    Daily Sports Roundup

    Tuesday, March 3

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Suns head east to meet the Magic, the ACC hogs the college hoops spotlight, and the NHL offers up a dozen contests.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The Suns will be looking to get a road win against one of the East's best teams on Tuesday when they take on the Magic in Orlando. Phoenix is coming off an impressive 118-111 home win over the Lakers, with Shaquille O'Neal pouring in 33 points against his old team. Steve Nash sat out with a sprained ankle. The Magic knocked off the Sixers 106-100 in their last game on Saturday, with Hedo Turkoglu picking up 23 points. Rashard Lewis added 23 points as well in the win.

The Lakers will try to get back on track later on Tuesday night when they host lowly Memphis, while Sacramento will get a visit from Indiana in the other California contest. Earlier in the night it'll be Chicago at Charlotte, Denver at Detroit, New Jersey at Milwaukee, and Golden State at Minnesota. As well, the Rockets, who are 8-2 in their past 10 outings, will play at home against Toronto.

    The march toward Madness . . .

There are three big ACC matchups on the college hoops schedule for Tuesday night, with Virginia at Clemson, Wake Forest at Maryland, and Florida State at Duke. The Blue Devils knocked off Virginia Tech 72-65 in their last game, as Kyle Singler and Gerald Henderson each tossed in 21 points. Duke is now 24-5 straight-up on the season, and 14-13-1 against-the-spread. Florida State beat Clemson 73-66 on Saturday, and they're at 22-7 SU and 15-7-1 ATS this season.

Michigan State plays Indiana in Bloomington on Tuesday night, while Gonzaga and Washington will both host unheralded opponents; South Carolina Upstate is at Gonzaga, while Seattle visits Washington. As well, conference tournaments get underway on Tuesday, with opening-round matchups for both the Horizon League and the Ohio Valley Conference; those continue for the rest of the week.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

The NHL offers up a dozen games on Tuesday night as the league approaches its Wednesday trade deadline. Highlighting the early part of the slate is an Eastern clash between the Flyers and Bruins in Boston. Philadelphia is 6-3-1 in their past 10 games, but they've dropped consecutive decisions to the Canadiens and Devils. Boston is struggling on a 3-4-3 run, and they lost to the Caps 4-3 in overtime on Saturday; the Bruins went 1-0-1 against the Flyers back in February.

Atlanta will host Florida on Tuesday, with Carolina at Washington, Los Angeles at Columbus, Pittsburgh at Tampa Bay, Calgary at Ottawa, New Jersey at Toronto, Edmonton at Nashville, Detroit at St. Louis, and Anaheim at Chicago. Out on the west coast the Wild will be in Vancouver for a game against the Canucks, while the Sharks will be looking to grab a victory versus the Stars at home in San Jose.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

College hoops conference tournaments will elevate many schools from bubble teams to March Madness participants, but it's a tourney lock that's pegged as the big Vegas favorite to win it all right now. North Carolina is listed at 17/10 odds to win this year's championship, as they sit ahead of Connecticut (5/1), Pittsburgh (6/1), and Louisville (10/1) on that list. Duke and Oklahoma both hold down 12/1 odds heading into the final week of college basketball's regular season, with UCLA at 15/1, and Wake Forest at 18/1. Always-popular Gonzaga is back at 40/1.

Tuesday's List of 13: Random thoughts on a cold, snowy night....

        13) Weird sitaution here in Albany this weekend, as two conference tournaments are going on within ten miles of each other, in a city not exactly known for supporting sporting events.

        12) MAAC tournament is in downtown Albany, with Siena #1 seed and expected to advance to NCAAs; their first game is Saturday at 5. Siena is very popular in this area and routinely draws 6,000 or more fans to their games in an arena that seats 14,000. If they were to play Niagara in the finals Monday night, they'll get a crowd of 10,000+.

