    Daily Sports Roundup

    Tuesday, February 17

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Lakers highlight the NBA schedule as the league returns to action, and the Bruins look to snap out of their current funk.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA returns to action on Tuesday night with 10 games on its post-break slate. The top matchup of the night will take place out on the west coast, with the Hawks traveling to Los Angeles to take on the Lakers. Atlanta enters the second half of the season at 31-21 straight-up and 28-24 against-the-spread, while Lakers sit at 42-10 SU and 26-25-1 ATS atop the Western Conference standings.

The Magic will play host to the Bobcats on Tuesday night, with Minnesota at Washington, Philadelphia at Indiana, San Antonio at New York, Milwaukee at Detroit, New Orleans at Oklahoma City, New Jersey at Houston, and Memphis at Utah. As well, the Clippers will be in Phoenix to play the Suns; fired Phoenix head coach Terry Porter will be replaced by assistant Alvin Gentry for that game.

    The march toward Madness . . .

There are four ranked teams in action on the college hoops schedule on Tuesday night, and two of them will take the floor at Mackey Arena when Purdue hosts Michigan State. The Boilermakers are at 19-6 SU and 11-11 ATS on the season after knocking off Iowa 49-45 in their last contest. The Spartans are a lofty 20-4 SU and 12-9 ATS this year; they beat Michigan 54-42 in their meeting last week.

The other games of note on Tuesday has Clemson hosting Maryland, and Marquette getting a visit from Seton Hall. The Golden Eagles had no trouble beating St. John's Saturday, getting 20 points from Jerel McNeal in a 73-59 win.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

The struggling Bruins will look to get back on track in Carolina on Tuesday night in one of seven National Hockey League games on the schedule. Boston has now lost four straight games, most recently falling 3-2 to the Predators in a shootout on Saturday night. The Hurricanes blanked the Sabres 3-0 in their last outing, with Cam Ward stopping all 36 shots and Eric Staal scoring his 24th goal.

Buffalo will get back on the ice on Tuesday as well, as they'll be playing across the border in Toronto. Rounding out the night's schedule: Chicago at Tampa Bay, New Jersey at Florida, Vancouver at Calgary, Ottawa at Colorado, and Edmonton at San Jose; the Sharks fell 6-5 to the Devils last time out on Sunday.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

The Daytona 500 was shortened by rain on Sunday afternoon, allowing Matt Kenseth to take the checkered flag. Kevin Harvick, A.J. Allmendinger, Clint Bowyer, and Elliott Sadler made up the rest of the non-marquee Top 5 at the event. The Sprint Cup Series' top drivers will look to get back on track this week when the circuit heads to Auto Club Speedway in Fontana for the Auto Club 500.

        Tips and Trends
        -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Atlanta Hawks at Los Angeles Lakers [10:30 PM ET]

Hawks: Atlanta finished off the first half of the regular season by winning four of five, capped by an impressive 99-95 victory at Detroit. The Hawks sit in the fourth spot in the Eastern Conference and would have to make up 7.5 games to catch Orlando for the third seed in the second half. While that isn't likely to happen, they are still be in much better shape than last year when they earned the final spot in the East and lost to the Celtics in the first round.

Hawks are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall.
The OVER is 6-2 in the last 8 meetings.

        Key Injuries - NONE

        PROJECTED SCORE: 102

Lakers (-9.5, O/U 213.5): LA owns the best record in the NBA at 42-10 but still has some concerns in the second half of the season due to the loss of center Andrew Bynum to a knee injury for the second year in a row. There have been rumors circulating that the Lakers could look to re-acquire Shaquille O'Neal from Phoenix to help fill Bynum's void, although that remains a longshot. They won seven of their last eight games before the All-Star break, including nationally televised victories over the top two teams in the Eastern Conference (Boston and Cleveland).

Lakers are 1-8 ATS in their last 9 games vs. Southeast Division.
The OVER is 7-2 in LA's last 9 games overall.

Key Injuries - C Andrew Bynum (knee) is OUT.

        PROJECTED SCORE: 112

Pick ‘n’ Roll: NBA best bets
          -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Milwaukee Bucks at Detroit Pistons (-7, 195.5)

Detroit has lost eight of its last 10 overall but has had success against the Bucks.

