    Daily Sports Roundup

    Saturday, March 7

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: UConn meets Pittsburgh in college hoops action, the Cavs face the Heat, and the USA begins their World Baseball Classic.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

LeBron James and the Cavaliers will take on a tough Eastern opponent for the second straight night on Saturday when Dwyane Wade and the Heat come to town. Those two teams met in Miami on Monday night, with the Cavaliers pulling out a 107-100 win as a 3.5-point road favorite. James poured in 42 points and added eight rebounds in that victory, while Wade had 41 points and nine assists.

Atlanta hosts Detroit in another battle of Eastern contenders on Saturday, while it's also Charlotte at New York, Oklahoma City at New Orleans, Philadelphia at Memphis, Washington at Dallas, Golden State at Milwaukee, and Indiana at the Clippers. As well, the Timberwolves will be on the road to face the Trail Blazers.

    The march toward Madness . . .

The last Saturday of college basketball's regular season gets off with a bang as No. 1 Connecticut travels to the Petersen Events Center to take on No. 3 Pittsburgh. The Panthers came away with a 76-68 win over the Huskies when these teams met at UConn back on February 16; Sam Young led Pittsburgh with 25 points in that contest, while A.J. Price had a team-high 18 points for UConn.

No. 4 Oklahoma hosts rival Oklahoma State, while No. 5 Memphis gets a visit from Tulane, No. 6 Louisville is at West Virginia, and Texas is at No. 9 Kansas. As well, No. 25 Syracuse will be at No. 13 Marquette in a battle of ranked teams, with No. 12 LSU at Auburn, No. 15 Missouri at Texas A&M, Washington State at No. 16 Washington, and No. 17 Xavier at Richmond. Lower-ranked teams in action include No. 20 UCLA hosting Oregon and No. 21 Arizona State getting a visit from Cal, while No. 22 Butler starts their Horizon Conference tournament.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

The Bruins will be trying to stay comfortable atop the Eastern Conference standings on Saturday afternoon when they get a visit from the Blackhawks in one of 10 games on the NHL's schedule. Boston lost their third straight game on Thursday, falling 2-1 to the Coyotes. The Blackhawks, meanwhile, are coming off a 3-2 win over the Ducks Tuesday, getting 28 saves from Cristobal Huet that day.

There are two other Saturday matinees this week, with New Jersey at the Islanders, and Minnesota at Los Angeles. Making up the evening slate: Edmonton at Toronto, Nashville at Philadelphia, Buffalo at Ottawa, Columbus at Detroit, St. Louis at Florida, Carolina at Tampa Bay, and San Jose at Vancouver. The Sharks are now tied with the Wings atop the West standings with 94 points.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

The United States begins their quest for a World Baseball Classic crown on Saturday afternoon when they take on Canada at Toronto's Rogers Centre; first pitch for that contest is set for 2:00pm ET. That group in Toronto also includes Italy and Venezuela, and those two teams will meet up at 8:00pm ET on Saturday. Pool C action continues through to next Wednesday, with the United States the big favorites at sportsbooks to finish ahead of those other three teams.

Saturday's List of 13: Wrapping up two days of hoops.......

        13) Cornell is first team in NCAA basketball tournament; they won the Ivy League Friday night for second year in row. Big Red isn't as good this year as last, when they lost 77-53 to Stanford in NCAA's.

        12) High drama in St Louis, where Booker Woodfox hit a jumper at the buzzer to give Creighton a 63-62 win over Wichita State, saving the Bluejays' butts, as far as the NCAA tournament goes. Jays led at half by 13, but trailed with 0:01.2 left, before Woodfox' heroics.

        11) Dismal end of things for Drexel Dragons, which lost its last three regular season conference games, all by a point, then trailed Towson 39-14 at the half in game they were favored to win by seven. A 73-62 loss sends Drexel to one of the consolation tournaments, maybe.

        10) The highest-rated SEC team in the kenpom.com power ratings is Tennessee, ranked 32nd. 25-5 LSU is only ranked 40th.

        9) Murray State had won seven games in row and 11 of last 12, but shot 0-15 from arc and got upset 67-50 by Austin Peay in semis of OVC tournament; top-seeded UT-Martin also lost, so OVC finals are 4th-seeded Morehead State against #3 Austin Peay.

        8) Lakers are eight games ahead of any team in Western Conference.

        7) Suns are 34-27 but in 9th place in West; Chicago is 29-34 but is in 8th place in East; in a perfect world, where I'd make all the decisions, any team with a winning record that was going to miss the playoffs would replace playoff team with losing records in other conference.

        6) Nice ceremony for Lute Olson at halftime of Arizona's game with Cal Thursday night, but then Wildcats lost 83-77 to Cal, their fourth loss in row, and they're back squarely on the bubble, maybe under it. Arizona has made the NCAAs 24 years in a row.

