    Daily Sports Roundup

    Wednesday, March 11

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: College hoops conference tournaments continue, the Celtics meet the Heat, and the Blackhawks take on the Hurricanes.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

It's Boston at Miami in the marquee Eastern Conference clash in the NBA on Wednesday night. The Celtics fell 86-79 to the Magic on Sunday, and they'll be missing forwards Kevin Garnett and Glen Davis and guard Rajon Rondo against the Heat. Miami turned up the offense in a 130-127 win over the Bulls on Monday night, with Dwyane Wade having a huge performance: 48 points and 12 assists.

The top Western matchups for Wednesday are the Lakers at Houston and Dallas at Portland, while Denver will play host to Oklahoma City. As well, it'll be Utah at Atlanta, Toronto at Philadelphia, Chicago at Orlando, New Orleans at Washington, New York at Detroit, Memphis at Minnesota, and New Jersey at Golden State. The Warriors will enter Wednesday on a three-game losing streak.

    The march toward Madness . . .

Four more big college hoops conference tourneys get underway on Wednesday, with the Big 12, Conference USA, Mountain West, and Pacific-10 all seeing action. The opening-round Big 12 matchups are Baylor vs. Nebraska, Colorado vs. Texas, Iowa State vs. Oklahoma State, and Texas Tech vs. Texas A&M, with all games at Oklahoma City's Ford Center. The Mountain West's Wednesday matchup has Air Force vs. Colorado State at Las Vegas' Thomas & Mack Center.

In CUSA it's Rice vs. Marshall, Southern Miss vs. UCF, East Carolina vs. Tulane, and SMU vs. Houston at Memphis' FedExForum on Wednesday, while the Pac-10 offers up Stanford vs. Oregon State and Oregon vs. Washington State at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. As well, the second round of the Big East tournament gets underway Wednesday, with Providence, Marquette, West Virginia, and Syracuse taking on first-round winners at Madison Square Garden.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

There are just three games on the National Hockey League's schedule for Wednesday night, including the Hurricanes taking on the Blackhawks in Chicago. The Hawks were bounced 5-1 by Colorado on Sunday, with forward Martin Havlat suffering a lower-body injury. The Hurricanes blanked the Rangers 3-0 on Monday. Cam Ward stopped 28 shots to earn himself the shutout in that contest.

Ottawa hosts Tampa Bay on Wednesday night in a battle of lowly Eastern clubs, while Vancouver travels south to Anaheim to meet the Ducks. The Canucks fell 3-2 to Los Angeles on Monday night, getting goals from Alex Burrows and Taylor Pyatt. The Ducks are coming off a 3-2 loss to the Wild on Sunday, as Jonas Hiller gave up three goals on 28 shots. Anaheim is 3-6-1 in their past 10 outings.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

Jeff Gordon hasn't won a Sprint Cup race so far this season, but a series of solid performances has him sitting atop the standings after four events. NASCAR's top series is off this week, giving bettors a chance to take a long look at Gordon's 12/1 odds to win the Sprint Cup championship in 2009. Jimmie Johnson remains the favorite at 3/1 odds, but he's just 13th in the standings so far this season. Kyle Busch (4/1) and Carl Edwards (5/1) remain the top challengers on that list.

      Six-pack for Wednesday

We're looking at some of the top prospects from all thirty major league teams.........today, we look at the world champion Phillies.

-- Dominic Brown, OF-- Would have played football at Miami if he had gotten high enough test scores in high school......

-- Carlos Carrasco, P-- 13-11 in 32 AA starts the last two seasons.

-- Lou Marson, C-- Was a Phillies' bullpen catcher in World Series.

-- Jason Donald, SS-- More likely to play third base in big leagues.

-- Kyle Drabek, P-- Already had arm surgery, but since his dad was such a good pitcher, could get rushed through if he progresses.

-- Michael Taylor, OF-- Diabetic has .308 BA in 198 career games.

Wednesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.........

        13) DePaul went 0-18 in Big East play, but will play on Day 2 of the Big East tournament after upsetting Cincinnati Tuesday; Georgetown goes home early as St John's beats the Hoyas for the second time in a week. Welcome to March Madness, my friends.........

        12) I'm probably in the minority on this, but college basketball isn't quite the same without Billy Packer calling games.

        11) Speaking of announcers, great to hear Jim Kaat during Holland's amazing upset of the Dominican Republic in World Baseball Classic. Kaat retired from announcing to care for his ill wife, but she since has died-- would be terrific to hear him doing big league games this year.

        10) From the sound of things, next time the NBA and Players' Union do a labor contract, things are going to be scaled back pretty heavily which could influence kids to stay in college longer and make college ball a more attractive game. Then again, the economy could get a lot better before then, but it looks like that could take a while.

        9) Not only are Ivy League teams 0-10 in NCAA tournament games the last decade, they're 1-9 against the spread in those games.

