    Daily Sports Roundup

    Saturday, February 21

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: UConn takes on lowly South Florida, the Hornets meet the Jazz in Utah, and the Penguins take to the ice in Philadelphia.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The top NBA matchup on Saturday has New Orleans in Utah to take on the Jazz. Utah is coming off a big 90-85 win over the Celtics on Thursday, with Mehmet Okur picking up 19 points in the victory. The last time the Hornets and Jazz met on the court was back on January 7, with Utah rolling to an easy 116-90 victory.

There is one afternoon game on the NBA slate for Saturday, with Dwyane Wade and the Heat hosting the Sixers at 3:30pm ET. As well, San Antonio will take on the Wizards in Washington, with Sacramento at Dallas, and Oklahoma City at Golden State. The Warriors couldn't hold off the Lakers in a 129-121 loss on Wednesday night; Stephen Jackson led Golden State with 24 points that game.

    The march toward Madness . . .

The top-ranked UConn Huskies will be coming off a rare loss when they host South Florida on Saturday afternoon. Connecticut was bounced 76-68 at home by Pittsburgh on Monday, which dropped them to 24-2 straight-up and 12-10 against-the-spread on the season. South Florida is coming off a 65-40 loss to Georgetown; the Bulls are struggling at 8-17 SU but 13-11 ATS so far this year.

No. 2 Oklahoma will play in Texas on Saturday night, with No. 3 North Carolina at Maryland, No. 4 Pittsburgh hosting DePaul, and No. 5 Memphis at UTEP. As well, it'll be No. 7 Louisville at Cincinnati, and No. 10 Marquette at Georgetown. No. 21 Butler is also back in action on Saturday; they'll play Davidson in a Bracketbuster contest at 12:00pm ET. Wildcats star Stephen Curry is day-to-day with a sprained ankle, and he missed Davidson's loss to Citadel on Wednesday.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

The Penguins and Flyers will meet in Philadelphia on Saturday afternoon in one of 13 games on the National Hockey League schedule. Pittsburgh picked up a victory for new head coach Dan Bylsma on Thursday night, as Sergei Gonchar scored his first goal of the season in a 5-4 win over Montreal. The Flyers are coming off a 6-3 win over the Sabres on Thursday night, with Mike Richards scoring twice. Philadelphia goalie Martin Biron picked up his third straight victory.

There are three other NHL matinees on Saturday, with Chicago at Dallas, Phoenix at Los Angeles, and Ottawa at Montreal. That Sens/Habs matchup is part of the annual Hockey Day in Canada event up north, with Vancouver at Toronto and Calgary at Edmonton later in the day. Rounding out the Saturday slate: Atlanta at San Jose, Anaheim at Columbus, Boston at Florida, the Rangers at Buffalo, New Jersey at the Islanders, Detroit at Minnesota, and Nashville at St. Louis. The Blues beat the Predators by a score of 2-1 in Nashville on Thursday.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

NASCAR hits the track for a tune-up race on Saturday, as the Nationwide Series stages the Stater Brothers 300 at Fontana's Auto Club Speedway. Tony Stewart won the first Nationwide Series event of the year last week, claiming the checkered flag in the Camping World 300 at Daytona. Carl Edwards, Clint Bowyer, Kyle Busch, and Greg Biffle rounded out the top five drivers in that race.

New Orleans Hornets at Utah Jazz [NBA | 9 PM ET]

Hornets: New Orleans has lost in its last five trips to Salt Lake City and is coming off a tough overtime loss against the Lakers on Friday. The Hornets got a season-high 31 points from Rasual Butler but saw point guard Chris Paul foul out in the extra session on a controversial foul against LA's Kobe Bryant. The Lakers also held a 32-15 advantage at the free-throw line, which helped negate a 32-19 surge by New Orleans in the fourth quarter that tied the game in an eventual 115-111 loss.

Hornets are 1-5-1 ATS in the last 7 meetings.
The OVER is 7-3 in New Orleans' last 10 games overall.

        PROJECTED SCORE: 96

He changed the lives of thousands of people. We have all been blessed by his generosity and love for this community, and I am blessed to call him my friend. He gave us a lot of joy and we will miss him.”

Pick 'n' Roll: Saturday's best NBA bets
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New Orleans Hornets at Utah Jazz (-8, 199)

Under the ownership of Larry Miller, the Utah Jazz have been one of the NBA's most stable teams over the past two decades.

A day after his death, the Jazz take the court Saturday night against the New Orleans Hornets seeking their fourth straight win overall and seventh in a row at home.

Miller, who was 64, died of complications from type 2 diabetes. His wife said she was able to tell him about the Jazz's most recent win - a 90-85 victory over the defending champion Celtics on Thursday.

Utah said it will observe a moment of silence before Saturday's game.

"This is a sad day for me, our team, the fans of the Utah Jazz and the NBA," Jazz point guard Deron Williams said. "Mr. Miller was a terrific man and friend. He changed the lives of thousands of people. We have all been blessed by his generosity and love for this community, and I am blessed to call him my friend. He gave us a lot of joy and we will miss him."

Miller's death could bring added motivation for the Jazz, who hold a half-game lead over Phoenix for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference. Utah, which has won six of seven, is coming off two of its biggest wins of the season - a four-point victory over the Lakers before the All-Star break and Thursday's win over the Celtics.

The win improved Utah to 23-6 at home - the fifth-best home record in the NBA. The Jazz have held opponents to 90 or fewer points in four of their last six home games.