        5) Dayton is 3-4 in its last seven games, since its point guard went out for season; that injury could doom them on Selection Sunday.

        4) Iona lost 43-40 to Marist in MAAC tournament; Gaels were just 6-17 at foul line, and shot 32% for game, and lost by three pts. Gaels need to get out there and recruit some shooters.

        3) Villanova is 11-2 in last 13 games and will be popular sleeper for the NCAA's; Wildcats made 13-25 from arc, with +15 turnover ratio in their 97-80 win over bubbicious Providence team Thursday.

        2) Dogs were 12-8 vs spread in conference tournament games Friday.

        1) Two off-board conference tournament finals will be on the board Saturday; East Tennessee-Jacksonville in Atlantic Sun, and Radford-VMI in Big South. This is the Super Bowl for these teams.

Miami Heat at Cleveland Cavaliers [7:30 PM ET]

Heat: Miami guard Dwyane Wade has made his case for the NBA MVP award over the last week, although Cleveland's LeBron James scored two more points than him in the last meeting on Monday and walked away with a 107-100 victory. Wade scored 40 against the Cavs and has hit that mark in three of his last four games. He is also averaging 30.3 points vs. Cleveland this season and totaled 42 in a 108-102 win at Toronto on Friday. “I enjoyed the battle that we had,” Wade said. “You all saw it on ESPN, right? It was a good show.”

Cavs (-9.5, O/U 189): Cleveland owns a 27-1 mark at home this season but suffered a tough 105-94 loss at Boston on Friday. The home team won for the 15th straight time in the series with the Celtics, making James realize just how important home-court advantage could be in the playoffs. “Both teams know it takes on a different meaning because we may face each other late in the season,” James said. “At one point, somebody’s going to have to get a win on the other’s home court.”

Cavs are 1-3 ATS in the last 4 meetings.
The OVER is 7-2 in Cleveland's last 9 Saturday games.

Pick 'n' Roll: Saturday's best NBA bets
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Golden State Warriors at Milwaukee Bucks (-6, 222)

Opening a season-high six-game homestand on a positive note could help the Milwaukee Bucks end their current rough stretch. That's if they can find a way to beat the Golden State Warriors.

On Saturday night, the struggling Bucks look to avoid their season high-tying fourth straight loss as they meet the lowly Warriors.

Milwaukee (29-36) lost for the seventh time in nine games, falling 117-102 on Friday in Chicago. The result also dropped the Bucks one game behind the Bulls, who now own the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Richard Jefferson scored 27 points, Luc Mbah a Moute added a career-high 21 and Ramon Sessions had 20 and 11 assists for Milwaukee, which trailed by 16 in the second quarter and got within three in the fourth before the Bulls pulled away.

"We're digging ourselves way too big a hole," said Milwaukee coach Scott Skiles, whose team is shooting 40.4 percent in its last three games.

Without injured stars Michael Redd (knee) and Andrew Bogut (back), Jefferson continues to pace the Bucks, averaging 18.6 points this season and 24.0 in his last five games. He had 17 in the Bucks' 119-96 loss at Golden State on Dec. 10.

Milwaukee hasn't dropped four straight since Nov. 24-29. Three losses came on the road and the last one was against Central Division-leading Cleveland.

Returning to the Bradley Center, however, could help the Bucks, who are 18-12 there and where they will play 11 of their final 17. That could be important as Milwaukee tries to remain in the mix for its first playoff berth since 2005-06.

Beating Golden State (21-41) won't be an easy task for the Bucks. The Warriors are 6-26 on the road, but have won three of their last four in Milwaukee, including a 119-99 victory on Jan. 19, 2008.

Injuries, though, could prevent Golden State from continuing that success. The Warriors had just eight players available in a 108-91 loss at Detroit on Friday.

Stephen Jackson (hamstring) and Corey Maggette (ankle) - the Warriors top two scorers - missed the game and are questionable for this contest. It's also uncertain if leading rebounder Andris Biedrins will be in the lineup after not playing against Detroit because of personal reasons.

                      Pick: Bucks

Minnesota Timberwolves at Portland Trail Blazers (-13, 202.5)

A loss in their last contest prevented the Portland Trail Blazers from taking the lead in the Northwest Division. A visit from the Minnesota Timberwolves could help them get back on track.

The Trail Blazers go for their 11th straight victory at home and their eighth consecutive win over the lowly Timberwolves on Saturday night.

One night after a thrilling two-point win over Indiana, Portland (38-23) was one-half game behind division-leading Denver heading into a road matchup with the Nuggets on Thursday. Appearing tired, however, the Trail Blazers had their three-game winning streak snapped with a 106-90 loss to Denver.

Portland is now third in the division - one-half game behind surging Utah and a full game back of the Nuggets.

