orleans at Milwaukee. The Hornets beat Washington 109-98 Wednesday night.

    The march toward Madness . . .

Some of the country's top teams will finally hit the hardwood in college hoops' conference tournaments on Friday night, including the big guns in the ACC. No. 1 North Carolina, No. 8 Wake Forest, No. 9 Duke, and No. 22 Florida State will also see their first postseason action at Atlanta's Georgia Dome, with matchups finalized late on Thursday evening and games tipping off all throughout Friday.

No. 7 Michigan State will also get back on the floor on Friday afternoon as they begin their Big Ten tournament, as will No. 24 Purdue. As well, LSU, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Auburn begin their trek through the SEC tournament at Tampa's St. Pete Times Forum. Meanwhile, the Big 12, Big East, Conference USA, Mountain West, Pacific-10, and Atlantic-10 conferences will all stage their semi-finals on Friday, with each of those tournaments finishing off on Saturday.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

The National Hockey League offers up just a pair of contests on a Friday night dominated by pro and college hoops. The first game features a couple of Central Division rivals, as the Blue Jackets travel to Chicago to take on the Blackhawks. Those teams have met just twice so far this season, with Chicago coming out on top both times - a 3-1 home win in December, and a 4-3 road win in November.

The late game is then a west-coast matchup between the Kings and Canucks in Vancouver. Those two clubs just met on the ice on Monday night, with Los Angeles pulling out a 3-2 victory at home. Jarret Stoll scored twice for the Kings in that game, while Jon Quick stopped 20 of 22 Vancouver shots. Alex Burrows and Taylor Pyatt provided markers for Vancouver in the losing cause on Monday.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

The World Baseball Classic doesn't begin its second-round games until Saturday afternoon, which means Friday's diamond action is limited to the Grapefruit and Cactus leagues. The Yankees will take on the rival Red Sox in the top matchup on that slate, with New York still reeling from the news that third baseman Alex Rodriguez will be out until May after undergoing hip surgery. The Vegas oddsmakers still have New York at 11/4 to win the World Series this year, although that could drop if they struggle early. The BoSox are sitting at 15/2 odds.

      Six-pack for Friday

Our six favorite college basketball analysts, in alphabetical order...

-- Jimmy Dykes-- Wasn't that long ago he was doing the midnight games on Big Monday; now he's doing the ACC tourney.

-- Fran Fraschilla-- Former Manhattan coach is the best analyst on college basketball today, hands down.

-- Pete Gillen-- Former Xavier coach is like the late Al McGuire, except he knows the players' names.

-- Doug Gottlieb-- Opinionated, knowledgeable; we need people on TV who say what they think, even if we disagree with them.

-- Marques Johnson-- Invoked Nancy Kerrigan's name during last night's Pac-10 tourney broadcast. A funny man.

-- Bill Raftery-- We all should have such enthusiasm for our job.

Friday's List of 13: Wrapping up a great day of college hoop....

Way too much happened Thursday to jam into a list of 13, but we'll do our best..............it all started at noon, and ended at 1:41 am, when Wyoming put a dagger through New Mexico's postseason hopes out in Las Vegas.........the 6-OT Syracuse-UConn game will go down as one of the greatest, if not the greatest game ever played.

        13) If you call the Syracuse-UConn marathon the most exciting game in the history of college basketball, I won't argue with you.

        12) Syracuse had four players foul out, which means two kids got in the game for the first time, one in the fourth OT, one in the fifth OT.Syracuse had a walk-on in the game in the last two overtimes; he got a rebound in the sixth overtime; it was his first rebound all year.

        11) All the overtime drama was caused by a replay reversal, a really close call, that negated a winning Syracuse shot at end of regulation. After watching the replay ten times, I couldn't tell if the shot should have counted or not, it was that close.

        10) For the record, Cincinnati beat Bradley in seven OTs back in '81, and that is the longest game in Division I basketball history.

        9) Five years in a row now, the #6 seed has beaten the #3 seed in the first round of the Mountain West tournament.

        8) Three of the top four seeds in the Big 12 lost Thursday; Missouri was the only higher-seeded team that won.

        7) DeJuan Blair got in foul trouble, Pitt went 0-8 from arc, and West Virginia beat its rival for first time in three tries this season, 74-60.

        6) Clemson is stumbling down stretch again this season, losing for the fourth time in last five games, getting upset by Georgia Tech, 86-81.

        5) Alabama is getting hot at right time, winning for fifth time in their last six games, beating Vanderbilt fairly easily, 82-75.

        4) San Diego State beat UNLV for third time this season, second at Thomas & Mack Center, and they beat the Rebels fairly easily. I'm remiss if I don't mention that UNLV's Wink Adams was 6-12 from the floor in the first half; all the other Rebels were 2-9. Lets just say Wink isn't real fond of passing the ball.

        3) Bubble teams are rooting like hell against Baylor/Oklahoma State in the Big 12, Wyoming in the MWC, Georgia Tech in the ACC, Penn State in the Big 11, and they're rooting hard to Xavier and Memphis in their respective leagues. At-large spots are drying up quickly.

        2) The #'s 2-3-4 teams in America all lost Thursday. #1 didn't play.

        1) At the end of the day, its hard to believe that UConn hasn't won a Big East conference tournament game in the last four seasons.

