    Daily Sports Roundup

    Monday, February 23

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Celtics continue life without KG, the Sooners take on the Jayhawks, and the Sharks try to take a bite out of the Stars.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The Celtics begin their first full week without the services of star forward Kevin Garnett on Monday night when they play on the road against the Nuggets. Garnett is expected to miss up to three weeks of action as he heals from the strained knee he suffered last week. The Celtics and Nuggets last met back on November 14, when Denver pulled out a 94-85 road victory. Chauncey Billups had 18 points in that win for the Nuggets, while Ray Allen tossed in 26 for Boston.

The other top matchup on Monday night has Atlanta on the road in Utah, with the Hawks looking to bounce back from a 108-98 loss to the Blazers on Friday. The Jazz beat the Hornets 102-88 last time out. There are four other games on the NBA's Monday schedule, including Philadelphia at New Jersey, Indiana at New York, and Golden State at the Clippers, while the Hornets will play in Sacramento.

    The march toward Madness . . .

The Sooners will try to rebound from a loss to rival Texas when they play host to Kansas on Monday night in a battle of ranked college hoops teams. Oklahoma dropped a 73-68 decision to Texas on Saturday night, with Willie Warren pouring in 27 points for the Sooners in a losing cause. That put Oklahoma at 25-2 straight-up and 13-9 against-the-spread on the season, while Kansas is at 22-5 SU and 15-6-1 ATS after beating Nebraska 70-53 in their meeting on Saturday.

The only other ranked team in action on Monday is Louisville, which will be taking on Georgetown at the Verizon Center. The Cardinals went to 21-5 SU and 16-10 ATS on the season with a 72-63 win over Cincinnati on Saturday; Terrence Williams poured in 20 points. The Hoyas sit at 14-11 SU and just 8-12-1 ATS heading into Monday's game; they were beaten 78-72 by Marquette on Saturday.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

There is just one game on the National Hockey League's schedule for Monday night, with the Sharks in Dallas to take on the Stars. San Jose rolled to a 3-1 win over the Thrashers on Saturday afternoon, scoring three times in the third period to secure the victory. Evgeni Nabokov stopped 22 of 23 Atlanta shots. The Stars are coming off a 3-1 loss to the Blackhawks on Saturday, with Steve Ott providing the lone Dallas goal in the game. Marty Turco was good for 36 saves.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

Anyone who picked up Tiger Woods at 2/1 odds on the Vegas futures list to win The Masters this season will be watching his performance closely this week. The world's top golfer has announced that he'll finally return to action at the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship tournament at Ritz-Carlton Golf Club in Arizona this week. That event gets underway on Wednesday, and Woods is the defending champ - he beat Stewart Cink 8 & 7 in the 2008 championship match.

Pick ‘n’ Roll: NBA best bets
            -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Atlanta Hawks at Utah Jazz (-7, 206)

In their last game at EnergySolutions Arena before team owner Larry H. Miller is laid to rest, the Utah Jazz want nothing more than to end their homestand with a 5-0 mark.

With 14 consecutive home wins against Atlanta, Utah has a good chance at making that happen Monday night against the Hawks.

The Jazz (33-23) won their fourth straight Saturday, defeating New Orleans 102-88 in their first game since the 64-year-old Miller died Friday due to complications with diabetes.

"It's great to win on a night like this. We wanted to win for Larry and the whole Miller family," Deron Williams said. "They're going through a tough time and hopefully this can ease their pain just a little bit for one night."

Since losing four in a row from Jan. 21-27, Utah is 8-2, raising its record to 10 games above .500 for the first time in 2008-09. A victory Monday would match the Jazz's longest winning streak of the season. They won five straight to open the season before dropping four of five.

Williams has been a major reason for this recent surge, averaging 27.4 points, 10.2 assists and shooting 55.3 percent from the field in his last nine games.

The Hawks' last victory in Utah was 121-112 on Feb. 13, 1993.

Atlanta arrives at EnergySolutions Arena following Friday's 108-98 loss to Portland. The Hawks (32-23) fell to 2-2 on their six-game stretch away from Philips Arena.

