    Daily Sports Roundup

    Sunday, March 1

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: Matt Kenseth guns for the win in Vegas, the Lakers take on the Suns, and the college hoops slate offers up ranked matchups.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

There are several marquee matchups on the NBA's schedule for Sunday, including the Lakers on the road in Phoenix. Los Angeles is a sparkling 3-0 against the Suns so far this year, most recently pounding their division rival 132-106 at home on February 26. The last time these two teams met in the desert was back on November 20, when the Lakers came away with a 105-92 victory.

San Antonio will be in Portland in another big Western Conference clash on Sunday, while top Eastern matchups include Detroit at Boston and Cleveland at Atlanta. As well, it'll be New Orleans at New Jersey, Denver at Indiana, Houston at Minnesota, Toronto at Dallas, and Utah at Golden State. The Warriors got the better of the Jazz the last time they met, winning 116-96 at home on February 8.

    The march toward Madness . . .

There are six ranked teams in action on the college hoops schedule for Sunday, but those half-dozen squads are only spread out over three games. First up is No. 8 Marquette at No. 6 Louisville at 12:00pm ET, with the Golden Eagles trying to bounce back from a loss to UConn on Wednesday. Marquette sits at 23-5 SU and 11-11-1 ATS on the season, while Louisville is at 22-5 SU and 17-10 ATS.

Next up is No. 11 Missouri at No. 15 Kansas in a Big 12 battle at 2:00pm ET. Those two teams are a combined 47-9 SU this season, and they've both been good to bettors - Missouri is 13-7-1 ATS, and Kansas is 16-6-1 ATS. Finally, the Big Ten offers up No. 9 Michigan State at No. 20 Illinois at 4:00pm ET. The Spartans are 22-5 SU and 13-11 ATS; the Illini are at 23-6 SU and 15-10-1 ATS.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

The Flyers will make the short trip to New Jersey on Sunday afternoon to take on the rival Devils. The last time those two teams met was back on December 21, when the Devils picked up a 3-2 home win. In fact, New Jersey is on a two-game winning streak against Philly, also grabbing a victory on December 4. The Flyers won the first two meetings between these Atlantic Division clubs back in October.

The Penguins will also hit the ice on Sunday afternoon, as they'll be on the road in Dallas to meet the Stars. Rounding out the NHL schedule for Sunday: Los Angeles at Chicago, Florida at Washington, Tampa Bay at Calgary, and Columbus at Vancouver. The Blue Jackets blanked the Oilers 1-0 on Thursday.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

Matt Kenseth will be seeking his third consecutive Sprint Cup Series victory on Sunday afternoon when he takes the track in the Shelby 427 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Kenseth, though, only sits at 8/1 on the Vegas odds list to get the win in Vegas, where he trails Carl Edwards (4/1), Jimmie Johnson (5/1), and Kyle Busch (6/1). Jeff Gordon is also pegged at 8/1 odds to get the victory on Sunday.

As well, the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship wraps up on Sunday, with the final match between Geoff Ogilvy and Paul Casey. Ogilvy got past Stewart Cink 4&2 in the semifinals Saturday, while Casey beat Ross Fisher 2&1.

      Six-pack for Sunday

News and notes from Saturday's spring training games.......

-- Barry Zito pitched two scoreless innings in his 2009 debut......

-- Carl Pavano pitched two perfect innings in his Indian debut.

-- Aaron Heilman struck out four in two innings as a Cub starter.

-- If you're a Toronto fan and you see Marco Scutaro batting in the leadoff spot, even on February 28, it can't be a good thing.

-- Skip Schumaker is off to a 4-9 start batting leadoff and playing second base for the Cardinals, who have a glut of outfielders.

-- Delmon Young is hitting a fat .857 this spring (6-7).

Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a basketball Saturday......

        13) It gets a little tiresome hearing bubble speculation every time you see a final score involving a marginal team; today is March 1-- maybe the word bubble should be off limits until we get to March.