        8) Last time a MAAC team got better than a 12-seed in NCAAs was when Manhattan got an 11-seed in '96; Siena has an RPI in mid-20's, so it is conceivable Saints will get a 12 or even an 11-seed.

        7) Was surprised to see that no MAC team has won an NCAA game since Chris Kaman's Central Michigan team beat Creighton as a #11 seed in the 2003 tournament. MAC's a one-bid league this season.

        6) Toledo almost pulled a pretty big upset, losing 93-92 to Akron in the MAC tournament; Rockets were 12-point dog, and led by 12 pts with 4:50 to play, so a bitter loss for them, great comeback by Zips.

        5) Huge upset in Big Sky, with Montana State upsetting top-seeded Weber State, setting up a Bobcat-Portland State final. Bobcats will go to play-in game with another upset win Wednesday night-- if Vikings win, they're probably a 14 or 15 seed.

        4) The coaching carousel started spinning slowly and quietly when Elon coach Ernie Nestor resigned Monday. Even at obscure places, it is important for coaches to win, and it ain't easy to build a winner.

        3) We have no idea who, but when Cleveland State upset Butler, one of the spots for a bubble team went away. Butler is going to get in, as far as all the Bracketology people say, and now Cleveland State is in too, so Florida-South Carolina-Minnesota-Arizona, someone is out.

        2) No matter what anyone on ESPN says, if you're St Mary's and just lost by 25 in WCC finals, the next five days will be really, really long. There are no guarantees, and that goes for all the bubble teams, but most of them can still make cases for themselves this week. Now Butler will be at least a little nervous, but most think they're in.

        1) I'm thinking in light of the economy, the committee will make the effort to keep teams a little closer to home, so fans can get to games a little easier than in previous years. Team like Siena is likely to head to Philly, Miami or Dayton, rather than out west.

Boston Celtics at Miami Heat [7:30 PM ET]

Celtics: Boston is battling injuries right now and just hopes to hang tough in the race to repeat as the top team in the Eastern Conference. The defending NBA champs have played eight games without star Kevin Garnett, going 5-3 straight-up but just 3-5 ATS. The lack of depth caused veterans Ray Allen and Paul Pierce to play more than 45 minutes in a 86-79 home loss to Orlando on Sunday. “Somebody else has to step up and the challenge for me is not doing what I did (Sunday) with Paul and Ray, that can’t happen,” Boston head coach Doc Rivers said. “Even in a time of crisis I want to keep their minutes down. We just have to find a way to win games.”

Celtics are 10-4 ATS in their last 14 road games.
The UNDER is 29-11 in Boston's last 40 road games.

Key Injuries - F Kevin Garnett (knee) is OUT.
PG Rajon Rondo (ankle) is OUT.
F Glen Davis (ankle) is OUT.

                PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Heat (NA): Miami star Dwyane Wade is making a serious case for MVP honors this season thanks to an outstanding run that has seen him total more than 40 points in four of his last six games. That includes a 48-point performance in a 130-127 double-overtime win over Chicago on Monday. “If he’s not legitimately considered for an MVP candidate, I don’t know what he needs to do,” Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra said. “We are currently a playoff contender and night after night, he’s making incredible plays like this.”

Heat are 7-20 ATS in their last 27 games vs. Atlantic Division.
The UNDER is 7-1-1 in the last 9 meetings.

Key Injuries - C Mark Blount (personal) is questionable.

                PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Pick ‘n’ Roll: NBA best bets
                  -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Lakers at Houston Rockets (N/A)

Despite losing Tracy McGrady to season-ending surgery, the Rockets have refused to send out a distress signal.

Houston is 8-2 straight up (SU) and 6-4 against the spread (ATS) in its last 10 and is two games back of the San Antonio Spurs in the Southwest standings.

The Lakers, meanwhile, have hit a small bump in the road. L.A. is 2-3 in its last five, including a 17-point loss at Portland.

Lamar Odom's recent play is contributing to the club's struggles. Odom has averaged just 3.7 points on 4-for-15 from the field in L.A.'s last three outings.

"We know he (Odom) can have little sessions of doubt or doldrums or whatever," Lakers coach Phil Jackson told reporters.

Don't expect Odom to shed his scoring slump against the Rockets. He will struggle to get open looks against Houston's frontcourt.

                  Pick: Rockets

New York Knicks at Detroit Pistons(-7.5, 207)

The Pistons are playing with urgency now that the fourth seed in the East is within their reach.

The Pistons have won five of their last six overall, including wins over the Orlando Magic and Boston Celtics.

"It's that time of year where you got to grind games out and you try to build momentum going into the playoffs," Pistons coach Michael Curry told reporters.

Detroit can't afford to take a step back Wednesday against the Knicks.

New York is 2-6 in its last eight and has lost five straight on the road. The club has surrendered more than 100 points in 17 of its last 18 and is ranked 29th in opponent field goal percentage (48 percent).

                  Pick: Pistons