Mike Bibby hit 10-of-14 shots and had a team-high 27 points against the Trail Blazers. He is shooting 60.6 percent from the field and averaging 28.0 points in his last two games.

            Pick: Over

New Orleans Hornets at Sacramento Kings (+7.5, 203)

The New Orleans Hornets haven't seen Tyson Chandler on the court in more than a month, and his days wearing teal and gold appeared to be over when he was traded last week.

After an eventful six days, however, the 7-foot center is back as a welcome addition to the Hornets' roster.

Following an odd scenario in which Chandler was traded before the deal was voided, he's expected to return from an ankle injury and play for the first time since mid-January when New Orleans visits the Sacramento Kings on Monday night.

Several Hornets were upset about the trade of Chandler to Oklahoma City on Tuesday over apparent salary-cap considerations, as he's due to make $12 million next season. All-Star forward David West was especially critical of the deal, saying it "leaves a big question mark in the middle" for the Hornets (32-22).

However, Chandler, who's been out since Jan. 19 with a sprained right ankle, failed his physical and the Thunder backed out of the trade Wednesday night. Oklahoma City's decision was reportedly due to a toe injury Chandler suffered two years ago.

New Orleans' players, meanwhile, are just glad their center isn't going anywhere. Chandler rejoined the team Friday and is expected to be ready to play Monday.

New Orleans will be trying to avoid a third straight loss when it visits Sacramento. After falling 115-111 in overtime to the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday, the Hornets lost 102-88 at Utah the next night.

They've dropped five of six on the road.

Sacramento (12-45) certainly won't be heading to the postseason, and the front office made a flurry of trades prior to last week's deadline designed to remake the team with the league's worst record.

Four of the seven new Kings were in uniform Saturday in Dallas, most notably the defensive-minded Andres Nocioni. His presence, though, didn't help his team improve its poor play on the defensive end, as Sacramento gave up 70 first-half points en route to a 116-95 loss.

            Pick: New Orleans

#7 Louisville at Georgetown [ESPN | 7 PM ET]

Louisville (-1, O/U 130): The Cardinals are still in the mix for the top seed in the Big East tournament thanks to three straight wins following a home loss to #1 UConn. The Huskies have since lost to Pittsburgh, creating a logjam with four teams each losing twice in conference play. Louisville has won its last three against DePaul, Providence and Cincinnati by an average of 24 points. The closest of those games came on Saturday when the Cards beat the Bearcats, 72-63. “I think our passing has gotten better,” Louisville head coach Rick Pitino said. “We made some excellent passes. We executed great against their full-court pressure. We just played a terrific game.”

Louisville is 23-7-1 ATS in its last 31 road games.
The UNDER is 7-1 in Louisville's last 8 Monday games.

Key Injuries - G Reginald Delk (ankle) is questionable.

                  PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Georgetown: This is a must-win for the Hoyas, who still have hopes of getting into the NCAA tournament with a strong finish. The problem is, they just can't seem to get over the hump. Georgetown had come through with a 65-40 rout of South Florida to seemingly end a skid of seven losses in eight games. But Marquette completed a season series sweep of the Hoyas on Saturday with a 78-72 road win. “We’ll get through this," Georgetown head coach John Thompson III said. "Yeah, it’s trying. But we’re going to do what we do. We’re going to try to get better from the top on down.”

Georgetown is 1-8 ATS in its last 9 games overall.
The UNDER is 10-1 in Georgetown's last 11 Monday games.

                  Key Injuries - NONE

                  PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

#18 Kansas at #2 Oklahoma [ESPN | 9 PM ET]

Kansas (NA): The Jayhawks could very well be the hottest team in the Big 12, winning 10 of their last 11 games. Their only loss during that stretch was came on the road to a Missouri team that has also won 10 of 11. The defending national champs could have a big advantage if Oklahoma's Blake Griffin doesn't play since center Cole Aldrich is averaging 20.3 points in the last three games. “It helps to have an inside presence, and we have one of the best inside presences in the country,” Kansas guard Sherron Collins said. “He’s good. We’ve got to feed him. Early in the season, we weren’t feeding him enough. When we do, that takes pressure off all of us.”