        12) Duke drew seven offensive fouls in a 72-65 win at Virginia Tech; must say I can't remember seeing any team, much less a visitor with that many drawn charges in one game. Lets just say the Hokies were not terribly enthusiastic about the quality of the game's officiating. .

        11) Butler probably wants to avoid Cleveland State in the Horizon tournament; they beat the Vikings twice, but by 50-48/58-56 scores.

        10) Villanova shot 33%, turned ball over 20 times in 56-54 home loss to Georgetown that probably costs Wildcats a shot at the double-bye that goes to the Big East's top four teams.

        9) LSU has won 13 consecutive SEC games after losing their opener; you'd have to give Trent Johnson a nod for National Coach of Year.

        8) Gonzaga and Memphis stayed unbeaten in their league with road wins, Air Force and DePaul stayed winless with home losses.

        7) Tennessee-Martin clinched #1 seed in Ohio Valley tournament as they beat Morehead State 79-65 on Senior Day of the best season in Skyhawk history. They have a terrific set of guards.

        6) Washington nipped Arizona 83-78, now needs a win next week in rivalry game vs hot Washington State team to clinch its first outright regular season conference championship since 50's. Huskies shared a title with USC in the early 80's.

        5) Auburn won sixth game in last seven tries by beating Mississippi State in Starkville, 76-58; Tigers are athletic and really quick, playing four guards at once a lot of the time.

        4) Cal-Northridge beat Long Beach State 95-74 in battle of two best teams in a weak Big West Conference.

        3) Utah State lost its third straight road game, getting drilled by the Nevada Wolf Pack, 84-71 in Reno. Aggies are 13-2 in WAC, but will be a shaky top seed when the conference tournament gets underway.

        2) Cornell is another team that can't stand prosperity; they lost 71-70 at Harvard, are now 9-3 in Ivy League, leading Princeton by game and a half, and they still have to play the Tigers again. Remember, there is no conference tournament in the Ivy, so whomever wins the regular season goes to the NCAA's. Cornell isn't nearly as good as last year.

        1) Lot of big ballgames Sunday: Missouri-Kansas, Tennessee-Florida Michigan-Wisconsin, Marquette-Louisville, Michigan State-Illinois, so we'll be sure to hear the b-word (bubble) way more than needed. Here are some hints for the TV people:
-- Everyone needs to keep winning.
-- There is no such thing as a must-win until we get to the conference tournaments, when actual elimination of teams takes place.
-- Marginal teams might need the game more, but chances are, they're not as good as the team thats above them in the standings.

            -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Detroit Pistons at Boston Celtics [ABC | 1 PM ET]

Pistons: Judging from Friday's performance at Orlando, Rip Hamilton will likely stay in the starting lineup for the rest of the season. Hamilton scored a game-high 31 points in Detroit's 93-85 upset of the Magic after coming off the bench in the previous 16 games. The Pistons were 4-12 in those games. “It wasn’t something that I felt was added pressure because this is what I do,” Hamilton said . “This is my comfort zone. But it is what it is and we got a win and that was a great thing.”

Pistons are 3-13 ATS in their last 16 Sunday games.
The UNDER is 13-3 in Detroit's last 16 Sunday games.

Key Injuries - G Allen Iverson (back) is day-to-day.

            PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Celtics (-9.5, O/U 180): Two lottery picks from the 1996 draft could very well be the difference in this game. Ray Allen has averaged 26 points on nearly 59 percent shooting from the field in the last four games while new addition Stephon Marbury scored eight points off the bench in his first game with the team on Friday, resulting in a 104-99 win over Indiana. “I think I was just so happy to be out there playing and happy to be out there playing with those guys,” Marbury said. “I was tired but my legs were heavy. In the fourth quarter I found some energy. It went the way I was praying for it to go.”

