        Ice Picks: NHL best bets
        -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Islanders at Pittsburgh Penguins (-280, 6)

Pittsburgh, trying to get back into playoff position, can't afford to have Sidney Crosby miss any time. Perhaps a matchup with the New York Islanders can entice the Penguins star to play through any groin pain.

Hoping Crosby's injury is only minor, the Penguins look to continue their success against the Islanders at Mellon Arena on Wednesday night.

Crosby left practice early Tuesday due to a sore groin, but is listed as probable for this game. He left a few minutes into the session, apparently only for precautionary reasons.

"Just aches and pains and concern in the groin area," interim head coach Dan Bylsma told the Penguins' official Web site. "He warmed it up and went on the ice. It wasn't as good as it was (Monday). We thought it would be better to continue to get some rest and get ready for (Wednesday)."

The Penguins (29-26-6) are in 10th place in the Eastern Conference after reaching the Stanley Cup finals last season, and need Crosby on the ice if they hope to reach the playoffs for the third straight year. Crosby is among the league leaders in scoring with 79 points (23 goals, 56 assists).

The Penguins got three assists from Crosby in a 9-2 win over the Islanders on Dec. 11. It was Pittsburgh's first nine-goal game since beating Philadelphia 9-4 on Feb. 7, 2001.

Petr Sykora and Pascal Dupuis both had a hat trick for the Penguins, who are 3-0-1 against the Islanders this season. Sykora ended the longest streak in NHL history without a hat trick by a player who had at least two goals in a game.

Previously, Sykora had 38 games with two goals without getting a third. He added an assist in his big game against the Islanders, but has been held off the scoresheet in his three other matchups with them this season.

New York has stuck with Scott Gordon even though it has the league's worst record. The Islanders have lost five straight on the road, scoring six goals in that span.

But New York is coming off an impressive win, beating New Jersey 4-0 on Saturday night after losing its previous two.

The Islanders gave up 23 goals in their previous six games, going 1-4-1.

        Pick: Under

San Jose Sharks at Detroit Red Wings (-140, 6)

The Red Wings (39-13-8) trail the Sharks (41-8-9) by five points but have played two more games than San Jose. They have also lost two of the past three meetings with the Sharks and cooled off since a six-game win streak, going 2-2-1 in the last five, including a 5-2 loss Saturday night in Minnesota.

With Chris Osgood on a 10-day "mental breather" that ends Friday, the Wings will try for better luck with Ty Conklin, who beat the Sharks 6-0 at home Dec. 18 and has won all five of his starts this month.

Detroit will be looking for a better offensive showing, and odds are it could bounce back. Since their season-high five-game skid to end January, the Wings have scored 48 times during an 8-2-1 stretch.

They lead the league with 222 goals, including an NHL-best 74 on the power play. Detroit was 9-for-17 with the man advantage in three games before losing to the Wild.

The Wings will try to continue their success against Sharks star goaltender Evgeni Nabokov. Despite winning two of three meetings this season, Nabokov has given up 11 goals in the last two and is 7-14-1 with a 3.66 goals-against average in his career versus Detroit.

Nabokov has helped San Jose win four straight and recorded his fifth shutout of the season in Monday night's 1-0 overtime victory in Dallas - the start of a four-game trip.

"He was the first, second and third star in my opinion," coach Todd McLellan said. "He allowed us to escape with the point. I'm happy for Nabby."

        Pick: Wings

Atlanta Hawks at Denver Nuggets [9 PM ET]

Hawks: Atlanta wraps up a six-game road trip in Denver after going 2-3 in the first five games. The Hawks have been outrebounded by an average of 11 per game in their last four and will not have not face Nuggets center Nene, who is averaging a team-best 7.9 rebounds per game. Nene is out with a bruised knee, something Atlanta will need to take advantage of in order to finish the trip on a high note. Hawks forward Josh Smith got his only career triple-double in the team's last trip to the Pepsi Center, totaling 22 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists in a 107-100 loss last January 23rd. Atlanta has lost three of the last four meetings there.

Hawks are 6-2 ATS in the last 8 meetings at Denver.
The UNDER is 3-1 in Atlanta's last 4 games overall.

                      Key Injuries - NONE

                      PROJECTED SCORE: 98

Nuggets (-8.5, O/U 205): Denver will look to avoid its first four-game losing streak in more than two years and bounce back from its worst home loss in over 11 years. The Nuggets got crushed at the Pepsi Center 114-76 by the defending NBA champion Celtics on Monday even though they were playing without All-Star Kevin Garnett. In Denver's defense, the team was playing its first home game in almost three weeks. “(The Celtics) came in and made shots and played well. We can make a lot of excuses about being fatigued, been on the road a long time, (playing) back to back, just getting home,” Nuggets star Carmelo Anthony said. “There are a lot of things that can play into it. But we lost tonight. We’ll take it on our chin and get ready for Wednesday.”

Nuggets are 0-3 SU & ATS in their last 3 games overall.
The UNDER is 5-2 in Denver's last 7 games overall.

Key Injuries - C Nene Hilario (knee) is doubtful.

                      PROJECTED SCORE: 107