Pick ‘n’ Roll: NBA best bets
            -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New Orleans Hornets at Milwaukee Bucks (+3.5, 198)

Milwaukee needs to make up for Tuesday’s loss to the lowly New York Knicks.

The Bucks have lost seven of their last 10 overall and a home victory over the Hornets could help get the club back on track.

In their last meetings with the Hornets, a one-point loss in the Big Easy last month, the Bucks mounted a huge fourth-quarter comeback but came up just short.

Tyson Chandler tipped in a missed shot in with 3.3 seconds left to give the Hornets a one-point victory after the club blew a double-digit lead with four minutes left.

“It was an unbelievable comeback for us,” Bucks point guard Luke Ridnour told reporters. “In the NBA, you just never know. To fight back like that and then Chandler made a heck of a play at the end of the game, it hurts.”

Look for Milwaukee to exact some revenge and cover the number.

            Pick: Bucks

Houston Rockets at Charlotte Bobcats (Pick, 183)

Despite suffering a 14-point setback to the San Antonio Spurs Tuesday, the Bobcats should be more than ready to give the Rockets a run for their money.

The Bobcats suffered a 21-point road loss to the Rockets on Feb. 22 and then started their longest winning streak in franchise history two nights later.

“We’re just getting better right now and more consistent,” Bobcats forward Boris Diaw told reporters after beating the New York Knicks Saturday.

The streak is over but the Bobcats are a much better club today than when they last matched up against the Rockets on Feb. 22.

Charlotte is just a game behind the eighth-place Chicago Bulls in its bid to make the playoffs for the first time since joining the NBA in the 2004-05 campaign.

The Rockets are coming off a difficult loss to swallow. They led the Lakers by double digits at halftime Wednesday night but allowed Kobe Bryant to take over the contest in the second half. The Black Mamba had 18 points in the fourth quarter guiding the Lakers to a 102-96 win.

            Pick: Bobcats

Big Ten Quarters: Penn State vs. #24 Purdue [ESPN | 9 PM ET]

Penn State: The Nittany Lions are still hoping to make the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2001 and took a big step forward to that goal with a 66-51 rout of Indiana on Thursday. They hope that Talor Battle can step up following a sub-par performance against the Hoosiers, as the Big Ten's leading scorer totaled only three points on 1-of-3 shooting. “Talor’s banged,” Penn State head coach Ed DeChellis said. “He’s had a foot that’s been banged up about a week, 10 days now. We tried in practice to give him as many reps off as we possibly could. We gotta have energy (Friday).”

Penn State is 7-3 ATS in its last 10 Friday games.
The UNDER is 7-3 in Penn State's last 10 Friday games.

Key Injuries - G Talor Battle (foot) is probable.

                      PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Purdue (-7, O/U 122): The Boilermakers struggled down the stretch of the regular season, dropping three of their last four games. They did get Preseason Big Ten Player of the Year Robbie Hummel back, but he averaged just 10.4 points in his last seven games. Hummel had suffered a hairline fracture of his back around midseason, and Purdue went just 2-3 without him. “Our goal was to win the Big Ten and we didn’t,” Boilermakers head coach Matt Painter said. “Hopefully we can use that as motivation in Indianapolis.”

Columbus Blue Jackets at Chicago Blackhawks (N/A)

The Hawks are coming off a 3-2 shootout win over the Carolina Hurricanes. Rookie Kris Versteeg continued his stellar season by scoring the shootout winner.

"That was pretty energetic," said Versteeg, who also scored his 18th of the season late in the second period to tie the score 1-1. "We really tried to chip pucks and keep pucks in deep to play to our advantages. Keeping things simple and playing hard every game is what we really want to do."

Chicago has activated Nikolai Khabibulin from the injury reserve. The addition of Khabibulin means Cristobal Huet will get some rest. Huet had started 10 of the teams past 13 games. Antti Niemi has been reassigned to the American Hockey League.

Prior to Thursday night against the Penguins, Columbus had won three of four including victories over the Red Wings and Bruins.

The Blue Jackets will be on the second half of back-to-back games after a stop in Pittsburgh on Thursday. You have to like the Hawks at home with Columbus possibly a little tired.

                          Pick: Chicago

Los Angeles Kings at Vancouver Canucks (-220, 5.5)

The Canucks will welcome a return home after dropping both games during a quick trip down to Southern California. The trip started with a 3-2 loss to the Kings and wrapped up with a Scott Niedermayer overtime goal in a 4-3 defeat at the hands of the Ducks.

Prior to the problems in sunny California, the Canucks had won six of seven and were playing their best hockey of the season.

The Kings have scored 12 goals in their last three games which all turned out to be wins on home ice. Los Angeles now head back out on the road where they have lost four in a row.

"At this point of the season, it doesn't matter how we win games - as long as we're winning them," Kings Captain Dustin Brown said. "We've got to keep this momentum going and scrape and claw for everything we get. We're on the outside looking in. And with the way the schedule is, teams are flip-flopping left and right, night after night.”

The Kings might be in tough to snap their road woes. Vancouver has won seven straight home games and has allowed only five goals in its last four games at GM Place. Since returning from injury Roberto Luongo has started 20 of 21 games. Overall the Canucks have won 12 of their past 16.

                          Pick: Vancouver