Celtics are 17-7 ATS in their last 24 Sunday games.
The UNDER is 14-3 in the last 17 meetings.

Key Injuries - F Kevin Garnett (knee) is OUT.
F Brian Scalabrine (neck) is OUT.
G Gabriel Pruitt (suspension) is OUT.

            PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Los Angeles Lakers at Phoenix Suns [ESPN | 3:30 PM ET]

Lakers: LA will be facing Phoenix for the second time in four days, and it remains to be seen whether or not Suns point guard Steve Nash will return to the court after missing the last two games with an ankle injury. The Lakers were able to push the pace without Nash playing on Thursday, opening up a 39-26 lead after the first quarter en route to a 132-106 victory. However, they saw their six-game winning streak come to an end the next day at Denver in a 90-79 loss. The team shot less than 30 percent from the field for just the second time since moving to LA.

Lakers are 8-3 ATS in their last 11 road games.
The OVER is 8-1 in LA's last 9 games vs. Pacific Division.

Key Injuries - C Andrew Bynum (knee) is OUT.

            PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Suns (NA): Phoenix center Shaquille O'Neal is coming off his best game since playing for the Lakers nearly six years ago. O'Neal made 20-of-25 shots and scored a season-high 45 points in a 133-113 rout of Toronto on Friday to help the Suns bounce back from a loss at LA on Thursday. “If I can get the touches like that, it doesn’t matter who is down there,” O'Neal said. “They’re going to have to double or triple me down there. If they don’t, especially with the way I’m shooting free throws, they will have to pay.”

Suns are 2-6 ATS in the last 8 meetings.
The OVER is 7-1 in Phoenix's last 8 games overall.

Key Injuries - PG Steve Nash (ankle) is day-to-day.
C Amare Stoudemire (eye) it OUT.

            PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Cleveland Cavaliers at Atlanta Hawks [ESPN | 8 PM ET]

Cavs (-4, O/U 189.5): LeBron James will look to follow up an outstanding performance against the Spurs on Friday when he faces the Hawks. James bounced back from a terrible outing in a loss at Houston on Thursday by scoring 31 points and grabbing 14 rebounds in a 97-86 victory at San Antonio a day later even though he sat out the entire fourth quarter. “That’s the best thing about the NBA,” James said. “You can play as bad as you ever played one night and the NBA schedule allows you to make up for it the next night.”

Cavs are 7-2 ATS in the last 9 meetings at Atlanta.
The UNDER is 8-2 in Cleveland's last 10 games vs. Eastern Conference.

Key Injuries - C Ben Wallace (leg) is OUT.
F Sasha Pavlovic (ankle) is OUT.

            PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Hawks: Atlanta broke an 11-game winning streak for Cleveland the last time the teams met back on December 13th. This time, the Hawks will simply be looking to win back-to-back games for the first time since February 11th. Al Horford has scored more than 20 points in consecutive games for the first time in his career, and the Hawks are 8-1 when he scores at least 15 this season. “We went to him and utilized him more, and coming down the stretch, that’s something that we are going to have to continue to do,” said Atlanta head coach Mike Woodson.

Hawks are 7-1 ATS in their last 8 games vs. Central Division.
The OVER is 17-5-1 in Atlanta's last 23 games vs. Central Division.

            Key Injuries - NONE

            PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Pick ‘n’ Roll: NBA best bets
              -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Toronto Raptors at Dallas Mavericks (-6.5, 207.5)

Fighting for a playoff spot in the crowded Western Conference, Dallas looks to close its three-game homestand with another victory. Facing a struggling Toronto Raptors team that hasn't won in Dallas in nine seasons could be the matchup the Mavericks are looking for.

Dallas goes for its fifth straight win at American Airlines Center on Sunday night while Toronto looks for just its second victory on the road since January.

The Mavericks (35-23) won their second in a row Friday, defeating Oklahoma City 110-108 in overtime. Dallas trailed 85-73 with 6:20 remaining, but Dirk Nowitzki scored 12 of the Mavericks' final 20 points in regulation and added five more in the extra five minutes to finish with 41.