The Pistons have covered the spread in four straight tilts against Milwaukee. They are 7-3 against the spread (ATS) in their last 10 against the Bucks.

Milwaukee, meanwhile, is 1-3 in its last three road tilts and has struggled considerably without Michael Redd, who is out for the remainder of the season with a torn ACL and MCL in his left knee.

Redd was leading the Bucks in scoring with more than 21 points a night. But the Pistons need to keep a body on Bucks guard Ramon Sessions, who scored 44 points in a loss to them earlier this month.

Milwaukee is 1-5 ATS in its last six road games and is 2-5-1 ATS in its last eight trips to the Motor City.

          Pick: Pistons

Charlotte Bobcats at Orlando Magic (N/A)

There is no doubt that Dwight Howard is the league’s Superman. Howard is putting up 20 points, 14 rebounds and two blocked shots a night.

In his last home game against the Bobcats dating back to 2007, he scored 14 points and grabbed 21 rebounds in a 104-95 Magic victory.

But the big man knows that he doesn’t need to score 20 points a night to help his club.

“I know it's not about points every night,” Howard told reporters. “It’s about playing defense, blocking shots and controlling the paint at both ends.”

The Magic are ranked fifth in opponent scoring (94 PPG) and third in opponent field goal percentage (43 percent).

The Bobcats, meanwhile, are 0-6 ATS in the last six meetings in Orlando. In the last 17 meetings between the two clubs, the home club is 14-3 ATS.

          Pick: Magic

#6 Michigan State at #19 Purdue [ESPN | 7 PM ET]

Michigan State: The Spartans are a perfect 7-0 in true road games this season and have not played since last Tuesday's 54-42 win at Michigan. “Believe me, we have a lot of games left and some tough ones, but this was a big step,” Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo said after beating the Wolverines. Izzo's team went 5-14 on the road the previous two seasons and is now within one victory of matching the school record set back in 1978, which was Magic Johnson's freshman season.

Michigan State is 5-1 SU & ATS in its last 6 games overall.
The UNDER is 12-2 in Michigan State's last 14 Tuesday games.

Key Injuries - F Raymar Morgan (mononucleosis) is probable.

PROJECTED SCORE: 61 (UNDER - Total Play of the Day)

Purdue (-3, O/U 128): The Boilermakers have won the last two home meetings with Michigan State and own a 12-2 record at Mackey Arena this season. The two losses have come to Illinois and Duke, and Purdue is 19-0 when allowing 64 points or less this year. “You have to hang your hat on defense because you’re going to have nights like this where the ball doesn’t go in,” Purdue head coach Matt Painter said following a 49-45 win at Iowa. “If you can consistently get stops late in the game you’re going to give yourself a chance and we did that.”

Favorite is 9-3 ATS in the last 12 meetings.
The UNDER is 7-1 in the last 8 meetings.

Key Injuries - F Robbie Hummel (back) is probable.

                PROJECTED SCORE: 63

Kentucky at Vanderbilt [ESPN | 9 PM ET]

Kentucky (-1, O/U 135): The Wildcats were able to rely on leading scorer Jodie Meeks in a 79-63 victory at Arkansas on Saturday, as he enjoyed his second-highest scoring game of the season. Meeks totaled 45 points against the Razorbacks to help overcome the loss of Patrick Patterson, who sat out with a sprained ankle. “Jodie Meeks was fantastic,” Kentucky head coach Billy Gillispie said. “I didn’t know he had that many points." He scored a career-high 54 points at Tennessee back on January 13th.

Kentucky is 10-4 ATS in the last 14 meetings.
The UNDER is 15-7 in Kentucky's last 22 games vs. SEC.

Key Injuries - C Patrick Patterson (ankle) is questionable.

PROJECTED SCORE: 70 (Side Play of the Day)

Vanderbilt: The Commodores saw their three-game winning streak come to an end on Saturday with a 69-50 loss at Tennessee. They shot just 39 percent from the field and trailed 26-18 at halftime after shooting nearly 52 percent in their previous four. “I did not think we competed at the level we normally are used to our guys competing,” Vandy head coach Kevin Stalling said. “I thought we, for the first time, did not really fight like we normally fight, and that was disappointing.”

Vandy is 2-7-1 ATS in its last 10 games overall.
The UNDER is 8-3-1 in Vandy's last 12 home games..

