    Daily Sports Roundup

    Sunday, February 22

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: Matt Kenseth guns for another Sprint Cup win, the Celtics take on the Suns, and Duke gets set to clash with Wake Forest.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The Celtics will be trying to bounce back from a Thursday night loss to Utah when they go to Phoenix to take on the Suns on Sunday afternoon. Boston managed to score only 85 points in their 90-85 loss to the Jazz on Thursday, thanks in large part to Kevin Garnett leaving the game with a knee injury. The Celtics and Suns last played on January 19, with Boston rolling to a 104-87 win. Suns forward Amare Stoudemire won't be on the floor on Sunday; he had surgery to repair a detached retina on Friday and will miss the next eight weeks.

A busy Sunday around the NBA has eight other games on the schedule, including Detroit at Cleveland to cap the day at 8:00pm ET. As well, it'll be Chicago at Indiana, New York at Toronto, Charlotte at Houston, Denver at Milwaukee, Miami at Orlando, the Clippers at Portland, and the Lakers at Minnesota. Kobe Bryant and company topped the T-Wolves 132-119 last month.

    The march toward Madness . . .

There are two ranked matchups on the college hoops schedule for Sunday, with No. 12 Villanova at No. 24 Syracuse, and No. 8 Wake Forest at No. 9 Duke. The Blue Devils snapped a two-game losing streak last time out against St. John's, getting 19 points from Gerald Henderson in their 76-69 road victory. The Demon Deacons topped the Blue Devils 70-68 when the teams clashed back in January.

No. 6 Michigan State will host Wisconsin on Sunday afternoon, while No. 13 Clemson is at Georgia Tech, No. 14 Arizona State gets a visit from rival Arizona, George Washington is at No. 16 Xavier, and No. 18 Illinois heads to the Value City Arena to play Ohio State. The Illini fell 38-33 to Penn State on Wednesday.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

The Penguins play their second consecutive afternoon contest on Sunday when they travel to Washington to take on the Capitals. Those two teams last met on January 14, when Washington came away with a 6-3 road victory. Alexander Ovechkin scored twice for the Caps in that win, while Jose Theodore stopped 26 of 29 Pittsburgh shots. Marc-Andre Fleury had 36 stops in the loss for the Pens.

There are four other games on the NHL's slate for Sunday, including Colorado at Carolina at 3:00pm ET. Boston will then be in Tampa Bay to play the Lightning, with Chicago hosting Minnesota, and the Rangers getting a visit from Toronto.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

The Sprint Cup Series will be in Fontana on Sunday for the Auto Club 500 at Auto Club Speedway. Carl Edwards is the defending Auto Club 500 champion, and Jimmie Johnson is the 5/1 Vegas favorite to get the victory on Sunday, but Matt Kenseth is the driver on a roll - he won the rain-shortened Daytona 500 last weekend. Kenseth is pegged at 8/1 odds to visit victory lane at the Fontana track.

Kyle Busch and Edwards are both sitting at 6/1 odds on the Vegas list for Sunday, with Jeff Gordon at 7/1, Dale Earnhardt Jr. at 10/1, and both Greg Biffle and Tony Stewart at 12/1. Stewart was one of the few big names to have a respectable finish at Daytona last week; he ended up in eighth place in the race.

        Tips and Trends
        -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Celtics at Phoenix Suns [ABC | 2:30 PM ET]

Celtics: Boston's defense will be tested without All-Star Kevin Garnett, who will miss 2-3 weeks with a strained muscle behind his right knee. Garnett's absence should make it easier for the Suns to run-and-gun, as the Celtics will be hard-pressed to stay on course with their season average of just 92 points allowed per game. However, if this turns out to be a game decided by guards, Boston still might have an advantage. The Celtics are a perfect 9-0 this season when point guard Rajon Rondo scores 18 points or more.

Celtics are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 road games.
The UNDER is 3-0 in Boston's last 3 games overall.

Key Injuries - F Kevin Garnett (knee) is OUT.

        PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Suns (-2, O/U 225): Phoenix has scored 140 points or more in all three games played since the All-Star break, thanks in part to interim head coach Alvin Gentry. The Suns did not miss Amare Stoudemire in a 140-118 win over Oklahoma City on Friday, but they certainly could use him against the Celtics. Stoudemire is expected to miss the rest of the season with a detached retina, and this meeting with Boston could be played to a much different tempo. “I can promise you we are not going to get 140 Sunday, not against Boston,” said Gentry.