Nowitzki's fourth 40-plus point game this season helped the Mavericks improve to 21-4 at home since dropping their first four there in 2008-09.

"It was definitely a lucky win," said Nowitzki, who had 40 points in his previous three games. "It doesn't happen very often when you're down that much that late and come back."

Super sub Jason Terry has missed the last eight games following surgery to repair a fracture in his left hand. There is no set date for his return.

Jason Kidd scored all 10 of his points in overtime Friday after missing all five shot attempts in regulation. He added 13 assists as Dallas won for the fourth time in six games following the All-Star break.

Toronto finds itself near the East basement with nine losses in its last 13 games. Friday's 133-113 defeat at Phoenix was the Raptors' second straight on the road and fifth in six tries away from the Air Canada Centre.

Winning in Dallas has been even more challenging for the Raptors, who have dropped eight straight there since a 109-104 victory Dec. 30, 1999.

On Friday, the Raptors nearly won their first game in Phoenix in five seasons but were outscored by 16 in the final 12 minutes.

              Pick: Over

Cleveland Cavaliers at Atlanta Hawks (+4, 189.5)

The Atlanta Hawks know Al Horford can rebound, as the third overall pick in the 2007 NBA draft was the leader in that category among rookies last season.

They're starting to see what he's capable of offensively as well.Horford has topped 20 points in consecutive games for the first time in his career, a feat he may be hard-pressed to repeat Sunday night when the Hawks host the Cleveland Cavaliers, the league's stingiest defensive team.

Lately, however, Horford seems to be figuring out how to become a consistent scorer. He had 21 points on Wednesday as Atlanta (33-25) closed its six-game road trip with a tough 110-109 loss at Denver.

Facing Miami, the Hawks' closest pursuer in the race for the fourth spot in the Eastern Conference, Horford again scored 21 and grabbed a career-high 22 rebounds in a 91-83 win.

Atlanta has its share of scorers - Joe Johnson, Mike Bibby, Josh Smith and Marvin Williams average 66.1 points - but it's a better team when Horford is contributing offensively. The Hawks are 8-1 when he scores 15 or more points.

"We went to him and utilized him more, and coming down the stretch, that's something that we are going to have to continue to do," coach Mike Woodson said.

LeBron James had 33 points and nine assists in that loss, but the NBA's reigning scoring champion played one of his worst games Thursday at Houston. James was held to 21 points while failing to record an assist for the first time in his career as Cleveland began a stretch of four road games in five nights with an ugly 93-74 loss.

James and the Cavaliers didn't waste time bouncing back. He had 30 points, 14 rebounds and four assists Friday at San Antonio, sitting out the fourth quarter as Cleveland cruised to a 97-86 victory.

The Cavaliers, who allow 90.5 points per game, could use a big game from Zydrunas Ilgauskas inside against Horford. The 7-foot-3 center had 17 points in Cleveland's 110-96 victory over the Hawks on Nov. 22, but sat out the loss in December with a sprained ankle.

              Pick: Cleveland

#8 Missouri at #15 Kansas [CBS | 2 PM ET]

Missouri: The Tigers were able to pull off an amazing comeback the last time they faced Kansas, sneaking out a 62-60 victory. They rallied back from a 14-point deficit after scoring just 16 points in the first half. The key to that victory was turnovers, as Mizzou ranks second in the country in steals with an average of 10.9 per game. The Tigers have already totaled a school-record 304 steals in 28 games. “They turned us over 27 times,” Kansas center Cole Aldrich said. “And that’s two games worth plus a little more for us, in just one game. It’s a tough pressure whether we’re in Columbia or in Lawrence. They were really relentless throughout the whole game. It was tough. It definitely can wear teams out.”

