    Daily Sports Roundup

    Friday, February 27

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The NBA puts 28 teams on the hardwood, while the Flames and Wild take the ice in a meeting between Northwest rivals.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA offers up a busy 14-game slate on Friday night, with the Cavaliers playing in San Antonio in the night's marquee matchup. Those two teams haven't met since February 2008, when the Spurs rolled to a 112-105 road win. The other two high-powered matchups on Friday night have the Lakers in Denver to meet the Nuggets, while Dwyane Wade and the Heat head out to battle Atlanta.

Chicago is at Washington and Orlando hosts Detroit in the two earliest games on the Friday schedule, while it's also Philadelphia at New York, Indiana at Boston, Milwaukee at New Orleans, Portland at Minnesota, Oklahoma City at Dallas, Toronto at Phoenix, the Clippers at Sacramento, and Charlotte at Golden State. The Warriors last played on Monday, when the Clippers defeated them 118-105.

    The march toward Madness . . .

The usual Ivy League action highlights the college hoops schedule for Friday, with games including Columbia at Harvard, Brown at Princeton, Yale at Pennsylvania, and Cornell at Dartmouth. As well, the top two teams in the MAAC will hit the floor at the Gallagher Center when Siena tips off with Niagara. Siena beat Northern Iowa last game, and Niagara is coming off a win over Illinois State.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

The Flames and Wild will meet in Calgary on Friday night in a battle of Northwest Division clubs. The Wild fell 2-1 in a shootout to the Kings in their last game on Tuesday, with Antti Miettinen scoring the team's lone goal. Niklas Backstrom stopped 24 of 25 Los Angeles shots in regulation time. The Flames are coming off a 4-1 win over Columbus on Tuesday, with Jarome Iginla scoring two goals.

There are four other games on the National Hockey League schedule for Friday night, including Montreal on the road in Philadelphia. The Canadiens got 34 saves from Jaroslav Halak in their 3-0 shutout of the Canucks on Tuesday night. Los Angeles will play in Detroit on Friday night, while Pittsburgh will travel to Chicago to meet the Blackhawks, and Vancouver will get a visit from Tampa Bay.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

Tiger Woods' return to the course won't be as triumphant as he would've liked - the top seed fell 4&2 to Tim Clark in the second round of the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship on Thursday afternoon. Also getting knocked out on Thursday were Anthony Kim, Steve Stricker, and another top seed, Vijay Singh.

The top third-round matchup on the schedule for Friday will have Phil Mickelson taking on Stewart Cink; Mickelson beat Zach Johnson 1-Up on Thursday, while Cink got past Lee Westwood in 23 holes. Ernie Els was victorious in his pairing with Stricker, and he'll move on to play Luke Donald in a third-round matchup on Friday. Also, Geoff Ogilvy will try to advance again by taking out Camilo Villegas.

        Tips and Trends
        -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Detroit Pistons at Orlando Magic [ESPN | 7 PM ET]

Pistons: Detroit will try to avoid losing nine straight games for the first time in nearly 15 years when they visit the Magic. About the only thing positive for the Pistons right now is that forward Rasheed Wallace will apparently not be suspended after picking up his 15th and 16th technicals of the season on Wednesday in a 90-87 loss at New Orleans. “I tried to get him out before he got it,” Detroit head coach Michael Curry said. “He’s an emotional guy. We got unraveled a little bit.” However, two of Wallace's earlier technicals were rescinded by the NBA, so he will get to play against Orlando.

Pistons are 1-8 ATS in their last 9 Friday games.
The UNDER is 15-6 in Detroit's last 21 road games.

Key Injuries - G Allen Iverson (back) is questionable.

        PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Magic (NA): While the Pistons have fallen on hard times lately, Orlando has emerged and taken their place as one of the league's elite teams. Still, the Magic have dropped seven of the last nine regular-season meetings and eight of the last nine playoff games between the teams. Detroit won the only meeting this season back on December 29th, as Allen Iverson and Rodney Stuckey combined for 34 points. It's possible that both Iverson (back) and Stuckey (5.4 points per game in the last five) could be out of the starting lineup for this game.

Magic are 11-5 ATS in their last 16 home games.
The OVER is 5-1 in Orlando's last 6 games overall.

Key Injuries - G Mickael Pietrus (wrist) is questionable.
PG Jameer Nelson (shoulder) is OUT.

        PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Cleveland Cavaliers at San Antonio Spurs [ESPN | 9:30 PM ET]

        Cavs:

Cavs are 9-1 ATS in their last 10 Friday games.
The UNDER is 6-2 in the last 8 meetings.