Suns are 3-0 ATS in their last 3 games overall.
The OVER is 4-0 in Phoenix's last 4 games overall.

Key Injuries - F Amare Stoudemire (eye) is OUT.
F Grant Hill (foot) is questionable.

        PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Miami Heat at Orlando Magic [ESPN | 5:30 PM ET]

Heat: Miami could be a dangerous team in the second half of the season if newly acquired big man Jermaine O'Neal plays up to his potential. O'Neal improved in his second game with the Heat on Saturday, totaling 17 points and 10 rebounds in a 97-91 win over Philadelphia after scoring 13 in his debut on Wednesday. “I felt so much more comfortable tonight than I felt the previous night,” O’Neal said. “I’ve been working hard and we feel like we have a chance to keep building from here.”

Heat are 2-8-1 ATS in the last 11 meetings.
The UNDER is 7-3 in Miami's last 10 games vs. Southeast Division.

        Key Injuries - NONE

        PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Magic (NA): Rafer Alston's first game with Orlando shouldn't be judged on how many points he scored, as the veteran point guard contributed in several other ways during a 92-80 win at Charlotte on Friday. Alston was dealt to the Magic at the trade deadline as a replacement for the injured Jameer Nelson and scored only three points on 1-of-9 shooting. But he did dish out eight assists with just one turnover while totaling three steals. “Everywhere I looked, I had a weapon to pass it to,” Alston said. “I think point guards in this league would love to be in that situation. Everywhere you turn, you’ve got a guy who can flat-out shoot it or can drive it and finish.”

Magic are 24-10 ATS in their last 34 games overall.
The UNDER is 12-5 in Orlando's last 17 home games.

Key Injuries - G Jameer Nelson (shoulder) is OUT.
F Rashard Lewis (head) is probable.
G Mickael Pietrus (wrist) is questionable.

        PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Detroit Pistons at Cleveland Cavaliers [ESPN | 8 PM ET]

Pistons: Detroit will look to avoid losing six straight for the first time in more than five years following an 83-79 setback at home on Thursday. “We lost again,” Pistons guard Rodney Stuckey said. “I don’t know. I really can’t explain anything anymore. We just keep losing, and now we’ve got some great teams to play.” The Pistons are just 2-10 at The Palace of Auburn Hills since January 13th but have surprisingly won four of the last five regular-season meetings at Cleveland's Quicken Loans Arena.

Pistons are 1-11 ATS in their last 12 Sunday games.
The UNDER is 12-3 in Detroit's last 15 Sunday games.

        Key Injuries - NONE

        PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Cavs (-9, O/U 179.5): Cleveland star LeBron James is coming off another unreal performance on Friday in a 111-103 win at Milwaukee, making insiders wonder what he will do for an encore. James totaled 55 points and also dished out nine assists, hitting a career-best eight 3-pointers in the process. He scored 24 points in the third quarter alone, including 16 in a stretch of less than three minutes. “Just got in the zone, man,” James said. “I saw a few go down, so I just kept going at it, man. Every shot that I made tonight, every shot that we all made tonight, we needed.”

Cavs are 22-6 ATS in their last 28 home games.
The UNDER is 7-1 in Cleveland's last 8 games vs. Eastern Conference.

Key Injuries - G Delonte West (wrist) is day-to-day.
F Sasha Pavlovic (ankle) is OUT.

        PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Wisconsin at #5 Michigan State [ESPN | 3 PM ET]

Wisconsin: The Badgers are playing great defense again, which is the main reason they have won five in a row following a six-game losing streak. They had surrendered 68.3 points per game on 50 percent shooting during their skid but have allowed an average of just 49.4 points on less than 42 percent shooting during their winning streak. Wisconsin has lost the last three meetings at Michigan State but won the last game between the teams last March 15 in Madison, 65-63.

Wisconsin is 14-6-1 ATS in its last 21 road games.
The UNDER is 4-1 in Wisconsin's last 5 games overall.

              Key Injuries - NONE

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Michigan State (-8.5, O/U 126): The Spartans will try to bounce back from a terrible performance in a 72-54 loss at Purdue on Tuesday. They shot a season-low 32.7 percent from the field and tied a season high with 22 turnovers. “I don’t feel good about a performance like this in a big-time game,” Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo said. "I was elated (at halftime) because we did not play well. Then, in the second half, I guess that was a meltdown on our part. Purdue created some turnovers, but some of that other stuff like dribbling it off our foot was borderline ridiculous.”