        11) UAlbany is hosting the America East tournament in its campus arena, which seats 4,500; unfortunately, the Great Danes didn't play well down the stretch, and should get knocked out when they play at noon Saturday against Vermont. Not sure what kind of crowds there will be in the arena once the Great Danes get eliminated, especially in light of the more popular MAAC tourney going on at the same time.

        10) If this is a stupid question, I apologize, but why would it be such a bad thing if AIG went out of business? Why do they need to keep getting bailed out by the government? Shouldn't they be replaced by a company that will do its business better?

        9) LA Clippers used their 26th different starting lineup in their 61st game last night. Must be a lot of fun rooting for them.

        8) Drexel Dragons lost their last three conference games, all by single point: 49-48/47-46/48-47. Needless to say, they can defend, but they can't throw the ball in the freakin' ocean.

        7) Saw something Sunday I haven't seen in the shot clock era: at the Buffalo-Ohio game, they went to the first TV timeout 0-0, with the first points in game scored with 15:08 left in first half. Then the TV feed was lost in the second half, so when the game got good near the end, we couldn't see it. MAC doesn't have a good hoops TV package like they do in football. Thats too bad.

        6) A marketing research firm did survery examining how popular big league baseball teams are, just in their own city, and they found out the Kansas City Royals are less popular in their city than any other major league team is in their city. Winning might help that some.

        5) Baylor Bears are having such a disappointing season, they tried taking the names off the players' uniforms, as a motivational tool to shake things up. It hasn't worked yet. Bears look NIT-bound.

        4) Patrick Mills has been cleared to return for St Mary's, making the Gaels a likely NCAA team and a dangerous first round opponent, as well as a threat to Gonzaga's undefeated run in the WCC.

        3) Dick Vitale loses a lot of credibility when he insists on shilling for Notre Dame (where both his daughters went to school); they're not, I repeat, they're not going to the NCAAs unless they win the Big East tournament next week in New York. Enough already.

        2) We lost a media giant over the weekend, when Paul Harvey died at age 90; one of the greatest voices of all-time, this radio newsman was on the air weekdays for decades- my mother used to listen to him all the time. Harvey had a flair for story-telling that was unmatched in the annals of radio. He will be missed.

        1) March Madness starts tonight, with four games each in the Ohio Valley Conference and Horizon League conference tournaments. It is a great time of year if you love basketball-- enjoy!!!!

Denver Nuggets at Detroit Pistons [7:30 PM ET]

Nuggets: Denver point guard Chauncey Billups will make his first appearance at The Palace of Auburn Hills since being dealt to the Nuggets earlier in the season. Neither team can deny the impact Billups had in Detroit, as he was named NBA Finals MVP in 2004 when the Pistons beat the Lakers. “I’m sure it will be emotional,” Billups said. “I had a lot of great years there. I’m sure it’s always going to be my home away from home. It will be pretty emotional, but it will be a lot of fun.” Denver will likely be without Carmelo Anthony, who was suspended one game by the team for an "in-game transgression" that occurred Sunday against Indiana.

Nuggets are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games overall.
The UNDER is 7-3 in Denver's last 10 games overall.

Key Injuries - F Carmelo Anthony (personal) is OUT.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Pistons (NA): The home crowd is expected to give Billups a warm welcome before the game, so Detroit's focus will be on taking advantage of the weaknesses of a player they know better than anybody. “Chauncey should get a tremendous ovation,” Pistons GM Joe Dumars said. “And, he will get a tremendous ovation. He deserves it.” Billups believes all will be forgotten when the game starts. “Bottom line is, I just want to win,” Billups said. “It will be emotional, sure, but once we jump that ball up, all that’s out the window.”

Pistons are 7-23 ATS in their last 30 home games.
The UNDER is 10-4 in the last 14 meetings.

Key Injuries - G Allen Iverson (back) is doubtful.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Pick ‘n’ Roll: NBA best bets
                -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New Jersey Nets at Milwaukee Bucks (-3, 205.5)

Considering what the Milwaukee Bucks have dealt with this season, the fact that they're in playoff position this late in the season is a major accomplishment.