                Key Injuries - NONE

                PROJECTED SCORE: 65

Buffalo Sabres at Toronto Maple Leafs (+105, 6)

The Buffalo Sabres failed to show up Sunday night falling 3-0 to the Carolina Hurricanes. Both teams are battling it out for the Eastern Conference’s final playoff spot, but the Hurricanes were the only ones playing like it mattered.

“They outworked us in every aspect of the game,” Sabres captain Craig Rivet told reporters. “It’s their second game in two nights, they had to travel, they came into our building, and from the very first drop of the puck they beat us in every single shift the whole night.”

Toronto, meanwhile, scored six unanswered goals against the Pittsburgh Penguins Saturday night and easily skated away with a 6-2 win.

But don’t expect the Leafs to face the same level of competition Tuesday night. The Sabres will be looking to bounce back from their embarrassing performance.

                    Pick: Sabres -115

Ottawa Senators at Colorado Avalanche (-125, 5.5)

The Ottawa Senators have been on a roll since replacing coach Craig Hartsburgh with Cory Clouston on Feb. 1. They've gone 4-1-1, but they're still 14 points away from the last playoff spot.

“We just have to keep playing the way we’re playing,” defenseman Chris Phillips said. “We can’t get too focused on where we are and what we have to do. Right now, it’s working for us and we’re getting wins. If we just continue to do that, when it comes down to it we might have a chance (at the post-season).”

The same can’t be said about the Avalanche who find themselves in last place in the Western Conference after losing four of their last five contests. Things may be looking up for Colorado as Adam Foote was back in the lineup for Sunday’s win over the Detroit Red Wings. It still won’t be enough to stop the confident Senators.

                    Pick: Senators +115

Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.........

                              13) There is no doubt DeJuan Blair set the tone early for Pittsburgh when he flipped Hasheem Thabeet over his shoulder in an impressive show of strength early in the Pitt-UConn game. Clean play, but who the more physical team was got established right away. Blair had 22 points, 23 rebounds in a dominating performance in the lane.

                              12) Teams play again in last regular season game; will be interesting to see if Thabeet suffers any lingering effect-- it looked like he might have hyperextended his elbow a little bit on that play.

                              11) Texas Longhorns look to be running on fumes, getting beat easily by Texas A&M after needing OT over weekend to win at Colorado. Longhorns should be an early out if they make it to the NCAAs.

                              10) LSU is first SEC team in six weeks to be ranked in top 25.

                              9) Jason Richardson was doing 90 mph in a 35 mph zone, and had a 3-year old in the back seat who wasn't properly secured. I'm almost convinced now that being really rich makes you crazy.

                              8) There is show on CNBC called American Greed, and they have lot of stories....well, its self-explanatory, how people have success, but run amok and don't know when to stop. Some pretty sad stuff, but it is very good television.

                              7) Cal-Northridge PG Josh Jenkins was injured in car accident where the driver was killed Saturday night, the latest in string of incidents for the first-place Matadors this season. Northridge had two players arrested earlier this season for grand theft from a Best Buy store.

                              6) NBA observers are thinking the future shrinking of the salary cap in the NBA will hinder the Knicks' chances of luring big-time players to the Big Apple after the 2010 season. We'll see. Hard to believe that either Lebron or Kobe won't be on the Knicks two years from now.

                              5) Facebook now declares that it has a perpetual license to use things you post to your own Facebook page — even if you terminate your account. Not sure why they would want to do that, but they can.

                              4) When lousy weather cancelled the final round at Pebble Beach, it made Dustin Johnson the winner, and guaranteed him a trip to play at the Masters. Johnson grew up 45 minutes from Augusta National.

                              3) A survey of 65 historians rated Abe Lincoln the best President in American history; they rated George W. Bush 36th. Have to feel bad for the sorry bastards who ranked behind Bush. James Buchanan, if you care, was listed as the worst President in history.

                              2) Is it a bad sign when your best player hires a crisis management team the day before he reports to spring training? Ladies and gents, welcome to the strange but true world of Alex Rodriguez.........

                              1) While the Bronx Bombers trudge through another chapter of the ARod soap opera Tuesday, the Rays and Red Sox will be practicing baseball in relative obscurity. That has to be more fun.

                              ----------------------------------------------------------------------
