    Daily Sports Roundup

    Thursday, February 19

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Spurs hit the floor in Detroit, the Celtics return to action against the Jazz, and Lefty tees it up at the Northern Trust Open.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA's Thursday doubleheader this week tips off with San Antonio at Detroit at 8:00pm ET. The Spurs (35-17 straight-up, 25-25-2 against-the-spread) were upset 112-107 by the Knicks on Tuesday, with Manu Ginobili sitting out to rest a sore ankle. The Pistons (27-25 SU, 20-32 ATS) were bounced 92-86 by the Bucks on Tuesday; Antonio McDyess scored 24 points for Detroit in that defeat.

The late game then has Boston at Utah at 10:30pm ET. The Celtics (44-11 SU, 31-24 ATS) haven't played since before the All-Star break; their last contest was a 99-92 win over Dallas back on February 12. The Jazz (31-23 SU, 28-26 ATS) were in action on Tuesday night, as they rolled to a 117-99 win over Memphis. Utah's Andrei Kirilenko returned from an ankle injury with 14 points in the victory.

    The march toward Madness . . .

The top college hoops matchup on Thursday night has No. 22 Washington playing on the road against No. 20 UCLA. The Huskies pounded Oregon 103-84 last time out and now sit at 19-6 SU and 15-8 ATS on the season. The Bruins got 26 points from Darren Collison in their 84-72 loss to Arizona in their most recent outing. UCLA's marks fell to 19-6 SU and 12-12 ATS on the year with that defeat.

No. 9 Duke will be at Madison Square Garden to take on St. John's on Thursday night; the Blue Devils fell 80-74 to Boston College on Sunday. As well, it'll be No. 16 Xavier at Charlotte, Loyola Marymount at No. 17 Gonzaga, and Rutgers at No. 12 Villanova. The Wildcats remain a profitable pick at 13-8 ATS this season.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

There are a dozen games on the NHL's schedule on Thursday night, including the Blackhawks on the road in Florida. Chicago picked up a 5-3 win in Tampa Bay on Tuesday night, with Jonathan Toews scoring twice and Patrick Kane adding a goal and two assists. The Panthers are coming off a 4-0 blanking of the Devils on Tuesday, with Tomas Vokoun stopping all 36 shots in the shutout win.

The Canadiens will take on the Pens in Pittsburgh on Thursday, with Alexei Kovalev not making the trip at the request of team management. As well, it'll be Carolina at the Islanders, New Jersey at Tampa Bay, Vancouver at Ottawa, Buffalo at Philadelphia, Columbus at Toronto, St. Louis at Nashville, Calgary at Minnesota, Edmonton at Dallas, Atlanta at Phoenix, and Los Angeles at San Jose.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

The PGA Tour will tee off in Pacific Palisades, California on Thursday in the Northern Trust Open at Riviera Country Club. Defending tournament champion Phil Mickelson is the 8/1 favorite to get on track this weekend and pick up the trophy, with Padraig Harrington at 10/1 odds to grab the win, and Ernie Els listed at 12/1 odds. Geoff Ogilvy, Jim Furyk, Vijay Singh, and Mike Weir all sit at 15/1 on the Vegas chart; Weir finished second last week at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

Thursday's List of 13: Wrapping up a basketball Wednesday......

        13) I got the idea Bob Huggins was a little annoyed with his team as West Virginia called its third timeout 7:05 into the game against the Fighting Irish Wednesday. You only get five timeouts a game. West Virginia wound up leading by hoop at the half and winning the game, 79-68- they won either because they're tougher than Notre Dame, or because they didn't want to go to practice Thursday if they lost.

        12) Davidson misses Stephen Curry; they got whacked at home by surging Citadel 64-46. Bulldogs won 10th straight game as Coach Ed Conroy makes a strong argument for National Coach of the Year. The Wildcats shot 25.4% from the floor in this game, 3-23 from the arc.

        11) George Mason beat Drexel twice this season, by a combined total of two points-- 56-55 in Philly, 49-48 last night in Fairfax.

        10) Halftime score between two of the better teams in the MAC: Akron 17, Miami OH 14.......Yikes. Worse yet, in the Big 11, Penn State won at Illinois, 38-33. Imagine laying nine points with a home team and they score 33 freakin' points? Wow.

        9) 122 times this season a single player has scored more than the 33 points Illinois scored in this game.

        8) Tough times at Texas Tech, where the administration is in a can't win battle against its highly successful football coach, while the hoop team is positively awful. Mike Leach is going to get what he wants at some school. Not sure what happens to Tech when Leach leaves. As for basketball coach Pat Knight, he wouldn't turn down an extension, but it is highly unlikely he'll be offered one.

        7) Tennessee got waxed 81-65 at Ole Miss; Volunteers have terrible chemistry, body language-- you watch them play, and they bark at each other, they don't defend well, they're just a soft, overrated team.

        6) Cal-Northridge had won six in row, but with PG Jenkins hurt in a car wreck Saturday, the Matadors got pounded 73-51 at Cal-Irvine on Wednesday. Northridge, Long Beach are now atop Big West at 8-4.

        5) UNLV lost at Wyoming, so they can kiss an at-large bid goodbye, but luckily for them, they have Mountain West tourney at home in the Thomas and Mack Center. Rebels were 5-26 from arc in Laramie.

        4) Northwestern made 13-25 from arc, rallying from 37-28 deficit at the half to beat Ohio State 72-69. Now Wildcats head on road in the Big 11-- they're looking like an NIT team for sure.

        3) Alvin Gentry lucks out by starting out as Phoenix head coach with a pair of games against the Clippers, but Suns put up 140-142 points in those two games-- are they back to being the running Suns?