Home team is 7-2 ATS in the last 9 meetings.
The UNDER is 8-3 in Michigan State's last 11 home games.

Key Injuries - F Raymar Morgan (mononucleosis) has returned.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Los Angeles Lakers at Minnesota Timberwolves (+10, 215.5)

Los Angeles (45-10), winners of 14 of 16, open a two-game trip following Friday's 115-111 overtime victory over New Orleans. Kobe Bryant scored 39 points - 11 in the extra five minutes - as the Lakers improved to 8-1 since Andrew Bynum tore the MCL in his right knee in a 115-98 win over Memphis on Jan. 31.

Bynum could miss up to 12 weeks. Since Bynum's injury, Bryant - averaging 27.6 points this season - is scoring 32.4 points per game.

If the Timberwolves didn't realize how valuable Al Jefferson was to their success, they do now. Minnesota (18-36) has lost five straight at home for its longest such skid since dropping nine in a row at the Target Center from Nov. 21-Dec. 27.

Minnesota is 1-3 since Jefferson tore the ACL in his right knee in a 101-97 loss at New Orleans on Feb. 8. He was leading the Timberwolves with averages of 23.1 points and 11.0 rebounds.

"We ain't going to be able to find our way without Al," guard Randy Foye said. "We played 50 games with him."

Minnesota has no choice, though, as Jefferson is out for the season. He had surgery on Wednesday in New York to repair the ligament.

Inserted into the lineup following Bynum's injury, Lamar Odom is playing his best basketball of the season, averaging 16.3 points and 13.8 boards during the last nine games. He has grabbed 17 or more rebounds in five of his last six games.

Odom had his last triple-double in Minnesota, posting 10 points, 16 rebounds and 10 assists in the Lakers' 117-92 win on Feb. 13, 2008.

The Wolves could use some consistency from Foye, who scored a career-high 36 points in Minnesota's fifth straight home loss, 112-105 to Indiana on Friday night. The point guard, however, committed five of the team's 19 turnovers.

"Guy's got to have a catcher's mitt to pick up the ball," said Wolves coach Kevin McHale, whose team has lost nine of 11.

Minnesota can't afford too many mistakes against the Lakers, who scored a season-high 132 points in the teams' last meeting - the last game they finished with a healthy Bynum.

Los Angeles is averaging 113.9 points while winning 10 of 11. The Wolves, meanwhile, are ranked in the bottom third in the league, allowing 102.8 points per game.

                    Pick: Over

Detroit Pistons at Cleveland Cavaliers (-9, 179.5)

LeBron James will look to deliver an encore to his 55-point effort Sunday night when the Cavaliers host the sputtering Detroit Pistons, who are trying to avoid their first six-game losing streak in more than five years.

General manager Danny Ferry decided to stand pat at Thursday's trade deadline, figuring Cleveland (42-11) would be in good shape to earn the Eastern Conference's top seed with its current roster.

The Cavaliers played their first game after the All-Star break without power forward Ben Wallace, who had a lacerated arm, and Delonte West, who had been out since Jan. 15 with a fractured wrist.

Wallace returned Friday and West is due back soon - though he'll likely miss Sunday's game - but all Cleveland mostly needed in Milwaukee was James. The NBA's leading scorer had a season-high 55, hitting 8 of 11 3-pointers and adding nine assists, as the Cavaliers beat the Bucks 111-103.

"Just got in the zone, man," James said after finishing a point shy of his career high. "I saw a few go down, so I just kept going at it, man. Every shot that I made tonight, every shot that we all made tonight, we needed."

James' biggest help offensively all season has been point guard Mo Williams, and Williams has been an excellent second option during the Cavaliers' current three-game winning streak. Williams has averaged 28.0 points on 61.1 percent shooting.

Williams had 25 points in Cleveland's first meeting with the Pistons, a 96-89 loss in Detroit on Nov. 19.

It looked like the Pistons (28-27) would get the best of the Cavaliers at The Palace again on Feb. 1 as they led by eight after three quarters. But with James on the bench to start the fourth, Williams sparked a 15-2 run and Cleveland eventually cruised to a 90-80 win.

James had 33 and Williams 22.

Detroit won consecutive games after that loss, but has lost its last five. Allen Iverson's 31 points couldn't help it top San Antonio in an 83-79 loss on Thursday.

