  • David Ortiz wants season-long ban

    ESPN.com news services

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- David Ortiz says players who test positive for steroids should be suspended from baseball for the whole season.

The Boston Red Sox designated hitter says the way to clean up the game is through testing and not by taking players to court. Houston Astros shortstop Miguel Tejada pleaded guilty last Wednesday to misleading Congress about performance-enhancing drug use in baseball.

Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen suggested the same one-year ban on Sunday.

"I feel we have to do something very drastic about this situation," Guillen told the Chicago Tribune.

Ortiz also says he feels fine after wrist problems last season limited him to 23 homers. He says he took a few months off from swinging and felt a little strange when he started doing it again. But now he says he feels fine.

Ortiz was at Boston's spring training camp Monday, the reporting day for position players. The first full-squad workout is Wednesday.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

What a freaking hypocrite. This coming from one of the biggest roid users in the last 6 years. In his last 3 years in Minnesota he averaged 16 HRs and 63 RBIs averaging 376 ABs a season. He averaged 1 HR every 23.5 plate appearences and 1 RBI every 6 ABs. In the 6 years he has been with the Sox he has averaged 39 HRs a season and 121 RBIs in 525 ABs per year. He has averaged 1 HR every 13 ABs and 1 RBI every 4.3 ABs. Quite an improvement. Must be a coincidence.

He will look foolish if he gets caught doing them current or past.

Whether Ortiz took them or not, I agree with him;suspend anyone(including him) for the entire season if the tests prove positive.
If is is ok for asswipe David Stern to suspend players for many games and in some cases for the entire season for a little bit of fisticuffs in the stands, then surely someone who is caught doing something which diminishes the entire integrity of the game itself should be punished at least as much.
