    Daily Sports Roundup

    Sunday, March 8

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: Kyle Busch leads the Sprint Cup Series into Atlanta, the Celtics host the Magic, and North Carolina takes on ACC rival Duke.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

Eastern division leaders clash on Sunday afternoon when the Magic arrive in Boston to play the Celtics. Those teams last met on January 22, with Boston rolling to a 90-80 road win as a 4.5-point underdog. Paul Pierce led the Celtics' attack with 27 points in that contest, while Rajon Rondo picked up nine points and eight boards. Hedo Turkoglu poured in 22 points for Orlando in that defeat.

Utah will travel north of the border to take on the lowly Raptors on Sunday afternoon, while Phoenix has a big game in San Antonio. As well, it'll be New York at New Jersey, Memphis at Houston, Philadelphia at Oklahoma City, and Denver at Sacramento. The last-place Kings have two wins in their last 10 games.

    The march toward Madness . . .

There are three ranked matchups on Sunday as college basketball closes out its regular season, most notably No. 7 Duke at No. 2 North Carolina. The Tar Heels got the better of their rival back on February 11, rolling to a 101-87 win on the road. Ty Lawson poured in 25 points for UNC in that win, while Tyler HanXXXough had 17 points. Kyle Singler led the way for the Blue Devils with 22 points that day.

No. 10 Wake Forest will host No. 18 Clemson in another battle of ranked ACC teams on Sunday, while the Big Ten offers up No. 19 Purdue at No. 8 Michigan State. As well, Virginia Tech is at No. 24 Florida, while No. 14 Gonzaga will be at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas to begin their West Coast Conference tourney.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

It's another round of Crosby vs. Ovechkin on Sunday afternoon as Sid the Kid's Penguins travel to Washington to meet Alexander the Great's Capitals. Ovechkin sat out his team's Thursday night loss to Toronto with a bruised heel, but will be itching to return to action against his rival. Pittsburgh, meanwhile, got a goal from Crosby and two from Tyler Kennedy in their 4-1 victory over Florida on Thursday.

Boston will be at Madison Square Garden to take on the Rangers in a 12:30pm ET puck drop on Sunday. Other afternoon contests include Colorado at Chicago, Phoenix at the Islanders, and Calgary at Atlanta. Montreal will then travel to Dallas, while the Ducks will play host to the Wild to cap off the weekend schedule.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

The Sprint Cup Series will be at Atlanta Motor Speedway on Sunday afternoon for the Kobalt Tools 500. Kyle Busch won this event last season, and he's also coming off a victory in last weekend's Shelby 427 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. That's made it easy for the Vegas oddsmakers to list him as the 7/2 race favorite.

Jimmie Johnson is next on that list at 9/2 odds; Johnson won both races at Atlanta in the 2007 season. Matt Kenseth, who won the first two races of the season, sits at 6/1 odds for this weekend, with both Jeff Gordon and Carl Edwards at 8/1 odds. Greg Biffle starts the next tier at 10/1 to visit victory lane, Denny Hamlin is at 12/1, and Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Tony Stewart are at 15/1.

        Tips and Trends
        -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Phoenix Suns at San Antonio Spurs [ABC | 3:30 PM ET]

Suns: Phoenix has lost the first three games of a four-game road trip that ends in San Antonio on Sunday. The Suns have been able to push the pace despite the losses but have not finished those games strong enough to turn them into wins, including a 116-112 setback at Houston on Friday. “We got the pace of the game where we wanted it - up-tempo,” Phoenix head coach Alvin Gentry said. “Houston likes to play that way too. We seem to be snake bitten with the way things have gone at the end of games lately.”

Underdog is 8-2-1 ATS in the last 11 meetings.
The OVER is 9-3 in Phoenix's last 12 games overall.

Key Injuries - C Amare Stoudemire (eye) is OUT.

        PROJECTED SCORE: 106

Spurs (-6.5, O/U 219): San Antonio ended a skid of three losses in four games with an easy 100-78 win over Washington on Friday. Tony Parker scored 19 points in 24 minutes to lead the Spurs and has averaged 26.4 points in the last seven games. “At this time of year when you get a game like this, when every once in a while your starters can rest, it’s usually a good thing,” San Antonio head coach Gregg Popovich said. “So that worked out for us.”

Spurs are 8-2-1 ATS in their last 11 games vs. Pacific Division.
The OVER is 8-2 in San Antonio's last 10 games vs. Western Conference.

Key Injuries - G Manu Ginobili (ankle) is OUT.
F Drew Gooden (groin) is day-to-day.

        PROJECTED SCORE: 113

Pick ‘n’ Roll: NBA best bets
          -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Utah Jazz at Toronto Raptors (+5.5, 208)

Another victory would help the Utah Jazz match their longest win streak in 10 seasons. It would also move them to the top of the Northwest Division.