The Pistons dropped to 2-10 at home since Jan. 13, and face a road trip that includes games at Boston, New Orleans and Orlando after Sunday's visit to Cleveland.

"We lost again," guard Rodney Stuckey said. "I don't know. I really can't explain anything anymore. We just keep losing, and now we've got some great teams to play."

Detroit hasn't lost six straight since Feb. 3-17, 2004.

Coach Michael Curry has moved Richard Hamilton to the bench while Stuckey starts, and the second-year guard's play has hampered Detroit during its losing streak. Stuckey has averaged 8.2 points during the five-game skid, and has totaled five points in his last two games.

                    Pick: Pistons

Villanova Wildcats at Syracuse Orange (-2.5)

While a win against Villanova would give Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim the most 20-win seasons in Division I history, he is probably more concerned with getting his team to bounce back from a frustrating stretch before the end of the regular season.

Boeheim seeks his 791st win Sunday afternoon as the No. 25 Orange host the 12th-ranked Wildcats in a Big East matchup.

Boeheim probably didn't figure it would take this long to reach 20 victories this season, especially after Syracuse (19-7, 7-6) started 16-1. The Orange, though, have lost six of nine since Jan. 14, playing six Top 25 teams during that stretch, including then-No. 17 Villanova on Feb. 7. Syracuse lost that game 102-85, giving up a season high in points.

After a difficult stretch against some of the Big East's elite, Syracuse took advantage of a struggling Georgetown team on Feb. 14. The Orange, however, didn't make it easy, nearly blowing a 16-point second-half lead before prevailing 98-94 in overtime. Jonny Flynn scored 25 points and Eric Devendorf added 23, including eight in overtime.

Syracuse is looking to win two straight for the first time since a seven-game streak Dec. 17-Jan. 10.

The Orange, though, will have to find a way to stop Dante Cunningham, who matched a career high with 31 points against them earlier this month.

Cunningham has averaged just 11.3 points since that win, however, and shot only 29.4 percent (5-of-17) in Villanova's 82-72 win over Rutgers on Thursday.

The Wildcats dropped their previous game, 93-72 to West Virginia on Feb. 13.

The 72 points Villanova gave up were the fewest allowed in five games, even though it allowed Rutgers to shoot 52.1 percent. The Wildcats are holding opponents to 39.9 percent shooting this season - third-lowest in the Big East.

Despite its recent struggles, Syracuse is among the nation's best shooting teams at 48.6 percent.

Syracuse is 14-2 at home this season but has lost two of its last three to Villanova at the Carrier Dome.

                      Pick: Syracuse

Arizona Wildcats at Arizona State Sun Devils (-7.5, 130)

The game pits the two hottest teams in the Pac-10. The Wildcats (18-8, 8-5) have won seven in a row and Arizona State (20-5, 9-4 Pac-10) has won four straight.

Behind forwards Chase Budinger and Jordan Hill and point guard Nic Wise, Arizona has bounced back from a 2-5 conference start to make a strong case for its 25th straight NCAA tournament berth. It's the nation's longest active streak.

Led by guards James Harden and Derek Glasser and forward Jeff Pendergraph, the Sun Devils have all but locked up their first trip to the NCAAs since 2003. Harden leads the conference at 21.3 points per game.

Arizona State is also contending for its first Pac-10 title since joining the conference in the 1978-79 season. The Sun Devils are tied with UCLA for second place, a half-game behind Washington.

After decades of Wildcat dominance, ASU-Arizona finally feels like a rivalry. Change came when Hall of Famer Lute Olson left the Wildcats bench and Herb Sendek arrived on the Sun Devils bench.

Olson went 43-6 against ASU, which went through seven coaches in that span. The Wildcats are 0-3 against their rivals since Olson took a personal leave of absence a year ago. He retired in October.

ASU's breakthrough has come under Sendek, who is 3-2 against the Wildcats since he arrived at ASU. He also beat Arizona in the 1995 NCAA tourney while coaching at Miami (Ohio).

Although ASU has been ranked since the preseason, the Sun Devils opened at No. 15, one rung lower than their present perch, it took time for fans to notice. A crowd of 13,368 showed up at 13,947-seat Wells Fargo Arena to see ASU knock off No. 11 UCLA 74-67 last week, and students rushed the floor when it ended. Another big crowd turned out for the USC game three nights later.

