        Ice Picks: NHL best bets
        -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Islanders at New York Rangers (-225, 5.5)

After a 5-0 start and a 10-2-1 October, the New York Rangers never imagined they'd be in danger of missing the playoffs.

Lately, though, they have been slipping much closer to that possibility.

The reeling Rangers hope a matchup with the last-place New York Islanders will help them snap out of their second-half slump, and they'll try to avoid a ninth loss in 10 games Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden.

While the Rangers offense was never among the league's best this season, the sputtering unit has been the primary culprit for the team's recent struggles, as it has scored two or fewer goals in eight of its last nine games. The Rangers are 1-6-2 over that span, and now they rank last in the league with 2.33 goals per game.

The power play has been especially dismal for coach Tom Renney's club, converting once in 34 chances in 10 games since the All-Star break. The unit ranks 28th in the league for the season at 13.5 percent.

The Rangers (30-22-6) were 0-for-3 with the man advantage in Monday night's 2-1 loss at St. Louis, but Renney saw some reason for optimism despite the team's third straight defeat.

"We got four power-play shots, which might not sound like a lot," Renney said. "But for us, that's an accomplishment. We had traffic, the shots were intelligent shots, so what we're doing right now is trying to rebuild our foundation if you will."

        Pick: Under 5.5

Los Angeles Kings at Anaheim Ducks (-145, 5.5)

Both the Los Angeles Kings and Anaheim Ducks are fighting to get into playoff position in the Western Conference.

But going into the southern California rivals' final meeting of the season, they're also both trying to regain their confidence defensively after losses to the same lowly opponent.

The Kings will try to avoid a fourth straight defeat Wednesday night against the Ducks, who will be playing their last home game before a season-high six-game road trip.

Anaheim (28-25-5) had allowed three goals while winning back-to-back games over Calgary going into Sunday's meeting with last-place Atlanta, but gave up that many to Ilya Kovalchuk in the second period alone en route to an 8-4 loss.

Ducks goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere had showed signs of improvement against the Flames, but his inconsistent season continued as he allowed five goals on 25 shots before being pulled midway through the second. Giguere's 3.09 goals-against average is his worst in a decade, and he's been losing time to backup Jonas Hiller, who's 4-0-0 with a 0.74 GAA in four career starts versus the Kings (24-22-9).

Against Atlanta, Anaheim allowed 43 shots and gave up eight goals for the first time since an 8-0 loss at Dallas on March 21, 2001.

        Pick: Los Angeles +135

Orlando Magic at New Orleans Hornets [ESPN | 8 PM ET]

Magic: Orlando got a huge performance from Dwight Howard on Tuesday en route to a 107-102 overtime win over Charlotte. Howard scored 45 points on 16-of-23 shooting and grabbed 19 rebounds while blocking eight shots. “We really needed this game off the break,” Howard said. “When my teammates see me bringing it at both ends every night, they will do the same. I have to start everything at both ends.” The team rallied back from a seven-point deficit in the third quarter to pull off the victory. “Dwight was unbelievable, unbelievable,” Magic head coach Stan Van Gundy said. “I mean phenomenal. He just put us on his back. That’s leadership right there, that kind of play on the floor. It kept everyone else motivated.”

Magic are 1-3 ATS in their last 4 games overall.
The UNDER is 3-1 in Orlando's last 4 games overall.

Key Injuries - G Jameer Nelson (shoulder) is OUT.

PROJECTED SCORE: 96 (Side Play of the Day)

Hornets (-2, O/U 190): New Orleans dealt center Tyson Chandler to Oklahoma City on Tuesday after he missed the previous 12 games before the All-Star break with an ankle injury. The Hornets forwards Chris Wilcox and Joe Smith in the deal, but it's unclear whether or not either will play against the Magic. That could be a big problem against Orlando's Howard. “It just leaves a big question mark in the middle - I think we were all kind of looking forward to him getting back healthy and plugging that middle up for us. Now we just don’t know,” New Orleans All-Star forward David West said. “We hope that these guys coming in can come in and provide some presence.”

Hornets are 2-7 ATS in their last 9 games overall.
The UNDER is 9-1 in the last 10 meetings.

Key Injuries - G Morris Peterson (foot) is doubtful.