Fresh off a stirring comeback, the Jazz look for their 11th straight victory Sunday afternoon in Toronto as they start a five-game road trip.

Utah (39-23) would pull even with Denver for first in the Northwest if it can tie an 11-game run set from April 1-18, 1999. A Nuggets loss at Sacramento later that night would leave the Jazz alone at the top.

After steadily cutting into Denver's lead throughout the past month, Utah took a bigger slice with Friday night's 97-91 victory over the Nuggets. Trailing by 19 late in the second quarter, Utah scored 17 straight and took over for good with less than 13 minutes remaining.

"The first half and the second half, there was a great deal of difference in the way we played," coach Jerry Sloan said. "The second half, we came out and acted like we wanted to play. The first half, they just dominated - just kicked us all over the floor."

A healthier lineup is one reason why the Jazz are in position for a third straight division title.

A left ankle sprain caused point guard Deron Williams to miss 13 of the season's first 15 games, and while he was away, Carlos Boozer went out with a strained quadriceps tendon and had knee surgery. The All-Star power forward ended his 44-game absence Feb. 23.

Against Denver, Boozer couldn't follow up Wednesday night's 20-point, 17-rebound performance against Houston. He finished with nine points on 4-of-12 shooting Friday but had a team-leading 16 rebounds.

Boozer could be in line for a big game Sunday as he has averaged 23.5 points and 13.0 rebounds in his last four meetings with Toronto (23-40). He missed Utah's seventh straight win over the Raptors - a 114-87 blowout at home Dec. 5 - as Williams scored a team-best 21.

Eight of the Jazz's 10 straight victories have come at home, where they are 28-6 after going a league-best 37-4 in 2007-08. Utah is 11-17 on the road but has won three of its last four away from home.

While the Raptors have won three of their last five at home, they have lost four straight overall. In a 108-102 defeat Friday night at the Air Canada Centre, Toronto trailed by as much as 15 in the fourth quarter and got no closer than six with 1:04 remaining.

          Pick: Jazz

Denver Nuggets at Sacramento Kings (+7, 212)

The Denver Nuggets' lead in the Northwest Division has slipped to the slimmest of margins, and the struggling club's five-game road losing streak certainly hasn't helped.

A trip to Sacramento, however, isn't something most teams currently fear.

The Nuggets should have a good chance to avoid a seventh loss in their last 10 games overall Sunday night against the NBA-worst Kings, who are having major defensive problems with their revamped roster.

While Denver has beaten Portland and Los Angeles Lakers in the last nine days, the team's 3-6 stretch since Feb. 20 also includes losses to Milwaukee and Indiana. The Nuggets have dropped all five road games over that span, falling to 17-16 away from home this season.

The Kings (13-49) haven't played since Tuesday night, when they lost 117-109 at home to the Pacers, prompting coach Kenny Natt to call their defense "atrocious."

They were especially poor on the perimeter, as Indiana shot 52.4 percent (11-of-21) from 3-point range. Sacramento is the NBA's only club that is allowing opponents to shoot better than 40 percent from beyond the arc, and the team has given up an average of 113.4 points in the last 24 games.

"We take strides and then we take three steps back," center Spencer Hawes said. "We definitely have to figure something out, put a combination together and get some kind of consistency on the defensive end of the floor."

Denver hasn't had any trouble exploiting the Kings' woeful defense this season, twice scoring 118 points in lopsided victories. The Nuggets won 118-85 in Sacramento on Dec. 6, holding the Kings to 29.3 percent shooting.

          Pick: Over

#20 Purdue at #8 Michigan State [CBS | 12 PM ET]

Purdue: The Boilermakers may have been caught looking ahead to this meeting with Michigan State on Wednesday in a 64-61 loss to Northwestern following a 25-point rout of Ohio State last Saturday. “I think you would have to ask each individual player that,” Purdue head coach coach Matt Painter said after losing to the Wildcats. “They embarrassed us. We respect them. I thought we came out ready to play. They just outplayed us.”They have lost in their last eight trips to East Lansing.

Purdue is 5-0 ATS in the last 5 meetings.
The UNDER is 8-1 in the last 9 meetings.

                  Key Injuries - NONE

PROJECTED SCORE: 59 (UNDER - Total Play of the Day)

Michigan State (-5.5, O/U 128.5): The Spartans will be out for revenge after suffering their worst loss of the season at Purdue back on February 17th. They shot a season-low 32.7 percent from the field in the 72-54 loss, which turned out to be their only setback away from home in league play this season. “This was a big-time atmosphere, and you’ve got to bring it,” Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo said. “Does Purdue deserve credit? Probably. Are we to blame? Probably. I don’t feel good about a performance like this in a big-time game.”