Key Injuries - G Delonte West (wrist) is probable.
F Sasha Pavlovic (ankle) is OUT.

        PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

        Spurs (NA):

Spurs are 4-0 SU & ATS in their last 4 games overall.
The UNDER is 8-1 in San Antonio's last 9 games vs. Central Division.

Key Injuries - F Fabricio Oberto (thumb) is probable.
F Tim Duncan (quad) is questionable.
G Manu Ginobili (ankle) is OUT.

        PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Pick ‘n’ Roll: NBA best bets
          -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oklahoma City Thunder at Dallas Mavericks (-10, 212)

It seems everyone has a plan to get Dirk's “diggler” back.

The Mavericks' versatile 7-footer is marred in a shooting slump. He's gone 21-of-56 from the floor and has scored a total of just 49 points in the past four games.

Some skeptics say defenses are collapsing on Nowitzki now that Jason Terry is done until April. Others believe the Dallas offense isn't offering him the looks he likes. What ever the problem is, it's not as big as the one Nowitzki has on defense.

He made Milwaukee's Charlie Villanueva look like Dwight Howard in Dallas' win over the Bucks Wednesday. And watched Spurs forwards Matt Boner and Kurt Thomas combine for 21 points and 19 rebounds in a loss to San Antonio Tuesday.

Now, Nowitzki has to match up with a lean and mean Kevin Durant, who is the best player in the league since the All-Star break. On top of overshadowing the All-Star Game with his performance in the rookie-sophomore contest and having his college number retired in Austin, Durant is averaging over 36 points since the layoff.

          Pick: Oklahoma City

Miami Heat at Atlanta Hawks (N/A)

          Welcome home Atlanta Hawks.

The cozy surrounding of Philips Arena have never looked so good after a horrific six-game road trip. The Hawks lost every game save the opener in Detroit, going 2-4 against the spread. They allowed four of those six opponents to crack the century mark.

Atlanta was without Josh Smith, who was home dealing with family issues, and Mike Bibby, who was sick with the flu, for the final game in Denver.

Smith is ready to roll Friday after avoiding suspension for a flagrant foul against the Jazz. Bibby on the other hand is still under the weather but a couple nights in his own bed and some home cooking should have the point guard feeling better.

Atlanta averages more than 100 points per home game and will benefit from the friendly rims. Miami's offense is rolling thanks to Dwyane Wade's MVP-caliber contributions. He's averaging almost 36 points in his last four games, leading the Heat to go 3-0-1 over/under in those contests.

          Pick: Over

                  -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Kings at Detroit Red Wings (-300, 6)

As long as the Red Wings don’t play down to their opposition, this should be an easy cruise for the Wings.

Detroit is coming off a convincing 4-1 triumph over the league-leading San Jose Sharks. Ty Conklin got the call against the Sharks and picked up his 22nd win of the season.

"We're playing real well, with confidence, and maybe that's something we didn't have early in the year," Conklin told reporters. "I want the guys to feel comfortable around me."

The Kings were shut out by the Flyers 2-0 Wednesday night and left the game feeling like they deserved better.

“We had our looks, we had our opportunities, but Marty was really good here," Kings coach Terry Murray told the media. "It was a demanding game, and I was proud of our guys because we're such a young team. We have to find a way."

The Red Wings power play has been a force lately. The Wings have 11 power-play goals in their last five contests. The only hope the Kings have is if Chris Osgood gets the start for the Wings.

                  Pick: Detroit (Puckline -1.5)

Pittsburgh Penguins at Chicago Blackhawks (N/A)

At the beginning of the season the Penguins and Hawks were a pair of teams that you would expect to score goals in bunches. The Hawks started the season as an over play but have developed into a solid under choice over the last couple of months.

The Penguins continue to play inconsistently, mostly due to a lack of skill beyond Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby. The Penguins picked up a tight 1-0 win over the Islanders Wednesday.

"Hopefully, we can carry the way we played from tonight's game to the road games," said right winger Petr Sykora, who scored the only goal of the game.

The Hawks will be attempting to refocus after a third-period implosion against the Nashville Predators. They gave up four goals in the third on the way to a 5-3 loss to the Preds. The loss to Nashville ended a stretch of 12 of 14 games on the road. Coach Joel Quenneville gave the team Wednesday off before returning to practice Thursday.

"It's going to feel good to get home for more than a day," Hawks defenseman Cam Barker told reporters. "The guys had such a good road trip. It was huge for our season. It was a massive road trip and we played extremely well.”

Malkin, Kane, Havlat, Toews and Crosby (if he plays) all have the ability to explode offensively but with Huet and Fleury both playing well, bettors should prefer the under.

                  Pick: Under
