          --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ice picks: Wednesday's best NHL bets
          --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Montreal Canadiens at Buffalo Sabres (-112, 6)

With goalie Carey Price struggling in his return from an ankle injury, Montreal coach Guy Carbonneau replaced him with Jaroslav Halak on Feb. 21 against the Senators. Since then, the Canadiens have won four straight to reach fifth place in the Eastern Conference.

Halak shined again Saturday night against West-leading San Jose, making 46 saves in a 3-2 victory.

"As long as we get the wins, that's all we need right now," he said.

Since scoring two goals in each of its four straight losses from Feb. 6-11, Montreal has averaged 3.5 in its last eight, going 5-2-1. Despite ending a five-game goal streak Saturday, Tomas Plekanec recorded a point in his eighth straight and has seven goals and six assists in that time.

Robert Lang and Andrei Markov, who has a team-leading 50 points, have each scored twice in the last three games, and Alex Kovalev has two goals in his last four.

After dropping their Oct. 10 season opener in a shootout at Buffalo, the Canadiens won five in a row from Oct. 11-20.

          Pick: Montreal +102

Detroit Red Wings at Colorado Avalanche (+171, 6)

Even after their leading goal-scorer went down with an injury, the Detroit Red Wings turned in a strong offensive effort.

They stand a good chance of doing so again against the struggling defense of the Colorado Avalanche.

Marian Hossa is not expected to be available Wednesday night, when the Red Wings visit an Avalanche team that's in jeopardy of its longest losing streak in more than a decade.

Since finishing January with five straight losses, Detroit has stayed in the hunt for the top spot in the Western Conference with an 11-3-1 surge. A win Wednesday would move the Red Wings (41-14-8) one point ahead of idle San Jose and Boston (93 points) for the league lead.

The Red Wings opened their three-game road trip Saturday with an 8-0 loss in Nashville, but responded with a lopsided victory of their own Tuesday night, 5-0 over surging St. Louis.

Tomas Kopecky had a goal and two assists while Chris Osgood stopped 22 shots in his first shutout of the season for the Red Wings, who lost Hossa early in the first period.

The team leader with 34 goals, Hossa went headfirst into the end boards following a check by Blues defenseman Roman Polak. He was hospitalized for observation, but team spokesman John Hahn said a CT scan was negative.

That diagnosis seemed to inspire the Red Wings, who average a league-best 3.7 goals per game and are 16-1-2 when scoring at least five times.

"You're a little concerned, a little worried, but then we got a little update that he was OK," forward Daniel Cleary said. "The one thing we talked about was 'Let's take it to them, let's get this thing out-of-hand.'"

Detroit looks for another strong effort against a Colorado team allowing a conference-worst 3.2 goals per game. The Avalanche got outscored 23-8 while losing the last five contests on its just-completed six-game road trip.

          Pick: Over 6

#2 North Carolina at Virginia Tech [ESPN | 7 ET]

North Carolina (-9.5, O/U 155): The Tar Heels can earn at least a share of the ACC regular-season title with a win against Virginia Tech, and they need to be careful not to be caught looking ahead to Sunday's finale vs. Duke. The Blue Devils sit a half-game behind North Carolina and can win the ACC championship if the Heels lose their last two games. “We’re taking it one game at a time, and we’re not looking ahead,” North Carolina senior Danny Green said. “I feel like if we do the little things, everything else will take care of itself.”

North Carolina is 1-3 ATS in the last 4 meetings.
The OVER is 8-2 in North Carolina's last 10 games overall.

Key Injuries - G Marcus Ginyard (foot) is OUT.

PROJECTED SCORE: 85 (OVER - Total Play of the Day)

Virginia Tech: The Hokies are still fighting for an invitation to the NCAA tournament despite losing four of their last five games. They are coming off a tough 72-65 loss to Duke on Saturday and will finish off the regular season with four straight games against ranked opponents for the first time in school history. “We fought back and got back in the game,” Virginia Tech head coach Seth Greenberg said after losing to the Blue Devils. “We were in position to win the game. Unfortunately we didn’t make the plays you need to make.”

Virginia Tech is 1-6 ATS in its last 7 games overall.
The OVER is 9-3 in Virginia Tech's last 12 home games.

Key Injuries - G Hank Thorns (illness) is questionable.

                  PROJECTED SCORE: 75

San Antonio Spurs at Dallas Mavericks [ESPN | 9 PM ET]

Spurs: San Antonio has won five of the last six meetings with Dallas despite having its three top players (Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker) on the floor in just half of those games. The Spurs crushed the Mavs 93-76 on February 24th despite playing without Duncan and Ginobili and will have Duncan back after he missed three games with a sore knee and quad injury. “I can only shutter to think what would happen had (Duncan and Ginobili) played,” Dallas head coach Rick Carlisle said. Carlisle will find out what happens with Duncan in the lineup on Wednesday.

Spurs are 2-8 ATS in their last 10 Wednesday games.
The UNDER is 6-2 in San Antonio's last 8 Wednesday games.

Key Injuries- G Manu Ginobili (ankle) is OUT.

PROJECTED SCORE: 94 (Side Play of the Day)

Mavs (-1, O/U 186): Dallas could be without one of its best players but will have one back for this meeting with the Spurs. Josh Howard aggravated an ankle injury in a 96-87 loss to Oklahoma City on Monday and did not play in the second half. Jason Terry has played the last two games though after missing eight with a fractured finger. Terry has averaged 24 points vs. San Antonio in two meetings this season while Dirk Nowitzki is averaging 31 in his last three games overall. Both will likely need to keep playing well in order to win this rivalry game.

Mavs are 1-5 SU in the last 6 meetings.
The UNDER is 7-3 in the last 10 meetings.

Key Injuries- F Josh Howard (ankle) is questionable.

                    PROJECTED SCORE: 92