"We have to put this behind us," All-Star guard Brandon Roy told the Trail Blazers' official Web site. "I am disappointed but I don't think we are as frustrated as people think. We are going out and trying. We are pretty positive in here."

That attitude should help against Minnesota (18-43), which has lost eight in a row overall including a 110-90 defeat to the Lakers in Los Angeles on Friday.

The Timberwolves last beat the Blazers 94-93 on March 25, 2007. Portland's seven-game winning streak in the series is currently its longest against any opponent. Minnesota has also lost six in a row at Portland since an 84-74 victory on Dec. 7, 2005.

Ending either drought won't be easy for the Timberwolves. The Trail Blazers are 25-5 at the Rose Garden in 2008-09, and are looking to extend their longest winning streak there since taking 12 in a row from Dec. 6, 2007-Jan. 9, 2008.

This contest opens a key four-game homestand for Portland, which hosts the Western Conference-leading Lakers on Monday and Dallas on Wednesday before finishing with New Jersey next Friday.

                      Pick: Over

St. Louis Blues at Florida Panthers (-160, 5.5)

While the Florida Panthers have a hold on one of the final playoff spots in the Eastern Conference, they are feeling the same sense of urgency as the St. Louis Blues, who are sitting outside the postseason picture in the West.

With both teams looking to end lengthy postseason droughts, the Blues and Panthers meet Saturday night at the BankAtlantic Center for the first time in more than three years.

Just five points separate fourth through 10th place in the East, and Florida (33-24-8) is in the middle of the pack with 74 points, tied with the New York Rangers and Pittsburgh for sixth. Those three are one point behind Montreal and one point ahead of Buffalo and Carolina, which are tied for ninth.

"There's not a team on our schedule we can take lightly or have a letdown against," coach Peter DeBoer told the Panthers' official Web site. "Every game you beat the San Jose Sharks and you lose to a team beneath you, you wind up in the same spot at the end of the day. That's two points out of two games, and that's not enough to make it. We have to play above .500 here."

The Panthers, who haven't reached the playoffs since 2000, are looking to avoid back-to-back losses for the first time since a shootout loss to Buffalo and a regulation defeat to Dallas on Jan. 19 and 21. They failed in a bid to win their third straight Thursday, falling 4-1 to the Penguins after scoring a combined 10 goals in the previous two games.

Tomas Vokoun, who is expected to start his 500th career game Saturday, gave up three third-period goals after Radek Dvorak opened the scoring late in the second period. The Panthers were outshot 47-32.

"We looked like a team that came off a nine-day road trip," DeBoer said. "We hung in there for a little while and Tomas gave us a chance to hang around, but the better team won. We got what we deserved."

Vokoun had won six of his previous eight starts, during which he had a 1.73 goals-against average. He hasn't lost consecutive starts since late December and is 7-0-0 with a 1.00 GAA and a shutout in his last seven games against St. Louis (29-27-8).

The Blues are trying to get back to the postseason for the first time since 2004. They are 12th in the West with 66 points, four behind Nashville, Columbus and Dallas - all tied for sixth in the conference.

                          Pick: Under

Nashville Predators at Philadelphia Flyers (-160, 5.5)

Six wins in a row overall have pulled the Predators into a tie for sixth place in the West, and they'll try to extend their streak Saturday night when they visit the Philadelphia Flyers.

Nashville (33-28-4) was 11th in the conference Feb. 24, four points behind eighth-place Minnesota but also only three points ahead of 15th-place Colorado.

With a perfect homestand, though, the Predators have made a significant climb up the standings. Nashville outscored its opponents 27-11 in winning all five games, and with a 4-2 victory over Columbus on Thursday, pulled into a tie with the Blue Jackets for sixth place.

"This is exactly what we needed, and hopefully we can keep riding it," said Steve Sullivan, who scored the tiebreaking goal late in the second period. "With 17 games left in the season, this is when you want to get hot down the stretch. We're in a dogfight to make the playoffs, and we want to make sure we keep going hard."

Sullivan had four goals and five assists during the homestand, helping lead the way along with Jason Arnott, who had six goals and four assists.

The difference maker for Nashville, though, continues to be goaltender Pekka Rinne. The NHL's rookie of the month for February, Rinne has a 1.82 goals-against average and two shutouts during the six-game winning streak.

A victory over Philadelphia (34-19-10) would give Nashville its longest win streak since an eight-game run to start the 2005-06 season.

The Predators have a 14.3 percent rate of success on the power play to rank among the league's bottom five, while the Flyers' 21.5 percent conversion rate is among the NHL's top eight.

But while Nashville went 5-of-17 during its homestand, Philadelphia's power-play unit has been awful recently. The Flyers have gone 1-for-20 with the man advantage in losing three of four, including 0-for-5 in a 5-1 home defeat to Calgary on Thursday.

                          Pick: Flyers
