    Daily Sports Roundup

    Tuesday, March 10

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Mavericks and Suns meet in Phoenix, the Wings look to get back on track, and the Big East tournament gets underway.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The top game on the NBA schedule for Tuesday night has Dallas in the desert to take on Phoenix. The Mavericks improved to 38-25 straight-up and 30-33 against-the-spread with a 119-103 win over the Wizards on Saturday night. The Suns and Mavs last met on the court on January 9, with Phoenix rolling to a 128-100 home win. Shaquille O'Neal led the way with 25 points in that easy victory.

Utah will travel to Indiana to face the Pacers on Tuesday, with New York at Milwaukee, Charlotte at San Antonio, Oklahoma City at Sacramento, and Cleveland at the Clippers. LeBron James and company knocked off the Heat 99-89 on Saturday night, with Mo Williams scoring a team-high 29 points in the victory. James picked up 14 points, 10 rebounds, and 12 assists in that matchup.

    The march toward Madness . . .

The first major conference starts their postseason tournament on Tuesday, as the Big East offers up four opening-round matchups. First up is DePaul vs. Cincinnati, which will tip off at 12pm ET. That game will be followed by St. John's vs. Georgetown (2pm ET), Rutgers vs. Notre Dame (7pm ET), and South Florida vs. Seton Hall (9pm ET). All games of the tourney are at Madison Square Garden.

The top team in action on Tuesday, though, is Butler, which will be taking on Cleveland State in the championship game of the Horizon Conference tournament. Other conference tourneys that will continue on Tuesday: Big Sky, Mid-American, Sun Belt, Western Athletic, Mid-Eastern, and the Summit League.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

The Red Wings will be looking to bounce back from an embarrassing weekend loss in one of 11 games on a busy National Hockey League schedule for Tuesday night. Detroit was trounced 8-2 by the Blue Jackets on Saturday night, with starting netminder Chris Osgood allowing seven goals on 30 shots before giving way to Ty Conklin. Henrik Zetterberg and Aaron Downey scored for Detroit.

The Blue Jackets will try to keep the goals coming on Tuesday when they play host to the Bruins. Also on the schedule: Calgary at New Jersey, Buffalo at Philadelphia, Edmonton at Montreal, Florida at Pittsburgh, the Islanders at Toronto, Washington at Nashville, Dallas at St. Louis, Atlanta at Colorado, and San Jose at Minnesota. The Sharks were topped 3-1 by Vancouver on Saturday.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

Along with the Big East (which will have its title game on Saturday) all the major college hoops conferences stage their tournaments this week. The Big 12, Conference USA, Mountain West, and Pacific-10 conference tourneys all start on Wednesday, with their championship games on Saturday. The ACC, Big Ten, and SEC conference tournaments start on Thursday and will wrap up on Sunday.

Tuesday's List of 13: Random thoughts on a late winter night

        13) Gonzaga whacked St Mary's, 83-58, finishing unbeaten in WCC, beating Gaels for third time. I think St Mary's deserves an at-large-- the game they scheduled against Eastern Washington becomes a must-win for Gaels-- they're doing it to sharpen up, but they better win

        12) Was surprised to learn today that UConn hasn't won conference tournament game since 2005. That should change this week.

        11) Larry Fotzgerald's grandfather earned a purple heart while serving in the military; Fitzgerald is over in the Middle East on tour of army bases in the desert, encouraging our troops.

        10) Former big-league great Bert Blyleven, who was born in Holland, is the pitching coach for Netherlands in the World Baseball Classic.

        9) Kansas won Big 12 tournament the last three years; I'm thinking they won't win it this year, but who will beat the Jayhawks?

        8) Over last ten years, Purdue has just two wins in Big 11 tourney; I'm surprised they haven't done better than that.

        7) Lot of media types areoptimistic about my Oakland A's this year, but their top four starting pitchers have total of 31 wins as a starting pitcher-- lot of if's have to become positives for A's to contend.

        6) Speaking of which, Eric Chavez is hurt again (yet); he got hurt as he swung a bat. Chavez hasn't played the field yet in a game-- at what point do you cut bait and just let the guy walk? He never plays.

        5) Few years ago, I was talking to guy who was an assistant coach in the MAAC-- he has since left that job. He was saying how teams in MAAC aren't happy about having conference tournament in Albany, since it gives Siena a big advantage. The event moved around, but the fact is, from a financial standpoint, Albany is the only place to hold this event. Nowhere else does it draw like it does here.

        4) Dwyane Wade had 48 points, hit a buzzer beater giving Miami an exciting 130-127 double OT win against the Bulls in South Florida.

        3) Spring training results are always misleading, but never more than this year, with so many key players in the WBC; you look at some of the lineups teams are using, and they're really playing the younger kids to give them experience, but it has to hurt the big league product at least a little, not to have a full spring training, right?

        2) NCAA likes to campaign against gambling, even though they know that gambling, to some extent, makes football/basketball more popular and therefore helps line their pockets, so wonder what they think of the West Coast tournament being in Vegas and A-14 event being held in Atlantic City?

        1) Thinking more about Buffalo signing Terrell Owens, it makes little more sense when you realize that their owner is 90 years old, so there is an urgency to win now that might not exist in other franchises. In the long run, Bills will suffer for signing Owens, but when you're 90, the long run might not be your first priority.

Pick ‘n’ Roll: NBA best bets
                -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dallas Mavericks at Phoenix Suns (N/A)

The Suns, who are 0-4 in their last four outings, aren’t going to beat anyone if they continue to play the same uninspiring defense they’ve been playing lately.

Phoenix, which is ranked 26th in the league in opponent scoring (105.8 PPG), has been even worse lately. The team is surrendering more than 110 points a night in the four games since interim coach Alvin Gentry took over on the bench.

Dallas, meanwhile, is ranked 10th in scoring (101.2 PPG) and is limiting its opponents to fewer than 100 points per night.

Dallas is 5-2 in its last seven overall, including a March 4 victory over the division-leading San Antonio Spurs.

“If we play hard every possession like we did, we can beat a really good team,” Mavericks owner Mark Cuban told reporters. “Now it’s up to the guys to keep on doing it.”

Dallas is 1-1 this season against the Suns.

Phoenix, meanwhile, is 2-7 against the spread (ATS) in its last nine against a club with a winning straight up (SU) record.

                Pick: Mavericks

New York Knicks at Milwaukee Bucks (-3.5, 222)

New York is one loss from being swept this season by the Bucks. But the good news is that for the first time this campaign the Knicks will face Milwaukee without its sharpshooter, Michael Redd. Redd is out for the rest of the season with a torn ACL.

Milwaukee is just 8-11 without Redd, who was the club’s leading scorer with more than 21 points a night. They are 2-5 ATS in their last seven home tilts against New York.

The Knicks, meanwhile, are 6-2 against the spread (ATS) in their last eight overall on the road. They are 14-6 ATS in their last 20 contests as a road underdog.

                Pick: Knicks