Milwaukee looks to strengthen its grip on a postseason spot Tuesday night as it hosts a New Jersey Nets team that's also battling to make the Eastern Conference playoffs.

The Bucks (29-33) avoided a third consecutive loss with a 109-93 home victory over Washington on Saturday. Milwaukee, loser of four of its last five, has won two straight at home.

"I wouldn't say it was easy, but it was very convincing," said guard Ramon Sessions, who posted his fifth double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 assists. "It was a win we felt like we needed to have after losing two in a row against Dallas and New Orleans."

Milwaukee leads Chicago by one game and New Jersey by 1 1/2 for the final playoff spot. The Bucks have more wins through 62 games than they did in each of the last two seasons, when they missed the playoffs.

Milwaukee is trying to make the postseason without star guard Michael Redd, who's out for the season with torn ligaments in his left knee, and center Andrew Bogut, sidelined indefinitely with a stress fracture in his back.

                Pick: Milwaukee -3

Chicago Bulls at Charlotte Bobcats (-2.5, 192.5)

The Charlotte Bobcats haven't made the playoffs in their first four seasons, but they're hoping a three-game winning streak to close a lengthy road trip can help propel them to that goal.

The Bobcats look to win a fourth straight game for the first time in nearly a year Tuesday night when they host the Chicago Bulls - one of the teams ahead of them in the Eastern Conference.

Charlotte (25-35) suffered double-digit losses at Houston and Phoenix to open a five-game western trip, leaving it 13 games below .500 and five games out of the East's final playoff spot.

The Bobcats, though, concluded the trip with games against three of the West's worst teams and took full advantage. Gerald Wallace's 27 points lifted Charlotte past Sacramento on Wednesday, Raymond Felton scored 26 to pace a three-point victory over Golden State on Friday and Emeka Okafor had 28 points Saturday to give Charlotte a trip-closing 100-95 win over the Los Angeles Clippers.

The Bobcats, who haven't won four in a row since a five-game run from March 2-8, 2008, have pulled within three games of Milwaukee for the eighth playoff spot. There are three teams between them and the Bucks, however, including Chicago (27-33), which is one game back.

Charlotte has to be encouraged by the close victories over the Warriors and Clippers. The Bobcats were 4-16 in games decided by five points or fewer prior to those wins.

                Pick: Charlotte -2.5

#8 Michigan State at Indiana [ESPN | 7 PM ET]

Michigan State (-14, O/U 133): The Spartans are looking to win their first outright Big Ten championship in 10 years and can accomplish that feat by winning one of their last two games. They are coming off a huge 74-66 win at Illinois on Sunday thanks to a 16-8 run to end the game. “Defensively we were awfully good,” Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo said. “So maybe my team is growing up a little bit.” The Spartans routed Indiana 75-47 in the first meeting back on February 7th.

Michigan State is 7-1-1 ATS in its last 9 road games.
The OVER is 7-2-1 in the last 10 meetings.

Key Injuries - G Isaiah Dahlman (ankle) is OUT.

                        PROJECTED SCORE: 68

Indiana: Hoosiers head coach Tom Crean knows all about Michigan State as a former assistant coach under Izzo when the Spartans last won an outright conference title. The two remain good friends, so it will be interesting to see whether or not Izzo runs it up against Crean's Indiana squad. “(The Spartans) execute at a very high level and there are some things that they do as well as anyone in the country,” Crean said. “There is a `never say die,’ ‘never quit’ attitude to them."

Home team is 14-2 ATS in the last 16 meetings.

Auburn at Alabama [ESPN | 9 PM ET]

Auburn: The Tigers are the second-hottest team in the SEC behind conference champ LSU, winning six of their last seven games following a 76-58 rout of Mississippi State on Saturday. The Bulldogs shot just 35.1 percent from the field and turned the ball over 18 times against Auburn. “I’m awfully proud of my team,” Tigers head coach Jeff Lebo said. “Defensively, we were very solid for the entire game.”

