Ice Picks: NHL best bets
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Florida Panthers at Pittsburgh Penguins (-152, 5.5)
The Penguins left for their latest road trip ranked 10th in the Eastern Conference with 66 points and returned home tied for sixth place with 76 points. They’ve now won six games in a row - five of them on the road - after beating the Capitals 4-3 Sunday.
The newly-acquired Bill Guerin racked up one goal and three assists in the game against Washington while Sidney Crosby finished the day with one goal, one assist and the only shootout goal.
“We're coming after teams more and trying to initiate things; before we might have been guilty of trying to sit back sometimes," Crosby told reporters. "That's the mentality we try to have - puck possession and try to wear teams down. It's a grind for us to play like that, too ... but we've got some good results and guys are really buying into what we're trying to do."
The Florida Panthers were the Penguins’ fourth victim on their victory tour falling 4-1 last Thursday. Look for them to be out for revenge after allowing the Pens to score four unanswered goals, three of them in a seven-minute span in the second and third period.
Pick: Panthers +142
Calgary Flames at New Jersey Devils (-150, 5.5)
After winning their first game with Olli Jokinen in the lineup, the Calgary Flames then suffered two crushing losses - a 6-1 thumping by the Carolina Hurricanes Friday night and a 5-2 defeat against the Atlanta Thrashers Sunday.
Mikka Kiprusoff, who leads the NHL with 39 wins, had a dismal game in Atlanta, stopping only 15 of 20 shots. Head coach Mike Keenan wasn’t impressed.
“Kiprusoff has had better games, there’s no question,” Keenan said. ‘He would be the first to say it. We have to respond to those situations. I felt we spent too much time in the penalty box.”
Martin Brodeur was no better Saturday night when the New York Islanders managed to get six goals past him in a 7-3 victory. It was a major departure from what we are used to seeing from the future hall of famer, who earned two shutouts in three games after returning from a four-month hiatus.
Expect the two goalies to bounce back and be in top form for this contest.
Pick: Under 5.5