                      PROJECTED SCORE: 93

Los Angeles Lakers at Golden State Warriors [ESPN | 10:30 PM ET]

Lakers (-5, O/U 227): LA picked up where it left off on Tuesday with a 96-83 rout of Atlanta, the team's eight victory in nine games. Now the Lakers hit the road against a rested Warriors team that has gone 12-2-1 ATS in their last 15 home games. “Playing through a lot of road games, being consistent, not thinking this is a done deal yet,” LA head coach Phil Jackson said. “Getting off to a good start coming out of this break is also important to us.” The Lakers are 9-4 ATS when playing without rest this season.

Lakers are 7-2 ATS in their last 9 games overall.
The OVER is 9-1 in LA's last 10 road games.

Warriors: Golden State put together a season-high three-game winning streak before the All-Star break and hopes to continue that momentum against the Lakers. Providence at #7 Louisville [ESPN2 | 7:30 PM ET]

Providence: The Friars will need to continue their hot shooting if they have any hopes of pulling off the upset at Louisville. They have won two straight games by a combined 25 points after shooting less than 40 percent from the field in three straight losses. The Cardinals lead the Big East in scoring defense - allowing 61 points per game - and have held five of their last eight opponents to 59 or less.

Providence is 1-4 ATS in its last 5 games overall.
The OVER is 7-1 in Providence's last 8 games as an underdog.

Louisville (-14, O/U 146): The Cardinals have won the last seven meetings with Providence and have never lost to the Friars at home, going 4-0. They sit just one game behind UConn for the top spot in the Big East, and three of their last four opponents are .500 or worse in conference play. Louisville rebounded from its worst loss of the season at Notre Dame last Thursday by crushing DePaul 99-54 on Sunday. “We have to move forward,” Cardinals guard Preston Knowles said. “We still have our main goal.”

Louisville is 9-3 ATS in the last 12 games overall.
The OVER is 3-1 in Louisville's last 4 home games.

Oklahoma State at Texas Tech [ESPN2 | 9:30 PM ET]

Oklahoma State (-1, O/U 163): The Cowboys are coming off an 86-67 rout of Iowa State on Saturday but have put the victory in perspective considering the Cyclones are one of the worst teams in the Big 12. They had lost four of their previous five games, going 0-5 ATS during that stretch. “It was huge, because it’s getting to the part in the season where we need to quit losing,” Oklahoma State guard Terrel Harris. “This is the time where teams usually peak. Like coach said, ‘This is a new season for us.’”

Oklahoma State is 1-5 ATS in its last 6 games overall.
The UNDER is 4-1 in the last 5 meetings.

Texas Tech: Of the 12 wins for the Red Raiders this season, 11 of them have come at home. They have played five of their last seven games on the road but covered three of the last four. Texas Tech also will be hosting an Oklahoma State team that has dropped three straight both SU & ATS on the road overall along with three of the last four meetings in Lubbock. The Red Raiders open a two-game homestand against Oklahoma State before visiting Texas next Wednesday.

Texas Tech is 1-6 SU in its last 7 games overall.
The OVER is 5-1-1 in Texas Tech's last 7 games overall.

Cleveland Cavaliers at Toronto Raptors (+7, 189.5)

Two weeks ago Cleveland blasted the Raptors 101-83. That was with a healthy Chris Bosh in the lineup.

It should be a similar outcome Wednesday.

LeBron James scored 33 points and was 12-for-12 from the charity stripe on Feb. 3. He registered two blocks and one steal against Toronto.

In fact, James single-handily outscored Toronto in the first quarter.

“There’s not much you can say,” Bosh told reporters. “It's not the first time he (James) has done it. It won’t be the last…. He was really rolling to start the game.”

In two contests against the Raptors, LeBron is averaging over 31 points. He is leading the league in scoring with 28.5 points a night.

The Cavaliers are 5-1 straight up (SU) and 4-2 against the spread (ATS) in their last six meetings with the Raptors.

                            Pick: Cleveland -7

Phoenix Suns at Los Angeles Clippers (+7.5, 228.5)

This is the beginning of a new era in Phoenix.

Phoenix assistant coach Alvin Gentry took over head coaching duties from Terry Porter this week and sparked the team to score 140 points against the Clippers Tuesday.

Gentry is the only holdover from Mike D’Antoni’s staff, who’s up-tempo style led Phoenix to 54 wins or more in each of the last four seasons.

Suns All-Star forward Amare Stoudemire, who excelled in D’Antoni’s system, is one member of the club excited about playing for Gentry.

“I think Alvin is a great players’ coach,” Stoudemire told reporters after the All-Star Game. “He gets along with his players well. Of course, he’ll have a great game plan from a basketball standpoint. I think it will be somewhat up-tempo.”

The Suns were 3-1 SU last season against L.A.

                            Pick: Suns -7.5