        2) Upset of the night was Georgia State (+13.5) winning 70-68 up in Boston against Northeastern; Panthers shot 55.8%, 9-19 from arc.

        1) ESPN's featured Bracket Buster matchup was supposed to be the Butler-Davidson game, but now with Curry hurt and Butler losing its last two games, to Loyola/Milwaukee, not so much. Northern Iowa is also on a skid, losing last two games to Wichita State/Drake, as they head to Albany to play Siena Saturday afternoon.

San Antonio Spurs at Detroit Pistons [TNT | 8 PM ET]

Spurs: San Antonio will be looking to avoid its first three-game losing streak since an 0-3 start to the season after falling at New York on Tuesday in overtime, 112-107. Tony Parker struggled with his shot and made only 5-of-20 from the field for 14 points while Tim Duncan missed the potential game-winning shot at the end of regulation. “I got some shots to go down and started feeling good about it,” Duncan said. “I wish the last one would’ve gone, too, but such is life.”

Spurs are 1-6 ATS in the last 7 meetings.
The OVER is 8-1 in San Antonio's last 9 games overall.

Key Injuries - G Manu Ginobili (ankle) is OUT.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Pistons (NA): Detroit has dropped seven of its last eight home games following a 92-86 setback to Milwaukee to open the second half of the season. The Pistons are just 14-14 at the Palace this season after going 34-7 there a year ago. “You are supposed to play your best basketball at home, and we obviously aren’t doing that,” Pistons guard Allen Iverson said. “I don’t think there’s any focus. It’s easy to be focused when you are on the road and have 20,000 of their fans cheering against you, but you can’t come home and expect your fans to win the games for you. They help, but you’ve got to play.”

Pistons are 1-7 ATS in their last 8 games overall.
The UNDER is 7-1 in the last 8 meetings.

              Key Injuries - NONE

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Boston Celtics at Utah Jazz [TNT | 10:30 PM ET]

Celtics (NA): Boston hopes to pick up where it left off a week ago before the All-Star break - with a road win on national television. The Celtics have won nine straight games away from home and picked up a 99-92 victory at Dallas last Thursday after trailing 51-40 at halftime. Paul Pierce led the comeback by scoring 18 of his 31 points in the fourth quarter. “I got in my rhythm,” Pierce said. “We had a play that was working. I got into my sweet spot and took the shots.”

Celtics are 8-1 ATS in their last 9 road games.
The UNDER is 7-1-1 in Boston's last 9 games vs. Northwest Division.

Key Injuries - F Brian Scalabrine (head) is probable.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Jazz: Utah point guard Deron Williams is playing his best stretch of the season, averaging 30.8 points on 56.5 percent shooting and 9.5 assists in the last six games. However, the Jazz also welcomed back Andrei Kirilenko in a 117-99 rout of Memphis on Tuesday, proving they could be very dangerous come playoff time if everybody is healthy. “He made a big steal and then on the other end had a big basket and then blocked a couple of shots,” Jazz head coach Jerry Sloan said of Kirilenko. “That was something that we missed with him. When he’s not around we still have to try and win and we had to win tonight with Mehmet out.”

Jazz are 4-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings.
The OVER is 7-2 in Utah's last 9 home games.

Key Injuries - C Mehmet Okur (illness) is questionable.

              PROJECTED SCORE: TBD

Rutgers Scarlett Knights at Villanova Wildcats (-18, 139)

The momentum Villanova built with its recent offensive outbursts was wiped out with a defensive collapse.

Facing Rutgers seems to offer a pretty good chance to begin seizing it back.

The No. 12 Wildcats will try to rebound from their worst loss in more than a year Thursday night when they host Rutgers, which is seeking just its second Big East win this season.

Villanova (20-5, 8-4) was asserting itself as a potential darkhorse in the conference title race with six straight wins from Jan. 24-Feb. 10, scoring more than 90 points in each of the last three.

The Wildcats topped 100 in home wins over ranked foes Syracuse and Marquette, shooting at least 54 percent in both.

They came back to earth Friday night at West Virginia by making 42.3 percent of their shots, but more alarming was the lack of defense. Villanova fell behind 52-34 at halftime on their way to a 93-72 loss, letting Mountaineers forward Da'Sean Butler score 43 points.

                        Pick: Over 139

Washington Huskies at UCLA Bruins (-8, 151.5)

While the Huskies have won six of their last eight overall versus UCLA, they're 1-21 at Pauley Pavilion dating back to the 1986-87 season, with the lone win a 69-65 victory on Jan. 14, 2006.

UCLA also will be eager for a victory after its first back-to-back losses of the season, which caused the team to drop nine spots in the rankings.

The Bruins defense faltered on the trip, allowing the two opponents to shoot a combined 54.3 percent from the field - more than 10 percent above UCLA's season average. On Saturday, Arizona scored 49 points in the first half to open an 18-point lead.

"It was one of those days where everybody is not on the same page," Bruins senior guard Darren Collison said.

Collison had 26 points and classmate Josh Shipp added 18, but freshman guard Jrue Holiday was held to six as his erratic play continued. Holiday has totaled 14 points over the last three games after averaging 13.7 in his previous three.

Senior center Alfred Aboya, the Bruins' leader with 5.6 rebounds per game, has missed practice this week while dealing with flu-like symptoms but is probable for Thursday's game. UCLA will likely need him against Brockman, who ranks in the top 10 nationally with 11.1 rebounds per game.

Washington averages 41.3 rebounds to rank among the national leaders. UCLA's 28.8 average in conference play is second-worst in the Pac-10.

                        Pick: Washington +8