Auburn is 7-0 ATS in its last 7 games overall.
The UNDER is 7-1 in Auburn's last 8 road games.

Key Injuries - F Johnnie Lett (ankle) is questionable.

Alabama (-1.5, O/U 143.5): Like Auburn, the Crimson Tide is coming off an easy victory on Saturday. Alabama crushed Mississippi 90-69 to run its winning streak to three games and now hopes to spoil the Tigers' opportunity to get into the Big Dance. “We talked a bunch about our rebounding,” Alabama head coach Philip Pearson said after winning at Ole Miss. “We gave up three or four put-backs, but I felt we did a good job for the most part, which I thought was going to be a big part of the game. We had a lot of guys contribute.”

Alabama is 1-5 ATS in the last 6 meetings.
The UNDER is 10-3 in Alabama's last 13 Tuesday games.

Key Injuries - G Ronald Steele (foot) is OUT.

Wake Forest Demon Deacons at Maryland Terrapins (1.5, 151)

The Terrapins have won four of six, however, and are suddenly back in the NCAA tournament picture after losing five of their previous seven.

A win over the Demon Deacons would likely get them closer to a bid and they've had little trouble beating Wake lately.

Maryland has won four straight over the Demon Deacons since an 81-66 loss on Jan. 11, 2005. The Terps have also won the last two home meetings and seven of the last eight in Maryland.

As freshmen last season, Teague averaged 9.5 points on 7-of-23 shooting in two games against Maryland, while Johnson averaged 19.5 points and 11.5 rebounds.

They haven't met since Greivis Vasquez led the Terrapins with 24 points and eight assists in a 74-70 win at Wake on Feb. 28, 2008.

Vasquez has been instrumental to Maryland's late-season run and had another stellar performance Sunday.

After scoring just 10 points and being limited by foul trouble in Wednesday's 78-67 loss to seventh-ranked Duke, Vasquez scored 21 of his 33 points in the second half against the Wolfpack. It was his second 30-point outing in three games. He had 35 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists in last weekend's 88-85 overtime upset over then-No. 3 North Carolina.

"I'm trying to take my game to a different level," said Vasquez, who averaged 23.0 points on 54.8 percent shooting and 8.0 assists against Wake last season. "I'm just trying to lead these guys to something special. I think we have a tough team that can make it to the NCAAs."

Maryland, tied for seventh with Virginia Tech, closes the regular season Saturday at rival Virginia.

                          Pick: Under 151

Virginia Cavaliers at Clemson Tigers (-15, 146.5)

Clemson realizes how important momentum can be heading into the March tournaments, which is why its struggles in February were so frustrating.

The No. 18 Tigers look to avoid losing three straight for the first time in more than two years Tuesday when they host Virginia in their final home game of the season.

After beginning February with a 27-point rout of then-No. 4 Duke, Clemson (22-6, 8-6 ACC) dropped four of its remaining seven games in the month, closing it with a 73-66 loss at then-No. 23 Florida State on Saturday. The Tigers committed a season-high 23 turnovers and leading scorer Trevor Booker - averaging a team-high 15.2 points - was held to eight as they fell out of contention for their first-ever ACC title and into a tie for fifth with Boston College.

Clemson, which was one loss behind conference-leader North Carolina in the loss column last week, has split its last 12 games after a 16-0 start.

"We've got to get back home and take care of business," coach Oliver Purnell said.

With a victory in this game or their regular-season finale at No. 10 Wake Forest, the Tigers would have a winning record in ACC play in consecutive seasons for the first time since 1965-66 and 1966-67. The Tigers are 12-3 at Littlejohn Coliseum, and they haven't dropped three in a row overall since a four-game slide Feb. 14-24, 2007.

                          Pick: Clemson -15