Favorite is 10-3 ATS in the last 13 meetings.
The UNDER is 7-1 in Michigan State's last 8 games overall.

#7 Duke at #2 North Carolina [CBS | 4 PM ET]

Duke: The Blue Devils have played better since Elliot Williams was placed in the starting lineup following a 101-87 loss to North Carolina back on February 11th. Even though they also lost their very next game at Boston College, they bring a five-game winning streak into the rematch. “I think we just have more of a sense of urgency now,” Duke's Gerald Henderson said. “We only have three guaranteed games left. We’ve come together in those times where there’s real adversity or the game’s on the line.”

Underdog is 12-4 ATS in the last 16 meetings.
The OVER is 6-1 in the last 7 meetings.

Key Injuries - G Nolan Smith (concussion) is OUT.

PROJECTED SCORE: 80 (Side Play of the Day)

North Carolina (-8, O/U 164): This will be the last home game for Tyler HanXXXough, who is already the school's all-time leading scorer. HanXXXough still has a shot at becoming the ACC's all-time leading scorer, and his dream of winning a national championship in his final season is still alive. His numbers may be slightly down from a year ago, but he still hopes to go out with a bang. “I’m not worried about what people think,” he said. “People are going to write and say whatever they want. It doesn’t really affect me. I don’t regret anything.”

North Carolina is 2-6 ATS in its last 8 games overall.
The OVER is 9-2 in North Carolina's last 11 games overall.

Key Injuries - G Ty Lawson (toe) is questionable.

Purdue Boilermakers at Michigan State Spartans (-6, 128.5)

Michigan State wrapped up the Big Ten regular-season title earlier this week, but it would like to go into next week's conference tournament on a five-game winning streak.

It might be even more interested in some payback.

The eighth-ranked Spartans suffered their worst league loss in more than a year last month at Purdue, and they'll look for some revenge Sunday when the No. 19 Boilermakers visit the Breslin Center in a possible Big Ten tournament title game preview.

Michigan State (24-5, 14-3) has been the conference's best team all season and still has an outside shot at a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament. It hasn't always been a smooth ride, though, as the Spartans suffered stunning home losses to Northwestern and Penn State, two teams that had never previously won in East Lansing.

Michigan State's only true road loss came in West Lafayette on Feb. 17, when Purdue (22-8, 11-6) held the Spartans to a season-low 32.7 percent shooting in a 72-54 win.

Izzo may not have been impressed with his team's effort, but while Michigan State won its most recent game, Purdue wasn't as fortunate. The Boilermakers led visiting Northwestern by seven at halftime on Wednesday but lost 64-61.

That prompted some speculation that Purdue suffered a letdown with the Spartans having clinched the league one night earlier.

With a win Sunday, the Boilermakers will earn the No. 2 seed in the Big Ten tournament. A loss would move up Illinois and drop Purdue to No. 3, but a first-round bye awaits regardless.

                    Pick: Michigan State

Duke Blue Devils at North Carolina Tar Heels (-8, 164.5)

Tyler Hans-brough has battled injuries, faced swarming defenses and heard criticism from outsiders that his game hasn't been what it was last season when he was the national player of the year.

Yet the guy who passed on the NBA for one more year in college isn't worried about any of that as he prepares for his final home game at North Carolina. Fittingly, it comes against hated Duke with a chance for the second-ranked Tar Heels to win the Atlantic Coast Conference's regular-season title outright.

So much for the idea that Hans-brough isn't having the kind of season he came back to school for.

"I'm not worried about what people think," he said. "People are going to write and say whatever they want. It doesn't really affect me. ... I don't regret anything."

By the numbers, Hans-brough and the Tar Heels (26-3, 12-3) are on par with last year's Final Four team. For the second straight season, he leads the conference in scoring and his team heads into the season finale against the seventh-ranked Blue Devils (25-5, 11-4) knowing a win clinches the top seed in next week's league tournament.

But Hans-brough's job could be tougher considering point guard Ty Lawson didn't practice Saturday after injuring his left big toe during Friday's practice. Precautionary X-rays showed no fracture and the team is hopeful he will play, though it's unclear whether he will be at full speed.

The Blue Devils have taken a step forward since Krzyzewski inserted freshman guard Elliot Williams into the starting lineup and moved Jon Scheyer to the point shortly after a 101-87 loss to the Tar Heels in Cameron Indoor Stadium. Williams looks fresh after spending much of the season on the bench and has given Duke more energy defensively, which seems to indicate the Blue Devils' recent trend of late-season fades might be history.

"I think we just have more of a sense of urgency now," junior Gerald Henderson said. "We only have three guaranteed games left. We've come together in those times where there's real adversity or the game's on the line."