New Orleans (32-21) is very familiar with how difficult it is to play in Salt Lake City. The Hornets have lost five straight there, averaging 83.0 points in those games while getting outscored by an average of 22 points during that stretch.

Utah won the most recent meeting at EnergySolutions Arena, 116-90 on Jan. 7.

The Hornets will looking to bounce back from a 115-111 overtime loss to the Lakers on Friday. New Orleans had won four of its previous six, holding opponents to 91.0 points.

Tyson Chandler was on the bench after returning to the Hornets following the reversal of his trade to Oklahoma City because of a failed physical. He hasn't played since Jan. 19 because of a left ankle injury, although the reason the Thunder gave was because of a supposed toe injury.

It's not known when Chandler will return, but the Hornets could use his inside presence. They gave up 50 points in the paint to the Lakers and surrendered 52 to the Jazz in January.

            Pick: Jazz

Oklahoma Thunder at Golden State Warriors (-8.5, 228.5)

Golden State (19-36) won four of five before the All-Star break - with the victories coming at home over playoff contenders Phoenix, Utah, New York and Portland.

The Warriors attempted to carry the momentum over past the break Wednesday, but lost 129-121 to the Los Angeles Lakers - owners of the NBA's best record.

Stephen Jackson and Corey Maggette each scored 24 points in the loss while Jamal Crawford added 23. Golden State, the second-highest scoring team in the NBA at 107.7 points per game, is averaging 121.5 points during this homestand.

Jackson is averaging 26.6 points this month, but has played at least 45 minutes in four games during February and criticized Nelson's handling of the team's lineup.

"I could have came out when (Bryant) came out," said Jackson, who guarded the Lakers' superstar. "He got a lot of rest. I think the thing to do was take me out when he came out of the game."

Jackson doesn't figure to get much rest Saturday when the Warriors host Oklahoma City (13-42), which has beaten them twice this season despite being tied for the second-worst record in the NBA. Jackson missed Golden State's only win against the Thunder because of a sprained left hand, but played more than 40 minutes in both losses, averaging 23.0 points.

Second-year star Kevin Durant had another solid game. Three nights after finishing with a career-high 47 points in a loss to the Hornets, Durant went 12 of 23 from the floor and finished with 35 points.

He has had two 40-point games in his last four contests against the Warriors.

            Pick: Over

Ice picks: Saturday's best NHL bets
              --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Bruins at Florida Panthers (+130, 5.5)

The Boston Bruins had lost four straight for the first time this season heading into their latest game, but all they needed to get back in the win column was a matchup with a Southeast Division opponent.

              Another one probably won't hurt.

The Bruins look to continue their dominance over the Southeast when they continue a five-game road trip Saturday night against the Florida Panthers, whom they've beaten convincingly in their first two meetings.

Boston (40-10-8) has the most points in the NHL but picked up only two from Feb. 7-14, going 0-2-2 in that span.

After one-goal losses in New Jersey and Nashville to begin this trip, the Bruins headed to Carolina on Tuesday and completed a season sweep of the Hurricanes, getting goals from five players in a 5-1 victory.

Tim Thomas made 30 saves in a 4-2 home win over the Panthers on Nov. 21, and Manny Fernandez beat Florida 4-0 at the BankAtlantic Center on Dec. 6.

Thomas was excellent as usual Tuesday, holding an opponent to one goal for the fourth time in his last six starts. The most significant development out of the win in Carolina, though, was a pair of power-play goals. The Bruins had been 2-for-36 with a manpower advantage in their last nine games before Blake Wheeler and Chuck Kobasew converted against the Hurricanes.

The Panthers could use a little confidence against the Bruins considering they may see them in the postseason. Florida has 66 points, putting it in a tie with Buffalo for seventh place in the East.

The Panthers will be closing a five-game homestand Saturday after splitting the first four contests. Florida earned an impressive 4-0 victory over Atlantic-leading New Jersey on Tuesday, only to fall 4-0 to Chicago on Thursday.

              Pick: Florida

Nashville Predators at St. Louis Blues (-130, 5.5)

The two teams close a home-and-home series Saturday at the Scottrade Center, as St. Louis looks to remain undefeated in regulation against Nashville.

The Blues (25-26-7) have recorded a point in all five meetings with the Predators (27-28-4) this season, going 4-0-1 in the season series. The Central Division rivals met Thursday in Nashville, with St. Louis winning 2-1 in overtime - the third time this season a game between the teams has gone beyond regulation.

With both clubs needing to gain ground to reach the postseason - Nashville is one point ahead of St. Louis but four behind Edmonton for the final playoff spot in the West - neither is surprised by the competitive nature of their matchups.

St. Louis has won three of its last four overall and is 9-3-4 since Jan. 15.

Former Predators goaltender Chris Mason made 28 saves Thursday, improving to 7-3-3 with a 1.61 goals-against average since Jan. 21. He is 2-0-1 with a 1.25 GAA this season against Nashville, which traded him to the Blues last June.

While the meetings in Nashville have been close, the Blues have dominated this series recently at the Scottrade Center. St. Louis has outscored the Predators 11-5 in two home meetings this season and is 5-1-1 in the last seven games against them on home ice.

One of the few positives for Nashville's offense recently has been Steve Sullivan, who has played in 18 games since returning from a back injury which had sidelined him since February 2007. He has scored all three of Nashville's goals over the last two games.

              Pick: St. Louis