"They helped us out a lot; it was like a sixth man on the court," Harden said. "When we hit stretches where we didn't score or they scored, the crowd got us back into the game, even in the USC game. If we're on a drought and we can't score, they get us a bucket or to the foul line. If we can get that for the last three games in the Pac-10, it's going to be tough to beat us at home."

Sunday night's game against Arizona is sold out, ASU's first sellout this season.

Arizona will be without guard Garland Judkins and forward D.J. Shumpert, who were suspended Friday "for failing to meet team obligations," Pennell said in a statement.

Judkins, a 6-foot-3 freshman from Humble, Texas, is averaging 2.4 points and 12.6 minutes per game. Shumpert, a 6-foot-6 freshman from Tucson, has played in three games this season.

                      Pick: Over

Minnesota Wild at Chicago Blackhawks (-205, 5.5)

Although the Chicago Blackhawks have spent most of the last few weeks away from the United Center, they'll soon be reacquainted with their home ice.

That's where the Blackhawks are set to play eight of their next 10 games, starting Sunday night against the Minnesota Wild, who are beginning their own extensive road stretch.

Chicago (34-15-8) is 15-4-5 at home, and its 24 games there are the fewest for any NHL team. In 12 games since the All-Star break, the surging Blackhawks are 9-3-0 with eight wins coming as visitors.

After beating both Florida teams, Chicago completed the swing with a 3-1 victory over Dallas on Saturday.

But as the Blackhawks look to make it five in a row for the first time since reeling off a franchise-record nine straight from Dec. 7-28, they'll also be trying to end their recent struggles versus the Wild (29-24-4).

The Blackhawks are 3-8-3 against Minnesota since Jan. 20, 2006, going 1-4-1 in Chicago. They fell there 4-1 on Jan. 19 in the teams' most recent matchup after splitting a pair of contests in St. Paul earlier this season.

Minnesota has lost two of three road games since the break and is just 11-13-0 away from home overall. However, the Wild will have plenty of chances to improve on that record, with 15 of their next 19 set on the road.

Minnesota also moved within one point of Anaheim and Edmonton, who are tied for eighth in the Western Conference. Chicago is fourth.

"All of a sudden I like the team because everyone's working and everyone's doing what they were supposed to do, and I know we have a chance when they do this. Now it's a matter of doing it," Minnesota coach Jacques Lemaire said.

Another high-scoring performance from Owen Nolan could help. He had two goals and an assist Saturday to give him nine points in his last six contests.

It will likely be up to Chicago's Cristobal Huet to contain him. He made 30 saves Saturday in his fifth straight start while Nikolai Khabibulin remains sidelined with a lower-body injury.

Huet, 4-1-0 with a 1.41 goals-against average in that span, has won eight of 12 at home and two of his last three versus the Wild.

                        Pick: Under

Toronto Maple Leafs at New York Rangers (-185, 5.5)

After another road loss, the reeling Rangers host the Toronto Maple Leafs on Sunday night, trying to hold onto one of the final playoff spots in the Eastern Conference.

New York (31-23-6) is 2-7-2 since Jan. 28, with both wins coming at MSG, including a 3-1 victory against the league-worst New York Islanders on Wednesday that ended a three-game losing streak.

The Rangers, however, were unable to build on that performance when they went back on the road Saturday, losing 4-2 to Buffalo to fall to 0-7-1 away from home since a 3-2 overtime victory at Chicago on Jan. 16.

New York has been outscored 31-8 during its road slump, raising questions about coach Tom Renney's job security.

Having three of their next four games at home should give Renney's club a bit of a reprieve. The Rangers are 6-2-1 at MSG since Dec. 29, averaging 3.3 goals. That success, though, likely won't quiet fans who have been calling for the firing of Renney and general manager Glen Sather.

Adding to the mounting pressure is the Rangers' once firm grasp on a playoff spot looks much more tenuous now. New York is tied with Florida and Buffalo for sixth in the East with 68 points, three ahead of ninth-place Carolina.

Toronto (21-26-12), meanwhile, has lost three straight (0-1-2) and has one win in its last six games (1-2-3). The Maple Leas are coming off a 3-2 shootout loss to Vancouver on Saturday - the sixth time in 15 games they've played beyond regulation.

Goaltender Vesa Toskala made 35 saves in his first start in a week Saturday. He missed the previous two games after undergoing an MRI on his hip and groin.

                        Pick: Over