Missouri is 6-1 ATS in its last 7 games overall.
The UNDER is 3-1 in Missouri's last 4 games overall.

                      Key Injuries - NONE

                      PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Kansas (-4.5, O/U 150): The Jayhawks blame themselves for losing at Missouri back on February 9th and have responded by winning four straight since then. The defending national champs are going for their fifth straight Big 12 championship despite that loss and find themselves atop the conference standings with a stellar 12-1 mark. “I thought we gave that game away,” Kansas guard Sherron Collins said. “I’m not mad at them. I’m more frustrated with ourselves. We had the game in our hands and we let it slip away. We practically gave it to them by turning it over and making dumb mistakes late in the game. It’s a (rematch) we’re looking forward to.”

Kansas is 15-3-1 ATS in its last 19 games vs. Big 12.
The UNDER is 7-2 in Kansas' last 9 games overall.

Missouri Tigers at Kansas Jayhawks (-4.5, 144)

Excitement is always high when Missouri visits Allen Fieldhouse. This time, so are the stakes.

Nothing less than a chance for the Tigers' first men's championship in any Big 12 sport will be on the line Sunday when No. 11 Missouri (24-4, 11-2 Big 12) goes after a season sweep of archrival Kansas.

To the No. 15 Jayhawks (23-5, 12-1), conference titles are old hat. They're gunning for their fifth straight and ninth in 13 years. A touch of revenge for a disheartening 62-60 loss at Missouri last month when they let a 14-point lead evaporate in a hail of turnovers would also please the 16,300 fans who will put up a deafening roar from the opening tip to the final buzzer.

But for Jayhawk followers who figure Missouri's pressure defense will be harder to run in Allen Fieldhouse, coach Bill Self has sobering words.

"I told our guys as soon as the game (at Missouri) was over, that it will be harder to beat Missouri at home than it was beating Missouri in Columbia," Self said. "Missouri didn't play well against us in Columbia. They scored 16 points in the first half, and this is a team that's averaging 80 points a game."

It'll be a showdown between two of the nation's hottest teams. Other than Memphis, no top-major team in the country can beat the 11-1 mark that both Kansas and Missouri have compiled in the last dozen games.

The Tigers have been stuck in high gear ever since their second-half comeback against the Jayhawks at home on Feb. 9, putting together one of the greatest turnaround seasons in the country. They're already eight games better than last year's 16-16 record.

For the Tigers to win, they'll probably have to keep the 6-foot-11 Aldrich from dominating inside. The rapidly improving sophomore, one of only two men in the Big 12 averaging a double-double, had 15 rebounds in the first meeting.

Charged with beating the Missouri pressure will be Kansas point guard Sherron Collins, who leads the Jayhawks in scoring and hit a series of backbreaking 3-pointers in the closing minutes of Monday's victory at No. 3 Oklahoma.

No doubt, winning that first game should give the Tigers confidence. But in Allen Fieldhouse, Kansas has prevailed over its ancient rival nine games in a row.

                        Pick: Kansas

Michigan State Spartans at Illinois Fighting Illini (-1, 123)

Michigan State is on the verge of winning its first Big Ten title in eight years, but it's hardly been playing like a championship-caliber team lately. The Spartans have picked up victories against some of the league's weaker teams over the past few weeks, but another lackluster effort likely won't be enough against Illinois, one of the best defensive teams in the nation.

No. 9 Michigan State looks to break out of its offensive funk and earn a share of the Big Ten title Sunday when it visits the 20th-ranked Illini, who are trying to keep their conference title hopes alive.

The Spartans (22-5, 12-3) have a 1 1/2-game lead in the Big Ten over Illinois (23-6, 11-5) and No. 16 Purdue, and still have three games remaining to just two for both the Illini and Boilermakers.

After this game, Michigan State visits last-place Indiana on Tuesday before closing the regular season at home against Purdue next Sunday.

Despite being within one victory of its first conference title since winning four straight from 1998-2001, Michigan State has struggled lately.