Still, Duke has its own injury questions, particularly up front against Hans-brough, Thompson, and freshmen big men Ed Davis and Tyler Zeller.

Junior forward Lance Thomas sprained his left ankle in Tuesday's win over Florida State, but practiced Saturday and is listed as probable even though it's unclear if he'll be limited. Duke will be without point guard Nolan Smith for a third straight game as he recovers from a concussion suffered at Maryland on Feb. 25.

In a twist, Hans-brough said his favorite game at North Carolina came his freshman year when the Tar Heels beat top-ranked Duke to ruin J.J. Redick's final home game. Now - with HanXXXough closing in on Redick's career scoring record - the Blue Devils can return the favor.

                    Pick: Under

                            -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Calgary Flames at Atlanta Thrashers (+165, 6)

Following a rare off night at both ends of the ice, the Calgary Flames hope a matchup against one of the league's worst teams will get them back on track.

However, it comes in a place where they haven't won in nearly three decades, back when they called that city home.

Calgary goes for a road win over the only NHL team against which it doesn't have one, visiting the city where its franchise originated in a matchup with the Atlanta Thrashers on Sunday.

The Flames (39-20-6) spent their first eight NHL seasons in Atlanta before moving to Calgary in 1980. The arrival of the expansion Thrashers in 1999 finally sent the Flames back to their original home for NHL games, but their return trips haven't been good ones.

Backup goalie Curtis McElhinney remained winless in 13 NHL appearances, and now it appears likely starter Miikka Kiprusoff will back in net.

Kiprusoff is 9-0-2 with a 2.35 goals-against average in his last 12 starts and has won six straight on the road with a 2.12 GAA. He leads all goaltenders in victories and now looks to reach 40 for the third time in four seasons after earning 39 in 2007-08.

Kiprusoff, who has started all but five of Calgary's games this season, has allowed a total of three goals in winning his only two career matchups with the Thrashers but has never played in Atlanta.

Despite Friday's performance, the Flames have scored 3.92 goals per game during a 9-2-2 stretch with Iginla contributing nine goals and nine assists in his last nine. He has six goals and five assists in the last five meetings with the Thrashers.

Olli Jokinen, acquired from Phoenix at Wednesday's trade deadline, could make a difference in breaking the Flames' jinx in Atlanta. Jokinen, who spent seven seasons in the Southeast Division with Florida, has 16 goals and 43 points in 49 career games against the Thrashers with six points in the past five.

The Flames will face an Atlanta defense that has given up 3.45 goals per game but comes off its second shutout of the season as Kari Lehtonen made 25 saves in a 2-0 victory over visiting Montreal on Friday night.

                            Pick: Over

Montreal Canadiens at Dallas Stars (-125, 5.5)

Playing away from home has appeared to revitalize the Dallas Stars' offense. The same cannot be said for the Montreal Canadiens as they try to solve their road woes.

After a successful trek west, the Stars return home looking to continue riding their resurgent offense on Sunday against the Canadiens, who seek their third road win in 15 games.

The Stars endured a season-high six-game homestand from Feb. 19-March 1 in miserable fashion, scoring 11 goals en route to a 1-5-0 record. In a three-game swing through California, though, Dallas found the back of the net 11 times while earning five of a possible six points.

Dallas (31-26-8) bounced back from a 5-4 overtime loss to Los Angeles on Thursday night with a 3-2 victory over Anaheim on Friday. Loui Eriksson scored his team-high 30th and 31st goals, and Marty Turco made 36 saves.

Playing on the road has had the opposite effect for the Canadiens, who've managed one goal in defeats at Buffalo and Atlanta. Despite facing one of the NHL's worst teams, Montreal (34-24-7) couldn't avoid its second shutout loss of the season, 2-0 to the Thrashers on Friday.

Coach Guy Carbonneau - a member of the Stars' Stanley Cup winning team a decade ago - said he was encouraged that his team "worked for 60 minutes and gained confidence" against Atlanta.

It's not immediately known who Carbonneau will start in goal. Jaroslav Halak has missed the last two games with the flu, and All-Star Carey Price is 2-10-1 with a 3.71 goals-against average in 15 games since returning from a lower-body injury that sidelined him for three weeks at the start of the new year.

Regardless of who starts, Montreal will be looking for its first win in Dallas since March 4, 1998. The Canadiens have scored five goals while posting four losses and a tie.

The Stars will likely counter with Turco, a 30-game winner for the sixth straight season. Turco has lost four straight home starts since beating Edmonton on Feb. 19, but has two wins, a tie and a 0.97 GAA in three career home starts against the Canadiens.
Mike Ribeiro, a Montreal native and second-round pick by the Canadiens in 1998, has two goals and three assists in a three-game points streak. He leads Dallas with 44 assists and 61 points.

                            Pick: Dallas