Kansas is 14-3-1 ATS in its last 18 games vs. big 12.
The UNDER is 7-1 in Kansas' last 8 games overall.

                  Key Injuries - NONE

                  PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Oklahoma: The status of All-American Blake Griffin probably will not be known until near tip-off, and the Sooners are not going to risk his future right now after he suffered a concussion in the first half of a 73-68 loss at Texas on Saturday. “The most important thing is him and his future. You don’t want to do anything to risk any further damage, so that’s the most important thing,” Capel said before practice Sunday. “We’re going to proceed with caution with this and make sure he’s OK. And we’ll move on whichever way we have to, with him or without.”

Oklahoma is 0-4 SU in the last 4 meetings.
The OVER is 10-1 in Oklahoma's last 11 home games.

Key Injuries - F Blake Griffin (concussion) is questionable.

                  PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Louisville Cardinals at Georgetown Hoyas (+1.5)

Louisville and Georgetown met on the last day of the 2007-08 regular season with first place on the line heading into the Big East tournament.

As this season winds down, the seventh-ranked Cardinals are again fighting for the conference's top spot - while the Hoyas are simply battling for their postseason lives.

One of four teams in contention for the No. 1 seed in the Big East, Louisville goes for its fourth win in a row Monday night when it visits Georgetown, which can ill afford another loss if it hopes to earn a fourth consecutive NCAA tournament berth.

The Cardinals (21-5, 12-2) and Hoyas last met March 8 at the Verizon Center, with Georgetown winning 55-52 in a defensive struggle to claim the Big East regular-season title.

Louisville is once again in position to clinch the conference crown while remaining a fixture in the top 10 of the AP poll, but the Hoyas (14-11, 5-9), ranked ninth on Jan. 12, now can't even crack the top 10 in their own league. They've lost eight of 10, most recently falling 78-72 at home to No. 10 Marquette on Saturday that prompted John Thompson III to refer to this as his toughest season as a head coach.

"Period. Not just at Georgetown," Thompson said. "But we'll get through this. Yeah, it's trying. But we're going to do what we do. We're going to try to get better from the top on down."

The Cardinals haven't faced nearly the same level of adversity as Thompson's team, but lost two of their first three games in February in lopsided fashion. The first was a 17-point home defeat to then-No. 1 Connecticut, followed by a stunning 33-point loss at Notre Dame that led coach Rick Pitino to confiscate his players' practice gear with team logos.

Louisville responded with home wins over DePaul and Providence by a combined 63 points before heading to Cincinnati on Saturday. Despite the two preceding blowout victories, Pitino was more impressed with the Cardinals' 72-63 win over the Bearcats behind Terrence Williams' 20 points, eight rebounds and five assists.

                    Pick: Louisville

San Jose Sharks at Dallas Stars (+145, 5.5)

These two clubs have met three times this season with the Sharks winning all three. Two of the three contests finished under the total of 5.5.

After struggling through their worst slump of the season (losing six of seven games), the Sharks have turned things around lately by winning three in a row. This is the beginning of a four-game road trip for San Jose and after winning just one of five on its trip away from the Shark Tank, the team knows it has to be better.

“We have to find a way to win on the road,” said Jeremy Roenick. “We have to start better on the road and can’t lay goose eggs in the first period.”

The Dallas Stars are coming off a 3-1 home loss to the Chicago Blackhawks. After picking things up in January, Dallas has struggled with inconsistency in February.

"We've probably been thinking too much," said Stars goaltender Marty Turco. "Our rhythm seems to be off. We're giving up more chances than normal. We're giving up a lot of shots, and odd-man stuff that we normally we don't."

Dallas bench boss Dave Tippett is looking for a more complete effort.

"We have little room for error, and if we have five or six players not pulling their weight, that's a problem," Tippett told the Dallas News.

If there were more options on Monday this is probably a game we would have stayed away from. The Sharks have covered the puckline in both of the last two contests. The Stars have only scored four goals in three games against the Sharks this year and this time they don’t have Brad Richards who is out until mid April.

                          Pick: Under