The Spartans have won three of their last four games, but looked awful in a 72-54 loss at Purdue on Feb. 17, and didn't look very sharp in victories over Michigan, Wisconsin and Iowa.

Michigan State boasts the top-ranked scoring offense in the Big Ten (72.9), but is averaging 57.8 points on 41.3 percent shooting in its last four.

Illinois has the nation's second-ranked defense (55.7 points) and has yielded 68 points or less in 27 of 29 games. In eight conference home games, the Illini have allowed an average of 47.9 points on 35.0 percent shooting.

Michigan State defeated Illinois 63-57 at home on Jan. 17, but it wasn't easy. The Spartans rallied from a nine-point second-half deficit, and Lucas, who is averaging 14.4 points, finished with 10 on just 3-of-13 shooting.

                        Pick: Under

Los Angeles Kings at Chicago Blackhawks (-230, 5.5)

The Blackhawks enter this contest having lost three straight (0-2-1) overall, including twice at home. They're trying to hold on to fourth place in the Western Conference and home-ice advantage for the first round of the playoffs but have struggled at the United Center in recent weeks.

Chicago is 1-3-2 at home after an 8-1-0 stretch. This will be the teams' first meeting at the United Center since a 3-2 Kings overtime win on Dec. 30, 2007.

Despite their recent problems, the Blackhawks boast a strong home record at 15-5-6. Also, the Kings are 1-3-0 on the road after winning their previous five.

Chicago could use another big game from Jonathan Toews, especially if it struggles to contain Los Angeles again. Toews had his first career hat trick in the Blackhawks' 5-4 overtime loss to Pittsburgh on Friday night.

Toews continues to be a bright spot for Chicago, posting eight goals and four assists in his last seven games. The 20-year-old center has a team-high 25 goals in 60 games, one more than he had in 64 contests as a rookie last season.

With winger Patrick Sharp (knee) out, Chicago needs Toews to continue his hot streak. Sharp, second on the team with 23 goals, will miss his seventh straight game.

Cristobal Huet remains a mainstay in net, making a franchise-record eight straight starts. He has struggled in his last two games, though, allowing nine goals in a little less than five periods.

Huet has started both of Chicago's games against Los Angeles, giving up eight goals.

But the Kings have scored twice in regulation over their last three games after finding the back of the net 15 times in their previous four. Los Angeles, which will be making the fourth stop on a five-game trip, lost 2-1 to Detroit on Friday night.

The Kings struggled offensively again, even with captain Dustin Brown making his return after missing two games to be with his wife for the birth of their child. Brown, second on the team with 48 points (23 goals, 25 assists), had two goals and an assist in a win over Chicago on Jan. 29.

                            Pick: Under

Columbus Blue Jackets at Vancouver Canucks (-175, 5.5)

The Blue Jackets look to continue their newfound dominance of the Canucks and move into a fifth-place tie in the Western Conference when they wrap up their three-game swing Sunday night in Vancouver.

After opening its trip Tuesday with a 4-1 loss at Northwest Division-leading Calgary, the Blue Jackets (31-25-6) again managed only a single goal - a third-period tally by Raffi Torres - Thursday in Edmonton. This time, though, rookie Steve Mason made the goal stand up, stopping 19 shots for his eighth shutout of the season in the 1-0 victory.

That kept Columbus ahead of the Oilers in the tightly-packed West, where only 13 points separate fifth-place Vancouver (31-22-8) from last-place Colorado.

Beating the Canucks would similarly help the Blue Jackets, who would tie Vancouver in the standings with a victory at GM Place. They would also sweep the season series for the first time.

This time, though, the Blue Jackets must contend with a Vancouver club has won five of its last six games and nine of 11 since the start of February. The Canucks completed a perfect 4-0-0 month at home Friday with a 2-1 victory over Tampa Bay.

                            Pick: Canucks
